MADE UP MIND
(David Landreth/Joseph Sydney Landreth/Jonathan Singleton)

It starts out slow
With go ahead and go
Pretty soon the melody is like a rainstorm tin roof symphony
But it starts out slow
It goes on and on
For way too long
It always ends on a bad note
If you could dance at all you’d dance alone
It goes on and on

The quiet behind a slamming door
The break of a heart that won’t break no more
Get-away wheels in a straight line
Serenade of a made up mind

There ain’t no rhyme
Just wasted time
Moonlight spotlight shining down on
A made up mind and a love gone wrong
There ain’t no rhyme

The quiet behind a slamming door
The break of a heart that won’t break no more
Get-away wheels in a straight line
Serenade of a made up mind

The quiet behind a slamming door
The break of a heart that won’t break no more
Get-away wheels in a straight line
Serenade of a made up mind

Of a made up mind

Moonlight spotlight shining down on a made up mind

Moonlight spotlight shining down on a made up mind and a love gone wrong

Moonlight spotlight shining down on a made up mind and a love gone wrong

Russia’s Assault on Ukraine Has a Crusader Element
A religious historian breaks down the Orthodox Christian aspect to Putin’s calculations.
esquire.com

Butler Bass goes on to an account of the historic role that Ukraine played in the formation both of the Russian state and the effect that the split between Ukrainian and Russian Orthodox churches have played in that history. And this is not ancient history, either.

When the Soviet Union collapsed, Ukraine had several different Orthodox churches, only one of which was in close relationship to Moscow. In 2018, two of those Ukrainian churches and some of the Moscow-leaning Orthodox parishes joined in a union and created a newly unified Orthodox Church of Ukraine, a fully independent national ecclesial body under no control from Moscow, with its head in the ancient seat of Orthodoxy in Kyiv.
Putin and the Moscow Russian Orthodox church authorities protested. They’ve been claiming the 1,000 years of Kyiv Christianity as its own — basically appropriating Ukraine’s church history — to the point of erecting a gigantic (and controversial) statue of St. Vladimir outside of the Kremlin.

Just what this nightmare needs: the influence of a 13th-century religious conflict.

Cnn:

Instead, China’s Assistant Foreign Minister Hua Chunying — who repeated staid lines about seeking peace through dialogue and said the situation was “not what we would hope to see” — was quick to point the finger at the US, implying that Washington was a “culprit” for “fanning up flames,” referring to US warnings in recent weeks of an imminent invasion.

That is some effed up logic.
Putin *had* to invade because we warned he was going to invade.

The only reason we warned was because HE WAS GOING TO INVADE

In a previous thread I gave reasons why NATO should not intervene directly in Ukraine and engage the Russian army. I thought of another one: we should want Sweden and Finland to join NATO rather than retain their neutrality and count on NATO coming to their rescue if they are attacked. If they join NATO, then their forces can be integrated into the NATO command structure, NATO forces can be stationed on their soil, and defense planning and military exercises can be conducted to prepare for possible attacks.

re: #14 Charles Johnson

I’d refer every last one of those treasonous fuckers to what Trump said just yesterday about Putin being a genius for taking a $2 hit with sanctions but gaining Ukraine in the process.

The pretzel logic and caterwauling by right wingers over their current/prior support for Putin will not be forgotten. They emulated a white nationalist strongman and thought Trump could do for them what Putin was doing for the Russian oligarchs.

Email from Social Security Works:

Yesterday, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) made a decision about how to proceed with Trump’s pilot project for Medicare privatization. This decision is a betrayal―and we’re fighting to reverse it.

While Biden is dealing with the Ukraine crisis and choosing a historic Supreme Court nominee, his Director of the CMS Innovation Center chose to stab his administration in the back. Instead of ending Trump’s Medicare privatization experiment, Director Liz Fowler (a former Big Pharma executive) chose to simply re-brand it.

Zero self awareness that Alaska was historically… Russian.

Ukraine was historically independent. Putin is trying to reassert Russian imperial dreams of living space on his borders. The effect of his invasion will have the opposite outcome from what was intended as more countries seek NATO membership and the nuclear umbrella, because Russia simply can’t be trusted.

More pressure building….

Switzerland told banks on Friday to freeze the assets of people and entities on a European Union sanctions blacklist that the neutral country has adopted to ensure it is not used to circumvent measures against Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.

Will Alaska Repugs try to put re-unification with Russia on the ballot? It might be worth a shot for Putin. He could promise them literally anything, tax cuts, free oil, no vaxx or masks, abolition of public schools. His flying monkeys could talk it up, and the goobers would eat it up. They wouldn’t even notice when he failed to deliver and non-collaborators started falling falling out windows.

I’m so old that I remember when conservative bloggers were touting Sarah Palin being head of the Alaskan National Guard as vital military experience qualifying her for the vice-presidency and her ability to see Russia from her house as a plus. Now, it seems the Alaskan GOP would welcome Russian invasion with open arms.

The starkest irony here is that the main evidence people have of Neo-Nazis “running” Ukraine is the Azov Battalion, whose presence has not been properly leveraged into actual actionable political power. In other words, he’s asking the part of Ukraine that actually has absorbed neo nazi presence into overthrowing the gov’t on a part of them being the ‘real’ neo-nazis?

Then again, it’s probably intentional projection, so not sure it’s technically ironic.

China’s urging Putin to negotiate, their half-hearted acknowledgement of Ukraine’s sovereignty is because of NATO working together in concert. The amount of pressure that Russia is facing, and in such a unified manner, genuinely unnerves China.

There could’ve been changes. You could make him sound a bit funny, certainly a bit bumbling or hapless (the Columbo trick), but you’d need to show a little hint of darkness to his character. Maybe show him being all buddy-buddy with Palpatine, or acting more like a confidant to Palpatine - after all, they’re both from Naboo, so that wouldn’t be unusual.

That would’ve made a great plot twist. The buffoon we were all laughing at is suddenly no longer a bumbling sidekick character, but a bona fide danger to our protagonists.

re: #93 Dr Lizardo

There could’ve been changes. You could make sound a bit funny, certainly a bit bumbling or hapless (the Columbo trick), but you’d need to show a little hint of darkness to his character. Maybe show him being all buddy-buddy with Palpatine, or acting more like a confidant to Palpatine - after all, they’re both from Naboo, so that wouldn’t be unusual.

That would’ve made a great plot twist. The buffoon we were all laughing at is suddenly no longer a bumbling sidekick character, but a bona fide danger to our protagonists.

a buffoon, but suddenly a bona fide danger. why does that sound like such a familiar entity? :-)

I really liked the theory. I wonder if Lucas intended it that way and then backed off due to the universally visceral hatred for jar jar. Though I’m probably giving Lucas too much credit. Still, it would have made perfect sense given the ‘phantom menace’ title.

Going to rant about Star Wars a bit. Loved the original movies growing up. Thought the prequels were weaker, but still okay; though Haden was horrible in it (and I’ve had to endure ridicule from my friends because we look a LOT alike). Then came the reboot: The Force Awakens was a rehash of earlier movies, a JJ Abrams special, but then, OMG, The Last Jedi… It was such garbage that it made Highlander 2 look like a masterpiece by comparison.
It totally destroyed the universe for me. What a waste.

Rogue One was excellent.

Teddy's Person  Feb 25, 2022 • 1:02:16pm

Apparently, the documents Trump had squirrelled away at Mar-a-Lago were super classified.

Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney (D-N.Y.) sent the request for further details ahead of the Feb. 25 deadline set by the Archives for an inventory of the contents of the 15 recovered boxes. The Archives confirmed reporting by The Washington Post that classified materials were found within the boxes and that torn-up records had been transferred to the Archives but not reconstructed by the Trump White House.

In a letter to sent Thursday evening to Archivist of the United States David S. Ferriero, Maloney asked for a “detailed description of the contents of the boxes recovered from Mar-a-Lago … and identification of any items that are classified and the level of classification” by March 10.

“There are records that only a very few have clearances” to review, one of the people told The Post. The documents are so sensitive that they may not be able to describe them in an unclassified way, and therefore, such documents might be described broadly in a classified addendum to the inventory, according to the two people. A lot of Czechs I’ve talked to noticed that he was looking pretty bad in his Monday evening TV address. Speculation is anything from a botched Botox treatment to some kind of liver dysfunction (he looked pretty bloated, to be honest).

Putin was rumored to have Parkinson’s a few years ago. Not sure what became of that, but if this is the last act of a dying man, may he do so quickly.

The four people familiar with Friday’s exchange requested anonymity, since they were not authorized to discuss the deliberations.

But, they said, when Guilfoyle appeared on Friday’s virtual meeting, she and her lawyers grew immediately concerned when they saw who else was on the call, including lawmakers on the committee such as Representatives Adam Schiff of California and Jamie Raskin of Maryland, both Democrats.

Guilfoyle spoke up and asked why members — and not just lawyers and committee staff — were on the call, three of the people said.

“Kim balked and said this isn’t my understanding,” one of the people said. A second person described her as “outraged,” since she believed this conversation was going to be more informative and not a formal deposition.

“This is not my understanding,” Guilfoyle told the committee, and then said she would cease to continue the conversation until her lawyers had further discussions with the committee about the format, the people said.

I read this “life hack” a year or so ago. To trim her dog’s nails, a woman wrapped plastic wrap around her head and smeared it with peanut butter. The leader of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in the United States warns that Russia’s invasion could end with his religious tradition being erased from the map.

Speaking to the Catholic News Agency on Thursday, Archbishop Borys Gudziak urged Americans to pray for Ukraine, but added that they should not stop there.

“They can be critically informed and call out people like Tucker Carlson and others who are enchanted by President Putin,” Gudziak said.

Carlson, a prime-time personality on Fox News, has used his television platform to attack Ukraine, falsely claiming it is “not a democracy,” and to dismiss criticisms of Putin.

“Why do I hate Putin so much? Has Putin ever called me a racist?” Carlson asked in a recent broadcast. “Is he trying to snuff out Christianity?”

This really gets to it.Trump was working hand-in-glove with pro-Russian Ukrainians through Rudy on the private side and Pompeo on the official side. They did absolute everything they could to destabilize Zelensky and his government. I do not understand why this isn’t being turned into ads right now.

I am just about to log off for Shabbos, but I just remembered a conversation I had with my grandson a couple of years ago. As a Chabad youth he has visited many countries, including Japan, China, Peru, Columbia, Argentina, Mexico, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Portugal, Italy, Israel (because of course!), & etc. etc.

I asked him of all the countries he has visited, which one did he like the best? He said without hesitation, “Ukraine!” I was like “Why Ukraine?” He said “It’s Eretz Kadosh” (Holy Land)

I said “Israel is the Holy Land” and he said “Yes it is, but there are more Hasidic holy places in Ukraine than anywhere else in the world! Think about it: Medzhibozh, Mezritch, Uman, Lubavitch, Mariupol (and he named a bunch of places I can’t remember at this moment)

GOOD SHABBOS WHEREVER YOU ARE!

Except on the PR front it leaves Russia even more isolated. It appears that Russia’s only allies are Belarus and the GQP. It could help foster more unrest in Russia.

The buffoon we were all laughing at is suddenly no longer a bumbling sidekick character, but a bona fide danger to our protagonists.

oh, speaking of the columbo trick, I recently stumbled across this on Youtube. Peter Falk was a fucking genius:

Wait till the fighting is over. And election season starts.

I don’t want to sound like some political fanboi here, but every word and pronouncement out of Joe Biden’s mouth has just made me extraordinarily grateful that he is POTUS, and not the incompetent pro-Russian tool who disgraced the office before him: given the situation he had to face when it suddenly arose (and despite the sick desperate revision from starboard, it was little of his doing), I think Biden has reacted (and acted) excellently. But of course, to little appreciation, AFAICT, still less praise…..

One thing that makes urban warfare especially difficult: when you start blowing up buildings, you are providing your enemy with lots of new hidey-holes. I would guess that Ukrainian snipers will thoroughly enjoy taking down Russian soldiers while working through the new warren of places to take shots from. You can find shot locations that have no good way of approach left because stairs have all been blown out. See Full Metal Jacket, for instance. Then imagine several thousand snipers at work.

One other thing to consider. Even the small victories are vital. You destroy tanks with javelins it means that suddenly every time you send a tank out, you have to have helicopters for cover. Every time you have to assign helicopters for tank cover, you are taking helicopters away from other tasks, so now maybe you need to have fighter jets that are doing routine shit, blowing up buildings, for instance, instead of going head to head with enemy fighters elsewhere. You kill 200 Russians in a transport plane, suddenly you have to find 200 new folks to do that particular mission. Maybe the powers that be decide it isn’t worth just sending those 200 new folks out again in the same mission, so now you are tying up additional forces to cover those 200 new folks. So enjoy every Ukrainian victory, no matter how seemingly small.

Hold on. If they’re claiming that state courts can’t reject a map once it’s been approved, and the SCOTUS normally holds that state maps are state matters, does this essentially mean that they’re arguing that there’s no way to object to a map once it’s enacted?
