Just read up on the Alex Murdaugh cases. Wow.

Accused of hiring a hitman to kill his son.
Person of interest in the shootings of his family members (in which he was also shot.)
Accused of stealing millions from his clients.

also from today’s electoral-vote.com regarding biden’s ‘gaffe’ and mcconnell’s ‘racism’

This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things

they both get a pass for being ‘inartful’

The thing is, if a person is going to speak off the cuff for 2 minutes, or for 2 hours, not every statement is going to be perfectly formed. If perfection, or near-perfection, is the standard, then a politician can limit themselves to speeches, prepared remarks, press releases, and other forms of expression that are put together in advance and carefully edited and vetted. And if that is what is required to avoid “Can you believe [X] said [Y]?” stories, because the press has to turn every molehill of a gaffe into a mountain, then they really ought not complain about the lack of press conferences.

I guess his anti-vax status will become part of all that. But all I can think at this moment is to blame the virus first and foremost.

It’s hard to describe how weird the NFT concept is: it’s like those Franklin Mint junky coins, and you get a CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY with it, but with NFTs you don’t actually own the coin, or even a picture of the coin, or the rights to do anything with the coin. And the CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY is a URL that points to some rando site somewhere that could go away at any time. But hey, it’s worth tens and hundreds of thousands of bucks, right?

In other news, crypto is taking an enormous dump, because nothing says “currency of the future” like an energy-eating monstrosity with wild swings in value and huge transaction costs:

It’s always easier to destroy than create. And the flipside of Republicans distilling themselves is that the rest of the country needs representation too, and in our FPTP system, Dems are by necessity that representation. But that means we’re more disparate and conglomerated, and less likely to be a single-minded monolith by comparison.

The old-right and the neo-cons are really on the hype train of Biden giving Ukraine to Russia.

I see this as their pivot, the way to change the headlines from Trump after riding the Trump train for nearly 6 years.

Never mind that Trump was Putin’s tool and I do not doubt that Putin would love to have Trump in office right now.

One thing remains true: nothing quite like a good war to rally political points.

The complicated business of politics is to negotiate agreements between groups with different interests with the object of finding a common way forward.

This can only happen when all parties and agree on the premise.

Right now only one side does.

The other does not market anything ‘participatory’. They are after authoritarian and dictatorial power and domination by force of will.

re: #12 ericblair

Part of why I like the video is that it gets full into the fact that the people inside the NFT sphere don’t really care what they own, just that their ownership means that they profit when the thing goes up in price because it’s perceived as appreciating. The art is bad because the art doesn’t matter (even when they protest they like the art); that it’s a link doesn’t matter: the whole idea is trying to sell to the next guy that the hyperlink will go up in value.

Like, the not making sense is a feature…NFTs are pure speculative value without the elaborate validation process that physical art undergoes to become valuable.

Hopefully, this whole ecosystem will fail, but what’s scary is that the cryptobros are the bottom rung of the system, . That VCs and major corporations are toying with blockchains technology—it can be used to monetize everything and creates an entirely new way of harvesting data—might not give up on the concept as fast as the entrepreneurial speculators, though.

The wild thing is the whole business is eerily similar to the “banana duct taped to a wall” art piece that rustled so many jimmies a few year back.

“Kansas is pushing lawmakers to fast-track legislation creating the state’s largest business incentive program ever as officials say a $4 billion factory could be on the line,” the Kansas City Star reports.

“But state officials said they can’t give lawmakers or the public details because they signed non-disclosure agreements with the mystery company. The lack of transparency, paired with Kansas’ history of failed and secretive incentive programs, has left some lawmakers skeptical.”

It’s pretty clear what the political tactics are becoming: show Biden as very weak in order to push the strong-man narrative of Trump.

Even though Trump was very bad at foreign affairs, but facts don’t matter much in politics.

It’s all very depressing, because the masses of Trumpists and old-time war-mongers just eat this stuff up.

Truth is the first casualty in war.

Still, I believe the American public has no appetite for yet another war, and I also believe Biden knows this.

Putin knows this too but he and his oligarch buddies look at the world as a way to become obsessively rich, so to them all that matters is manipulating whoever they need in order to build some great paternalistic Russian empire.

Here’s one of the longer running questions for the USA: on whose side should we be in international conflicts?

I for one am not willing to see a world war over Ukraine. Sorry, Ukraine. But in a world with 8 billion people all struggling to survive I’m more inclined to be worried about how to survive myself.

Cold hearted? Maybe. But I have no idea how to ever win a land war with Russia. It’s not going to happen.

In my parents’ day (yeah, yeah, I’m a geezer) community college in every city in all 50 states was 100% taxpayer-funded, zero tuition. (most of the students still lived with their parents). State Universities were 80% taxpayer-funded, tuition was approximately equal to what you could earn at a 3 month minimum-wage summer job.

Mom and Dad both had summer jobs, and dad had his GI bennies, but that all went to grad school. When he got his MD, he had 0 debt.

Of course, voters were okay with this back then, because in 40 states the colleges were explicitly, by law, whites only.

When the parties were both in agreement that blacks, hispanics and asians weren’t real people and shouldn’t have all the rights of all the other citizens, it made it a lot easier for the parties to find reasonable compromise on almost everything else.

It’s a school district…of course. The full description makes it sound like they need a QA manager to interpret the needs of the district, an automation architect to design and build a framework, and a lead to write test plans and perform executions…for $48/hr.

Granted, you can buy a house there for less than the price of a decent car, so you’d likely have a mortgage of about $250 a month…$750 if you wanted to pay it off in six years.

Jesus…rents in Jackson are 800-1000 a month. One could easily buy a house and pay it off in six years on rent alone.

Two hours on crypto, NFTs, and how they’re both in the short-term scammy and heralds of a far worse system. I learned quite a lot.

I just started watching this, but I scrolled through the sources and I know some of those people, people I trust to know that cryptocurrency, bitcoin, the blockchain, NFTs and suchlike are fundamentally problematic.

Other whites and minorities go to the same public schools. We are Middle-Middle-Middle and all 4 of my kids went to the city schools every day they were in-country.

Olson’s a good researcher and shows his sources, which I greatly respect. I’ve watched other people on these subjects who were very interesting, or just entertaining, but I respect the way he’s pulled together information from others, done participant observation, and tried to understand the context of the cryptosphere.

He’s one of the best essayists on Youtube, IMO.

You’re presuming they’ll stop with Ukraine.

I’m presuming that any military venture Putin does will blow up in his face.

Russia needs, depends upon, foreign purchase of their carbon resources.

And that is partly what this Ukraine thing is about (pipelines through Ukraine.)

All Putin can hope for is that his bluff gets him a puppet government in Ukraine. If that happens then he has succeeded.

But if he gets into a ground war Putin (and everybody else) loses.

oh, i see what you mean. I often wonder if folks from places like New York City or San Francisco understand about the standard of living in much of the southeast. my property management is wanting to raise my rent to around 675 next go-around, and for that, I have a one bedroom with a private balcony, washer/dryer, dishwasher. It’s not the newest apartment in the world, but I’m assuming this would be 3,000 minimum anywhere within commuting distance of The City (either one of them!). If I could swing a house, which I can’t because apparently I’m not allowed by God’s will to keep the same combination of jobs for more than two years at a time, my mortgage with home insurance could easily be as low as 300 a month on a 30 year loan for what folks in the fancy seement enclaves would need half-a-mill for. The catch? People actually want to live in San Francisco or New York City. Not so much Williamston, SC. Though it does have its charms.

Growing up in a military family, I was lucky to be raised in a desegregated environment.

When my kids were little, we made a point of finding a town and neighborhood that was desegregated so that my kids could have the same opportunity. And I’m pleased to say we succeeded in helping them avoid the prejudices that plague so much of the country.

Funny how selling fear of others fails when experience makes the lies obvious.

We took a huge hit moving from Lexington, KY to New England, but that’s where I could find permanent employment. We went into pretty steep credit card debt because all the things we had been putting off—dental care, a reliable car, etc.—came due at the same time. A couple of years ago a promotion put us on a more stable level, but we still can’t afford to buy a house here, esp., in the last couple of years when already astronomical prices went up by 30%. The price of a townhouse we’re renting would by you a nice home with a large yard in Lexington (and compared to much of the rest of Kentucky, Lexington is pretty pricey). But I’m grateful to have a consistent job—I know the agony of what you’re going through quite well.

It is the state’s first lawsuit to challenge a new law that allows religious adoption agencies to deny service to families whose religious or moral beliefs aren’t in sync with the provider’s, the family’s attorney told Knox News on Wednesday.

The adoption agency, the Holston United Methodist Home for Children based in Greeneville, Tennessee, denied Elizabeth and Gabriel Rutan-Ram from acquiring Tennessee-mandated foster-parent training and a home-study certification as they attempted to adopt a child from Florida last year, the Rutan-Rams say.

And it’s not worth trying.

You make sure that all of the Russian armor is destroyed and its ground troops are defenseless by taking air superiority from them. This is dangerous, but necessary.

What is the alternative? Letting a pisspot asshole dictator European Foreign Policy when he has a GDP the size of Texas when Europe has a GDP bigger than the US?

You just can’t let that happen.

Patriot Front Fascist Leak Exposes Nationwide Racist Campaigns

Patriot Front, known for its disconcerting masked ‘flash rallies’ and racist sticker campaigns, was organized by Thomas Rousseau in the immediate aftermath of 2017’s Unite the Right march in Charlottesville, VA. Rousseau gained power within the group’s predecessor organization, Vanguard America, in the fallout from the nationally orchestrated event. After James Alex Fields, seen sporting a Vanguard America shield during the march, murdered Heather Heyer, Rousseau moved to split with Vanguard America, taking with it most of the members as well as the website domain name “bloodandsoil.org.”

Vanguard America’s ‘bloodandsoil.org’ domain was reconfigured to support Patriot Front’s main internal communications system: a self-hosted instance of RocketChat, an open-source chat server software similar to Slack and Discord; messaging platforms with multiple channels.

Information security in this centralized communications project failed almost entirely. Sources provided Unicorn Riot with screenshots, audio recordings of meetings (self-hosted on another system called Mumble), extracted texts of group chats and even the private direct message system. Chat messages contained dozens of links to unlocked, public mega.nz cloud storage directories, which hosted more than 400 gigabytes of raw videos and photos of Patriot Front events, gatherings, scouting for vandalizing Black monuments, and much more. Most of the materials come from the latter half of 2021, including a rally in Washington, D.C.

I don’t think Putin will move against Ukraine without the go-ahead from his American accomplices. That’s right, I am really starting to suspect that the Fifth Column tail is wagging the Kremlin dog. Consider, for example, that the Republican Party collectively has a higher GDP than Russia itself. To begin with, they are connected to Russia at the hip through Big Oil. They can help Putin by weakening US resistance to Russian re-expansion and are sometimes painfully obvious in their ham fisted efforts to do so. In turn, the Repugs benefit from services the Kremlin can provide that they cannot provide for themselves, like massive troll farms and extra-legal espionage that is too risky for even the GOP. For its part, Russia ranks as a world power only because of the aging Soviet legacy of nuclear weapons, global intelligence, and influence capability. The ruling oligarchs appear all powerful mostly because they deliberately cultivate that image, but they are in fact rather run of the mill billionaires, vastly outnumbered, and out spent, by their western and Asian counterparts.

That’s a possible analysis. The real question is if he thinks he can grab a cookie from the jar while his patrons - both GOP & oligarch aren’t looking. That’s where things like the British plane loads of weapons and the movement of Swedish army troops to Gotland are important. He really can’t afford a mess like the Chechnya where they almost succeeded in stopping the Russian army (and blowing lots of tanks in the process) without anywhere near the capability of Ukraine’s military much less a modern western army.

Speaking of cruises, for some reason I was looking up Gavin MacLeod and this article came up. I had forgotten how bad 2021 was for the similarly aged starts of MTM show:

Betty White was fourth star of ‘Mary Tyler Moore Show’ to die in 2021

The cast members who died in 2021 were ages 90, 91, 94, and 99. Long lived comedien actors.

The unfortunate endgame is when even Putin cannot hide all the body bags coming home with Russian flags on them (or incognito, par for the course) and ordinary Russian finally discover they have been had all this time and do something about it.

And it’s not worth trying.

Ukraine gave up its nukes after the dissolution of the Soviet Union with the understanding that its territorial integrity would be respected. Russia and the US singed onto the agreement. There was no enforcement mechanism and no obligation for the US or NATO to protect Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression, but it’s still a shitty situation.
Appeasing power hungry assholes rarely works out for the benefit of the world. What makes you think that Putin will stop with the Ukraine.
The other thing is that Russia, for all the bluster, is relatively weak. They don’t want a shooting war with NATO.

“In recent days, the state attorneys general in Michigan and New Mexico have asked the Justice Department to investigate fake slates of electors that falsely claimed that Mr. Trump, not Joe Biden, had won their states.”

At this point I think the thing that needs to be shouted about is that…it isn’t hypocrisy because they believe in hierarchy more than they believe any value is universal. They have rejected the core assumption of the Enlightenment in favor of caste.

They’re axiomatically the superior kind, and thus cannot be constrained, even by their own beliefs.

Indeed, the modern conservative is defined by the mutilation of their own immovable anchors. They have invented a new hermeneutic, a new history, a new epistemology, etc, etc, rather than be constrained by the principles they point to as their sources of moral authority.

Political conservatism is the view that society should have a ruling class with legal rights but no legal obligations, and a non-ruling class with legal obligations but no legal rights.

The Confederate States of America remains one of the most perfect realizations of this atrocity in history, and Republicans are doing what they can to return to it.

I lost Abby almost 5 yrs ago and I smile and then cry, or sometimes the other way around. My son has an artist friend who took a photo he had of her in his phone, she painted a watercolor pic of her for me as a gift the Christmas after she passed. The artist incorporates the pet’s name into every painting she does. I have a little memorial to Abby in our bedroom, this painting is part of it.

If my assertion is correct, that we’re witnessing a worldview collapse across a significant swath of our society, then the angst arising out of the existential crises being shared in their in-groups is causing a lot of searching for anything which is an “out”.

We’re going through the same malaise as Britain—the mythology of the rightness and wholesomeness of empire can’t be sustained anymore, while the tactics of empire have been turned inwards because the hegemons that built the nationalist mythology—we’ll all work hard and get a share—were never going to diminish their cut.

Basically, Americans are experiencing the things we used to do to other countries to create the disadvantageous, when not outright exploitative, labor and resource-extraction agreements that made the nation rich. It’s Foucault’s Boomerang—the tactics that worked in other nations can and have been adapted for domestic targets.

The leopards are supposed to eat other people’s faces.

But America’s key cultural base assumptions—individualism, meritocracy, and capitalism as a moral force—don’t allow for the kind of critical scrutiny that acknowledges that there’s been a long process of stripping away capital and franchise from regular Americans for the benefit of a tiny elite that are beyond national concerns. For many Americans, their suffering cannot be an understandable consequence of the system that previously uplifted them applying the same tactics at home, it can only be the product of some kind of stone from the sky…treachery, conspiracy, the clandestine works of strangers and perverts.

We are shot full of conspiracy theories because they simplify and externalize problems that are complex and endemic: a vaudeville villain is more comforting than the idea that society itself was always kind of indifferent to your suffering. We’re playing with fascism because fascism is a convenient way to conceal a crime: the people in charge can either admit they were always fucking up and self-dealing, or they can designate a target that made everything bad.

WASHINGTON (TND) — At a news conference marking the end of his first year in office, President Joe Biden challenged his Republican critics to “get in the game of making things better in this country,” and he accused them of failing to present voters with a substantive agenda as they seek their support in the midterms.

“I did not anticipate that there’d be such a stalwart effort to make sure that the most important thing was that President Biden didn’t get anything done,” Biden said Wednesday. “Think about this: What are Republicans for? What are they for? Name me one thing they’re for.”

Pressed to answer that question, many Republicans have remained vague about their plans if they retake control of Congress in November. They provide a long list of crises they believe the Biden administration has caused or has failed to address, but they have not offered many concrete solutions of their own.

“I think we have to give people a snapshot of what we’re going to do,” Rep. Darin LaHood, R-Ill., said in an interview Wednesday.

LaHood expects House Republicans will roll out their plan this spring to deal with border security, inflation, education, foreign policy, and other issues. Beyond criticizing Biden’s approach as divisive, he did not present any specifics.

Others have not been much more forthcoming. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., who would likely become majority leader if Republicans gain seats in the evenly split chamber, was evasive Wednesday when asked what policies he would prioritize.

“That is a very good question, and I’ll let you know when we take it back,” McConnell told reporters.

Yeah…that’s caste.

I started reading Fred Clark (Slacktivist blog) about eighteen years ago, and one the key things he articulated was something I’d already noticed but not processed: conservatives simply do not believe that most de jure Americans are de facto Americans; as such, most of the people in this country simply do not deserve civil liberties or franchise. Which is pretty much an older Foucault’s Boomerang: this premise has been tested out on various minorities, across very different circumstances (first natives, then slaves, then undesirable immigrant types). There was never anything concrete stopping this rhetorical mode from being used against the in-group, it’s just that in the past the people with the most capital needed a steady local labor pool and a goon squad.

(Labor is now trans-national and goon squad culture has been refined into cop culture: the old expansive definition of whiteness can therefore be discarded in favor of a narrower set)

The British did the same thing: under Thatcher the newly on-the-dole workers in the North were spoke of with the same contempt and rhetorical jabs that were previously used on brown imperial subjects.

Big oil is what ties people like Charles Koch and Mercer to Putin, someone who would otherwise be the equivalent of a Martian to them. Their objective is not to prevent war per se, but to prevent US intervention against Russian expansion. That is why their very public face, people like Tucker Carlson and Madison Cawthorn, are repeating Russian propaganda practically verbatem. I do not know who these neo-cons and old right types are who are urging intervention on behalf of the military industrial complex, but I do know which side the Republican Party in general favors and it is not NATO’s and Biden’s. It’s worth noting that Russia also has a military industrial complex, it is quite profitable, and a successful operation in Ukraine would be a tremendous boost.

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan Republicans have sued to block the state’s new congressional map, saying it’s constitutionally flawed because of population deviations, too much splitting of municipal lines and the carving up of “communities of interest.”

The lawsuit was filed Thursday in federal court. It alleges that a commission that drew the map arbitrarily and inconsistently applied redistricting criteria in the state constitution.

It contends counties are “Michigan’s true communities of interest” and proposes a new map that would leave more counties intact and increase compactness.

It’s the second lawsuit challenging the U.S. House map. The first was brought by Black officials in the Detroit area.

WaPo:
A Texas man was arrested Friday and charged with threatening election and other government officials in Georgia, in the first case brought by a Justice Department task force formed to combat such threats, authorities said.

In an indictment, federal prosecutors alleged that Chad Christopher Stark, 54, posted a message on Craigslist on Jan. 5, 2021, saying it was “time to kill” an official, whose name is not included in the court documents.

“Georgia Patriots it’s time for us to take back our state from these Lawless treasonous traitors. It’s time to invoke our Second Amendment right it’s time to put a bullet in the treasonous Chinese [Official A]. Then we work our way down to [Official B] the local and federal corrupt judges,” Stark wrote, according to the indictment.

Georgia officials, in particular, were targeted by hostile messages after they refused to back President Donald Trump’s bogus claims of election fraud. Trump called Georgia’s Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger (R) the “enemy of the people” after the election went against him, and he urged Raffensperger in a phone call to “find” enough votes to overturn his defeat.

He’s hopefully on his way to being a less-funny Dennis Miller. At least in Miller’s defense, it took 9/11 to make him into an asshole. Maher? It only took a mask and a shot to bring out the asshole.

*trying to* but there are a lot of of people out there who are enraging me these days.

“Christianity Today,” the house organ of the Evangelical Industrial Complex, ran an article by a woman who teaches at a Southern Baptist seminary about how horrible it was to use “they” to refer to God, as opposed to the proper and righteous “he.” I let this “theologian” know how I felt.

Or the stupid woman who tried to go on about the riots “last summer” when I got onto a an anti-abortion “thought leader.”

So many stupid people out there. I wish Japan would open up so I could go somewhere that I didn’t have to see this nonsense.

Just for perspective, my niece and her wife have been working as instructors in Japan for years. They plan to come to the US soon; they’re just waiting on the visa for my niece’s wife (she’s Scottish).

They’ve had to hide their relationship for years to avoid getting fired. Lots of prejudices in Japan.

As an aside, my niece had been shipping stuff to her mom’s in preparation for her return. It was all lost when my sister’s house burned down during the area fire in Colorado. Sigh.

My mom was a widow who could not afford to join the white flight to the suburbs when our neighborhood became integrated. I grew up playing with Black and Mexican kids and will not put with racist talk from anyone who grew up in an all-white neighborhood.

The Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drugs Company (MCCPDC) is a registered pharmaceutical wholesaler and purchases drugs directly from manufacturers, bypassing middlemen to lower the price of more than 100 medications, it said in a statement.

For example, the leukemia drug imatinib is priced at $47 a month on MCCPDC compared to the $9,657 retail price.

One of the local Twitterati here started a Wordle tournament with about 80 people competing. I’m part of a big pileup of “tied for fifth” after 3 days. But at least my teenage daughter, who was owning me at the start of Wordle, is only tying me now…

Wordle 217 3/6

tell your daughter how impressed you are with her ability to handle 5 letter words. then tell her you aren’t being sarcastic. she won’t know whether you’re being patronizing or sincere. that just kills teenagers.

They want the wild west.

MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) — Republicans in the state Assembly passed a series of bills to expand gun laws in the badger state, including a proposal to allow some high school students and parents to have firearms on school property.

During the Assembly’s return to the floor since the new year, Republicans passed legislation that would lower the concealed carry age from 21 to 18, allow legal gun owners to have their weapon in their vehicle when dropping off or picking up their child from school, and allow anyone with a concealed carry license from any state to be armed in Wisconsin.

With gun violence on the rise in Wisconsin and across the nation, Republicans believe more residents should be able to carry a gun legally to protect themselves.

State Rep. Shae Sortwell (R-Two Rivers), author of the bill to lower the concealed carry age, contends if 18-year-olds can vote, they should be allowed to arm themselves.

“They are mature enough, they are adult enough to make these decisions and yet we are going to deny them the basic human right of self-defense?” Sortwell said.

This was mentioned the other day but here’s a nice article on it.

One of Boston’s most popular tourist attractions is under a new command.

The USS Constitution, also known as Old Ironsides for the fabled way cannonballs used to bounce off its sides, is the Navy’s oldest commissioned ship still in operation today. For 224 years, the Constitution was commanded by men. That changes on Friday.

Cmdr. Billie J. Farrell takes command of Old Ironsides and its 80 crew members. She’s 39 years old, originally from Kentucky, and has been a commissioned Navy officer for nearly 18 years.

ACNA was a split caused by the fact that the regular Episcopalians had too many liberal cooties: too many women priests, didn’t persecute gays and actually punished abusers we caught. Plus a few too many priests like mine who actually took the bible seriously. It became a new home for the racists, homophobes & abusers that didn’t want to deal with us.

Calling it “bananas” at this point is essentially treating it as a joke. That Trump, advisors, etc. were not seriously considering trying to overthrow the government due to losing an election. They were serious. They are still serious about it. And the GOP itself in various states is doing all the groundwork to make it easier to do the next time they try.

Continued tensions between Ukraine and Russia have led to the U.S. providing 90 tons of military aid that arrived in Ukraine, as roughly 100,000 Russian troops remain stationed along the border.

The shipment is part of the additional $200 million of “lethal aid” approved by President Biden in late December and includes ammunition for Ukraine’s frontline defenders, the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv tweeted.

“The United States and its allies and partners are standing together to expedite security assistance to Ukraine,” Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a tweet on Friday. “We are utilizing all available security cooperation tools to help Ukraine bolster its defenses in the face of Russian aggression.”

I have some Carhartt threads. They hold up well to farm/ranch stuff, which is saying a lot: Thorns, barbed wire, jagged rocks, mud, ornery critters, etc.

I bought it often when I was a OTR truck driver. As you say, it held up. A good coat, a nice watch cap, etc.

After a short 3 years since Bunny was a kitten I had forgotten how much a PITA a kitten could be sometimes. This morning the wife discovered another potted plant from the window sill on the floor (this makes the 3rd). And for some reason the little one has decided to not use the many scratching posts that are around the house and instead used my down vest. So there are feathers floating here and there in my office.

Carter helps get rid of Guinea worms.
TFG spreads brain worms.
We asked these tapeworms in an Iowa diner if they thought there was much difference in presidential worm-handling.

On the anti-vaxx demonstrations in DC tomorrow:

Kolina Koltai, a postdoctoral fellow who researches the anti-vaccine movement at the University of Washington’s Center for an Informed Public, said the D.C. event was bringing together some of the most high-profile anti-vaccine activists.

“It’s a who’s who of grifters and people who made a profit off the pandemic,” she said

Ah yes . The Anglican Church of North America, which pledges its fealty to the archbishop of Uganda. Good luck, fellas! Oh, and you’ll need to vacate the church. Those belong to the episcopal diocese.

I think Jimmy Carter once said that his life’s goal was live long enough to see the number of Guinea Worm cases go to zero and stay there.
He may not get his wish to the letter, but that chart is hella impressive.

Guinea Worm Disease is nasty af: its near-eradication ought to be celebrated worldwide.

Lethal aid. If Putin wants to invade, it’s gonna hurt.

I would hate it for the actual lives lost, but there would be some entertainment in having the Ukrainian army pull a Chosin reservoir envelopment on a Russian division when it’s 10 degrees below zero in the Ukrainian countryside. Can you imagine what would happen to Putin if 30,000 personnel were killed or captured by an army I would bet the Russian army feels is second class?

What would happen? The same thing that happened to relatives of the doomed submariners aboard the Kursk. One of them was publicly tranquilized for daring to complain.

The Russian people would likely never find out the truth. And if, somehow, they did - and rose up to vent their anger - then you’d end up with something looking like the Odessa Steps scene from Battleship Potemkin.

IOW….a massacre.

When I learned French, one of my favorite book series was about a tomboy girl and her eight animal friends (a French Pippi Longstocking). One story had her and her friends driving their 1923 Citröen in a road rally. During the race, they run into a potato farmer.

At the end of the race, the little girl and her friends make bank, and plenty of sous, selling frites. 🙃

I haven’t gone to Disney+ since the first season of the Mandalorian (which I subscribed to watch - didn’t watch season 2). I don’t recognize half of the super-hero movies available.

But watching this documentary I now understand why so many ancient artifacts in museums are broken into fragments. These Eternals are all about the smash.
