We talked about Crypto dot com on (I think?) Sunday. More is coming out about the theft.

crypto.com denies funds were lost after ‘suspicious activity’, as security firm estimates $15 million went missing

crypto.com has resumed withdrawals after suspending them Monday to investigate unauthorized activity on accounts.

The exchange’s CEO denied funds had been lost, despite Tweets from PeckShield inc. stating $15 million was lost

The 14-hour outage comes after a UK watchdog banned several crypto.com ads for misleading information.

Crypto exchange crypto.com started allowing customers to make withdrawals again, having suspended them Monday while it investigated reports that accounts had been broken into.

The Singapore-based exchange halted withdrawals after getting reports of suspicious activity on accounts, it said on Twitter.

The crypto.com move came after worried customers said their funds had been compromised in posts to social media platforms. Entrepreneur and crypto enthusiast Ben Baller tweeted that he had 4.28 in ether, worth around $14,000 at the time according to CoinMarketCap data, taken from his wallet.

After a 14-hour outage, the company said Monday that withdrawal services had been restored, but warned it would take time to clear the backlogs.

“This update will be rolled out to users progressively over the next few hours. Once complete, withdrawals will be re-enabled,” it said in a tweet.

crypto.com said it had beefed up the exchange’s two-factor authentication and advised people to update the security tool on its app.

The exchange’s CEO Kris Marszalek took to Twitter early on Tuesday to deny that any customer funds had been lost.

“Some thoughts from me on the last 24 hours: no customer funds were lost, the downtime of withdrawal infra was ~ 14 hours, our team has hardened the infrastructure in response to the incident,” he said.

“We will share a post mortem after the internal investigation is completed.”

While users await a full post explanation, blockchain security firm PeckShield, an etherscan.io recommended vendor, revealed about $15 million worth of ethereum had been lost. After analyzing data on etherscan, the Chinese security firm noticed that ethereum was being sent to Tornado Cash in batches of 10 and 100 ether.

Tornado Cash allows users to keep transactions private, since ethereum transactions can be monitored on the blockchain by anyone sites like this allow users to obscure the link between the recipient and the sender. This function can then be taken advantage of by users that wish to launder cryptocurrencies.

PeckShield was last in the news when they shed light on the $200 million worth of crypto drained from BitMart during a similar suspension in December last year.

crypto.com is currently under scrutiny for its advertising practises in the UK. Britain’s advertising watchdog banned two promotions in January, saying they were irresponsible and misleading for consumers.

In November, crypto.com bought the naming rights to the iconic Staple Center, home to the LA Lakers, Clippers, Sparks and the Kings. The $700 million deal was part of a concentrated marketing campaign by the exchange, which includes an ads blitz with actor and investor Matt Damon.

Government authorities across the world have tightened regulations for crypto, which has grown exponentially, becoming a $3 trillion industry at one point in November.

LOL

If you’re a cold-cut lover, one of the most dividing debates is whether to call your sandwich a “hero” or a “sub” — we’ll leave that unanswered. However, there’s an even meatier topic at hand: Do you put bologna on your face?

Sure, if you’re a cafeteria kid poking holes in your bologna to make a face you may have been silly enough to do. But apparently, that’s not just reserved for the kids anymore.

Oscar Mayer’s new Bologna Hydrogel Sheet Face Mask on Amazon, although containing no meat, is one of the buzzworthy, unexpected things to come out of 2022 — and we’re not even three weeks in.

We thought we’d be tired of hearing about masks after the trying pandemic-ridden years we’ve faced (read: best KF94 masks) but, for $5, it’s a mask that certainly wowed us.

Property management already sending me “new lease to sign” seven freakin’ months before the old lease terminates. They want an extra 30 bucks a month. I bit my tongue on my first reply and then emailed to say I’d need much more time to think about this and to get back with me sometime in mid-may. I did tell them I appreciated the early notice of a rent rise, as landlords often aren’t real good about that. Who knows? They may like the fact that I’m a trouble-free tenant enough who actually pays on time to where they might negotiate a bit. I mean, it’s taken them two freakin’ months to get a new refrigerator in to replace the one that will unceremoniously make it into the….how should I say it….Whirlpool sometime on Friday. (Whirlpools are apparently complete pieces of crap. The service guy spent about 10 minutes opening the fridge doors and showing the property guy just how shoddy the workmanship is on that crap, including cawking in various spaces because apparently the machine tolerances are so shitty that the freezer compartments leak like sieves.)

When did this 60 vote barrier become a thing? When I was young, except for a few (very few) filibusters, it took a simple majority to pass legislation. When did this radical change occur to obstruct basically almost all legislation? Was it simply the decision to replace a talking filibuster with anyone raising their hand and saying “filibuster” without a requirement to take any other action? Is that when this all started?

It became a barrier when it became mandatory for Republicans to oppose anything Democrats wanted to do because A Black Man Was President. If their irrational hatred of Obama hadn’t driven them to be completely reactionary and anti-democratic, we might not be having this conversation today.

A 63-year-old Arizona man charged with seditious conspiracy for his role in the deadly Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol said he returned to the scene the next morning for “recon” as Congress was completing its delayed election certification, according to court documents. Edward Vallejo, who prosecutors say told others he was “waiting for orders from [Oath Keeper founder] Stewart Rhodes,” is accused of playing a central role in the far-right paramilitary group’s attempt to thwart the transfer of power to Joe Biden. In a court filing late Tuesday calling for Vallejo to be detained ahead of trial, prosecutors say he continued to plot against the federal government even after the violence of Jan. 6 ended. The next morning, he allegedly messaged other members of the group in a Signal chat: “We are going to probe their defense line right now 6 am they should let us in. We’ll see.” He and other members of a “quick reaction force” he led were apparently also prepared to wage battle in the city for weeks. Ahead of the Jan. 6 riot, Vallejo and others “wheeled in bags and large bins of weapons, ammunition, and essential supplies to last 30 days,” prosecutors wrote.

You know, I’m pretty much out of any compassion for these dipshits. That ridiculous concept, herd immunity, that getting sick on purpose is just the smartest way to deal with a deadly virus, is beyond stupid. Stupid doesn’t even cover it, it’s selfish, arrogant, careless and completely based on fantasy. Vaccines are the reason herd immunity exists.

At this point, and I know it’s mean and not very compassionate, but maybe losing these people will help more than hurt over the long haul. I feel for families that have suffered these losses, anyone you love dying is a painful thing that you never quite get past. But I don’t feel anything but anger at the people who willingly endanger the lives of others by being so damned sure they are right and the rest of us are too beneath them to understand their special wisdom. A West Virginia firefighter and part-time police officer used a dead paramedic’s name to groom an underage girl while at the man’s memorial service, according to new revelations included in an FBI search warrant obtained by The Daily Beast.

During the solemn ceremony, Christopher Lee Osborne, 25, sent a Snapchat message under the name “Richard Smith” to a 17-year-old junior firefighter who was also there, saying he wanted to “fuck” the 16-year-old girl next to her, states the newly unsealed warrant. The real Richard Smith, a retired lieutenant and 37-year veteran of the ambulance corps, was being laid to rest after dying from COVID-related complications.

Osborne allegedly operated almost like a mini Jeffrey Epstein, according to the warrant, which accuses the disgraced first responder of using his teenage subordinate, identified in the filing only as “M.H.,” to procure additional teen girls to allegedly assault at the firehouse.

“M.H. stated that she gave in to Osborne’s demands in part because it was important to her to succeed as a junior firefighter and to be accepted by Osborne and other firefighters,” the warrant says.

Meanwhile in Kyiv, Ukraine, their militias are training..

In cities across Ukraine, there are billboards that show a smiling young man beckoning in full battle gear. “Learn how to defend your home today,” the message says.

The advertisement from Ukraine’s Territorial Defense Forces, an offshoot of the army, seems to be working. As Ukrainians prepare for a possible Russian invasion, thousands of citizens are volunteering to train in case they have to help protect their cities.

On the edge of a forest outside Kyiv, about 60 men and women line up to begin six hours of military tactical training on a frigid Saturday morning.

Civilian clothes are left inside cars parked along the dirt road. Dressed in battle fatigues and cradling guns and wooden replicas, this group is ready for action.

“I decided for me, it’s time to be prepared,” says Yegor Soboliev, a former member of Ukraine’s parliament. Soboliev says he signed up after Russian President Vladimir Putin began to move troops to Ukraine’s border.

Members of the Territorial Defense Forces stretch before taking part in training in January. As Ukrainians prepare for a possible Russian invasion, thousands of citizens are volunteering to train in case they have to help protect their cities.
Pete Kiehart for NPR
“This is a good way of being trained for people who have jobs, families and for older people,” he says with a chuckle. “I think this will change the situation with our security dramatically.”

Soboliev says Ukraine, like Israel, should be prepared for war at any minute to protect its independence.

Multiple people were killed after a vehicle rollover accident involving U.S. Marines on Wednesday in Jacksonville, North Carolina.

The 2nd Marine Logistics Group, based at Camp Lejeune, confirmed on Twitter that there were “multiple casualties” in the accident.

“We are aware of a vehicle rollover in Jacksonville, North Carolina, involving service members with 2nd MLG,” the Logistics Group wrote on Twitter. “We are working closely with @camp_lejeune and Onslow County officials to gather details regarding this incident.”

The accident occurred in the area of U.S Highway 17 and state Highway 210, near Camp Lejeune, Onslow County Sheriff Hans Miller told WNCT.

A witness told WITN News that a Marine 5-ton truck carrying several Marines was the vehicle that overturned, and that a medical helicopter arrived to transport injured servicemembers.

The Q were, literally, TNG’s god-in-a-box. The introduction of such characters really stretched ST deep into fantasy territory.

Yes, TOS had a couple of episodes with antagonists who were super-beings, and such episodes gave the TNG writers cover in defending the idea of introducing the Q.

While I think Picard will make great use of the tease that Q could poof Picard back into a different outcome than in the finale of the first season, I also believe it will be a tease.

Because Patrick Stewart is now at an age where he needs to play the final Picard episode. As much as people love him, Stewart is now getting to that very old age where his time on screen is coming to an end.

Every time I start thinking Gorsuch is the worst, Alito or Thomas remind me of how terrible they are.

The FBI is conducting what it described as “court-authorized” law enforcement activity at the Laredo home of U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar.

Although FBI spokesperson Roseanne Hughes did not identify what the agency is investigating, she did issue a statement acknowledging the activity.

Asked for a statement about the FBI’s presence at Cuellar’s home, Hughes confirmed law enforcement activity in the area.

“The FBI was present in the vicinity of Windridge Drive and Estate Drive in Laredo conducting court-authorized law enforcement activity,” the statement read. “The FBI cannot provide further comment on an ongoing investigation.”

Thomas dissents because there might be something bad in there and he’s fully corrupt.

How about, his wife Ginni’s into it up to her eyeballs and there’s probably something in those tranches of documents which indicate it.

Oh, in other news, the tiny town of Brookside, AL, population 1,253 has somewhere between nine and 16 police officers (it’s unknown) but half of its funding since 2018 has come from ratcheting up the number of traffic citations it’s issued.

Ramon Perez came to court last month ready to fight the tickets he’d been handed by Brookside police, including one for rolling through a stop sign and another for driving 48 mph in a 40 zone.

He swore he’d seen the cop from a distance and was careful as he braked.

“I saw him and we looked eye to eye,” the Chelsea business owner said. “There’s no way I was going to run that stop sign.”

When he got to court Dec. 2, he saw scores of people just like him lining up to stand before Judge Jim Wooten, complaining of penny-ante “crimes” and harassment by officers. He saw so many people trying to park in the grassy field outside the municipal building that police had to direct traffic.

He figured there was no point.

“I saw the same attitude in every officer and every person,” he said. “That’s why I hesitated to fight it. They were doing the same thing to every person that was there. They own the town.”

Perez, it appears, was right.

Oh, and apparently this teeny tiny town has TWO police dogs, to wit:

(I found this when I went to look for the police department, which has apparently nuked its Facebook. I made sure to drop a link to the AL dot com article and point out that Brookside has 1,253 people in it.)

Because Patrick Stewart is now at an age where he needs to play the final Picard episode. As much as people love him, Stewart is now getting to that very old age where his time on screen is coming to an end.

The older people get, the more alike they look. There was a guy where I used to live who looked like Patrick Stewart with about 10 more years. There are 3 guys in this town who qualify.

It works on the young end, too. Babies all look alike. I’m the only one of my siblings who can tell my twin sisters apart in their first photo (twins included, I think).
