I keep telling my brother (who has been sinking a significant proportion of an accident settlement he got a couple of years back into gold coins with the expectation that the SHTF) that you can’t eat gold and he’d do better to stock up on provisions and then cook and use and rotate through said provisions. That’s the thing about prepping, you have to cook and rotate your supply because eventually that stuff goes bad.

What so many of these goobers fail to realize is that gold has no inherent value, that the same reason they sniff at paper/plastic notes as “fiat currency” is why gold coins are useless if we find ourselves reverting to a barter economy. Without a government to set and enforce their value, gold coins are only worth what the other guy is willing to exchange them for. So if he thinks that a bottle of clean water is worth a sack of gold coins, then that’s their value and arguing what the price of gold was when society collapsed isn’t going to change that.

Even bottle caps in the FO universe are backed by something, usually representing a set amount of pure water from aquifers or other sources of untainted H2O. The one exception was FO2, when the NCR had adopted a gold standard and their gold coins were the universally accepted currency. Then FO:NV came along and upended that by saying that the BOS had blown up the NCR’s gold reserves during their short war, leading the latter to adopt fiat currency (which was practically worthless) and traders to revert to bottle caps. By contrast, the “backwards” Caesar’s Legion had so much gold and silver from its conquests that it could afford to mint coins that were of greater value in trades than NCR dollars.

I still remember when I was about 4-5 years old going to a YMCA that had found a way to access a PBS station and sitting on a cold floor watching one of the first episodes on a B/W TV in Quincy, Il. But that was about it until I thought I was too old for it at about age 8. I had older brothers.

Like conspiracies, there’s a kernel of reality: value is now not just abstract but basically occult, with new formulations of “how is a thing worth what it is worth” being constructed regularly in ways that reinforce the wealth of the already very wealthy, while the basic sources of wealth are less and less accessible to most people. Wishing for a store of value that you can literally horde, that is not mutable within the market structure, is pretty understandable…

…until you get to the part where the advocates talk about the power/control their stash will grant them in the future. The real fantasy is a return to an older system of hierarchy-through-wealth, where the gold-holder has, through cunning and savvy, prepared for the moment when there’s a very specific level of societal collapse that destroys other methods of storing value, but does not reduce gold merely to token-value because subsistence is all that matters.

The Hunga Tonga-Hunga Haʻapai volcano started acting up several days ago. The two little islands (which themselves were formed but a few years back) were merged by an eruption last week. It’s an ongoing growth of a new island along the subduction zone in which the Pacific plate is rapidly diving down into the upper mantle.

In about 75 million years there will be a large continent formed from the merger of a bunch of islands, Australia, stuff on the Philippines plate, etc.

Gold has been used as a medium of exchange for over 2500 years. It is a durable material that won’t vanish from existence when the wrong server goes down; indeed it will still be around if all computers shut down worldwide. Of course without computers, our modern civilization would completely collapse in a short time. Reverting to a 1940’s level of technology would take too long to handle the devastation that would arise in the interim.

I mean, that’s always been the point. It won’t matter that the schools rightfully contest the idea that what they’re teaching is “CRT”. The laws will be open ended about what counts as “CRT” under the ban and attack accordingly, like similar bans in other states. And the chilling effect with make it so that schools will second guess curriculum even if it might skirt under the ban.

HUNT VALLEY, Md. (TND) — A Florida bill would allow video cameras to be installed in classrooms, and would require teachers in those classrooms to wear microphones.

The bill, proposed by a Republican state representative, prohibits use of the videos for teacher evaluations, “or any purpose other than for ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of students in the classroom.” It also bans “regular, continuous, or continual monitoring” of videos.

A number of parents across the country are pushing for video recordings in classrooms, due to concerns about critical race theory and what children are being taught in school, according to the Washington Examiner. Critics of such proposals say teachers should not be subjected to video surveillance, and that it’s an invasion of privacy.

Besides, the paranoid racist fascists will just send their kids to school with their phones to record the teachers they don’t like. Meanwhile teachers have to come up with money for classroom supplies, work constantly on lesson plans that will work in a pandemic, deal with out of date text books and curriculums, and deal with a lot of asshole parents. But no, let’s make their lives more difficult.

Huh? What? I had literally never heard of this movie, though I did see the prequel, The Jolson Story.

This does have a couple of interesting pluses, a young Barbara Hale playing Jolson’s nurse when he collapses on a USO tour, and an epistemalogical conceit in which actor Larry Parks plays both Jolson and himself in the same scene:

In this sequel, the story reaches the point in Jolson’s life where the film of his life is to be made (first film: The Jolson Story), and in preparation for the film Jolson meets the actor who is to portray him. In what is probably a cinema first, Parks plays both Jolson and himself (the young Larry Parks) as they meet in a split-screen scene.

The object is to make public education impossible to conduct.

The desire to destroy public education in favor of private schools and home schooling has been a far right dream for many decades. This is the purpose of this and other legislation creating thought crimes deemed by white supremacism.

BTW, the target schools in this effort are not black or Latino schools (which will be largely ignored) but to target mainly the white schools so that the culture of white power remains unquestioned for decades longer.

This is subsidiary to the obvious objective of the moral panic—revisionism to facilitate white nationalism—but also at play is an understanding of children as assets of white nationalism—property of the parents, but only to the extent the parents are supposed to create units for the volkisch state.

Teachers are inherently suspect because t’s not enough to mandate what they teach, but to monitor in case the process of communicating information challenges the mandated incuriousity of their worldview. It’s not just facts that need to be kept from kids, but meta-cognition and critical thinking. Hence the panopticism: the slate of taboo topics are the surface layer, but the real fear is of the very idea of learning: you can’t just create a slate of approved topics, you have to in real time make sure that children aren’t being given to tools to think for themselves.

The parents who are calling for classroom surveillance couldn’t afford private schools (and need schools to babysit their kids while they’re working). I see no reason not to take them at face value — they want to spy on teachers to see that they’re not teaching them anything that might upset their parents’ world view.

Umberto Eco, Ur-Fascism:

“…The Ur-Fascist hero is impatient to die. In his impatience, he more frequently sends other people to death.
Since both permanent war and heroism are difficult games to play, the Ur-Fascist transfers his will to power to sexual matters. This is the origin of machismo (which implies both disdain for women and intolerance and condemnation of nonstandard sexual habits, from chastity to homosexuality). Since even sex is a difficult game to play, the Ur-Fascist hero tends to play with weapons - doing so becomes an ersatz phallic exercise.”

If you listen to some anti-Trump Republicans (which you probably shouldn’t normally, considering how wrong they were about their party), the Dem messaging should be this: the GOP wants to put cameras in classrooms so perverts can stare at your kids all day. Also, they want to be able to examine your kid’s genitals in school and pretend it’s to check that they’re not trans.

Interestingly, Djokovic and the Serbian government haven’t been; their reactions have been pretty low-key. I expect vaccination requirements to keep being ratcheted up worldwide, so Djokovic is probably going to have to bite the bullet and get the damn shots or play second and third tier Serbian tournaments for the rest of his career.

I just wonder how long vaccine requirements will stick around; I’d be surprised if they’re still in effect by 2025.

The Czech government was thinking of phasing in compulsory vaccination, but now they’re backing off and even vaccine passports (which are widely ignored here in any event) will likely be quietly scrapped by this summer. The new Health Minister views them as useless and he’s said to want to get ahead of an upcoming Constitutional Court ruling that - from the questioning of the justices - would abolish vaccine passports anyway.

I can believe it. I went to my local CVS for my BP meds yesterday. It’s located inside a Target store. Very few people wearing a mask and social distancing was also just about non-existent as well. At least there wasn’t a line at the pharmacy and I was able to get in and out fast. Also no home test kits. The gal at the counter says they sell out as fast as the come in.

The Sound of Music made 163 million dollars in 1965. That was a freakin’ fortune for the time. Made 50 million more dollars than Dr. Zhivago, which is just a better movie, though yes, of course I can still sing “Up on the hill sat a lonely goat, yootalayhee yootalayhee yootalay HE WHO” complete with the falsetto, so maybe there’s a reason it grossed so much money.

Something that isn’t brought up is that “natural” immunity wears off for a lot of coronaviruses. Herd immunity to those coronaviruses isn’t EVER possible.

If immunity wears off for coronaviruses, then having continuing boosters is an inevitable consequence of that natural fact.

Today is the 80th anniversary of a historical moment.

The 26th Cavalry Regiment, consisting mostly of Philippine Scouts, was the last U.S. cavalry regiment to engage in horse-mounted warfare. When Troop G encountered Japanese forces at the village of Morong on 16 January 1942, Lieutenant Edwin P. Ramsey ordered the last cavalry charge in American history. They had long since turned in their sabers and so charged the Japanese forces with 1911 pistols in hand.

A short time later, supply issues forced their command to order the horses killed and used as food for the troops. It is said the 26th refused to eat their mounts.

US soldiers would not enter combat on horseback again 22 October 2001, when members of a 12-man a Green Berets A Team, accompanying members of the Afghanistan Northern Alliance, rode into battle at Cōbaki in Balkh Province, Afgahanistan.

I remember that one!! Wasted untold hours!

The first one I played had a bug that made it unwinnable, so never mind how long I spent. After I figured out that it was a bug, not a feature, I found another version and finished the game, but I think I had a cheat sheet in case I got stuck on the final bits — I felt I’d spent enough of my life on it. It’s still a great game.

Up early catching up on the thread.

Cleopatra was the highest grossing movie the year I was born. Given that I’m the female protagonist of my life, 2022’s not looking good for me.

Spartacus was the top-grossing American film of the year of my birth. I guess that means the year is not going to end up so well for me.

OMFG!!!
I went on to Google News to see if they had any updates on the (now, gratefully, concluded) Colleyville synagogue attack, and got the following headline in the recap:

CNN:

Hostages safely rescued after nearly 11-hour ordeal at a Texas synagogue, officials say. The suspect is dead

BBC:

Texas synagogue hostage-taker was British - reports

Ft Worth Star-Telegram:

Texas officials say all hostages safe, out of Colleyville synagogue; hostage-taker dead

Fox News:

‘Corrupt’ FBI should be ‘eliminated’ for statement on Texas synagogue hostage taker: Critics

And their lead grafs - before they actually get into any reporting actually involving the Colleyville situation:

The FBI is facing backlash on social media after an official said that the Texas synagogue hostage taker’s demands were “not specifically related to the Jewish community.”

“The FBI is now an organization solely focused on destroying the domestic enemies of the Democratic Party,” conservative talk radio show Jesse Kelly tweeted Sunday morning. “Any Republican Congress or Presidential candidate who doesn’t loudly proclaim his intention to massively reform or disband this organization should not be considered.”

Journamalism…. ain’t it grand?

ETA: I perused Google News’ “Full Coverage” links, and from the headlines, I get the distinct feeling that the right-wing media is really disappointed in the outcome of the Colleyville hostage situation: they seem annoyed that there wasn’t more bloodshed to exploit: and a lot of carping that the reality of the incident didn’t unfold according to their stereotypical scenarios.

So I did the second test last night and again it was negative. I suppose I should be happy that if it was the Rona, the vaccines and booster did what they were supposed to do and smacked down the viral load quickly. But I’m not sure I’m out of the woods quite yet…my temp was down almost to (my) normal when I woke up this morning. However, in the last 2 hours it has gone up 2.5 degrees (baseline* 96.4 to 98.9) and all I’ve done is make coffee and sit in a chair. Analgesics have now been been applied. Again. Glargh.

* This is my baseline, it’s always been this low, whether at home, or at the doctor. They don’t even bat an eye at the doctor.

Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Jan 16, 2022 • 9:42:21am

Vaccinations in San Diego county are sort of stalling out. Only 906k boosters have been administered, even though 2,487,773 are fully vaxxed.

The fully vaxxed (5+) are 79% of the population, though single dose is at 89.4%. That’s a 10 point separation and has remained that way for some time.

I get the feeling that 10% are people who got one dose, had a reaction, and now don’t want to get a second shot.

Anyway, COVID case rates have skyrocketed, as expected, since 1 Jan.

Fortunately our hospitals are not yet full, though there has been a surge in the ICU.

That hostage situation in Texas: fortunately it was resolved without victims (other than the perp.)

But what struck me were the images of the police: they look like they are part of the Army.

This is part of a long and worrying trend in the US.

re: #309 Eclectic Cyborg

Most of the ICU COVID patients are unvaccinated, but some were vaccinated. I’d have to do the Bayesian thing to work out the probabilities, but since the vaxxed in the ICU are probably the very old or immuno-compromised I don’t think even that will be sufficient to work out the probability of ending up in the ICU if one is unvaccinated.

Prince Harry is taking a legal action against the UK government to be allowed to pay for government protection when he and his family are in the UK. The UK government refuses to allow him to pay for government protection. At this point Harry says the UK is unsafe without the extra level of intelligence he can get from having government protection beyond private security.

theguardian.com

One might think that Harry is being a snotty and weird prince but, frankly, after getting a *just this side of racist* ad on Twitter about Meghan Markle from the UK Spectator magazine two weeks ago, I think there’s something to it. (My response to the ad was: “And why am I seeing this crap? I’m all Team Meghan, not Team A Bunch of Stuck Up British Racists.”)

It doesn’t have any special way of indicating double letters - you just have to try them to find out.

Not to mention that, on the “education” issue, McAuliffe torpedoed his own campaign with an astonishing gaffe about how parents shouldn’t have input into their kids’ curricula. Misconstrued, to be sure (since we know that it is usually the most ideologically-extreme parents that have outsize influence on local schools), but obvious enough to, apparently, tip the scales just enough to lose.
