Fox News is way off the mark with their “credible” speculation that VP Harris will be President Biden’s nominee for the Supreme Court, and Stephen has a song for Senator Ron Johnson who thinks society has no duty to take care of children. #Colbert #Comedy #Monologue

Beautiful, but really, really dumb.

Nearly two years after Evangeline Lilly caused an uproar after revealing — at the onset of the Covid-19 outbreak — that she refused to self-quarantine, the Lost actress is once again facing a backlash after attending Robert F. Kennedy’s anti-vaccination march this past weekend in Washington, D.C.

Yup, the same march at which RFK called vaccine mandates “a coup d’etat to democracy” and likened vaccine passports to slavery — with a reference to Hitler and Anne Frank for good measure.

In an Instagram post-Thursday, the Canada-born Lilly revealed that she went to the event to “support bodily sovereignty” as well as in solidarity with the convoy of Canadian truckers driving toward Ottawa in protest of that country’s vaccine mandate.

“I believe nobody should ever be forced to inject their body with anything, against their will, under threat of: violent attack, arrest or detention without trial, loss of employment, homelessness, starvation, loss of education. alienation from loved ones, ex-communication from society, under any threat whatsoever,” the actress wrote in the caption alongside a photo of an RFK Jr. march attendee with a sign that says “Vaxxed Democrat for Medical Freedom.”

I guess we won’t be seeing The Wasp in Marvel films after the next one that she’s already contracted for.

Anytime the subject of infrastructure comes up in conversation, my go to response to the naysayers is the following Al Franken quote.

Franken was on CNN talking about the need for everyone to support funding infrastructure and said, “You know when a bridge collapses, a Mercedes falls just as fast as a Hyundai.”

It’s an interconnected system FFS, how hard is that to grasp? The roads and bridges are one of the main things that makes any sort of modern life possible. This is not a thing to argue about. And yet we do. And then there’s a major catastrophe. And somethings get done, and then attention drifts away along with money. There has to be long term investments in this stuff for it to continue to work. It shouldn’t be up for debate.

‘I’ve never missed a vote’: 95-year-old World War II Veteran says his mail-in ballot application has been denied twice due to new requirements

HOUSTON - A Harris County man fears new voting laws may prevent him from voting by absentee ballot for the first time in his lifetime.

Kenneth Thompson, 95, has been checking his mail daily in hopes his mail-in ballot is among the pile.

Thompson has been voting since he was 21-years-old, and he even recalls paying a $0.25 poll tax in the 1950′s.

“I’ve been voting many, many years and I’ve never missed a vote,” Thompson said.

Thompson considers voting a duty. He served in the U.S. Army in WWII during the European Theater for the right to vote and other freedoms.

Decades later, the vet fears Texas’ new election law, SB1, could prevent him from voting for the first time in his life.

Per law, Thompson must either provide part of his social security number or his driver’s license number that matches his registration record with the county or state.

“He registered to vote in the 1940′s and they didn’t require that,” said Thompson’s daughter, Delinda Holland.

Since Holland can’t meet the new requirement, his mail-in ballot application was denied twice. The veteran said Harris County election officials never notified him and he had to call to find out both times.

The trick is to cook the rice a day ahead of time. Use a really hot wok. When the rice and veg and whatever meat are close to done, create a well in the bottom and drop a couple of eggs in it. Stir them with chopsticks to scramble, then fold into the rice before serving (or scramble them in a separate pan and toss in at the end).

People act as though government agencies have limitless budgets (and thus access to anything they wish) and costs be damned. The reality is that NASA spent the entire Space Race battling just as much against Congressional bean counters as it did the challenges of putting a man into orbit and then on another celestial body. Hell, Congress held hearings into a corned beef sandwich being snuck onto Gemini 9.

There’s approximately 8 million people in the DFW area. So, that’s 800,000 1/10th acre farms, or 12,500 square miles, or a square about 110 miles on each side. Which is roughly the size of the Metroplex. The question I have, is how are the other nine people going to pay for that food and what’s going to keep it from costing a huge amount of money?

You pay for it in Bitcoin, obviously. Yes, it will cost a lot more than industrial food production, but that’s a small (enormous) price to pay to get food production back in the hands of the people.

LOLOLOLOL

My first wife and I (mostly she) raised chickens, WHILE WE LIVED ON THE FARM. Even then, it didn’t always go as planned.
LGF 8-12-08

My first wife and I lived on a farm in the Texas Panhandle.
Wife #1 had only two virtues; she was quite good-looking (several virtues in itself, I suppose) and she was an expert shot, a nationally ranked trap and skeet shooter in fact.
We had coyotes around and, having been raised on Roadrunner cartoons, I took a live-and-let-live attitude toward them. So did the wife, until one of them killed her favorite cat. At that point, she declared war. Fortunately for the coyotes she wasn’t as good with a rifle as with a shotgun.
It happens that we raised chickens, as well as cats, cattle, and grain sorghum. I loathed the vile birds so they were the wife’s project.
One night we heard a commotion in the our backyard. The wife looked out and screamed that there was a coyote in the chicken pen. As far as I was concerned, the coyote was welcome to them but the wife demanded action, so I started to get dressed to go out and investigate. At that point, the wife decided that I wasn’t moving fast enough, so she took matters into her own hands. She grabbed my Lee-Enfield rifle from the closet and aimed out the window, right through the screen (the window was open since it was summertime). I yelled, “DON’T FIRE THAT IN-“

BOOM!

She missed the coyote and hit a big rooster. The rifle had been loaded with Norma hollow-points. Feathers and various giblets were scattered over a large part of the backyard. The other chickens, the deceased rooster’s presumed relatives, were standing around pecking at the remains, thereby affirming my already thorough contempt for their species.

Well, looks like I’m moving end of March.
Management just sent me my lease renewal offer. They’re increasing my rent by 60%. They appear to have decided that I should be paying the same market rate they charge for apartments that they have renovated over the last three years. My apartment has not been renovated
And on top of that they only offered me a 6 month renewal. Seems by their calculations I don’t make enough to qualify for a yearly lease.
And somehow now they don’t have my income verification paperwork, which I handed over last week. Which I had to submit in order for them to give me a renewal offer.
They seemed perplexed that I was annoyed.

re: #191 Shiplord Kirel: Fan of Big Bird, Bert, and Ernie

One of my suburban neighbors tried raising chickens a couple of years ago. They got a dozen chicks and thought it cool to let them graze across their 1/4 acre.

A month or so in, I noticed that were only about 6 and they were spending all their time huddling in their coop. Shortly thereafter, they, and their coop suddenly disappeared. The next time I saw them, I asked about the chickens. They claimed an owl had gotten 6 of the chickens in one evening. And then came back a week later and got the rest.

I guess that not everybody is cut out to be a subsistence farmer. And these neighbors certainly did not have the skills. :/

In the 70s we were living on FIL land in a single-wide, doing the 5 acre survival shtick. (That’s what an Anthro degree gets you in a Republican recession.) We started 25 chicks and the German Shepherd played with them fatally. After discussion with the dog, we tried another 25. None of them died and we were neck deep in eggs for a couple years—couldn’t give them away fast enough. We kept them in a geodesic dome made of electrical conduit covered with chicken wire, but let them range all over the garden. They kept the bugs down, but we lost a few eggs to feral nests.

Yes, the 1970’s with a stagnant economy and heavy inflation really sucked. Particularly for the huge wave of baby boomers who were trying to enter the economy and get a first job. Sorry you also got caught up in it.

And yes, friends who have raised chickens report the same thing. One can suddenly lose a significant chunk of a flock to one issue. Sorry to hear that your pup did not understand the concept of chickens.

And yes, like you, those friends reported that eggs and meat seem to be a boom/bust cycle.

They seemed perplexed that I was annoyed.

i guess i should feel lucky that mine only wants an extra 30 bucks a month, and just wants me to sign a lease 7 months before the old one is up.

Since chickens tend to be diurnal, chances the predator was a hawk.

Anybody considering pig and milk cow husbandry, should be aware of what pig shit smells like and the milk cow has to be milked *every* day. And the cow should be bred maybe every year to “freshen” her milk production.

Chickens aren’t too bad to deal with. I like watching them but like scrambled eggs and fried chicken even more.

Dairy - bovine, sheep, goat whatever - sucks to levels most city folk can’t imagine. Swine? No way in hell. My great uncle had those hell monsters. I was more scared of them than even his Holstien bull.

Beef ranching is even easier than chickens though so long as you don’t get attached to the animals or your momma cow gets mastitis…

Have enough Chickens and you can trade meat and eggs for veggies to keep your garden small and not so much hard work.

ETA: skunks will also prey on chickens. And it is NOT fun to make the mistake of killing the SOB inside the coop. Ask how my dad knows… ;)

You are correct on all accounts. Just reporting what I was told.

In the past 10 years we have had several species of owls, several species of hawks, and even a breeding pair of bald eagles take up residence in the Reston, Virginia area. The predator could also have been fox, coyote, dog or teenager.

Back in the 1970’s, along I270 in the DC area, there were two hog farms and a number of cattle farms. (As well as one bison farm near Dulles Airport.). You knew they were there when you drove past.

Eventually the area suburbanized and, under the new residents pressure, the various county boards worked out ways to ‘encourage’ the farms to re-locate. (As did the economy which rewarded large factory-farms as the transportation and logistics networks developed to support them.)

My ex grew up on a farm (and former plantation, some of the original slave quarters were still there) in rural Buckingham County Virginia.

After her folks retired, a young neighbor across the road took on contract chicken raising with one of the national poultry chains. It was only after he signed that he realized how screwed he was.

He was _loaned_ the chickens at a certain stage in life and had to return them at a certain weight and number, x months later. If he missed those numbers he was subject to penalties.

He had to take out loans from the chain to build the infrastructure. He was subject to periodic inspections from the chain with financial penalties for failing them.

He had to buy feed and medicines from the chain. Usually with loans from the chain.

And, what happened to the manure and waste was his problem, not the chain’s.

My former in-laws had a couple of lousy summers due to smell of huge piles of manure on the neighbor’s land. As well as massive numbers of flies from said waste.

And now for something completely different. This YouTube account is about a rural (about 100 miles north of Tokyo, in Nasu, Tochigi Prefecture) Japanese Buddhist temple master and his cats. It’s mostly about the cats, but the temple master is shown because, well, there are six cats and he feeds them treats as he’s eating breakfast. This guy has cats sitting with him, but there’s not room on the chair for all six, so there are two or three on the floor to his left, and one always behind. It amuses me to see him streeeetch his arm behind to get that one cat a treat as he’s doling them out. And he never forgets a cat. Also, in the background you can see into the living room of the temple master’s house, and see they have a very Japanese setup with a kotatsu in the center of the room. It looks like a comforter with a glass tabletop. Underneath the comforter is an actual heater. Japanese houses are not well-insulated and the kotatsu is the warmest place in the house on winter evenings.

A federal judge on Thursday refused a bid by Netflix to dismiss a lawsuit brought by a former Soviet chess member who sued the streaming giant over a line in its series “The Queen’s Gambit,” in which a fictional character claimed that this “female world champion has never faced men.”

In September, Nona Gaprindashvili — a chess master who became a champion under the former Soviet Union — filed a $5 million defamation lawsuit in the Central District of California. She alleges that the main character Elizabeth Harmon (Anya Taylor-Joy) is a rough approximation of her and that a line in the series finale referring to her real-life success was “manifestly false, as well as being grossly sexist and belittling.”

“By 1968, the year in which this episode is set, [Gaprindashvili] had competed against at least 59 male chess players (28 of them simultaneously in one game), including at least ten Grandmasters of that time,” the lawsuit states.

‘Queen’s Gambit’ defamation lawsuit against Netflix can move forward, judge says

I will say that Fetterman strikes me as eccentric beyond even Western Pa norms. Not having lived there in 30 years, I cannot say how he plays locally. Certainly the news media think that he is ‘colorful’ and good for ‘eyeballs’.

A weekly study of converging right-wing conspiracy theories and faux-progressive wellness utopianism. At best, the conspirituality movement attacks public health efforts in times of crisis. At worst, it fronts and recruits for the fever-dream of QAnon.

the milk cow has to be milked more than just once a day, too, right? and if it isn’t, that poor girl will wail, because tits full of milk is not a fun feeling. my grandfather spent much of a lifetime doing dairy in Pennsylvania, partly as a farmer’s kid, then as a dairy farm inspector for a bit, worked in a creamery, then was kind of a gentleman farmer in the 1950’s and 60’s. He told me once as we were driving around in the early 2000’s that you’d have to be mad to want to get into farming now. Dairy cows typically don’t see the outside of a barn anymore because it isn’t cost effective to let them out to graze. I couldn’t live like that. Fortunately, I’m able to afford the grass-fed milk in the store because those gals may not have much of a life of the mind, but I at least want them to have a chance for one.

Japanese houses are not well-insulated and the kotatsu is the warmest place in the house on winter evenings.

oh god, loud cats! i couldn’t bear it personally, but I do love my Jesse. She’s only loud when she gets stir crazy and MUST GET OUT THIS MOMENT. which she can’t, because it’s 40 degrees outside. Even then, she’s not continously loud. She just gives the Momma cat “Me…OWWWYL!” once every 5 minutes or so for awhile.
