I absolutely love that the legacy media are pretending that the GQP are acting in anything resembling good faith when they bitch endlessly about the race, gender, or political views of the as-yet unnamed nominee. That none of them are asking the obvious question: “Aren’t you just going to vote against the nominee no matter who they are?”

Something to do with Trump’s visit?

From WaPo:

Here’s why: Last week, state Rep. Walt Blackman introduced legislation to prevent schools from requiring students to be vaccinated against the coronavirus and, for female students, the human papillomavirus, or HPV, even though the vaccine has been shown to significantly reduce a woman’s risk to develop cervical cancer. On Tuesday, state Rep. Neal Carter proposed amending Arizona law to make it illegal to discriminate against anyone based on vaccination status.

That’s certainly not going to help, but has it produced effects already? AZ’s bump up looked sudden. I’ll try to backtrack, if it is a strong enough increase to overcome “lumpy” reporting.

19
Decatur Deb  Jan 28, 2022 • 1:43:30am

AZ deaths took a couple swings up around 5 DEC and 30 DEC. The raw case counts really soared after 30DEC. If the numbers are too small, they become more subject to random causes.

Mrs. Fish is exactly the opposite; if it doesn’t run all over her plate when she breaks it, she doesn’t eat it. The best way I know how to make runny eggs is to cook eggs in the middle of bread; the timing of properly frying the bread seems to work perfectly with frying the egg to a nice runny (but not raw) consistency.

LOL, now I want a breffist at McDonalds, but they are probably out of hash browns.

The value of fake cryptocurrency Grimacecoin has rocketed by as much as 285,000% in a matter of hours in response to a McDonald’s joke tweet about Tesla.

The joke crypto, referencing their purple mascot shaped like a tastebud, parodied an earlier request by Elon Musk during a light-hearted Twitter exchange.

The Tesla founder tweeted on Tuesday that he would “eat a happy meal on TV” if McDonald’s accepted Dogecoin as a payment.

And on Wednesday the fast-food company responded with a picture of their popular mascot with the caption: “Only if Tesla accepts grimacecoin.”

My ex refuses to eat a runny yolk, says it goes back to a childhood trauma when her very strict British age-of-austerity-generation parents tried to force her to eat a runny egg. She asked if they could just cook it a bit more so it was solid but they told her that she was to obey her parents, and besides it’s better that way.

She was forced to sit at the dinner table until she finished it. When she had not finished it at bedtime, she was sent to bed and had it served to her cold the next day.

Finally she snuck it out and hid it on the compost heap, where they found it, washed it off and forced her to eat it in their presence.

Another ex-GF had a similar trauma with her morning cereal. She said she did not like having milk poured over it, because by the time she got to the bottom, the milk was warm and the cereal soggy. She would have been fine eating the cereal dry and drinking the milk but no, she had to have the milk poured over because it was better that way, so she was forced to gag on warm milk and soggy cereal every morning.

Aspirational goal for GOP. They’ve already essentially purged their elected leaders of persons of color except token Senator. They’ve got less than 10% of their caucus as women, so of course it goes without saying that they’re going to go bugnuts racist/misogynist when Biden nominates an African American woman to the Supreme Court.

Of the 56 African American members in the House, just 2 are GOPers. There are two African American Senators, and 1 is a GOP.

That means of all the GOP in Congress, just 3 are African American. GOP does slightly better with Hispanics, but not by much.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Emergency crews Friday were on the scene of a bridge collapse in Pittsburgh.

Police reported the span, on Forbes Avenue over Fern Hollow Creek in Frick Park, came down around 6 a.m.

A photo from the scene shows a commuter bus upright on a section of the collapsed bridge.

There were no initial reports of injuries, Pittsburgh Public Safety said on Twitter.

A natural gas line was cut and there is a smell of gas in the air, the agency said.

Authorities told motorists to avoid the area.

The collapse comes hours before President Joe Biden is scheduled to visit the city to talk about the $1 trillion infrastructure bill that includes bridge maintenance.

President Biden will be in Pittsburgh today to discuss infrastructure. Coincidentally, a bridge collapse in Pittsburgh is a vivid reminder that the GOP overwhelmingly refused to support last year’s historic infrastructure bill, and they refuse to support the BBB.

All the while, these same GOPers are more than happy to take the money that Democrats passed as part of the infrastructure bill, and claim it as their own effort.

Fuck the GOP.

We’re lucky there weren’t more casualties, and thus far no deaths reported in the collapse.

I’m wondering if the bridge collapse may have been precipitated by a landslide or ground movement. Pittsburgh has had a lot of landslides in recent years due to weather fluctuations and water movement through the soil, so it’s possible that a shift of the foundations caused the collapse. Alternatively, it could be a failure of a fracture critical element, or a combination of the two.

My father-in-law disclosed to us, when Mrs. Fish tested positive, that he had found a quack in a nearby city who prescribed him ivermectin. When I ribbed Mrs. Fish about her father being a horse paste consumer, she was like, “No way. That’s what that is? Even your dad isn’t dumb enough to fall for that one.” (Kinda ouch, but also fair.) “I’m absolutely going to make fun of him for that later on in life.” I love my wife.

That looks delish! I pan fried a couple of center cut chops in an iron skillet after covering them with some rib roast, then cut the heat back after they’d gotten a nice sear, made up some beef stock from that fancy stuff that comes in the little plastic refrigerated tub, covered it aluminum foil and let it go for another twenty minutes or so. The piece de resistance was turning some leftover green giant veggies out of the bag once the chops were done, and then having two or six glasses of chateau de Thames embankment courtesy of bota box.

Mrs. Fish is exactly the opposite; if it doesn’t run all over her plate when she breaks it, she doesn’t eat it. The best way I know how to make runny eggs is to cook eggs in the middle of bread; the timing of properly frying the bread seems to work perfectly with frying the egg to a nice runny (but not raw) consistency.

re: #32 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

Zedushka’s mother would not allow him to leave the table until he cleaned his plate, something something “refugee children are starving!” and as a result he has certain food phobias to this day! He found a way to sneak string beans (back when they had disgusting STRINGS, yuck!) into his pockets and from there to the basement toilet tank.

Decades later, after Z & I were married, my father-in-law went downstairs and used that toilet (which was almost never used—-that’s why Z hid his string beans there), lifted up the tank lid & found 15 years worth of rotting string beans.

Trump was a longtime NYC resident, who was videotaped while trying to find his polling place. They went to multiple locations, and he couldn’t remember where he had to go vote. He’s been voting by mail for years, and now wants to make it harder for everyone else to do what he did because he’s incapable of remembering where to vote in person.

Christ, on top of that, it’s probably not like he’s ever filled out a goddamn mail-in ballot. Probably had some flunky do it, or handed Eric and Don Jr. a box of crayons and said “Here. Go to town and don’t fuck it up.”

Smash cut to Don Jr. setting his hands and the ballot on fire and Eric with a mouth full of crayons.

The “best”?

Our measurement sticks are CRUDE. They’re basically hand-made, whittled wooden tools. And the chumps talking “picking the best” think they’re precision metal tools.

You’re lucky to narrow it down to just a 1000 “best” people. After that, you may as well draw a name from a hat when it comes to quality.

Picking a black women out of that 1,000 is just as valid criterion as anything else.

The Covid denying anti-science fascist asshole Olavo de Carvalho DIED OF COVID.

According to this story, Olavo died from COVID on January 24, 2022. I never heard of this guy, but within two minutes of hearing about Olavo I read that he’s a “mentor” of Brazil’s right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro, and then that his own family doesn’t seem all that sad that he’s dead. “The family…asks for prayers for the professor’s soul” was an official statement from his relatives. It sounds like they are concerned that soul might be in a bit of trouble. Also, his estranged daughter, Heloísa, says, “He has blood on his hands,” blaming her father’s “denialist ideas” and dissemination of fake news for the Brazilian government’s delay in purchasing Covid vaccines (625,000 Brazilians have died from COVID). She then says, “But I do not celebrate his death.” Yet, on Twitter she wrote, “May God forgive him for all the evils he committed.”

Would like to see some of the MBA’s out there putting groceries on the shelf instead of devising more time-consuming ‘metrics’ to track worker productivity.

Our local Krogers/King Soopers strike ended with the UFCW reps sounding very happy with the outcome. And a fairly good chance that the Safeway workers who belong to the same union here will not have to strike, because the union has already warned Alberstons/Safeway that yes, they’re ready to hit the picket line too.

My kid at Safeway works in the drive-up-and-go department. During the frantic rush of the Kroger strike, two of that dept’s district/regional managers came in on different days to help out. Both of ‘em had enough experience to be really good at the job, which I’m sure is less and less true as you go up the corporate levels.

TBH, I agree with Bill Kristol here: not that it would make any difference regarding the nominee herself (I’m sure the nominee will be quite qualified, and equally sure that she will face the Usual Opposition from the Usual Gang Of Idiots), but that not setting down a “precondition” for a SCOTUS nomination - would enable the Administration to avoid at least SOME of the bullshit criticism which will be coming its way*. Or, hopefully, be able to turn some of the BS against the critics.

Sometimes, I’m not sure exactly how much the Biden Administration really “gets” the level and complexity of the media biases it faces. Not the RWNJ media: everybody knows they’re hopeless - but the nominal “mainstream” media: who are institutionally incapable of reportage supporting any Democratic Admin or program/policy/initiative without a spasm of Pavlovian bothsiderism and whattaboutism: see coverage (where it exists) of the latest economic numbers just released. Good news, but typically framed as:
“Economy Booms in 2021: Voters Still Unsure”. Maybe the Admin does get it, but just IMO, I’d like to see them get just a bit more proactive in fighting the bias.

*e.g. “Affirmative Action Hire” (as a pejorative) - we’re already seeing this.

It’s still news today, especially since this is its first appearance at sorryantivaxxer. I had known about him since the 1990s but I pay more than usual attention to goings on in Brazil.
He had been influential in the American right since about 2005, when he moved to Virginia. Besides his long-running friendship with Bannon, he is known to have met with Newt Gingrich and had a fair following in tea party circles. He was frequently cited by Alex Jones and other bat guano conspiracy types. In my opinion, he was a major factor in turning anti-science into a much more specifically right wing phenomenon that it had traditionally been. The crucial factor in this was linking religious extremism, especially creationism, with health care quackery. I am aware of course that there is still a sizable element of leftist anti-science, based mostly on rejection of “western medicine,” but it is a legacy sub-strain and has been declining for years. Covid may finish it off entirely, since professional woo-woos can obviously see where the money is.

I’ve been working up a head of steam all morning and Benny-Boy put me over the top.

The asset class. The asset class is a bunch of fucking moochers and grifters who enrich themselves off of other peoples talent and labor. They have now vacuumed up so much money they’re inventing things to invest in and spend it on. And inflation. Can’t the CEOs and shareholders tighten their belts a little to keep prices down. This is how head end up on pikes. 🤬🤬

And of course for the GOP the only two criteria for a lifetime appointment to the federal bench were membership in the Federalist Society, and being young so you could spend decades enacting conservative policy from the bench.

NFTs and bitcoins don’t insulate you from inflation.

It does expose you to massive risks and market manipulations that can send the value (which is always rendered in DOLLARS - a currency by which all others are valued) falling or rising by 20% in a day. That’s not currency. That’s speculation.

The person that tested it may think validation should work like this.

It’s really the least of the portal’s problems. Save Search doesn’t actually save, and I can’t get in at all in Chrome, or open two accounts in different tabs in Edge to copy parameters across from someone who is leaving the company.

Fortunately, the parameters in the six saved searches were not complicated, so I can live without saving them.

Having a person who has been around since they were a teenager retire causes a lot of chaos in a company where everyone works in silos because we’re chronically shorthanded.

Trumpanzees don’t care what’s real. They just want to feel important and cause trouble for decent people just like their narcissistic sociopath leader.

Marianne Wright was halfway through a conference call on Jan. 21 when she received a startling message from her son.

Two women were on their property and were demanding her son open a gate so that they could go see “illegals crossing on rafts.” The women, Wright later claimed in an affidavit, said they were a congressional candidate and a Secret Service agent.

“Immediately, we knew what that was about,” Wright told The Daily Beast on Thursday. “It was an echo and reiteration of the lies Steve Bannon’s ‘We Build The Wall’ campaign published and promoted against us for years.”

Wright is the executive director of the National Butterfly Center, a private nature preserve in Texas’s Rio Grande Valley. The center is a sanctuary for hundreds of butterfly species—and a frequent target for conspiracy theorists after Wright and her colleagues opposed the Trump administration’s plans to build a border wall through the middle of the property.

But after last week’s bizarre confrontation with longshot congressional candidate Kimberly Lowe, the National Butterfly Center is closing its doors from Jan. 28 through Jan. 30, in order to avoid a far-right conference that promises to take supporters (including Lowe) on a field trip to the border.

Nope. Someday I will.

Hyper local story, just for you:

Like 25 years ago, my partner and I were walking past the Forrest Theater on Walnut when Guys and Dolls was doing a run there. The doors were open for intermission and I was like “Hey, no one’s checking tickets, let’s just walk in and grab empty seats when the show starts.”

She wanted no part of my admittedly quasi-immature scheme when another couple approached us, sort of guessed what was going on, and offered us their ticket stubbs. They were leaving early and were like “Here, enjoy the rest of the show on us.”

My partner was cool with that, so we went in and enjoyed the second half of the show. I had never seen it before, and a lot of the “hits” were featured in that section.

re: #299 Punish Domestic Terrorists

I can take you down to a half a dozen schools near me and you will see hundreds of Moms who look just like her. And they will be in PTA meetings and school board meetings trying to make it clear that Jesus belongs in the classroom. They petitioned and whined and anonymously threatened the middle school my son attended until they dropped a basic yoga/calm down beginning to each day. After the Pledge and morning announcements. Because it was “focused on non Christian beliefs and practices”. But the harassment and bullying took care of that. I did call the front office and tell them the entire community isn’t ridiculous and that I supported the idea.

I spent a ton of time at school K-12 pretty much daily. I saw a lot. Heard a lot. If you aren’t a member of a church you are immediately, and I do mean immediately ostracized. Which is fine, their club is annoying and mean, but they hold power over resources and have the ears of administrators and some teachers. I was also a mom to a special needs kid, that brought out the charm.

When shitty behavior is accepted and rewarded over and over, you end up with this shit. The women we’re talking about here are perfect actresses and their crazy is well hidden til they feel safe. Our current climate has made it a lot easier for them to form decent sized herds and given them more power. It’s not going anywhere anytime soon without a lot of exhausting conflict.
