I had to go hunting for the Amazon Fresh order that was supposed to be at my apartment door.

It was outside my building’s back door. The previous worst was leaving them in the lobby.

There’s a good chance that even if there was a heavy push for a media blitz by the party, the media would simply yawn and put on the closest GOP suit the could to ask about it instead.

More about that gorgeous blue glass bowl:

Archeologists Unearth a Roman Glass Bowl Dating Back 2,000 Years in Pristine Condition
thisiscolossal.com

Featuring diagonal ridges, the translucent vessel was made by pouring molten glass into a mold, sculpting the stripes while the material was liquid, and using metal oxide to produce the vibrant blue. Archeologists uncovered it without a single chip or crack.

… Archeologist Pepjin van de Geer, who led the excavation, told the De Stentor that while it’s possible the vessel was created in a German glass workshop in cities like Cologne or Xanten, it’s also likely that the Batavians traded cattle hides to procure it.

First As Tragedy, Then As Farce  Jan 28, 2022 • 5:50:44pm

I’m pretty annoyed that there doesn’t seem to be much of a backlash against the book banning fetish than Republicans have recently expressed. If there is, I haven’t noticed it. What gives?

When I was in my teens, the Satanic Panic was all the rage. Every-damned-thing that a teenage kid was likely to enjoy was proclaimed by one asshole or another to be “Satanic”, either overtly or secretly if you squinted your brain just right (or played the record backwards). This assumption was the justification for keeping it away from kids, and/or for punishing kids who were into it. I can’t properly convey how profoundly Young Me was offended and angered by the Moral Panic Crusaders of the day. This was perpetrated by everyone from evangelical Christian fanatics to bleeding-heart liberal do-gooders. It was a full-on mass delusion.

Apparently we’re doing it again, because schools are back to banning books. It’s not just schools. Some asshole mayor in Mississippi (of course) is withholding $110k from the local public library because he’s mad that their collection includes books that deal in one way or another with sexual orientation issues.

One of the things that astonishes me is the realization that these crusades are in many cases being waged by people my age and younger. When I was a kid, I understood objections to “harmful matter” to be the domain of reactionary OLD PEOPLE. Well, now I am OLD PEOPLE but my attitudes about these things have not changed much from when I was the teenager having my reading material demonized by ghouls and idiots. I can’t imagine screaming at a school librarian because a book about a mass murder that really happened has “dirty words” in it.

Ugh! Never mind. I’m just ranting.

I had moved from Ohio to Georgia three days before that happened. I was folding laundry in my parent’s living room while chasing my then 3 yr old daughter around when that happened. We weren’t allowed to eat fancy sugary cereals. It was cheerios, corn flakes or Rice Krispies. Sometimes oatmeal with cinnamon and sugar. Once in awhile a box of Frosted Flakes would end up at the breakfast table. Because of that I don’t even like any of the cereals in that pic. Mayor tells library to ditch LGBTQ books — or lose funding

The director of a Mississippi library system says its funding is being threatened — and withheld — over the mayor’s personal issues with LGBTQ+ books on display at the city library. Tonja Johnson, who heads the Madison County Library System, said Ridgeland Mayor Gene McGee has refused to release $110,000 in funding unless library officials agree to purge the shelves of books featuring LGBTQ themes and characters, multiple news outlets report. “He explained his opposition to what he called ‘homosexual materials’ in the library that it went against his Christian beliefs, and that he would not release the money as long as the materials were there,” Johnson told the Mississippi Free Press.

Johnson argued that the library system serves “the entire community,” to which McGee reportedly replied, “… the library can serve whoever we wanted, but that he only serves the great Lord above,” she told the outlet. City officials received a handful of complaints from citizens about the books that were originally part of a display in the children’s section at a Ridgeland library in September, according to the Clarion Ledger.

One of the titles was “Toby Wears a Tutu” by Lori Starling, which details the first day of school for a child who enjoys wearing “basketball shorts and tutus” and “playing ninjas and dancing ballet.” McClatchy News reached out to the mayor’s office for comment on Friday, Jan. 28, and was awaiting a response.

Addressing the controversy, McGee didn’t cite LGBTQ literature as a reason for his decision to withhold the funds but said he felt some of the titles are “inappropriate” for kids, the Associated Press reported.

If this comes to pass, our nation has no hope of survival; it will prove that the Republican Party is corrupt beyond repair and has damaged our democracy with no hope of recovery. My hope is that Wicker proves wrong and some Republicans do the right thing. Otherwise, it will confirm the worst that anyone has to say about the GOP — that it is now fully a criminal organization masquerading as a political party, working overtime to turn us into a white supremacist fascist state.

Those people are invisible.

They assume this part of the market just functions.

The only time a service industry drone gets acknowledgment is when things stop working. In this case, the only time that restaurant workers and delivery drivers get notice is when “nothing’s open” or “nobody’s delivering.”

Seriously? If it is a church, then no. Just because they piss on the teachings doesn’t mean that anyone else should. Perhaps offer services in exchange for service - for the help they receive they must give back to others. Bread on the water, as it were. It is possible, not likely mind, just possible, that would help them grow up and move beyond what they have been. True religion is a Kobayashi Maru test I’d say. Yeah, saw an article from CNN earlier where they pretty much acknowledged up front that the GQP will be opposed to and campaign against whoever Biden ultimately nominates, but they might be willing to entertain a candidate if they meet certain criteria. IOW, the legacy media know that the GQP are acting out of bad faith and nothing Biden does will change that, but they also have to sell headlines so this idea that Joe could somehow win over Repubs if he just finds the “right” candidate will persist.

What’s concerning me right now is not the Repubs being so openly hypocritical that it’s sad or the media continuing to pretend that they can be taken seriously, it’s the assurances I’m hearing that the nominee will pass on a party-line vote because “Sinema and Manchin have voted for every judicial nominee so far.”

Why does it concern me? Because the same voices assured me for months that Joe Manchin has never voted against a major Dem bill where his was the deciding vote. A “rule” that he stomped all over and then took a dump on not once, but twice in the span of two months.

I’m wondering about the Spotify business model. To me, there’s no particular attachment to a specific streaming service, since most of the songs and podcasts I care about are on multiple ones, it’s not particularly cheap, and I don’t really care about losing whatever custom playlists I put together. There’s no big user community like Facebook or Twitter that you would have to pull out of. A lot of retention just seems like inertia.

For the exclusive podcasts, like America’s Favorite Stoner Meathead, do people really care about that particular talking head, or do people just listen to whatever talking head the streaming service is currently pushing that falls in the listener’s interest space? I’m sure some people want the former, but I’m not convinced a lot of people signed up for a specific service because of That Particular Person. But evidently people can be convinced to leave a service because of That Particular Person.

My thinking is that the management of most of these services assume their users are far more reluctant to change services then they actually are, mostly by smelling their own marketing farts for too long.

I’m wondering about the Spotify business model.

Aside from the “I don’t like things that are different” issue, the only other thing in my opinion that keeps people using one over another is whatever particular tech ecosystem they have setup for whatever. What apps they use for various things and what apps those apps easily interact with and what apps integrate with their car sound systems, etc. etc. etc.

I personally use several other applications, including custom developed ones that integrate Spotify into them in some way, so saying FU to them and just switching, isn’t just going to a website, clicking a “fuck off” button, filling in a form telling them about how much Joe Rogan is a threat to public health, and then going somewhere else. It’s going to be a process and more than just minor inconvenience.

Even if it wasn’t, I’m not a fan of the alternatives either. I refuse to give Apple another dime until they back off their horrendous sustained campaign to end ‘Right to Repair’ on top of massively overpricing everything. (The move away from Intel to proprietary architectures YET AGAIN, is not a step in the right direction.)

Pandora is (or at least was) garbage when I used to use it.

I’m not saying I wont eventually tell Spotify to fuck off, but I need to research an exit strategy and alternatives and hope they get their heads out of their asses in the meantime.

I recently started a trial run of Tidal.

It’s ok, but its catalog is limited compared to Youtube, for esoteric stuff I like such as Japanese music that is not current J-Pop.

Tidal does have high bit rate tracks, but for my purposes that is irrelevant.

Still, the idea of paying streaming services forever instead of buying a music (and heaven forbid, a physical copy such as a CD) is a model that I think is a loser in the long run for the music lover.

Sure, I can explore stuff on Tidal, though I find Youtube better for that.

I own most of the music I want as well. It’s just not practical to put a terabyte or more of music on my phone so I supplement that with a streaming service. You can’t put that much on any Iphone, and in the Android world where I am, even if I made lower quality versions for smaller file sizes, most phones don’t like MicroSDs over 512 MB, and the FAT32 and exFAT file systems are really bad for music collections. A lot of space gets wasted in the block sizes.

This might not be correct, but I’ve read that Tidal is apparently playing some shady games with bitrates and file qualities, but I can’t remember the specifics.

SAV has a case that has been hospitalized since April 2021.

I did find one article, from Feb 2021, covering one situation.
Who pays the medical bills after COVID-19 treatment?Link

Aguirre didn’t even have a chance to grieve before the bills for his parents came in. The largest claim summary he has received is $1,438,446,66.

Aguirre’s father had Medicare, but he says he was responsible for 20% of his medical debt.

The son is not responsible for the father’s medical debt.
I shudder to think about the bills. I have an annual maximum I pay out with my plan, but I am sure there are a lot of things that are billed that are not covered under mu insurance plan. Who the hell knows?

The top of that chain is probably true: the Foo Fighters pull out of Spotify and it would be big problems for the platform.

Yep. Seeing tweets stating Spotify has lost 4 Billion in value since they chose to go with Rogan instead of Neil Young. Joni Mitchel dumping them as well probably hasn’t helped the bottom line either.

re: #148 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus

I recently started a trial run of Tidal.

It’s ok, but its catalog is limited compared to Youtube, for esoteric stuff I like such as Japanese music that is not current J-Pop.

Tidal does have high bit rate tracks, but for my purposes that is irrelevant.

Still, the idea of paying streaming services forever instead of buying a music (and heaven forbid, a physical copy such as a CD) is a model that I think is a loser in the long run for the music lover.

Sure, I can explore stuff on Tidal, though I find Youtube better for that.

If you’ve got Prime, their normal music is now ultra hd for 7.99 a month. It’s where I’m hanging out Now.

In Japan, people were regularly wearing face masks even before Covid. Its also possible covid will never go away, especially since tens of millions of Americans will never get vaccinated against it.

Yeah, that’s my taunt against people who speak out against masks—don’t go to Japan, masks are well-nigh universal and they’d be having a freakout before getting clear of the airport terminal. As for me, when Covid first started and there were shortages of masks, I dreamed of being in a conbini (convenience store), standing in front of an endcap filled with masks, and then waking up…now there are more masks, so no more dreams.

Nashville officer in shooting loses police power amid review

Nashville’s police chief stripped an officer of policing authority Friday after he fired the final two shots to end a fatal interstate highway standoff in which nine officers opened fire on a man holding a box cutter.

Authorities had pleaded during the traffic-stopping encounter with Landon Eastep to surrender Thursday while they kept their guns drawn, but fatally shot him when he pulled another shiny object from his pocket and pointed it at police as if ready to shoot. That object turned out not to be a gun.

*snip*

NAACP of Nashville President Sheryl Guinn called the case “heartbreaking,” adding she wasn’t surprised after watching Black community members be ignored by other police shootings. Her organization was monitoring the case because even though Eastep was white, she said he was treated unfairly by law enforcement.

In September, Eastep’s landlord filed an eviction case against him, court documents show. The following month, his wife filled out a registration form for them to participate in Nashville’s judicially run diversion program that helps settle eviction cases during the COVID-19 pandemic using federal assistance.

The totally unreliable daily new case count throughout the world (per worldometer) was always less than 1,000,000 before omicron struck — now it’s never below 2 million and, for the past couple weeks, usually over 3 million. The daily death count is still 40% below its height, but it is creeping up. But it won’t be until some years in the future when we learn the true “butcher’s bill” (yes, I know that the phrase is traditionally tied to military conflict) of COVID, by comparing the excess deaths during the period this disease rages among us, especially if it mutates to something more lethal.

Nashville officer in shooting loses police power amid review

As a Nashvillian, I’ll have to agree that all of the officers involved were extremely trigger-happy and that this should not have happened the way it did; I had literally just missed getting caught in the traffic jam caused by this, because I had just gotten to work a couple of exits away and had no idea this happened until the news alerts started to come down a while later.

I saw a video that shown up to right before the shooting started and, with as many officers were there, I see no reason why less-than-lethal means couldn’t have been used; they could have tased or maced him, then zerg-rushed him, but they all had their pistols drawn and used them to deadly effect.

I’m sorry, but every officer that discharged their weapons here needs to be decommissioned during the investigation, not just the officer that fired the last two rounds.

Ukrainian officials sharply criticized the Biden administration Friday for its ominous warnings of an imminent Russian attack, saying they had needlessly spread alarm, even as a new Pentagon assessment said Russia was now positioned to go beyond a limited incursion and invade all of Ukraine…

“They keep supporting this theme, this topic,” President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine said of the repeated warnings by American officials. “And they make it as acute and burning as possible. In my opinion, this is a mistake.”

Bold move at your disbarment hearing.

Moukawsher summoned Cunha back to court earlier this month to defend herself. He told her she faced disbarment and advised her to hire a lawyer. Cunha declined the advice and instead lashed out at Moukawsher.

She called his conclusions “clearly erroneous.”

“I find these proceedings to be intentionally harassing and intimidation and an attempt by Your Honor solely to shut me down for the corruption that I have raised before his Court,” she said, according to the record. “Your Honor has engaged in malfeasance, gross malfeasance, I will not be intimidated. I will remind this court that your so-called historical writing Memorandum of Decision where you touch upon the history that it is, it is a joke and it is pathetic, and you should be ashamed or yourself for subjecting myself to that type of rhetoric.
Frankly Judge, I am ashamed to even be sitting before you with the type of conduct that you have engaged in. You have engaged in material misrepresentation; you have lied to the public.”

Cunha continued for a moment or two before Moukawsher asked her to stop speaking.

“Yes Judge,” Cunha replied.” Yes. I will obey, Your Honor, would you like me to bow, I’m sorry, I am below you. I will obey. l will be quiet, no problem. Thank you.”

In his written decision, Moukawsher said it is “monstrous” to make Cunha’s conspiracy claim “without thought, without evidence, without restraint, repeatedly, on the record, in court, with a specific claim about a list that proves not to exist.”/blockquote>

Doesn’t it? I thought that religiosity and IQ were negatively correlated.

Wife has been gone for a month, and I drive to Pensacola airport to pick her up in the morning. There is some amount of cleaning and redding-up to be done.

Bold move at your disbarment hearing.

Wow—I learned that judges can summarily disbar attorneys in Connecticut. That’s…kind of amazing. Is there any other state out there where judges can just do this sua sponte (on their own motion)? That said, her actions were pretty heinous.

Was it Citizen K who said something about assessing the dryness of your comments? Some kind of meter with a rating might help.

Not so cool for that gull, but yeah: the Big Eagles aren’t all that common down here in the City (I don’t think I’ve ever seen one) - I guess the pigeons are (wisely) taking shelter…

I hope that our New Jersey, New York and New England Lizards are managing the storm. Down here in Northern Virginia we have managed to weather the 1/4 inch of snow (with drifts as high as 3-4 inches!).

Meanwhile my Bostonian sister forwarded this forecast to my Tampa, Florida brother:

They should all be fired.

We seem to have partially dodged a bullet. Predictions as late as early this morning called for 9-12” with winds up to 40MPH. Now our totals for snow are more like 4-5”, but the wind speeds are the same. I think we’re about 30 miles from the coast where things are far worse. Anyway, it looks bad outside my window, but it’s most just wind blowing the fine powdery stuff around.
