Bruce Hornsby: “20/20 Vision / Night on the Town”

Music • Views: 21,066

YouTube

I hope nobody feels like they’re getting an overdose of Bruce Hornsby, but as long as he keeps posting these great solo jams on a daily basis, I feel like I must help people see them because they are all fantastic. And I think this may be the last of the current batch.

We’re in the home stretch of our spotlight on Bruce’s latest solo tour of Alabama, Mississippi and Florida, from November 2021. Performance six is a medley of an old Jimmy Martin song (in Bruce’s world, this is how it’s known) “20/20 Vision” into the title song from BH and the Range’s third album “A Night On The Town.” Bruce originally recorded “20/20” with the late, great jazz bass icon Charlie Haden for Charlie’s album “Rambling Boy” in 2008.

I was really happy when he sat in with the Grateful Dead…his grand piano was a great addition as Vince Welnick was settling in at keyboards after Brent’s death…feel bad for Vince…he never did feel like he fit in with the band…died like a lot of other GD keyboard players…drug overdose.

Hey, hey, hey! Pigpen didn’t die of a drug OD! He worked long and hard to turn his liver into a useless chunk of meat. That, my friend, was *commitment*.

At least they are showing actual American stores or something other than a toilet paper aisle from March 2020. Which is what they have been doing.

I was in a store today. And as it has been for over a year now, it was at about 95% full stock. There was plenty of both meat and bread.

I went to get some things we were running low on and found very few things out of stock. Yogurt was a bit low, some kinds out entirely. Chips were still in low supply, but they had more than last week. Chicken, beef and fish were all stocked up and there were a ton of hams for some reason. Prices are really jacked up on meat though. Carrots were almost gone, haven’t been restocked in awhile, same with some other produce. But there was plenty of bread, rice, cereals. Crackers and soups were low on stock. But so far it’s been pretty easy to find most things, especially if you hit more than one store.

I did our grocery shopping yesterday at Fred Meyers and most of the shelves were well stocked. Those items not available had signs posted stating the items were not available due to shipping delays. The intense storms we’ve been having along the northwest coast have delayed our barge shipments.

Also, I estimate masking at about 95%.

Leaving the RW bullshit aside, I have noticed that local markets (OK, it’s NYC, so not Everytown USA) have had (and still have) a lot of supply shortages here and there- almost never in staples (meat, veggies, dairy, etc.) but for a lot of local outlets - mainly CVS-type places rather than grocery - there are lot more spaces on the shelves than there were pre-pandemic. Though never the sort of Soviet Clearout dearths RWNJs love to imagine.

ADD: as noted in #57, it’s also the middle of winter, prone to storm delays, etc. so SOME shortages are only to be expected.

Putin has an economy about the size of Texas.

Granted, he has a shitpot of nukes, but that is all he’s got to threaten the US.

Meanwhile, he is threatening the US and the EU, which has a total GDP of around 31 trillion $’s a year, while Russia’s GDP is around 1.5.

Meanwhile, Sweden (not NATO) has advanced forces south into the Baltic Sea, ready to support the Baltic States if Russia gets frisky. Finland (not NATO) is also grumbling (no love lost there) about Putin being a regional asshole who thinks he is a global player.

And this is Putin’s problem. He’s a minnow who thinks he’s a shark.

He rules an economic extractive kleptocracy that distributes spoils to the 100 families that have ruled the USSR/Russia since Stalin’s death in 1953.

Welp, I am back from my civic duty joining the throngs at the grocery store to chant the snow mantra. And if there were thongs instead, I would have immediately bailed.

There were only two goobers _not_ wearing masks. Two middle aged males shopping together and with the expressions of little kids who were getting away with something naughty.

The milk was out, but both bread and tp were available.

The produce section was low but most things were available.

In the dairy section, the regular yogurt was out, but Greek yogurt was available. I assume that the regular yogurt shipment did not make it to the warehouse. The cream cheese section was fairly empty but there was some. I managed to snag a package of official Philadelphia cream cheese. So in celebration, I picked up some bagels and a package of lox for the weekend.

Parts of the beef section were low. But lots of chicken. Remembering A Mom Anon’s post, I looked as I walked past the chips section, it looked full.

In summary, it looked like the typical local grocery store facing a winter storm, winter weather, and a lot of temporary demand. First world problems.

In retrospect, I probably should have done what BWS did and shop Wednesday. I do wish that I had seen Barefoot Grin’s suggestion to pick up some lottery tickets before, not after, the grocery trip. Good to see PhillyPretzel also has things under control.

It did look like the roads had already been pretreated.

We are alumni of the Department of Justice who have served under both Democratic and Republican administrations in career and politically appointed roles, many of us as prosecutors. We always understood our responsibility was to ensure even-handed enforcement of the law and to uphold the fundamental democratic principle that, irrespective of position, no one is above it.
*snip*
The Attorney General has made it clear that the former president and his confidants will be treated the same as the hundreds of others who have been subject to investigation or to prosecution and punishment for their roles in the January 6 insurrection. That is the embodiment of the Department’s mission to ensure the non-political and even-handed administration of justice, and we commend the Attorney General for his commitment to upholding that mission. His speech appropriately recognizes that if those who hold the most power are allowed to act with impunity while the less powerful are sent to prison, equal justice under the law would be a lie, and respect for the rule of law and democracy itself would be in grave danger of destruction.
*snip*
For all these reasons, we call on the Attorney General to continue to translate his important words into concrete actions to impose accountability on the powerful people who sought to destroy our democracy in every case supported by the evidence. We stand ready to support him and the Department’s career staff as they carry forward this vital mission.

Regarding Anymouse leaving this community:

I’ve always believed that some hardcore, unyielding, Solid Core Believers have some built-in prejudices that they cannot shuck off.

It may be racists. It may be supply-side economists. It may be Atheists.

I think Anymouse was one of those people who didn’t realize that the extent to which he believed prevented him from being able to be a member of a civil discourse where he didn’t call a fellow member on this Board a Fucking Idiot for believing in a God who he believed didn’t exist.

I’m not a God guy, but I would never attack another member here, today, for believing in God.

I’ll just avoid the subject, thank you very much. Who wins arguing about it? How does it advance an argument on what is often a political Board?

How does it advance an argument about music?

Frank Zappa famously said “Talking about music is like dancing about architecture.”

It’s pointless.

I think if you replace “music” with “religion” you might find a reasonable rule for civility on this Board.

What scares me were the number of likes and retweets this person got. And this particular tweet (third in the thread), it was like what the heck? Yeah, I’m single and I have a cat at home, but I’m not broken. I have a support network.

Maybe I’m just suspicious but this also appeared to be an attack on those of us who aren’t in proper family units with proper support structures. Or something. But ultimately, it’s some guy who is working up his own version of Q drops.

This woman was part of the ‘Lawyers for Trump’ group, working on the election challenge in Michigan - which means she might be in some legal trouble herself, if she was working with the ‘electors’ who were just referred to the DOJ for criminal investigation.

The news source is legit, even if Karen Bunchanumbers isn’t.

And on a different subject: you know how there’s this thing called “imposter syndrome”? Doubting your abilities and feeling like a fraud? Well, I figured out tonight that there’s such a thing as “illness impostor syndrome”, where you know you feel bad, you know that you can’t legitimately work because if you do, it’s not going to work out well for you or your employer, BUT you question whether you’re really sick enough to be off work and you have the urge to GET ALL THE TESTING so that you can PROVE you’re legitimately sick.

Yeah, I think I’ve been struggling with that all day long today.

re: #94 Dave In Austin

Interesting scenario.

I really wonder if tfg and his flunkies passed/compromised US/NATO military plans onto Putin. That would be the only way such a scenario would be successfully doable by the Russians.

I suspect that the most likeliest scenario is still a massive kinetic attack on Ukraine. It certainly has the most reward and lowest risk. Remember that there is still a large group of Ukrainians who would welcome reunion with Russia.

Such an attack might include cyber-attacks on NATO assets. But, they would generate an attempt by NATO countries to damage Russia back via counterattacks. And, I suspect, even Russia severing communications links to the outside world would not be enough to stop effective counterattacks.

Yeah, it was not a good night for Faux personalities tonight. Tucker got shown up on religion, while Lumpy got taken to school about energy prices:

[Embedded content]

Yeah they forget they can’t pretend like 2020 didn’t happen when not talking to kool-aid drinkers.

“Gas is through the roof!”
Oil was -$30/bbl in May of 2020, and low the whole year because *no one* was going anywhere. You think Oil producers *aren’t* going to try to make up for that loss?

“Inflation is skyrocketing”
If you take out gas prices (explained above, and car prices which are not everyday purchases) then it’s only up a little bit over normal. All due to a massive cascading supply chain problem caused by a goddamned global pandemic you conveniently forget about when mentioning this. The fact that inflation is only slightly up here compared to most of the world is good thing. It’s like 9% in Russia and 36% in Turkey. Both “Trumpy” places.

re: #83 austin_blue

As I mentioned downstairs, WW1 was started by Austria-Hungary, a failed state, an empire whose days were past. That conflict engaged all of Europe and ultimately the US and left 20 million dead and 21 million injured. Russia is a failed state but its nuclear arsenal and its extensive skill at hacking make Putin a shark, not a minnow. And let’s not forget the hold he seems to have over many in the Republican Party, and not just Trump. They see him as an ally. Who knows what Putin might do if he thinks that the West will not respond militarily to his military aggression? If he believes that the GOP will kneecap any American response. He is playing a dangerous game, and the entire world may pay dearly for his misjudgment and our inability to prevent his attacks.

Russia’s not a shark, at best it’s a barracuda, a opportunistic predator that primarily goes after smaller fish and can only take down larger prey by tearing chunks out of them. Yeah, they have nukes, but so does North Korea and we still treat it like a political basketcase rather than as an apex predator. Nukes generally have been seen as a weapon of last resort for decades, not least because once things have elevated to the usage of nukes then there is no way to back down. If one side pops off even a low-yield tactical nuke to overcome a tactical disadvantage, then the opposing side is all but forced to respond to avoid losing their own advantage, with nuclear exchanges escalating from there until city-killers are being exchanged back and forth.

Once you take nukes off the table, Russia is at best a regional power and not one that can go toe-to-toe with a NATO coalition for any sustained length of time.

They were gonna have a whole new surface fleet with brand new carriers and cruisers, squadrons of fifth gen stealth fighters, next gen stealth bombers, and enough tanks to run a column from Moscow to the Rhine. This guy Neil Shenvi is an obnoxious twit with prestigious science degrees. He’s recently become influential in some completely off to the right Evangelical circles because of his attacks on Critical Race Theory/”wokeness”. Anyway, ole Neil here classified a bunch of people into different clusters and people are going to town on it.

I, on the other hand, had a stark realization when I read another iteration:

Anyway, the only people the average reader of LGF may have heard of out of this list is Kristen Du Mez (author of “Jesus and John Wayne,” a history of masculinity in the American Evangelical churches that has the right wing crowd up in arms) and Beth Allison Barr (medieval historian and author of “The Making of Biblical Womanhood”, which is an examination of how women have been pushed into and kept in a second class status in American Evangelicalism, also REALLY has the right wing crowd up in arms).

Anyway, after thinking about it, I’m of the opinion that I might talk to a couple of these tables as I was on the way out to the library with my permanent hall pass. Still an introverted loner after all these years.

Oh, and for what it’s worth, the disorientation is worse this morning. I hit the X on this post just as I was finishing it up this morning. *shakes head*

3 years ago yesterday:
Hawaii emergency worker ‘temporarily reassigned’ after missile alert blunder

The employee responsible for inspiring mass panic with Hawaii’s missile alert misfire has been “temporarily reassigned” pending an internal investigation into the blunder, officials said Sunday.

The longtime Hawaii Emergency Management Agency worker pressed the wrong button — twice — during a shift change Saturday, leading thousands of people in the Aloha State to believe a ballistic missile was headed for them.

The employee, who has not been identified, selected a missile launch warning from a drop-down menu instead of selecting an internal test alert that kicks off a new shift, agency spokesman Richard Rapoza said.

Not knowing he had selected the wrong option, he clicked “yes” when the computer prompt asked if he would like to continue. The worker realized the epic proportions of his error after receiving the same frightening missile alert on his own phone.

I work out every day, have no conditions that would exacerbate the illness, and can see why this virus is a huge problem.

My energy level was non-existent but I have a good amount of physical resources to draw on to power through this sort of illness through a short period. However I gave myself one ultimatum that would trigger a trip to the overloaded local ER. That was if I noticed any sense of symptoms affecting my lungs. Thankfully that didn’t occur, I didn’t unnecessarily take up precious resources from my hospital system, and here I am still mildly trending towards normality. Maybe in a week or so I will feel close to 100%. That can’t be said for the many who fell to this unnecessarily awful sickness that my evil governor and the corrupt Florida government try desperately to cover up. My neck of the woods was spared earlier on but now Covid is raging here too at last. Watch out if you think any part of Florida is safe if you are thinking of coming here anytime soon.

In a new development in the Matt Gaetz sex crimes probe, a sentencing date has been set for Gaetz’s ex-associate Joel Greenberg. Greenberg pled guilty last year to multiple charges, including sex trafficking a minor, and has been cooperating with the criminal probe into Gaetz.

“Knock knock It’s the British.”

Yes, I remember learning how drastically the classical Greeks were affected when the British arrived during the Persian wars. (Remind your son and his friend that history didn’t begin in 1700. Or even 1600.).

i’m guessing part of what i’m seeing is snow bunny related. I mean, I got the last supremus maximus pizza in the freakin’ walmart. of course, that could also be because they sell them 3 bucks cheaper than anyone else in town. I mean, fuck, if I’m gonna spend 9 bucks on a pizza, I’ll just spend 12 bucks on a pizza and have dominos fire one up for me. 6 bucks is what frozen pizza should be at.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said publicly and privately in the days following the deadly riots at the US Capitol that President Donald Trump admitted personally bearing some responsibility for the attack — one of several reasons why the select committee on January 6 wants to hear from the House’s top Republican.

McCarthy shared the details of his conversation with Trump in a little-noticed local radio interview done a week after the insurrection, in which McCarthy said he supported a committee to investigate the attack and supported censuring then-President Trump

“I say he has responsibility,” McCarthy said on KERN, a local radio station in Bakersfield, California, on January 12 of last year. “He told me personally that he does have some responsibility. I think a lot of people do.”

McCarthy shared a similar account last year with House Republicans during a private conference call a day earlier, according to multiple sources on the call. That call was reported on at the time, but CNN obtained a more detailed readout of the call on Thursday.

“Let me be clear to you and I have been very clear to the President. He bears responsibility for his words and actions. No if ands or buts,” McCarthy told House Republicans on January 11, 2021, according to the readout obtained by CNN from a source listening to the call. “I asked him personally today if he holds responsibility for what happened. If he feels bad about what happened. He told me he does have some responsibility for what happened. But he needs to acknowledge that.”

10 minutes later - about a 2-3 foot drop. The rip outside the harbor entrance is pretty impressive…a lot of water draining out…must be a 7-8 knot flow.

Beijing has reported its first local transmission of the Omicron variant:

The Chinese capital, Beijing, has reported its first locally transmitted case of Omicron coronavirus variant, state media reported on Saturday, less than three weeks before the Beijing Olympic Winter Games.

An official at the city’s disease control authority said at a press conference that laboratory testing found “mutations specific to the Omicron variant” in the person. The authorities have since published detailed account of the patient’s activity that dates back to 31 December.

Haidian district officials in Beijing said they had sealed up the infected person’s residential compound and workplace. They have also collected 2,430 samples for testing from people linked to the two locations.

Yep. Only three more weeks to the opening ceremony; I have little doubt China will go all-out to keep Omicron from becoming a wildfire. The last thing Beijing would want is to have the Winter Games become the ultimate superspreader event because of a COVID rampage - that’d be a major blow to their national prestige. And their New Year starts on February 1st….another superspreader event.

West coast authorities are declaring the beaches off-limits until the tsunami alert is over. First reports indicate an increase in wave heights of 1 to 2 feet.

MAGAts protesting the beach ban to be against their Constitutional rights of free assembly. Supreme Court to rule later today.

They should announce that those who have a religious objection to not drowning are free to assemble at the beach.

Sure, shooting a lion is one thing, but let’s see those wannabe “Great White Hunters” try to straight up steal meat from a pride of lions.

Volcanoes rock. Volcanoes caught on satellite blowing their stack rock.

According to the volcanologists, this was a mere level 2 eruption. It’s still more than sufficient to create tsunamis and threats to life and limb.

So, we’ve got a major fire in a pool supply factory to deal with in these parts. 11+ alarms called. At least three counties have departments responding to aid in knocking down this massive fire. It started last night around 9pm and quickly engulfed entire facility and threatened adjacent structures. Smoke could be seen for miles, and folks were warned to keep windows closed (easy since it’s near zero with wind chills).
