Video: More Than You Ever Wanted to Know About JPEG Image Algorithms

Technology • Views: 22,496

YouTube

I’ve been basically familiar with how JPEG compression works for a long time, but I still learned a lot from this excellent video. When you see how much processing is required to create and display JPEG images, you’ll have a new appreciation for the incredible speed of the algorithms that do it.

Go to brilliant.org to sign up for free, and expand your knowledge. The first 200 people will get 20% off their annual premium membership.

You’ve probably saved 1000s of JPEG images, but do you know what exactly JPEG does? Our smartphones and cameras save images in JPEG format, furthermore, the majority of images you see on the internet are saved using JPEG compression. This format is everywhere, but do you know exactly how it works? Well in this video we’re going to explore the JPEG compression format. This is a rather complicated video, so it may take watching it a few times through to understand it all.

Ok, I generally love the evening programming on MSNBC. But am I the only one who finds Ari Melber’s obsession with rap and hip hop kind of cringy? It’s become almost a constant thing with him online and on air.

I also adore Joy Reid, but her social media has mostly become her hairstyle of the day and fashion based. I could give a damn about that, even if I did, it would be way out of my financial capability. She doesn’t extend it to her show, but come on, she’s so smart and capable. Why the need?

Yes I know, I’m an old lady and it shows.

Someone on Twitter said that JPEG means J’peg in French! 😜

Someone in the thread conjugated it for us (je peg, tu pegs, il/elle peg,…)
And, because French never has enough phrases for sex, there is, “Je fais tu peger!” 🙃

Concur. I find Melber cringey in general, not just for the hip-hop stuff. I change the channel or turn it off when he comes on.

I like Joy, but yeah, the constantly changing hair styles are getting to be a bit much.

A Mom Anon  Jan 23, 2022 • 1:20:43pm

re: #8 Charles Johnson

In Joy’s case some of it does have to do with the whole thing of black women and natural hair vs all the styling and straightening that happens to make the look more “normal”, in other words white. Braids and natural hair are sometimes even excluded from “proper dress codes” in schools. So I get that, but going to a stylist every day is not feasible for most women. Hell, weekly is a lot. We’ve had a few cases here in GA where parents were told their kid can’t come back to school unless they lose the braids or get that wild ass curly stuff under control because it’s “distracting”. So perhaps a bit of that is trying to normalize what women like vs what’s expected.

Ari on the other hand, I have no idea who told him this was enhancing his show. Nope.

Lol! The idea that some schlump with Highway patrol is gonna get 40 or so 70’s stars to show up for a roller disco is just completely ridiculous. They would have gotten Danny bonaduci and potzie. I can still remember the first time on saw Chips, though. 10 or 11 years old and I thought that was a badass trumpet piece, sort of modeled after bob Newhart, where you have the fast bit with the slow trumpet solo.

jaunte  Jan 23, 2022 • 1:40:23pm

David Perry and Matthew Gabriele:

“…these arguments are only very rarely about the actual past. No one in the examples above is debating whether the Nazis did violence to the Jews, whether McCarthy led a witch hunt or whether Mussolini and Hitler were fascist leaders. Instead, it’s a process that makes a rhetorical end run around the real issue, and hence around real debate: If we all agree that a given development in the past was bad, then this more recent event that is supposedly like that earlier one must be bad, too.
When historical analogies are used to foreclose arguments, those analogies aren’t actually historical — they are attempts to leverage one contemporary group’s feelings to sell something. In what ways, really, is a mask mandate to help slow the spread of a deadly pandemic like a formal program of exclusion and, eventually, extermination waged against a group of people? (It’s not at all.) But preventing people from asking too many questions is the goal of those making the analogy in the first place. It’s an argumentative trick, in which the implicit logic is syllogistic rather than analogical: Nazis were bad. If we can liken something else to Nazism, it must therefore be bad, too.”

A customizable brain activity recording device developed by Russian and U.S. researchers is more compact and affordable than current commercial solutions, and generates high-quality signals. The 150-gram (5-ounce) electroencephalographer costs just $350 to build, less than half the cost of commercial counterparts, and is roughly a half-centimeter (about 0.2 inches) in diameter. The researchers have made the instructions for building the device, along with accompanying documentation and software, openly available on GitHub. Said Mikhail Lebedev at Russia’s Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology, “The more convenient and affordable such devices become, the more chances there are this would drive the home lab movement, with some of the research on brain-computer interfaces migrating from large science centers to small-scale amateur projects.”

Eh, there are sensors involved, I’ll consider it a missile. What I like is that it can be fired inside a building, say a second-floor room aimed 45 degrees down at the top of a turret with 500mm penetration. Do that with other rockets or missiles and the back blast will toast the shooter. Urban environments are tanker nightmares to begin with; this would make them worse ;)

I think a lot of those decisions are coming down from the office. MSNBC seems to be trying to get their whole lineup to be a bit more edgy and “exciting” in an effort to get their ratings back up. The woman who reports on traffic on WFAA changes her hair quite often. It’s part of the identity of her, and I suspect, a number of black women (I’m only assuming so, because I am a white male).

little known secret — black women with complicated hair that changes from one day to the next…. a lot of those women have very short hair all the way around, and a bunch of wigs.

A couple days ago I posted that my niece’s husband was the only member of her family who didn’t test positive although he was symptomatic and feeling ill for several days — well this weekend he finally tested positive. A clean sweep of the family. Everyone else is doing fine and the kids are all back in school because they met the requirement of 5 days without symptoms. All, of course, are fully vaccinated and the adults are boosted.

This is true. In Joy’s case, at least on Instagram, her posts about hair also name a stylist and/or salon, but I guess the wigs need a stylist too. I don’t know, she’s lovely and she has a great sense of style and self, and part of what she’s doing is promoting black women owned businesses. That is great, I guess it just overshadows her own work to some degree.

As I recall, she was asked how long it took to do her hair and she replied “I have no idea, because I’m never around.”

We have to get them out.

On the one hand Biden will be called “weak” for doing this. If, on the other hand, he doesn’t do it and spouses and children get killed, he’ll be called reckless. It’s a lose/lose situation.

I’m done calling superspreader events as such.

They’re superspewer events. Because invariably someone is hacking up a lung, and they’re likely infecting everyone in their vicinity.

Just like that idiot Malone at today’s antivax rally.

I love her too, since she’s on the weekends she has a bit more time to delve into some topics. The good thing with MSNBC is that there is a LOT more diversity than the other networks. Lots more women and women of color. But the idea of having to be “edgy” and hip is utter crap that ruins news and current events programming. I just wish that Ari would leave that shit and delve deeper into for real journalism, he has a platform, not just being there for a paycheck.

Trump Loses Big on Executive Privilege
lawfareblog.com

Don’t look now, but the law of executive privilege has undergone a substantial shift.

… Put simply, the former president, whether he knows it or not, is now in a dramatically weaker position than he was only recently with respect to the committee. The new legal landscape, for example, almost certainly means that two top Trump officials—former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadow and former top adviser Steve Bannon—can no longer argue that the privilege prevents them from cooperating with the committee. The same applies to other potential witnesses, and to the former president himself, should the committee seek his testimony. All, of course, may well continue to resist anyway—but if so, they proceed at much greater risk to themselves.

…To the extent that Meadows and Bannon had defenses against contempt prior to the D.C. Circuit’s action in Trump v. Thompson, a witness taking a similar stance now would not—and Meadows and Bannon would not if the committee issued a new subpoena or if the Justice Department were to expand the scope of the contempt prosecution to cover Meadows’s and Bannon’s non-compliance following the D.C. Circuit and Supreme Court’s resolution of the relevant legal questions.

The press may not have noticed how much the law has changed this past month, but lawyers for other reluctant witnesses certainly will.

re: #120 retired cynic

They will all try to run out the clock and delay as best they can, thinking that they can be immunized from prosecution by a GOP intent on covering up their complicity.

But the law doesn’t favor any of them. Lawyers and their clients can’t use attorney client privilege to cover up their crime; that’s the crime fraud exception that applies. Executive privilege doesn’t apply here as the courts have emphatically indicated.

The legal jeopardy for the whole lot of these treasonweasels is high.

And I’m here for it.

Tequila here. Does the trick. It was funny, last night some of our neighborhood had its power knocked out (we didn’t notice because we have battery back up). I took some extra pots-de-creme we had at half-time to the neighbors and noticed some other friends watching the game with them (across the street neighbors also got battery back up with their solar).
