If perfection, or near-perfection, is the standard, then a politician can limit themselves to speeches, prepared remarks, press releases, and other forms of expression that are put together in advance and carefully edited and vetted. And if that is what is required to avoid “Can you believe [X] said [Y]?” stories, because the press has to turn every molehill of a gaffe into a mountain, then they really ought not complain about the lack of press conferences.

Part of why I like the video is that it gets full into the fact that the people inside the NFT sphere don’t really care what they own, just that their ownership means that they profit when the thing goes up in price because it’s perceived as appreciating. In my parents’ day (yeah, yeah, I’m a geezer) community college in every city in all 50 states was 100% taxpayer-funded, zero tuition. (most of the students still lived with their parents). State Universities were 80% taxpayer-funded, tuition was approximately equal to what you could earn at a 3 month minimum-wage summer job.
Mom and Dad both had summer jobs, and dad had his GI bennies, but that all went to grad school. When he got his MD, he had 0 debt.
Of course, voters were okay with this back then, because in 40 states the colleges were explicitly, by law, whites only.
When the parties were both in agreement that blacks, hispanics and asians weren’t real people and shouldn’t have all the rights of all the other citizens, it made it a lot easier for the parties to find reasonable compromise on almost everything else.

Growing up in a military family, I was lucky to be raised in a desegregated environment.
When my kids were little, we made a point of finding a town and neighborhood that was desegregated so that my kids could have the same opportunity. And I’m pleased to say we succeeded in helping them avoid the prejudices that plague so much of the country.

We took a huge hit moving from Lexington, KY to New England, but that’s where I could find permanent employment. We went into pretty steep credit card debt because all the things we had been putting off—dental care, a reliable car, etc.—came due at the same time. A couple of years ago a promotion put us on a more stable level, but we still can’t afford to buy a house here, esp., in the last couple of years when already astronomical prices went up by 30%. The price of a townhouse we’re renting would by you a nice home with a large yard in Lexington (and compared to much of the rest of Kentucky, Lexington is pretty pricey). But I’m grateful to have a consistent job—I know the agony of what you’re going through quite well.

Vanguard America’s ‘bloodandsoil.org’ domain was reconfigured to support Patriot Front’s main internal communications system: a self-hosted instance of RocketChat, an open-source chat server software similar to Slack and Discord; messaging platforms with multiple channels.
Information security in this centralized communications project failed almost entirely. Sources provided Unicorn Riot with screenshots, audio recordings of meetings (self-hosted on another system called Mumble), extracted texts of group chats and even the private direct message system. Chat messages contained dozens of links to unlocked, public mega.nz cloud storage directories, which hosted more than 400 gigabytes of raw videos and photos of Patriot Front events, gatherings, scouting for vandalizing Black monuments, and much more. Most of the materials come from the latter half of 2021, including a rally in Washington, D.C.

Ukraine gave up its nukes after the dissolution of the Soviet Union with the understanding that its territorial integrity would be respected. Russia and the US singed onto the agreement. There was no enforcement mechanism and no obligation for the US or NATO to protect Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression, but it’s still a shitty situation.
Appeasing power hungry assholes rarely works out for the benefit of the world. What makes you think that Putin will stop with the Ukraine.

My son has an artist friend who took a photo he had of her in his phone, she painted a watercolor pic of her for me as a gift the Christmas after she passed. The artist incorporates the pet’s name into every painting she does. I have a little memorial to Abby in our bedroom, this painting is part of it.

For many Americans, their suffering cannot be an understandable consequence of the system that previously uplifted them applying the same tactics at home, it can only be the product of some kind of stone from the sky…treachery, conspiracy, the clandestine works of strangers and perverts.
We are shot full of conspiracy theories because they simplify and externalize problems that are complex and endemic: a vaudeville villain is more comforting than the idea that society itself was always kind of indifferent to your suffering. We’re playing with fascism because fascism is a convenient way to conceal a crime: the people in charge can either admit they were always fucking up and self-dealing, or they can designate a target that made everything bad.

I started reading Fred Clark (Slacktivist blog) about eighteen years ago, and one the key things he articulated was something I’d already noticed but not processed: conservatives simply do not believe that most de jure Americans are de facto Americans; as such, most of the people in this country simply do not deserve civil liberties or franchise. Which is pretty much an older Foucault’s Boomerang: this premise has been tested out on various minorities, across very different circumstances (first natives, then slaves, then undesirable immigrant types). There was never anything concrete stopping this rhetorical mode from being used against the in-group, it’s just that in the past the people with the most capital needed a steady local labor pool and a goon squad.
(Labor is now trans-national and goon squad culture has been refined into cop culture: the old expansive definition of whiteness can therefore be discarded in favor of a narrower set)

Just for perspective, my niece and her wife have been working as instructors in Japan for years. They plan to come to the US soon; they’re just waiting on the visa for my niece’s wife (she’s Scottish).
They’ve had to hide their relationship for years to avoid getting fired. Lots of prejudices in Japan.
As an aside, my niece had been shipping stuff to her mom’s in preparation for her return. It was all lost when my sister’s house burned down during the area fire in Colorado. Sigh.

My niece and her 3 children all tested positive, had mild symptoms, and recovered in a couple days. Meanwhile her husband felt miserable for at least a week but has repeatedly tested negative, both using home tests and then going to an official test facility. It does seem odd that his illness would not be caused by COVID.

I’m dumb, my first and second word guesses started with the same letters.
I’d like to think that good, considerate coworkers would have followed the evolving forecast for the snowstorm and taken steps to make sure that all the stuff that guests would come asking for in the late hours would be stocked up so that I wouldn’t have to walk through ankle-deep snow and freezing wind to raid the housekeeping closet in B-Building.
I like to think that mostly because the assholes who I relieved this evening left everything empty, left me with work to do that should have been done on their shift, sat on their asses staring at their cellphones all night, and peaced out early because I was gracious enough to start my shift early in order to allow them to beat the worst of the storm.
I rode 30 miles today. I’ve turned the power level of the motor way down and have been riding in pedal assist 1. It is like riding a 1960s steel Schwinn 10 speed bicycle up hills. That has put a lot more load on my knees and muscles but, I’ve extended my range per battery charge to over 60 miles. Motrin is now part of my riding regimen. I’ve reached 1800 miles on the bike.

Growing up in a military family, I was lucky to be raised in a desegregated environment.
When my kids were little, we made a point of finding a town and neighborhood that was desegregated so that my kids could have the same opportunity. And I’m pleased to say we succeeded in helping them avoid the prejudices that plague so much of the country.
Funny how selling fear of others fails when experience makes the lies obvious.
My mom was a widow who could not afford to join the white flight to the suburbs when our neighborhood became integrated. I grew up playing with Black and Mexican kids and will not put with racist talk from anyone who grew up in an all-white neighborhood.

I haven’t gone to Disney+ since the first season of the Mandalorian (which I subscribed to watch - didn’t watch season 2). I don’t recognize half of the super-hero movies available.
But watching this documentary I now understand why so many ancient artifacts in museums are broken into fragments. These Eternals are all about the smash.
