WATCH LIVE: White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki vs. The White House Press Corps

Politics • Views: 19,018

I have to confess one of the reasons I’m watching these press briefings: to see how low the White House press corps will go today. Was there ever a time when at least some of the reporters at these briefings didn’t ask incredibly stupid gotcha questions? I must have been dreaming that.

I fear tonight was the beginning of the end of the Senate being the legislative body that stands in the way of radical change by either party.

Friendly reminder: Senate Republicans aren’t actually interested in legislating because they know, deep down, that their stated agenda would actually be very unpopular with voters and they’d be routed in subsequent elections in all but the deepest red states. This is why I believe to my core that the Republicans will never do away with the filibuster if given the opportunity.

So Russia may try to fuck around in Ukraine, daring Europe to do something about it.

They just may find out, throwing the western world into a potential Nuclear Exchange.

We’re just waiting for her to take the 5th along with so many others in Trumpworld should they actually testify instead of refusing altogther (as if refusal is not implicitly admitting that they have something to hide).

The Email lady didn’t refuse to testify. She testified under oath for hours.. and the GOP couldn’t lay a finger on her. Didn’t take the 5th either.

Greg Abbott’s politically-driven border policy is being enforced harshly in only a couple of counties, and otherwise being dropped in many cases where the county attorney recognizes migrants with a credible asylum claim.

“…Instead of sitting in jail for 6 months to a year on trespassing charges, as Abbott suggested, some immigrants are resolving their cases in far less time or being released from jail on bond. They are then free to stay in the U.S. as they make their claims for asylum.”
…….
“Operation Lone Star has allowed our clients to avoid federal programs where they would have not only been expelled, but would have had to remain in Mexico [amid] pending asylum proceedings,” said Kristin Etter, an attorney with Texas RioGrande Legal Aid who has represented more than 700 of the migrants. “Furthermore, even if our clients are convicted of criminal trespass under Operation Lone Star, that has no impact on their immigration status and does not make them ineligible for asylum or other forms of immigration relief.”
…….
“…Last week … a Travis County judge dismissed the case against a migrant arrested on criminal trespassing charges in Kinney County, ruling that Abbott’s arrest plan runs afoul of the U.S. Constitution by obstructing the federal government’s enforcement of immigration laws.”

I’m slightly surprised there hasn’t been any effort in any state to try and move at least one chamber of the state legislatures to proportional representation.

Since state senates can no longer represent counties regardless of population, it would make a bit more sense to have one chamber with proportional representation and the other with single member districts. The flip side is that proportional representation gives the parties too much power, and that’s not really been something Americans have been willing to tolerate for the last 100 years or so.

Germany elects half of its Parliament by direct mandate and half by proportion: each party puts up a list of candidates and they are selected starting at the top of the list based on the party’s share of the vote.

For that, Germany has over 700 representatives for only about one quarter of the US population

re: #78 Belafon

Proportional representation wouldn’t allow states that elect Democratic governors have Republican supermajorities.

It would also probably weaken Democratic majorities in solid blue states - for example, in California Dems hold a super-majority in the Assembly (60 of 80 seats) but based on presidential and gubernatorial elections, would likely lose 7 or 8 seats.

It just seems like a type of reform that should at least be discussed

I’m solidly in the camp that the House should be expanded. I also think the California legislature should be expanded/reformed - 80 Assembly members and 40 Senators for a state with nearly 40m people is absurd.

And probably unlikely to change since in our polarized and charged political environment one or the other party would view a change as being sufficiently disadvantageous that they would solidly oppose it.

Self-imposed 2nd class. And they constantly compare themselves to those who have been purposefully scapegoated and treated as 2nd class by governmental and social entities repeatedly. And seriously punished for that instead of being subject to relatively weak mandates and some verbal scolding.

I still think the change will come when the insurance companies seriously decide to pass on the costs to those who refuse to get the shots. Once people are taking the hit directly to their wallet you will see how serious they are about these so-called principles and religious objections.

I’m not aware of any such law. I’m also not sure it’s ever actually been tried at any level beyond the local level.

I like it. Anything that forces part of the system to accommodate actual people’s preferences.

I have to say, this infuriates me.

Vaccinated patients are more likely to survive a coronavirus infection than unvaccinated ones, and health-care workers might give them more attention as a medical judgment rather than a moral one. (But such calculus is tricky: “You should preferentially give monoclonal antibodies to unvaccinated people,” Wynia told me, because each dose will be more likely to keep someone out of the hospital.)

Sure, give limited resources to those who did nothing to care for themselves. Taking that same limited resources away from someone who may need it but actually did the right thing because they will maybe survive is bullshit.

I hate selfish, ignorant unvaxxed people with the heat of 1000 Suns.

re: #161 danarchy

I get the sentiment, but that is a slippery slope. Do you deny healthcare to smokers? They are making a bad choice that leads to horrible health outcomes, how about the morbidly obese? Drug users? People who participate in extreme sports and inevitably injure themselves?

They all make bad life choices that can land them in the hospital, do they all get to the back of the line too?

When the hospitals are so overflowing they’ve got patients in tents in the parking lot, there’s twice as many patients per nurse as State Law requires, when they can’t admit heart attacks and strokes because there’s no room in the ICU… that’s not ordinary we-don’t-wanna standards. That’s necessary triage, they call it crisis care, and the slope isn’t slippery at all.

Last I heard, there were several hundred people arrested for staging a coup attempt at the Capitol.

Not the same day as the coup attempt

Because the arresting officers had just been fighting, outnumbered and outgunned, for hours to protect our Legislative branch. Stop this bullshit.

The freaking point is that Rep Bowman got arrested AT THE RIGHT TO VOTE PROTEST.

It was not violent, but he STILL GOT ARRESTED AT THE PROTEST.

unlike the trumpsters who beat up cops and destroyed federal property.

What part of that is “BULLSHIT”???

I have to say, this infuriates me.

Sure, give limited resources to those who did nothing to care for themselves. Taking that same limited resources away from someone who may need it but actually did the right thing because they will maybe survive is bullshit.

I hate selfish, ignorant unvaxxed people with the heat of 1000 Suns.

If you need a liver transplant but won’t quit drinking, they won’t give you one either.

Smoking and obesity aren’t contagious diseases that put others at risk.
