This is an especially excellent SMN episode; really goes into historical depth to examine the ways the right attempts to co-opt MLK’s legacy and beliefs to promote the exact opposite of his legacy and beliefs. Worth watching all the way through.

Hi. In today’s episode, we discuss the literal only MLK quote that Republicans ever mention, how it’s a single sentence, why they love it so much, and what else he said that they’re avoiding.

Here’s some more information about the painting, and its artist, Detroit painter Jonathan Harris.

Fame came abruptly for Detroit painter Jonathan Harris, whose viral “Critical Race Theory” painting went around the world in a matter of days in late 2021.

Social justice Facebook page The Other 98% shared the painting with its 6.5 million followers on Nov. 21 and, almost instantly, it was popping up on various social media platforms. The original Other 98% post racked up about 24,000 reactions, 2,000 comments and 11,000 shares.

The self-taught artist had only been painting for about a year.

In December, the Free Press told Harris’ story, and his phone hasn’t stopped ringing since.

Former President Donald Trump and his family company have a long history of stiffing contractors, but there’s one bill they almost certainly wish they had paid.

Ahead of the 2017 presidential inauguration, the Trump Organization reserved a block of rooms at the Loews Madison Hotel. When at least 13 people didn’t show up, the Trump Organization refused to pay the bill, something it has done many times in the past. The company then dodged a credit collection agency and eventually squirmed out of it by pushing the $49,358 bill off to the nonprofit presidential inaugural committee, the PIC.

That dodged payment is now the crux of the attorney general for the District of Columbia’s latest effort to put the Trump Organization back in its crosshairs in an ongoing investigation into how the Trump kids used the Presidential Inauguration Committee to throw lavish parties of their own.

“It was their friends. It should never have been sent to the PIC. That’s misuse of funding. The Trump Organization being involved in any way and getting the PIC to pay any sort of balance anywhere on their behalf? It just doesn’t seem legitimate,” said Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, who coordinated inaugural events and is now the government’s lead witness in this case.

So, it’s not always sunny? 40F here and sun is now out after snow turned to rain. Thank goodness.

There are some asshats selling Trump crap on the southwest corner of Lindsay Rd and University here in Mesa. I flipped them the bird as I passed, but then I went to the pharmacy to pick up some scrips they’ve been bugging me about. And I saw this in the parking lot as I left. OF COURSE I took a picture.

Oh, and I’m obviously not entirely well as I forgot my first name when I went to pick up the prescriptions.

The original Tweet is unclear, what Tim LaHaye was complaining about was a memorial service at Wheaton College. King had been assassinated seven weeks previously. I posted a tweet with more information.

Tim LaHaye was still an awful racist and this just shows how white American Evangelicalism has been a hotbed of covert and overt racism for a very long time.

Er, the date on the letter is May 23, 1968. MLK Jr. had been dead for over a month by then (assassinated April 4, 1968). Note that MLK is not mentioned by name. I think the invitation and the complaint refer to someone else, perhaps one of MLK’s surviving associates or some more militant activist like Stokely Carmichael (very active at the time).

(Ok, everyone, I see mmmirely’s post). That makes more sense. Only the tweet poster referred to an invitation to speak.)

Mostly agree with you on the first, 100% on the second, but disagree on the third - had great food and drinks in restaurants that had sizable menus and varieties.
And that includes a restaurant in Budapest that had a menu with LITERALLY over a hundred items - and everything we ordered there was amazing.

general rules of course
my thinking behind the third one is you kind of have to gauge it - or know where you’re going
a large and varied menu (and prep times) compared to a not so large kitchen (physically and staffed) asks the question how can they seriously do all that properly?

beef wellington, and pad thai, and lobster rolls, and scampi and ribs

some of it has to be frozen or pre-prepared somehow

Funny thing is that this literally came up in a conversation I had just two days ago.
Israelis would be the only ones who wouldn’t give up here, because they pronounce it just like it’s spelled in English, albeit with a small twist at the end.
The reason for this is that the Israeli Academy of the Hebrew Language (world’s dullest institute ever IMO, which is officially tasked with coining new “proper” Hebrew equivalents of foreign words) has never actually coined a proper Hebrew wording for the foreign “Yacht”. As a result, it’s been transliterated in Hebrew for decades based on how it is spelled in English. But unlike in English, there are no silent parts to the word (that would require specific Israeli punctuation defined by the academy - which never happened). As such, the Hebrew spelling serves to point out exactly how Israelis are expected to pronounce it. So Israelis say it in Hebrew far closer to how it’s spelled in English than anyone in the English-speaking world. The “CH” is gutteral, and the one difference is the addition of an ‘a’ at the end (because the word and its associated object are classified as feminine).

Thank you for attending my TED Talk on “Linguistic Ridiculousness - It’s a Small Loony World After All”. ;)

Wolf Street: Empty Shelf at a Grocery Store Near You? Tight Inventories, Labor Shortages, Supply Chain Snags, Strong Sales, Soaring Costs
Grocery-store shoppers are sporadically encountering portions of a shelf that is suddenly empty when a week earlier there was plenty of product. There are again social-media “reports” of purchase limits of some items, such as toilet paper (why is it always toilet paper?) at some Costco, or pasta at some Walmart, or beef at some Safeway, or whatever. You can buy all kinds of stuff, but you might not be able to get one or two items that are part of your normal list.

At fault is a combination of problems. Staffing shortages due to the difficulty of hiring people are now being aggravated by omicron, where employees that tested positive have to self-isolate and can’t come to work for a few days. This impacts supermarkets and their suppliers in a big way. Transportation companies, faced with soaring demand, already struggled with driver shortages that was further aggravated by omicron, and further aggravated by the recent snow storms first in the West and then in the East, entailing traffic chaos and closed highways.

For businesses that have been operating on their finely tuned lean-inventory strategies, it has been challenging for the past 22 months to keep the shelves stocked.

And the costs of everything have soared - which generates a phenomenon where inventories, measured in dollars, have risen to new records because the costs of the goods in inventory have soared. But sales are high too as the shift to working from home changed consumption patterns, with grocery stores getting a bigger piece of the pie. And supply, as measured in how many days of sales are in inventory, has plunged. So here we go.

You wanna see bare shelves? Go to a store along the coast when a hurricane is predicted to make landfall.

Here is one that is even better. Go to a store that has not opened for business. Talk about empty. No stock, no staff and no customers.

work? We never saw him
before. There was no door.

Every few days I see something that reminds that there was soooo much corruption under Trump that there are a thousand things we forget. This is one:

In my son’s business - disc golf retail - his sales have gone up 53% in 2019 and 65% in 2020. Manufacturers can’t keep up with demand and aren’t allowing new wholesalers to come in to their production stream before 2024.

We expect 2022 to be even more exciting. What that’s gonna do to retail we have no idea.

For all those “The shelves are bare welcome to Biden’s Amerika!” assholes. Especially the “there’s no chicken anywhere!!” people.

This is the grocery store I go to most of the time in San Diego County. This is the chicken section. Saturday afternoon. It looked the same last night when I had to run in for something.

So maybe it has to do with big winter storms going on. In areas with a high omicron case rate. Or… some… shit…

Found a photo of the restaurant menu I mentioned (For Sale in Budapest, very popular one). Think this was before the menu’s half-way point. As a counter-argument to the third point, everything we ordered was ridiculously good, and in gigantic portions to boot.

Really can’t bring up Budapest in particular and Hungary in general without mentioning how food, alcohol and all things sweet are ridiculously low-priced there. Also the September festivals I attended in previous years (Wine Festival at the Castle, Beer and Music Festival in the Park, crazy sugar-rush-on-steroids Sweets Festival in the Market) are a must.
Just not when there’s a friggin’ pandemic going on of course.

We got out of that horrible war in Vietnam. Then years later the wall fell and the cold war seemingly dissipated and it felt great. Remember the “peace dividend”? Look where we are now divided as almost ever and the Russians may be coming for Ukraine. Maybe.
Russian Landing Ships Leave Baltic Sea Raising Concerns That Ukraine May Be Their Final Destination

The trio of vessels that left the Baltic today and are headed for an unknown destination comprise Project 775 Ropucha class amphibious warfare ships. All three, the Korolev, Minsk, and Kaliningrad, are seen in the Tweets embedded above. They departed the port of Baltyysk in the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad on January 15 and earlier today passed through the Great Belt, the largest of the straits that connect the Baltic to the Kattegat strait and which then leads to the Atlantic Ocean. While naval transits, including those involving landing ships, to and from Kaliningrad are by no means uncommon, Swedish officials have made clear that the current level of activity is unusually high.

And what “business efficiency” means coming from Republican politicians usually translates to:
1. “Fire more people”, and/or
2. “enforce [corporate] loyalty “ - see no. 1

I actually think #1 is “get as many tax dollars as possible into your crony friends pockets” That’s always #1 with Republicans.
