Media: Biden fails to cross aisle to convince GOPers
GOP: media completely ignores that we’re actively obstructing and have made no secret of this. We’ll keep doing what we’ve been doing because no consequences flow from our sabotage of the pandemic response, the economy, or democracy.
Biden: we’ve gotten covid relief and infrastructure done in a 50/50 Senate and thin majority in House
Media: why is Biden tooting own horn
GOP: this plan is working better than we can imagine
“Progressives”: why isn’t Biden doing more and getting voting rights done?
Media: we’ve interviewed this PA rural diner customer, and they want to know why we need to focus on voting rights when gas prices are so high
Biden: gas prices are coming down, and voting rights are essential to all rights.
SCOTUS: we’ll take care of limiting ability to fight pandemic that’s killed 850,000+ Americans and killing ~2,000 a day despite widespread access to vaccinations and masks
Media: why isn’t Biden ending the the pandemic
GOP: told you.. .the media doesn’t care what we do to sabotage Biden’s efforts. We can thwart pandemic response. We can obstruct on voting rights. We don’t get any of the blame by the media, and Biden bears all the blame. We can’t lose.

DOJ: indictments for right wing domestic terrorists - Oath Keepers
GOP: oh… shit.
“Progressives”: why hasn’t DOJ acted against Trump and his inner circle. This is a way to end all investigations into who actually incited.
Media: Progressives and others are seeing DOJ and AG Garland lack of effort to go after Trump and his inner circle.
GOP: woo. threat avoided. We’ve got Democrats fighting each other and the DOJ is still getting undercut by our Senate GOPers delaying confirmations for months. Mention inflation…

on and on it goes…

The media has all the information but chooses to selectively pick and choose what their priorities are - and it’s not democracy. It’s a horse race and undermining Biden while magic balance fairy-ing the fuck out of events. Even 1/6 is a horse race and the effort to investigate is a dig at Biden and AG Garland.

That’s despite fact nearly everything is demonstrably better than a year ago.

My wife and I were just discussing whether we should tell our housekeeper to not come in because covid is ripping through our area and she has sons in school. She just texted that her sons have it and she does, too. I asked if she was boosted and she said no. Not sure how sick they are, she tested +.
She won’t be coming back till she tests negative for a while. We’ll muddle through without her for a spell. Mondays are her regular days here, we don’t have any symptoms.

The last time that I drove in these kind of conditions was 10 years ago on a trip to NY for my youngest daughter’s engagement. On the way back we got caught in a snow squall on the 80 near Lock Haven. I pulled off the road and we checked into a motel for the night.

The next morning we found out that about 20 minutes after I stopped, there were pileups in both directions on the 80 just east of Lock Haven, the highway was shut down for 8 hours and we just missed being part of that.

“…With the notable exception of that AP story mentioned above, mainstream news coverage of the various Republican election moves — to restrict voting, put loyalists in charge of vote-counting, and make it easier for partisans to overturn legitimate voting results — has fallen dramatically short of stating the obvious conclusion: that the party is preparing to steal future elections.”

35
jaunte  Jan 16, 2022 • 2:59:17pm

Some Specific Accountability Fails

There are, unfortunately, countless ways that mainstream news reporters fail to hold the Republican Party accountable. Among them:

- They write with justified horror about the anti-vaccine movement - but fail to call out how Republican officials and Fox News are intentionally and unforgivably using the issue to incite their base.
- They describe the GOP’s appeals to racism and its manufacturing of white panic as clever politics.
- They let Republican leaders take credit for solving crises they themselves created.
- They don’t press Republicans to describe what they would actually do if they were in charge.
- They decry polarization without stating who’s at fault.
- They fail to confront, condemn and punish Fox’s propaganda and disinformation channel for spreading lies and inciting conspiracy theorists.
- They normalize and almost totally overlook the constant Republican obstruction of any progress toward better health care, preventing climate change, reducing inequality, and so on — only rarely noting the enormous human costs. Instead, they focus obsessively on Democratic squabbling.

No, it was in January 2012. The snow was also horrible the next day. I was going like 15 mph with my hazard lights on the whole time, and fuck all those 18 wheelers on my ass!

The snow did not stop until we got to the Ohio line.

After that I was all like I WILL NEVER DRIVE ON THE 80 IN WINTER EVER AGAIN!!!!

Um well we did drive to NY for Hanukkah last December but technically that was not really winter, it was the week after Thanksgiving. But it did remind me that another reason to not go on a road trip in winter is the short daylight.

All the ships use what is known as ‘The Epstein Drive’; a high efficiency, high thrust fusion drive. The Roci can do over 12Gs.

I believe all ships are designed so the floor points towards the drive. As long as the drive runs they have ‘gravity’.

They also use teleportation to provide the ships with reaction mass in operation, pumping hydrogen from Jupiter’s stratosphere directly into their main propulsion thrusters.

Well, that’s as good a theory as any. The Freefall comic strip alternative involves very carefully calculated trajectories to enable rendezvous with fuel bladders launched by orbital linear accelerators, but you can’t have zoom-boom dogfights in space in that sort of universe.

re: #34 jaunte

This has been addressed constantly here. Major media is a business first and a reliable purveyor of truth much farther down in importance. They are also positioning themselves to still be in business after the upcoming 2024 Republican coup is complete and they solidify their autocracy by lowering the hammer on all media and corporate foes.

Senior execs of media companies will be threatened with arrest and Subpoena before all levels of state and Federal government in a bid to harass leadership into submission. The model for this is Hitler and his corporate control over Germany’s industrial titans.

Corporations in the end don’t care about freedom, democracy, life, liberty, happiness or any other silly notions about being a human being. Corporations exist in order for the top leadership to extract as much money as possible from the company’s existence and to plan the future of a company in order for it to survive. Under a 2024 Republican win survival means American companies will either fall in line with hard right wing edicts and laws or be shut down, lose government contracts and protections or have leadership arrested. Many deny this is coming. It is coming.

The day before the Australian Open was set to begin, Novak Djokovic, possibly the greatest tennis player of all time, ran up against a group of determined opponents that no amount of talent, training, money or willpower could overcome,” the New York Times reports.

“He lost his final bid to stay in Australia on Sunday when a three-judge panel upheld the government’s decision to cancel his visa.”

More broadly, he lost to a government determined to make him a symbol of unvaccinated celebrity entitlement; to an immigration law that gives godlike authority to border enforcement; and to a public outcry over what was widely seen as Djokovic’s reckless disregard for others, particularly after he said that he had tested positive for Covid last month and met with two journalists anyway.”

FTL in SF stories is usually a method of getting the main characters to where they need to be to progress the plot. There are a few stories I know of where time dilation caused by close-to-light or actual lightspeed spaceflight play a part — Ken MacLeod’s Cosmonaut Keep trilogy has lightspeed space travel where the trading ships spend zero time in flight between planetary orbits as far as the passengers are concerned but for the planetary dwellers the ships only turn up every few years or decades, depending on their trading routes. There’s also Heinlein’s Time For The Stars.

Here’s a letter the opinion editor of the Salt Lake Tribune wrote about why it spends so much time covering the dominant religious institution of the region, which REALLY bothers the person who wrote into the editor. I’m putting it behind the button, but here’s the key takeaway, which I agree with:

It is my belief, unsupported by any objective research, that the outpouring of support for The Tribune’s nonprofit model has come in large part because the vision of Salt Lake City being left only with the church-owned Deseret News — which also publishes a great deal of information about the church but seldom if ever holds it to account for wrongdoing or questionable behavior — is more frightening to many than the image of the city having no newspaper at all.

I like to use Agassi and Sampras as examples for my kids. Andre had way more natural talent than Pete, but he didn’t have the desire to put in the effort that Pete did, and that’s why Pete has the titles.

I was going to say that those two seemed more even head to head, but then I actually looked up the Williams’ head-to-head record and it was much more even than I remember it being. Serena just seemed to be much more of a tour de force come Grand Slam time. I even forgot that Serena was the first between them to win a Grand Slam, so hrm.

The children may be ok; but too many parents, not so much. Every Republican state is out there trying to make sure students do not learn the truth about our history. During their formative years they will be taught lies about who we are. Here we mistakenly thought we were on the road to a more just society; we are now off the tracks (mixed metaphor) and the entire GOP is coordinating its attack at all levels of the government to prevent us from ever getting back. Except for Murkowski, not a single Republican was willing express an interest in protecting the right to vote.

Serena Williams won 23 Grand Slams.

Bjorn won 11.

Serena is the greatest tennis star since the 70s. She has a good base line game. Would have been fun watching her in long powerful rallies with Borg in his prime.

I went surfing today. It was a little chilly - water 54-55. How my dogs swim in that shit without a wetsuit is beyond me. My fingers got a little cold. Wife and I rode our bikes (it’s literally 3/4 mile) down to meet a friend who has her new husband’s son staying with them for the first time since they married last year. Kid’s 11. He took to boogie-boarding beautifully. Wish I had brought my phone to take pics.

My bike set up…with the 7’4” board made by the dude with the same name as me. May go out again tomorrow…will probably bring the 9’6” Cowboy.

That recipe is way too heavy on every kind of dairy there is. I think the recipe that I used also required a can of sweetened condensed milk. Anyway I never made it again. There are other pound cake recipes that are much easier and don’t require a bunch of very rich and heavy ingredients. I mean, you say that, but you just had a wild card upset (at least according to seeding) in Dallas tonight, and Tampa Bay won from the wild card last year. Say what you will about the actual reasons why they keep expanding the playoffs, the top teams winning out through the playoffs is rarer than you might imagine.

I took my daily perambulatory circumnavigation of the block around 6pm. ;)

There was about 3 inches of snow on the ground and the precipitation was changing to frozen rain. It is now steadily raining and the snow is melting away. And the wind is picking up.

But not to fear, there is a snowplow on the street in front of my house valiantly pushing the slush around.

I guess that we can now panic about next weekend’s forecast.

It’s raining in Brooklyn. In 20 minutes I will play a new Wordle. My life is awesome.
