Anders Breivik is a failure. He gave the salute, more or less, but a traditional Nazi would at least have a decent looking suit. Couldn’t some Trumpite sympathizer have donated one? (Not that they are likely to know a decent suit when they see one.)

from previous thread: no I didn’t test positive after 2 rapid tests on Friday and Saturday nights. One of my friends thinks it’s because I didn’t test inside a narrow window where I would have had enough virus, but just after the window. Again, my major symptoms are fever, unable to keep stuff down (gastro), and disorientation.

I’ve been trying to imagine what the U.S. will be like if Trump regains power in 2025 without being apocalyptic. And really, it won’t be much different, because we are already living in Hell. Trump will focus primarily on stealing as much as he can for himself and his cronies, and making sure things can’t get better.

I read that for Omicron, you should swab in the throat as well as the nasal passages when testing. Don’t know if that’s true or not.

About Wilson’s tweet from the last thread:

The problem the Democrats have is that the Supreme Court has severely hindered their ability to drag people before the committee. It could potentially be fixed by Congress, but there are at least 52 senators that will prevent that from happening.

Showing the testimonies next month will be a good start to try to turn things in their direction.

Won’t make much difference, because the GOP already controls 6 seats, except that if Biden can replace Breyer, and a Democrat is elected President in 2024, we might get to shift the Court a bit more to the center if one of the older GOP Justices has to leave the Court.

Fox News’ Laura Ingraham appeared jubilant when reporting on Gen. Mark Milley’s COVID diagnosis.
Milley has long been a hate figure for Trump supporters.
Ingraham discussed Milley’s case on a section of her show where she pushes vaccine misinformation.
Fox News host Laura Ingraham clapped in celebration when reporting that Gen. Mark Milley, the highest-ranking US military officer, tested postive for COVID.

In “Positively Boosted”, a regular segment on her show when she showcases vaccinated public figures who catch COVID-19, Ingraham on Monday night discussed the news of Milley’s diagnosis.

I think all of those have been linked to COVID (honestly, these days, almost everything has, especially with Omicron, which has very different and weird symptoms. About the only thing it doesn’t have is losing one’s sense of taste and smell).

Are you improving? From what I have read over at sorryantivaxxer, where many people have discussed their positive results, is that even with vaxxed and boosted folks, the symptoms range for asymptomatic to being very sick for 4-5 days. No one there has had to go to the hospital as of yet, at least that I read.

You’re in my thoughts!

What I am facing….

I can’t stand her or her husband. That said,

Several fact checks have said there is no evidence she was involved in organizing anything. Aside from a couple encouraging posts she made in the morning when the rally was still just a rally and not a violent attack on the capitol. Not sure what this current letter says, but I would love to read it.

The fact she hasn’t been called to testify by the committee leads me to believe there is no there there.

Yeah, but they’re also hedging a bit in case things get worse. So far, though cases are increasing, hospitalizations - and people in serious condition - are declining significantly.

There’s also the old saying, “Kdo nedělá vůbec nic, nic nepokazí”, which translates to “He who does nothing at all does nothing wrong”. IOW, if you don’t go out on a limb, it won’t get sawn off from underneath you. It explains a good deal of the general inertia here.

New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu (R) told the Washington Examiner that was on the verge of running for Senate and but then he talked it over with Republican senators.

Said Sununu: “They were all, for the most part, content with the speed at which they weren’t doing anything. It was very clear that we just have to hold the line for two years. OK, so I’m just going to be a roadblock for two years. That’s not what I do.”

re: #62 Teddy’s Person

My bed needs replacing. I ordered a new one, just waiting for delivery (hopefully some time this month. I ordered it two months ago). I also bought a new mattress which I’m holding off getting until the new bed arrives. My bed is super fucked up and I sleep at an angle because one of the side supports collapsed, but the only option would be to put the mattress on the floor, of which I’d never be able to get up from.

I love my life.

There’s the small matter of the wife of a Supreme Court Justice not accepting the judgement of the US Judicial System that the election was fair.

Comment to that article:

“At many stages in the advance of humanity, this conflict between the men who possess more than they have earned and the men who have earned more than they possess is the central condition of progress. In our day it appears as the struggle of free men to gain and hold the right of self-government as against the special interests, who twist the methods of free government into machinery for defeating the popular will. At every stage, and under all circumstances, the essence of the struggle is to equalize opportunity, destroy privilege, and give to the life and citizenship of every individual the highest possible value both to himself and to the commonwealth.”

The internet tells me (so it must be true) that disorientation is a symptom of flu, brought on by dehydration from diarrhea and vomiting.

Also, I’ve been to the doctor twice and let a dental assistant stick her hands in my mouth, as well as nasty instruments, and I didn’t catch anything. They are very careful about those things at medical offices — they have to be.

My eldest brother brought home (among many other things) U2’s first promo EPs before “Boy” was recorded from his college radio gig. I fell in love. Bono’s mostly embarrassed in the article about his untrained voice, but that was the best. My interest in the band declined as Bono’s pursuit of a better voice increased. So I guess I kind of checked out in the late ’80s? But I’m not embarrassed for my fandom. I saw them in Boston 5 or 6 years ago and thought it was a terrific concert.

Sold 22 library of America volumes to somebody on eBay for 200 bucks, “free” shipping. Figured I’d come out around 160 on my end. Nope. First, eBay calculated my final valuation fees WITH SALES TAX TO INCLUDED. Yes, they literally charged me a 15% fee on the state sales tax the guy paid. And my “free” shipping meant I was in the hole for around 25 bucks starting out. Fees were 32.24. In other words, my overhead for selling on ebay wound being roughly 1/3rd of what I sold the damned thing for.

I have long given up on eBay. And I was one of the very early users of it, even back before it was promoted by Art Bell and other radio hosts.

eBay is not for individuals anymore. It is for companies who are small and don’t want the hassle of keeping their own commercial website up to date daily.

I’ve pretty much given up on selling anything on line at this point. I never really used eBay, but I sold a lot of stuff on Reverb for a few years. Must have moved 20 guitars in that time.

After they got bought by Etsy, they stopped using Paypal and starting requiring a bank account number for payment. Couldn’t bring myself to give them that info, so now it’s back to Craig’s List and Facebook’s gear groups selling locally.

Yep. Ordered four myself then found out I could do the same from my office, so I got two more there. Figured I’d get a couple of extras so we can share with neighbors when they say they have concerns about possible exposure…oh, one of your friends who was visiting found out her husband has Covid? The National Desk (Sinclair Media):

WASHINGTON (TND) — As former President Donald Trump vows to “take back the White House,” other Republicans eying a run for the Oval Office face difficult decisions as they attempt to keep their 2024 options open without attracting his fury.

“This is maybe the most important election we’ve ever had, but I do believe 2024 will be even more important,” Trump said at a rally in Arizona Saturday. “This is the year we are going to take back the House, we are going to take back the Senate and we are going to take back America.”

Trump’s political future was in doubt when he left Washington last January in the shadow of the Jan. 6 riot, but he has emerged as a powerful force in the GOP, prodding the party to embrace his baseless claims of election fraud. He has not announced plans to run again, but allies say he is likely to mount another campaign if President Joe Biden looks beatable next spring.

Several top Republicans have indicated they would not take on Trump if he seeks the presidential nomination. Others have said Trump’s plans would have no bearing on their decision, but it currently seems doubtful anyone could mount a credible challenge to the party’s most prominent figure - and Trump aims to keep it that way.

Trump has taken aim at Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in recent days, calling him “dull” in private and publicly suggesting he is “gutless” for not confirming his vaccine booster status. According to media reports, the former president has grown frustrated that DeSantis, who he once endorsed, has not publicly ruled out running against him in 2024.

Riding a wave of conservative praise of his response to the COVID-19 pandemic, DeSantis has consistently topped polls of possible Republican 2024 candidates without Trump on the ballot. The Florida governor has downplayed tensions with Trump, accusing the media of trying to rile up conflict while remaining vague about his plans beyond his 2022 reelection bid.

“You cannot fall for the bait…,” DeSantis said on the “Ruthless” podcast last week. “You know what they’re trying to do, so just don’t take it. Just keep on keeping on. We need everybody united for a big red wave in 2022.”

According to former political media consultant Tobe Berkovitz, avoiding the Trump question is the “smartest move” for prospective Republican candidates. However, as DeSantis’ experience demonstrates, sidestepping Trump is easier said than done, especially for those the former president believes pose the greatest threat to him.

“Trump has great radar for spotting who the comers are,” said Berkovitz, a professor of advertising at Boston University. “As soon as he sees that you are starting to really become somebody, then he is going to make it his objective to make you nobody. That puts a politician in a damned-if-you-do, damned-if-you-don’t situation.”

In a Quinnipiac University poll released last week, 59% of Americans said they would prefer if Trump does not seek a return to the White House in 2024. Nearly 70% of Republicans want Trump to run again, but GOP support has slid almost 10 points since October.

That leaves Trump as a clear frontrunner in a Republican primary contest, even if his standing in a general election race is less certain. Some recent surveys have suggested Trump could beat Biden in a 2020 rematch, but others indicate Biden still holds an advantage despite his sagging approval ratings.

“Credible Republicans with governing experience should challenge Trump,” former White House communications director Alyssa Farah Griffin tweeted Monday. “There’s zero reason to nominate Trump again when R’s have a bench & Biden is polling in the 30s.”

The prospect of another Trump run has stirred growing concern among the former president’s GOP critics. According to CNN, Griffin and about three dozen other former Trump administration officials held a conference call Monday to strategize efforts to fend off his influence in 2022 and 2024 - including retired Gen. John Kelly, Trump’s former chief of staff.

And they’re based in Michigan. Duluth Trading, originally based in Duluth MN, moved to WI.

I wear their stuff almost every day; heavyweight t-shirts with a good glasses pocket.

I have one of their jackets that’s a gift from one of my brothers-in-law; I wear it to do the snowblowing and bitter cold work, as it’s warmer than my leather jacket for long exposure.

LEELANAU COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) — If you live in northern Michigan long enough, you eventually think you’ve seen everything possible that you could make out of, or to look like a Petoskey stone.

I sure thought that, but I was wrong.

Just outside of Bob Dekorne’s Leelanau County garage, right next to the recycling bin, is a stump.

It’s a little ironic because inside that garage is what Bob recycled the tree into.

“When that came down, it was such beautiful wood. I couldn’t cut it up for firewood,” Bob said. “So, I slammed it up and the first thing I tried was a guitar.”

Creating unique and beautiful guitars out of northern Michigan wood struck a chord with him.

“I have probably made 45 or 50 total. I’ve sold 15 or 20. I’ve donated some to charities which is something I really love doing with them,” Bob said. “And my wife will tell you I probably have 20 laying around the house.”

Bob finds wood, even if it’s an old dynamite box his dad brought back from World War II and turns it into things like this:

“Well, yeah, I’m the oddball guy,” Bob said. “I have no desire to make anything typical. I’m a retired guy, I can do this for fun and I get to do whatever I want.”

So, when he saw the work of local painter Sally Peckham caught his eye

“I saw some of her work and thought, ‘this would be awesome,’” Bob said. “The collaborations with other folks really keeps me jazzed and doing it again, you know, so I gave her three bodies.”

Now Sally here isn’t quite the self-described oddball that Bob is.

“I usually paint canvas acrylic,” Sally said. “I do a lot of landscapes of our area.”

But she does have two things going for her, a wildly creative side and a love of all things Michigan.

“I had been practicing some painted some Petoskey stones on regular canvas,” sally said. “So, I thought, ‘wouldn’t it be cool to have a guitar that look like a wonderful big stone.’ I mean, that’s, you know, our area and our stone and so I gave it a shot.”

There is guitar rock, and then there is what Sally painted and Bob assembled — a rock guitar.

University of Michigan president fired for cause due to misuse of email - but it gets worse:

Women who say they were sexually assaulted by a former sports doctor at the University of Michigan are hoping that a change in leadership with the weekend firing of President Mark Schlissel will allow the school be more accountable toward abuse victims.

Keith Moree and Robert Stone told reporters Tuesday that the Ann Arbor school is ripe for a culture change as its board conducts a search to permanently replace Schlissel who was removed due to an alleged “inappropriate relationship with a university employee.”

They say Schlissel’s abrupt firing and the revelations and litigation over decades of sexual abuse by Dr. Robert Anderson have tarnished Michigan’s reputation.

Putin does not like the US much these days:

WASHINGTON (TND) — Russia is using ransomware groups as a bargaining chip to entice the U.S. to steer clear of future economic sanctions, cyber experts warn.

President Joe Biden got a win earlier this week when Moscow arrested more than a dozen Russia-based ransomware operators, one of whom was involved in the attack last summer against the Colonial Pipeline. That intrusion took one of the U.S.’s largest oil pipelines out of commission for nearly a week.

I have long given up on eBay. And I was one of the very early users of it, even back before it was promoted by Art Bell and other radio hosts.

eBay is not for individuals anymore. It is for companies who are small and don’t want the hassle of keeping their own commercial website up to date daily.

Ebay’s fees are actually lower than their competitors’. IMHO it’s quite reasonable for the traffic you get.

Sure, if Mitt can get with the Democrats to halt the filibuster _only_ for this one bill, and get a couple of other Republicans, he can be on the right side of history.

But isn’t it true that a change to Senate rules only requires a majority? So if 2 GOP members (replacing Sinema and Manchin) signed up, that would be sufficient.
