New From Elvis Costello & the Imposters: “Magnificent Hurt”

Music • Views: 19,061

YouTube

One of our host’s favorite bands, Elvis Costello & The Imposters, take over the Late Show stage for a performance of the first single from their new album, “The Boy Named If.” #Colbert #MagnificentHurt #ElvisCostello

After talking in tongues I began to preach
What falls from the branch is an apple or peach
Hold on to me there’s a red alert
It’s the way you make me feel, magnificent hurt

I took a little walk, I took another stimulant
I shed a single tear for my predicament
Don’t act surprised or insolent
It’s the way you make me feel, magnificent hurt

When we first met, I knew you were beautiful
You fit like the seat of a blue mohair suit
And the pain that I felt let me know I’m alive
And I opened my heart
To the way you make me feel, magnificent hurt

I speak low and intimate
Like a cardboard sophisticate
What if this is true love?
Not some town hall certificate
It’s the way you make me feel, magnificent hurt

I stood at the door, and I almost went through with it
Tight as the angle of my amen
And I swore there and then as I feign and I flirt
I unbuttoned my shirt
To the way you make me feel, magnificent hurt
To the way you make me feel, magnificent hurt

It’s the way you make me feel
It’s the way you make me feel, magnificent

Beautiful sunny day here… but I’m cold. Sure, the temps are rising (about 66F here) but the humidity is crashing.

66F may sound comfortable, but when the dew point is 0F it feels damn cold to me.

It’s about to snow again here. On Tuesday, the low is supposed to be -20 °F (-28.9 C).

And now, after I told Jesse she might have to be extra attentive to me today and to keep her under-weather papa warm, she hasn’t left my side, except for breakfast, secfast, brunch, lunch, and mostly recently munch.

Well I managed to piss my brother off because he was going on about how “Democrat DAs” were being funded by George Soros. I just lit into him and pointed out that he was watching too much Fox News and that the attacks against Soros were based in anti-semitism. So he stomped out of the house and is off driving around.

Case study #179 on why clearly defining your terms in a study matters. Village hot sauce, out Grand Forks ND, could maybe charitably be described as a mild salsa. It’s definitely not a hot sauce in generally accepted terms and the only reason hot sauce is in the name is that the producers really know their ND customers. It sells in large bottles instead of those little bottles where a couple of drops will do you real hot sauce. The daring wild ND people serve it with tortilla chips. I’m certain three NDSU football watch parties was enough to push it to number one in ND.

Me: “Meat Loaf’s vax status was technically ‘unknown’, but he was a rabid conservative who openly complained about vax mandates and died of COVID, so he most likely wasn’t vaccinated.”

My sister, the teacher: “Well, you don’t know that for sure. He could have been vaccinated but we’ll probably never know.”

Right, because if there’s one thing the news is full of, it’s stories of Republicans who openly rejected COVID vaccines, yet were secretly vaccinated and still died from COVID.

Actually, if they were vaccinated and still died, this would be important information to have, along with any comorbidities that they may have had.

I’ll agree on Frank’s RedHot. Not blazing hot, just a nice spicy taste.

l was lead engineer for quite a few large development teams in the telecom industry. Once had a senior manager praise me for having such diverse teams on the projects.

And while it was true that the teams were very diverse, that wasn’t intentional.

I simply picked the best engineers I could find for each role. They were folks who impressed me (not an easy task). And was never disappointed with the results.

So I can’t understand or cope with the kind of bigotry this doctor experienced.

The thing that chaps my ass is that people like my sister giving someone like Meat Loaf the benefit of the doubt because he never officially came out and said “I have not and will not take a COVID vaccine.”

‘Cause then it spirals into the whole hyper skeptical “Well, you can’t prove he wasn’t vaccinated, therefore it’s possible he was vaccinated and still died from it” bullshit argument.

No, technically I can’t prove he wasn’t vaccinated. But for fuck’s sake, I can point you to interview after interview where he was adamant against any sort of vax mandate, yet there’s zero statement of him admitting to getting even a single shot.

But, nooooooo, it’s somehow logically wrong to state he most likely wasn’t vaxxed despite tons of evidence pointing in that direction.

If it’s true that they are at will employees, there’s absolutely no basis for the TRO that the judge ordered.

If there’s some sort of non-compete agreement at issue, then there may be something there. However, I think non-compete clauses should be unlawful and unenforceable as a matter of law, full stop.

The TRO is against the new employer, enjoining them from starting the new employees; it is an unfair trade practices suit. The old employer is claiming the new employer poached their employees. The judge is seriously off base here in his decision; the employees were not poached, unless you want to count it that once one employee jumped ship, and others saw the benefits package that was offered, they followed suit. I agree wholeheartedly with your closing statement about how non-competes should be unlawful. I sign them all the time, but they’re effectively meaningless in my industry, as they are always waived unless the employer is wanting to be a dick.

Top story for the day should be the 10 airplanes that crashed yesterday, each with 290 people on board.

Did I say airplanes? I meant covid deaths, where people died gasping for their last breath at hospitals all across the country because +90% of those who died were not vaccinated.

2900+ died on Friday from covid. That’s fucking nuts. And yet the media is glossing over all of this because it doesn’t fit the narrative. They want people to think omicron is mild.

It might be milder than delta, but omicron can kill people who aren’t vaccinated just as surely as other variants.

This pandemic is a culling of the right wing lunatics who think they’re dying to pwn the libs. I remain out of fucks to give. My supply chain has indicated no ETA on restoration of fucks to have. Therefore, I’ll be rationing my fucks to give to those who actually deserve it.

Well, to be honest, 2900 deaths were reported on Friday. Florida saves them up during the week. It skews the numbers.

But the bitch is a valid bitch. We are coming to the end of the Delta fatalities and from here on out, it will be Omicron fatalities and almost all of those will be laissez-faire suicides by the unvaccinated. Stupid, preventable suicides that take up hospital assets, that result in the spread to toddlers, immuno-compromised folks, and fuckwits who make up 20% of the population and will almost guarantee that there will be another flavor of COVID that will hammer us in April or May.

Deaths are trending up, and that’s because deaths lag the hospitalizations in each of the waves.

All those hospitalizations decrease resources available to everyone else, so don’t get in a car crash or have a fall or get a stroke or heart attack, because your local hospital might not have an ICU slot available for you. Hospitals around the country are cancelling electives because they have no resources available (rooms or personnel).

I’d also point out that delta hasn’t gone away either. It’s still out there. Omicron is just more effective as a spreader.

Looks like the Pennsylvania State Police did not monkey around.

On Saturday night, two Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) troopers, Andrea Pelachick and Lauren Lesher, tweeted “All monkeys have been accounted for.”

One monkey had been unaccounted for Saturday morning, according to a tweet from the Pennsylvania State Police Troop F.

Temperatures were below freezing on Friday night.

My kid is going to see Bruce Dickinson tomorrow night. It’s just Bruce and a couple of guitars, lots of photographs and stories about life on tour and making music. He’s going to try and meet Bruce, the venue is not huge, so he’s got a shot at it.

So I’ve been thinking about something. Brace yourselves, lol. Or run.

I keep coming back to how mean humans are being to one another and how that breaks so many things. And keeps them broken. This is coming from humans and our choices as a whole over a rather short(relative to history) time frame. Humans have to fix this. Somehow. What we’re doing now is not sustainable. Not even close.

There do have to be consequences for shit behavior, it helps keep bad behavior from becoming normalized. But there also has to be an eye towards preventing more mean people from being created. And most of this is learned, passed down and often accepted. I am not so naive to think this is something that can be forced or legislated entirely or even mostly, but there have to be lines and limits that aren’t tolerated. Like threatening to shoot up a school because you’re a fucked up asshole who thinks wearing a mask is worth death threats. This shit HAS to be minimized somehow so it becomes something without rewards.

How we even begin with this is totally above my pay grade, but something has to give and it’s only one of many things that need readjusted.

Yes, like you, I have been thinking about some of the issues that we have been seeing recently.

From what I have been seeing.

1. If institutions can’t protect themselves, they are going to be destroyed. That includes the US Government. (I’m looking at you DOJ and Congress in particular.)

2. The group of people who believe that they can make money by stripping the institutions and selling them for parts. It used to be called plundering. Now the libertarian dude-bro’s and their vulture capitalist friends call it ‘disruption’.

3. The layer of authoritarians and their billionaire patrons who want to weaken institutions so that they can more easily seize power and money.

4. Plus those who do not view laws as benefiting them and want to destroy them. Among these are those who just want to see the world burn.

5. Plus foreign entities who want to weaken the United States by damaging our institutions.

6. The passing away of the last generation who remember what happened the last time laws and institutions failed back in the 1920’s and 1930’s.

7. A Republican Leadership that has institutionalized and now reflects the sociopathy of its leader.

8. On top of that is the pandemic and its disruptions.

9. With all of this a certain percentage of people are just not going to react well. Unfortunately, sometimes the people exhibiting this behavior are indistinguishable from deliberately malevolent actors mentioned above.

What do we do about it?

Folks here have mentioned a few things:
- Protect yourself;
- Act with compassion;
- Remember your ethics and professionalism;
- Choose a valuable institution to support;
- Be as courageous as you can.

Timothy Snyder has a few ideas in his series on youtube

I didn’t have the motherboard setting turned on. So I’m waiting until it recognizes the change. I dont think you have to be part of the insider program unless you’re trying to hurry up this process. I’m not on it on my laptop, and I didn’t have any trouble. My desktop is a few years old.

Also, r/antiwork started up a GoFundMe for the seven so they could go ahead and quit working at Thedacare even if they weren’t able to go straight to Ascension.

There is a hearing on Monday at 10 am. I expect it’s going to be ugly. People are *pissed off*.

I’ve just always been shit at running. In high school one swim season our regular Friday workout was a run swim - 1000 yard swim, maybe a 3 mile run, 1000 yard swim. I’d be one of the first out of the water, get passed by everyone, including freshmen, because I’d basically walk the three miles, and then still end up catching and passing about half the guys on the second swim.

Biking is fun, especially since I live by the beach. It’s just a time thing, I think, especially in these winter months

Ummmm

A video of a reporter in West Virginia being hit by a car while doing a live report has gone viral on social media, with many talking about the depths reporters go to get the news out. In the video, the journalist, identified as Tori Yorgey, immediately pulls herself up and continues speaking on camera—despite having just been hit by a car.

“Oh my God. I just got by a car, but I’m okay!” Yorgey says as she falls to the ground. After she gets up, she laughingly says, “You know, that’s live TV for ya! It’s all good! I actually got hit by a car in college, too, just like that. I am so glad I’m okay!”

OK, just remembered my attempt at riding up Mt. Diablo on my 10 speed in high school. Pedaling as fast as I can and moving up the hill at barely 3 MPH sucked more than running.

Major personal rant over The Medical System below the button:

Sorry to have to use this valuable Internet space to vent personal frustrations: but 2022 has started off extraordinarily fucked chez Jay. The problem is with my wife : Mrs. Jay is a chronic-pain patient (Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome: inherited, untreatable and VERY painful), and last month, she suddenly had her supply of prescription painkillers cut off: our GP, who had been prescribing them, abruptly decided not to (citing “regulations”) - and her pain-management specialist proved even less useful: barred by corporate policy (he is part of a HUGE med complex in the City), from being “licensed” to prescribe “controlled” medications (or medical MJ for that matter); and could only suggest one particular drug - that we had already cited to him as being useless): though in a stepped-up-from-zero dosage. Makes no sense, but our complaints were, basically, met with shrugs. As has been most efforts to get her the Rx she needs, as, apparently, the State of NY has gone on another “anti-abuse” campaign enforcing regulations on serious-medication prescriptions: which, of course, negatively impacts legitimate users (like my wife) - while, I am sure, doing little or nothing to combat the major abuses, and still less to deter the abusers. So we are back to Square One in trying to deal with a situation of intractable, intense pain with no pharmaceutical relief. Good times…..

Actually, we have gotten a more-or-less sympathetic response from our State Senator (Liz Krueger): I figured that would be a better place to start, since the problems seem originate on the State level. Though sympathy and $2.75 will get you a subway ride: these sort of “enforcement” crusades come and go, and are typically pitched as a law-enforcement issue: so very little is likely to get done without major pressure from “The Public”. Which unfortunately, for pain patients, is a pretty small demographic…..

NBC just finished a story about a paraolympian (?sp). She an American, adopted from Ukraine when she was seven. She suffered radiation poisoning, which ended up costing her her legs from the knees down, and the use of most of her hands. She’s competed in the summer Olympics, and is doing winter for the first time. The radiation made her hands pretty gnarly, and she can’t grip because she has no use of her thumbs. They tape her sticks to her hands.

The big difference between the 30’s and now is that, unlike Germany, Russia is not an economic powerhouse nor a real military powerhouse, outside of its nuclear arsenal. It is not a potential conventional war that is the source of true concern; it is the terror that a conflict could escalate out of control and lead to a potential nuclear exchange. We also don’t know what type of damage Trump inflicted on our military capabilities because of his deference to Putin and what information he may have provided to the Russians. We do know that the GOP is a fifth column, waiting to impair any actions we might take to stop Putin’s invasion or attempts to overthrow the Ukraine government.

Was looking for docs for a lawyer friend of mine in NYC who wanted to know more about the Thedacare v. Ascension case (aka “those seven employees you hired, we have an injunction to keep them from being onboarded as employees”). Here’s a Tweet with the email Thedacare sent out to its staff.

[Embedded content]

Also, r/antiwork started up a GoFundMe for the seven so they could go ahead and quit working at Thedacare even if they weren’t able to go straight to Ascension.

There is a hearing on Monday at 10 am. I expect it’s going to be ugly. People are *pissed off*.

Realistically, this shit shouldn’t go past Monday. Thedacare’s CEO badly played his hand, between refusing to make counter-offers when his employees informed him about being hired by Ascension, trying to work over the hiring director at Ascension to give him “more time” instead of beginning to screen and hire replacements, and then waiting until the day before they were all supposed to begin the on-boarding process to file for an injunction. His whole legal strategy now amounts to begging the court to put the kibosh on the whole thing because his hospital’s stroke recovery department will lose Level II accreditation if he lacks staff to be open 24/7/365, while effectively accusing Ascension of maliciously poaching his staff in order to hurt his business.

That’s the issue that they (and a lot of people) don’t seem to really understand: Putin does not consider them sovereign states. Whether because he genuinely believes it or just acts like he does in order to keep the nationalists happy, his stated position is those nations belong to Russia and they takes their orders from the Kremlin. Remember that when he was still a KGB thug, the general policy for dealing with the leaders of those nations that refused Moscow’s will was not a bombastic speech on state media and vague threats of “consequences,” it often was being dragged in the night into a dark room to “apologize” for your offenses before suffering a sudden bout of “9mm flu.”

This is exactly right. Lavrov complained that the countries of Eastern Europe were “unowned” (beskhoznye), and Putin’s demands are basically for the US to hand back Ukraine to Russia or Russia will go and take it.

People like to use the term “New Cold War” but I find it misleading: the Cold War was a global ideological conflict. Putin simply wants to re-establish the former Russian Empire by bringing all the former Soviet Republics back under Russia’s sphere of control.

The country with the most powerful fighting force in 1938? France.
The country with the most tanks of any type in-service in 1938? Soviet Union.
The country with the largest naval forces in 1938? United Kingdom.

The country with the most successful bullshit artist as its Minister of Propaganda? Nazi Germany.

So much of what we “know” about German military prowess is pre and early war bullshit, much of it generated by people who were looking for reasons to play up war with Germany as a mistake. The Germans lied about their prowess in order to give their demands greater weight, warhawks played about their strength to justify increased defense spending, while doves presented it as reason to acquiesce to Germany’s demands. Britain and France played up the might of “Blitzkrieg” to excuse their withdrawal from the continent and the routing of their forces in under a month respectively. And even the Soviets loved to portray Germany as an unstoppable juggernaut to handwave away all the damage that Stalin’s purges had done to the Red Army’s leadership.

What turned the tide on all of this? When Germany began losing in North Africa, largely to save Mussolini’s ass after his efforts to “rebuild” the Roman Empire had failed, thus putting their military in a position where they could not count upon superior numbers or control of the engagement to overwhelm enemy forces.

The “annexation” of Crimea was basically Putin’s Anschluss, between the invasion, occupation, and subsequent “vote” to rejoin Russia. What is going on now is Putin’s Munch, an effort to try to force the hand of NATO by threatening a destructive force over land that none of the participants really care about in order to force a negotiated “peace.”

Germany’s early successes were as much political as military. Hitler conquered Austria and Czechoslovakia without firing a shot. He signed a non-aggression pact with his biggest ideological foe, Russia, in order to invade Poland.

And in the West, he knew that the Allies would be divided. Belgium, desperate to remain neutral, refused any military alliance or cooperation with France and Germany and did not even allow allied forces into Belgium until the Germans invaded first.

They handed him the initiative and he used it. But both Poland and France were matters of only a few weeks. The strain did not begin to show until Germany got involved in campaigns that lasted longer.

Theirs was a military very much in the Roman manner: They did not live to conquer so much as conquer to live, every conquest feeding the machine and enabling the next campaign. They would draft able-bodied men either into the military or the paramilitary forces, enslave portions of the population to do manual labor, incorporate captured weapons into the line of battle, and plunder any resources to fuel the whole machine. Only when they encountered sustained resistance did the machine begin to hiccup and then eventually break down, as the initial head rush of constant victories first turned into uncertainty and then eventually into feelings of defeat.

They really busted their teeth out trying to cross the Rhine and occupy Germania and move the borders of the Empire east to the Elbe, which would have saved considerable resources.

And that is pretty much the point when they stopped expanding and started contracting.

Given the situation that existed on September 1, 1939, Nazi Germany could not win WWII. It lacked the capacity to successfully invade the UK. Its only hope to force them out of the war was unrestricted submarine warfare, which would inevitably bring the U.S. into the war just as it did in WWI. War with the Soviet Union was inevitable, as much due to Nazi ideology as anything. They were gambling that the Soviet Union would quickly collapse, and when that didn’t happen, the Nazis were doomed, because they didn’t have the resources, most critically oil, to defeat the Soviet Union, the British Empire and the United States combined. Finally, if the war had lasted a few months longer, the U.S. would’ve nuked them into oblivion.

Imagine Vietnam on steroids. That would’ve been an invasion of Japan.

Then imagine the USSR invading it from the north while we were fighting in the south.

That would’ve left us with North Korea on steroids.

truman had to figure that he was faced with no good choice and this was probably the least horrible.

japan would have been defeated without the bomb. it would have cost a lot in $ and in the lives of japanese, americans, chinese, russians. the overwhelming nature of this sort of gave the japanese a way to capitulate quickly and not dishonorably.

he also partly had to be thinking that using the bomb would make a ‘statement’, to the nuclear world that was just waking up. looks like it did.

Some people are righteously sure that dropping the bombs was a war crime, and some are absolutely sure it was the only way to end the war without invading Japan, causing millions of casualties. I don’t know what would’ve happened, so I’m not going to second guess Truman’s decision, which he viewed as his only realistic option.

The comments above about pain meds (opioids) in America has me a bit distressed as well.
Most of you know about my back fusion a couple of years back where they were lifesavers for me once I gave up the fight to NOT use them because of my fear of addiction. As an OCD alcky, that’s justified. But they got me thru that procedure without dependence and a small stockpile for emergencies. I think most of us tend to do this.

It’s been 3 years, my body’s aging as expected and not it looks like I may have ruptured a disc in my cervical region ( pain and numbness down my left arm into my hand). I’ve had to bite into that stockpile just to get some sleep. I’m without insurance as I’m just starting into Medicare, and we know how those wheels turn. I’ll get on Gail’s insurance next month to ride thru the administrative period.

Now I’m back to clinical doses of ibuprofen and 1 hydro at night.

It will be interesting and concerning to see what Doc Turner sez when I see him next month because I flat out told him I need these med available if and when I needed them. And he told me not to worry. Will see.
Fucking Sackler family screws America in more ways than the obvious.

So a probable lover of unfettered capitalism fucked around and is finding out.

I presume that when or if someone digs deeper there will be discovery that they treated employees as just another asset and not as a set of professionals who are very much key to your business. That they run to the courts to prevent consequences just continues to show the hypocrisy in which they treat the employer/employee relationship.

I think this line of thought about Alzheimers and Parkinson has been going on for a number of years. Covid is just accelerating studying that type of impact to the body. It’s pretty clearly established that chronic fatigue syndrome/fibromyalgia can be triggered by a viral infection. There are a number of diseases that impact the autonomic nervous system and, once there’s ANS dysfunction, things start cascading. Heart failure, GERD, Alzheimers, Parkinsons, epilepsy, diabetes, and more all adversely impact the ANS. I do believe in years forward that ANS dysfunction diagnosis and management will play a key role in treatment and outcomes will improve.

ANS plays a role in regulating basic functions like heart rate, breathing, blood pressure, digestion. The ANS is typically thought of as having two roles - sympathetic (flight or fight response) and parasympathetic (rest and digest) - and a healthy ANS keeps those two in balance.

This time, we know the virus, and can see the effects. Medicine, until the late 20th century, was about figuring out the disease from the symptoms. Knowing the trigger in this case is going to give us clues about the structure of other viruses.

One aside on Rodgers. In the draft, everyone expected him to be the number one pick of SF. Instead, he fell to 24 and was picked up by the Packers. Where, to be honest, he’s had a damn good football career. But as one of his points of arrogance along with the whole Covid shit is that he likes to say how he’ll make SF sorry that they didn’t draft him.

He’s 0 - 4 against SF in the playoffs now… ;)

The difference between MTP and Face the Nation is especially stark today.

Tuck Choad’s Hour of Assholery was almost entirely horse-race stuff, gloom-and-dooming Democratic prospects for the midterms and pushing their latest bullshit poll numbers. (Hint, Chuck: “presidential approval rating” when you’re polling know-nothings is really just a measure of the overall national mood, and we live in shitty times, so.)

While Todd at least talked briefly about Ukraine, interviewing Antony Blinken, Face the Nation led off with 20+ minutes with Bennie Thompson, talking about 1/6 and about Ukraine with much more substance and depth, and now Marg Brennan is having as serious a conversation with Michael McFaul as it’s possible to have with any Republican.

One country, one politic, two completely different levels of seriousness in talking about it.

Yep, my wife is on pain management, she had back surgery, next is hip surgery, then knee surgery. Drug tests, getting refills in time, all sorts of troubles, and we’re not having near your troubles.

Yeah, my brother is now in a pain management practice and right now, things are OK-ish. But he was in SCREAMING pain at one point last summer, he went over to the Banner Baywood Medical Center ER (yeah, I’m naming names) and was reamed out by the doc there for wanting pain pills. He was treated like some sort of DRUG FIEND. Oh, and told to never come back. But he did get four Percocet to tide him over until his first cortisone shot. Ironically, as I was driving home from having been over there to watch mom while he was in the ER, I was sitting in the driveup line at McDonalds and came across some doctor on Twitter who was crowing about how she and her group had reduced the number of opioids being prescribed in the USA, and I LIT INTO HER. No, it was not a good time for me to come across some self-righteous woman on a crusade, not when I’d seen the result of same crusade only a few minutes previously.

Every single co-conspirator is counting on Trump or virtually any other Republican winning the White House in 2024 and quickly being issued full Pardons for everything and shielded from any other investigations. This is their legal strategy. It relies on the nation willfully giving up on being based on law and instead substituting rule by decree.

“conventional” bombing of Japanese cities probably killed and injured more people than the two atomic bombings.

Just the number of planes and crew.

I guess this discussion comes up whenever new war killing tech evolves.
Musket vs sword and lance, repeater vs musket, gatling gun, and on and on

Bombing is a little different because bombing is method of sliding over defenses to attack the infrastructure of war, which invariably means civilians dying, since logistics and manufacturing to keep a war going is largely civilian labor and material re-tooled for the effort. Even when doing “strategic bombing” you’re targeting population centers, and doing so with weapons that, by nature of how they’re deployed and under what conditions, will miss the strategic target.

Intentionality and accuracy are an important aspect of dictating what constitutes atrocity…or at least used to be, since developed countries have assembled an entire rhetoric to justify dropping explosives on people that can’t fight back by redefining what constitutes a legitimate target. The distinction between the V-1—which was a terror weapon precisely because it had no aiming, and a gravity bomb that could nominally be aimed by a sight but in the breach was often off-target because of prevailing conditions is…semantics.

“We trying, but there was collateral damage” just keeps being developed into more and more sophisticated versions, but bombs continue to function and be used as terror weapons, and also coincidentally their collateral damage has become normalized…the target, the overall strategy, requires random arbitrary civilian death is now an implicit part of the war-making of developed nations…mostly against targets in undeveloped nations. The rhetoric of drone killings is simply the purest distillation of this: this one guy has to die so the wedding party has to die (but also the wedding party is suspect because The War in Terror is built on the core premise of collective guilt).

…to say nothing of the colonial history of just doing terror bombing (or massed artillery versus cities, if you’re Russia) versus people who have no ability to counter…which is ongoing. Saudi Arabia right now is just throwing shit randomly at dense targets in Yemen, and always claiming that there’s a justification…enough Houthis that the dead children, or the dead prisoners, are worth the cost.

This all gets especially…fucked…if one goes back and looks at the intended effects of saturation bombing in WW2. Churchill’s egghead buddy who arrived at the idea of depleting Germany through bombing actually imagined that every bombing raid would generate morale-destroying fire storms, but did the density math wrong: every single urban strike was meant to cause a Dresden fire. Even a pretty hawkish guy like Freeman Dyson looked back on this a declared it ridiculous, war theater that delayed productive strategic moves guided by a dilletante who did the math wrong and then never got called on it.

The core argument for bombing is, once you cut away the fat, that it’s a utilitarian atrocity, distinct in it’s impersonalness from the more visceral atrocity of soldiers doing things in person: it will kill people that aren’t combatants, but ultimately that’s better because the it means both that your side doesn’t risk men and the other side suffers in ways that will shorten the war overall: these deaths upfront provide savings on annual butcher’s bills. But…that hasn’t really ever worked out. Saturation bombing has never terrorized a population so much they stopped functioning as a logistical basis for war-fighting; indeed, in many places they’ve doubled down, become radicalized because the war is no longer an abstraction, to the point that even after the victory insurgency is seen as necessary.

This was learnable in the reaction of German bombing of Great Britain, but somehow in subsequent wars….mostly against nonwhites…the tenacity and viciousness of bombing subjects in their resistance is viewed not as understandable, but as the product of some kind of inhuman fanaticism that requires enough harsher measures because the subjects are…orcs, basically.

This exists prior to aerial bombing, mind you. Yanks have many versions of the individualist fantasy of the hero dying fighting the oppressing hordes—the direct legacy of a thousand-year cross-stitched repetition of Leonidas and Horatius Cocles through European culture—could not understand or respect the choices of a Moro juramentado.

And yes, I’d said an very important part of talking about war doctrine is the undergirding distinction of “who is a full person” that emanates from existing cultural bias, not from the expediencies of strategy. Nazism didn’t do anything colonialist empires weren’t already doing, they just did it faster and to people lighter than a paper bag. Countries that decried WW2 concentrations camps then used concentrations camps in their late colonial wars, because the rule the Nazis broke wasn’t “don’t do this, ever” but “we don’t do this to our own kind.”

And that’s still with us: modern drone usage cannot be pried away from the War On Terror rhetoric of radicalization as a moral contagion within Islamic communities such that any Muslim has some culpability…a lethal version of the way “gang affiliated” is used to justify more severity and lethality in policing. Bashar al-Assad and MBS blow people apart with planes and then point and say “hey, those were Islamic radicals” and…they’re not being inconsistent with existing norms.

And all of which puts a rather interesting retroactive sheen on decisions made around Japan, because at no point did someone suggest that Japanese resilience could correlate to, say, doubling down in response to successful firestorms whipped up by bombing as opposed to an inherent racial-cultural trait that made then incapable of surrender. (again, remember the British narrative in which surviving the Blitz made them stronger was literally right there as a point of comparison) Nor was it considered that Japanese suicide rather than surrender could have been driven by, say…accurately assessing how the white colonial powers have consistently treated nonwhites.

Operation Meetinghouse, the first big fire-raising attack against Tokyo, on March 10 1945, probably killed more people (90,000-100,000) than either of the atomic bombings. There were many more such raids over the next few months, against a number of cities. The most conservative estimates are 400,000 deaths from these, with twice that many considered a credible possibility. Toward the end of the campaign, allied air superiority was such that XXI Bomber Command started publicly announcing targets in advance. Leaflets were dropped warning residents to flee.

The decision to use the atomic bombs was therefore not as momentous in context as it is usually portrayed to be. The decision had actually been made much earlier with the firestorms that destroyed Hamburg and Dresden and countless other places. It was already policy to burn cities to the ground. The A-bomb was just a hotter and more convenient match.
Truman would have to have decided NOT to use the bomb. The scientists who had developed the infernal apparatus (as MacArthur called it) had petitioned him to do just that. Their arguments were frankly unconvincing. They had loaded and cocked the gun, now they were in a panic to keep the trigger from being pulled.

Seems to me we have seen the near future of “strategic” war and IMHO it is ballistic conventional weapons. Cities are mutually assured hostages with either hundreds of conventional missiles or handfuls of nukes. Too fast and numerous to easily defend against, certainly accurate on fixed targets and now able to strike targets that move as fleets or ships. Cities may crumble but remain inhabitable/rebuildable. Nothing is safe on the sea surface.

re: #372 Rightwingconspirator

Seems to me we have seen the near future of “strategic” war and IMHO it is ballistic conventional weapons. Cities are mutually assured hostages with either hundreds of conventional missiles or handfuls of nukes. Too fast and numerous to easily defend against, certainly accurate on fixed targets and now able to strike targets that move as fleets or ships. Cities may crumble but remain inhabitable/rebuildable. Nothing is safe on the sea surface.

Well…

I think the future of warfare is the refinement of the top echelon of capital holders…who are functionally stateless but appropriate the power of states to wield violence…punching down more and more explicitly on normal people who have no choice but to revolt or war. Basically, war for kleptocrats is just another form of revenue generation, so there doesn’t need to be a fixed objective, just adoption of whatever kind of warfare permits value extraction or sustains existing holdings…including the store of intangible value such as clout and nationalist sentiment, so wars can happen basically as advertising for the efficacy of the ruling class.

The subcomponents of this doctrine are (1) people don’t really matter unless they have utility to the powerful, (2) short term revenue extraction to create liquid assets is more important than infrastructure, because the latter is dependent on a working, compliant population and that cannot be taken for granted because most people don’t matter.

The most explicit version of this would be Syria: Assad has manuevered the situation where he’s destroying the infrastructure that makes his state liveable, but the spoils are sufficient to enrich himself and provide compensation to his cadre of spoils-taker. I turn, the refugee crisis creates a crisis ripple that effects his opponents and the opponents of his arms suppliers and fellow kleptocrats…but also he’s under the umbrella of regional powers…Iran and Russia…using Syria as a proxy conflict with other regional powers. And there’s an entire class of money men…arms dealers, Panamanian bankers, dudes that just like money…that facilitate the ongoing conflict because it makes their capital holdings go up.

Future wars will looks like banana wars and proxy wars more than world-stretching conflicts, up to and including a lot of punching down. But also…there’s a kind of indirect warfare where a powerful state intervenes in a weaker state and implements a government that effectively wars on its own population to achieve material goals that primarily benefits the powerful state.

Another aspect of future warfare will be…entirely economic warfare that creates mass casualties because it destroys the logistics of nations. We’re doing that right now in Afghanistan: embargoes disproportionately harm the body politic because there’s no infrastructure, but this is not *technically* an attack. By the same token, Russia can kill Europeans by not supplying gas during winter and it’s functionally aggression while nominally not war.

Right now, the primary doctrine for this is drones, because drones are weapons that can be applied to create maximum casualties with minimum loss of valuable assets…but I think it’s also important that drones have developed a kind of rhetorical grey zone in which no one person has explicitly ordered an atrocity; atrocities occur in the liminal zone of accountability where the trigger puller was following orders and the “intel” was good but the outcome was still 100% dead babies. Basically, society is adopting a weapon that can be used for retaliatory violence and terror while also adopting a framework of validation such there’s always a sufficient threat to lob a rocket at, and at the same time unmaking the international order that can extract accountability on a state or an individual basis.

Drones are also…cheap enough to be used comparatively frivolously by wealthy countries but expensive enough to be nonviable for poor ones. They’re not a weapon you used against an equal, they’re the perfect weapon to use against someone who could put up a determined defense against conventional invasion or occupation.

The future of warfare will probably be set by the fact that if you’re a developed state you lose nothing by unmaking a less-developed states infrastructure or creating depopulation…economy of scale and worldwide logistics mean you’re still making bank if all the people flee and the cities are dust. Especially if you’re atop an explicit kleptocracy, and part of conducting warfare is taking the public money of the nation and transferring it to private confederates.

How wars are fought cannot be pried away from the larger political context of why wars are fought, and you are correct that detente through destructive parity will persist even when the platforms aren’t nuclear…but it seems like a lot of people are gearing up for wars where there is no parity.

Okay…but Europeans did invent the form and justification structure for the modern version of being motherfuckers—including the motherfucker-ness of the Japanese, the Nazis, and (I would argue) the Stalinist Soviets—and their version of being a motherfucker resulted in the largest body count motherfuckers have achieved for a very long time, so it’s not contradictory to believe that motherfuckers are a constant of human experience and that the European model of being a motherfucker continues to jab us in out collective kidneys with a screwdriver.

Yeah, this was my thought on this too, since even casual exposure to peanuts can trigger major reactions. I have a couple friends with the allergy, and one of them is bad enough that can’t enter a restaurant that uses peanut oil for their fried foods without an immediate respiratory event. When she eats out, and it comes to preparation, she is super-paranoid about making sure the shop knows that it literally can be life or death for her. Most of the smoothie/coffee shops who make these type drinks as a rule have a dedicated ‘no nuts’ machine to prevent this from happening.

Tandem top attack warheads are on the Javelin now. The classic TOW-2 was moderately successful against T-90’s in Syria but had the limitation of wire guidance - got to “stay on target” until hit. Javelin has a range of 2.5 miles and is fire and forget so the gunner can scoot to the next firing position while the missile blasts down through the top of the tank. T-90 is fairly well protected against other tanks; not so much from above. It does have an anti-IR “active” protection system but the jury’s out on it yet. The autoloader’s ammo carousel is still utterly unprotected meaning almost any penetrating hit is going to detonate the ammunition.

It will come down to the training of the crews in the T-90 and the personnel firing the Javelin. The Javelin is a lot easier to operate and Russian conscripts are notoriously ill trained. My bet is on Javelin.

Yup. But look at the raw casualty counts in WWII—by far most of the whites were killed by whites, and vastly more non-whites were killed by non-whites. The race/colonial model doesn’t work out.

nationalww2museum.org

The history of whiteness is the history of opportunistic re-assignment of categories to create outer groupings that deserve nothing and a hierarchical inner grouping of “real” people that deserve uplift relative to their caste. Across models what persists is a tier of inviolable leaders, several tiers of enforcers, the largest tier made up of laboring subjects….but this pyramid has a pale beyond which are the noncompliant, the ones without function that can be allowed to die or must be killed.

In action, European colonialism driven by racism and cultural imperialism is using the enforcers caste to push people back and forth across the pale while constructing taboos for why the enforcers cannot empathize with or find cause with the people they act upon…that’s the only real line between white and non-white, though most systems were sophisticated enough to have transitional phases so that kinds of non-whites could be pitted against one another. This occurs both on the collective and individual levels: people are kicked out of whiteness (white trash), people are given provisional whiteness but that whiteness can also be revoked (martial races). The point is not to define that barriers to clarify the shape of the world, the point is the license to set these distinctions and then change them as needed to preserve power and the capture of capital.

White is an entirely invented social category that deliberately has no firm barriers. The earliest people subject to colonial logic were the Irish, who we would now view as “white” but at the time were addressed by Britons in the same tropes and terms used for non-whites. The Irish became white when they were needed to act as enforcers on farther-flung colonial subjects, but remained a suspect kind of white.

The fact that the Germans and Japanese were racist and nationalist within their own categories does not change that they were explicitly modeling their explanatory structures for their empires citing the same pseudo-science and social philosophy as the existing empires of Europe. Fascism and colonialism are the conjoined twins of nationalism, two manifestations of the same understanding of homoousian volk with a destiny.

To the Germans, the Slavs weren’t white at all—a thing that many Western Europeans asserted with less vehemence—and the non-Germanic Europeans were…dodgy kinds of white people that needed some discipline. Their views on Jews as an ethnic other were consistent with views of Jews throughout Europe and Russia. Their plans—although a bit muddled because the NSDAP was basically a bunch of nerds with dstinct Aryan-weeb fantasies—-was colonialist because it presumed an entitlement to the labor of captured out-groups, differing only in that they “solved” the problem of assimilation by planning to eliminate subject populations entirely: beyond the pale there would only be the crematorium.

The Japanese literally argued that they were the best kind of Asian and thus had parity with white people, while other kinds of Asians were genetic inferiors that had to be administered by a superior kind…in a manner that coincidentally transferred value to the Japanese. And again…I can’t emphasize enough how explicitly the Japanese argued to an audience of European empire, in European terms, because their leadership fully accepted the premise of colonialism present on the board of the world—they literally created human zoos of other Asian peoples to contrast themselves with. All of which sounds incredibly dumb because, you know, basic “facts” of racial categories, but…again, all these categories are arbitrary and invented by the powerful to explain why their power can’t be questioned.

And this isn’t something that’s over. Interact with a wealthy Emirati and you’ll discover that they view themselves as white, and their indentured South Asian and SE Asia laborers as non-white, and view the abusive power dynamic they’ve established as justified by race and cultural superiority.

And where we really should have a long-term station with a spin for fake gravity. Send fresh crews/food/etc twice a year. Mars is for media stunts.

Yeah, but if we get Musk to go to Mars and just _stay_ there, that’s a win-win for everyone.

Picatinny had developed this in the mid-80s. The test videos looked like the hand of god suddenly appearing to smite the foe.

There are five of them, apparently.

Yeah, a two-body lagrange problem is solvable; just don’t add a third.

A refined oil has no protein, there is nothing to cause anyphylaxis. I get annoyed with this retelling that oil can cause allergic reactions, they can’t.

Newt Gingrich has been the very top of my “Can’t wait until he dies so I can dance on his grave” list for 30 years now.

Newt is one racist bastard that can’t catch a feverous case of ball cancer soon enough.

re: #436 Dave In Austin

Question.

We are sending a shit ton of anti armor weaponry to Ukraine. I’m sure Russian armor will all have reactive counter-measures attached.
Can our stuff get thru that?

Note: Basing reply in part on a game (Arma 3) that models various AT weapons as well as reactive countermeasures, etc.

It depends.

Reactive armor (or one of the Trophy-type anti-missile things) might prevent a warhead from getting your tank.

However, a number of missiles, including Javelins, have a optional top-down attack mode where at the last moment the missile pops up and then dives down into the top of the tank. Where there is no, or at least much less, reactive plates due to engine deck, hatches, and places the crew generally needs easy access to.

Also, there are tandem-warhead missiles. The first, smaller, warhead detonates to knock off or defeat the reactive armor plate. This leaves a gap for the second warhead to hit the primary armor.

Finally, any sort of AT can pretty much inflict a mission or mobility kill by disabling weapons, optics, or knocking off tracks, road wheels, or drive wheels.
