Now getting bashed on Twitter for daring to point out that replacing a liberal SCOTUS justice with another liberal doesn’t fix anything. I guess I’m just a killjoy who hates to see people be happy. Either that or I’m actually being realistic.

Ben Williamson, a top aide to former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, met on Tuesday with the House select committee investigating the January 6 insurrection,” Politico reports.

“His cooperation with the committee is significant, given that his boss, Meadows, is currently facing possible criminal contempt of Congress charges because of his lack of cooperation with the committee.”

The 5 reactionary judges are going to continue to do anything they want. The best thing about this is that at around the same time that they are making abortion illegal in half the country, Biden’s nominee will be presenting a refreshing contrast in her confirmation hearings, which should be somewhat helpful in the midterms.

I would love to see Michelle Obama on the court, but I am also mostly tethered to reality. No one has asked her if she even wants the job. If I were her I would bow out, because you and I know what the hell will happen if she’s Biden’s pick.

Republicans will do whatever they can to fuck this process up. Drag their feet, kiss Manchin and Sinema’s ass and promise them shit, get on tv and trash the fuck out of the nominee, use arcane rules to try to disqualify by whatever means they can. McConnell is the biggest problem here, I’m not sure how the process works enough to know what can be done to stop his bullshit.

Only 93 million? Why whatever will he do?

If I had that much money I could take care of myself, son and husband for life and have more than enough left over to help my grandkids and give the rest to local programs that help autistic adults find employment and educational opportunities.

Rich assholes like trump and co could be financially secure if they didn’t wipe their asses with and waste so much of their resources. Another argument for a lifetime wealth cap.

There isn’t much McConnell can do. As we saw in the Fall of 2020, the Democrats were powerless to stop the GOP from ramming through Barrett before the election.

It’s a liberal replacing a liberal; McConnell will likely not care about this. OTOH if Thomas and/or Alito depart for whatever reason, McConnell will fight to the death to stop a Biden appointment. Of course, if something happened and McConnell became Majority Leader, I could see him not allowing any vote for the remainder of Biden’s term, even if SCOTUS were down to 6 members.

If all Democrats hang together — which I expect they will — they have the power to replace Justice Breyer in 2022 without one Republican vote in support. Elections have consequences, and that is most evident when it comes to fulfilling vacancies on the Supreme Court.”

It may fix things in the long run, but that’ll depend on getting the majority back on the bench. It can’t be discounted since we need to play the long game too, but in the short term, it’s simply holding court. We should still hope for as liberal a justice as we can get though at least.

Unfortunately, he’s a clown who’s picked his targets well. Folks elsewhere went full brainworms about Hillary possibly running in ‘24 because the Post reported his comments, and all it took was the mention of the name ‘Clinton’ for them to throw out any sort of critical thinking. And unfortunately, VP Harris is approaching that level of pariahship to many, where mere invocation of their name is enough to send them screaming rightward. It’s the stupidest shit, but so many ostensibly liberal or progressive folks freak the fuck out at either name that they’re willing to agree to anything so long as it keeps the great evil boogeymen away, and it’s both exhausting and impenetrable. Prosecutors don’t tip their cases unless they’re ready. Grand juries don’t speak under penalty of prosecution themselves - and prosecutors do keep tabs on that kind of thing.

I participated in a grand jury, but I wont say word one about the cases heard, where, or any details at all. Most jury members follow that too. Leaking details of a grand jury proceeding would be very bad for that person.

reading her opinions makes short work of that nonsense

Prosecutors don’t tip their cases unless they’re ready. Grand juries don’t speak under penalty of prosecution themselves - and prosecutors do keep tabs on that kind of thing.

I participated in a grand jury, but I wont say word one about the cases heard, where, or any details at all. Most jury members follow that too. Leaking details of a grand jury proceeding would be very bad for that person.

and it’s an asinine argument:

“there’s been nothing in the newspapers that implicates the congressman”
(that it’s not true is besides the point)

Nobody can seriously believe anything that stupid. So I assume Kristol etc. are just Republican liars playing the both-sides game at times like this when the GOP is particularly difficult to defend.

Admittedly, I get the temptation to believe there is some simple way to retreat from this precipice we’re on in the US, but I don’t think that’s possible.

It may fix things in the long run, but that’ll depend on getting the majority back on the bench. It can’t be discounted since we need to play the long game too, but in the short term, it’s simply holding court. We should still hope for as liberal a justice as we can get though at least.

“In other news, sources are reporting that Kavanaugh apparently had some sort of seizure and fell out a window before anyone thought to save him….” I mean, if republicans really want to play a “power at all costs” game, Democrats will get their turn at it as well.

So I explained that cell phones are just radios and that 5G just operates at a higher frequency, allowing more data to be transmitted. I also said that the only real issue was potential interference with some aircraft/airport equipment.

The Carnegie Center for Literacy and Learning has contacted police after a group of racists tried to derail a Zoom memorial to bell hooks, the famed Berea author who died last month.

The invective started about 20 minutes into the Tuesday night Zoom program, which about 180 people were attending remotely, said Carnegie director Neil Chethik. Staff quickly shut it down and directed people to another, more secure site where they could continue to see authors such as Silas House and DaMaris Hill reminisce about hooks and read from her work.

About half the attendees returned, he said.

“It’s kind of pathetic,” Chethik said. “All they can do is scream anonymously from their bedrooms … it would be sad to be them.”

As much as I hate to say anything positive about Lindsey Graham:

“He believes presidents who win the election get to appoint judges, subject obviously to extreme cases, and I think he’s following through on it,” said Russell Wheeler, a fellow with the Brookings Institution who studies judicial confirmations.

Graham has touted his willingness to support a president’s judicial nominees even if he doesn’t agree with their philosophy, noting he was one of nine GOP senators who voted for Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s Supreme Court nomination in 2009 and one of five who supported Elena Kagan a year later…

In addition to being one of the most likely GOP votes for Biden’s picks on the Senate floor, Graham has emerged as the most reliable Republican vote in the evenly split Senate Judiciary Committee.

Washington Post: More than half of Virginia school districts are defying Youngkin’s mask-optional order

(There are 131 School Districts in Virginia.)

About a week after announcing his executive order making masks optional in schools throughout Virginia, Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) said on a radio show that school districts statewide had rushed to comply.

*snip*

But a Washington Post analysis shows that the majority of Virginia public school districts — enrolling more than two-thirds of the state’s students — have opted to disobey Youngkin’s mask-optional order. As of Wednesday, two days after the order was supposed to take effect, 69 districts, or 53 percent, are still requiring masks for all students inside schools. Cumulatively, those districts enroll 846,483 students, or about 67 percent of the state’s public school student population. The divide falls along partisan lines, although not perfectly: Almost every district that opted to make masks optional is in a locality that voted for Youngkin in the 2021 gubernatorial election.

*snip*

The Post analysis found that 58 districts, or 44 percent, have so far agreed to make masks optional in obedience to Youngkin’s order. Cumulatively, those districts enroll 397,108 students, according to Virginia Education Department data, representing 32 percent of all public school students in the state.

Four districts in Virginia either have yet to decide about masking — some have school board votes planned for Thursday — or have not published any information on the issue, leaving their stance unclear. The Post has contacted these districts and will update its database when answers emerge.

Militarization of police:

GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) — After heated debate, Grand Traverse County Commissioners approved the sheriff’s department’s request to purchase a Bearcat.

The $260,000 armored personnel vehicle was part of the sheriff’s budget approved in December, but the actual purchase of the vehicle still needed commissioners to vote on it.

There was debate Wednesday morning over whether the Bearcat was needed, how it will be used, and how else that money could be spent.

“I think it really just comes down to are you willing to have your family member have their lives at risk? Because the sheriff’s department is not equipped with what they need,” Commissioner Penny Morris said.

“You’re setting up these choices well, where you got to choose between these two and the choice has to be more weapons,” Commissioner Bryce Hundley said. “And then over here, we’ll see they got more weapons, so you got to choose more weapons and I can’t abide by that and that is what has me so on the fence.”

After discussion and public comment, commissioners voted 6-1 to approve the purchase. Betsy Coffia being the only “no” vote.

The next step will be for the county to actually place an order to the vendor. There is no word yet on when a delivery could take place.

My dad and I had a lot of trouble communicating when I was young. He was a tolerant and kind but taciturn guy. We finally found a way by playing ping pong in our basement in my late teens and twenties (when I came home for breaks and he was retiring). We could fall into a rhythm and just start talking. I always felt guilty because I knew I would never live up to his standard as I perceived it. Later I realized it didn’t matter and that he was proud of me anyway. So it hurts to call to wish him a happy birthday when by the end of the call he doesn’t remember it’s his birthday. He still seems to remember my voice, though. And I’m grateful for that.

Child rapist is about to go through some things.

Having sex with a minor is rape.

We need to stop rationalizing that as something else or euphemistically calling it sex with a minor.

If you’re engaging in sexual acts with a minor, that’s rape. You’re a child rapist.

I should clarify - he’s an accused child rapist. We have multiple witnesses corroborating that he had sex with a minor, which is child rape.

A Stella McCartney pantsuit IN PARIS!

Oh the horror!

re: #275 Patricia Kayden

Pantsuit designed by Stella McCartney and likely tied to the 50th Anniversary events. They aren’t fully ending the historic outfit, and there’s a riffing on the classic costume.

Aww, I think it’s cute as hell. What are all these idiots going to do when they go to a Disney park in the US and Minnie is wearing her usual ensemble? Sigh. Stupid hurts my head.

A reduction in unemployment benefits… to reduce the worker shortage. Because that worked SO well for the states that ended the ARA unemployment benefits. Fucking moron.

re: #284 Dopamine Fish

Poor people are poor because they are one or more of the following:
Lazy, criminal, bad people who don’t believe in god enough or at all, they have bad character and poor decision making skills, they aren’t very smart, etc etc. So, it follows that treating them worse than stepped on dog shit is the only way to fix their low life problems.

If they were really fiscal conservatives they would understand that if you invest in the people you were fucking elected to represent, the need for government help would lessen and stabilize over time. Maybe even less than a generation if the right programs with enough funding were utilized. Eventually you would have such low numbers of people in need that many programs could pay for themselves in the form of community improvement. Those tax dollars earned by people making a living wage and the money they spend in their communities would amount to more than money put into those programs. Sigh, but no, we keep on hating each other while the rich rob us blind.

What, specifically, did she do to earn that approbation, other than Being Black & Having A Vagina? If nothing else sticks, fuck that noise.

Some extra BS about “she’s a cop”, “slept her way to the top” and backsplaining about her primary showing to show ‘See, she’s incompetent and everyone hates her, why don’t you hate her too?!’ BS. Incoherent shit that seemed to fish for reasons to be mad about her essentially. Accelerated version of what happened with Hillary.
