We have an annual Memorial Day parade in our small borough every year full of the local high school marching band, fire trucks, classic cars, and about eleventy hundred John Deere tractors. I so want to get the motorized kids’ version and also a motorized kids’ tank but paint the tank Russian colors and have the JD “tow” it. My husband doesn’t think that’s funny. I think it’s hysterical.

Speaking of exhuming… Bringing up this post from the cellar where it was CL’ed because I saw more news on this subject after I posted it:

re: #27 sagehen

as long as we were tied up in Iraq and Afghanistan, and all those NATO peeps with us, our actions in Europe were constrained.

Now, we can devote our full attention to these people who are within easy car/train distance.

This is very true.

Additionally, I seem to remember a quote attributed to the Russians that our presence in Afghanistan kept the religious militants from coming into the ‘stans and Russia over the past two decades.

Russia’ 12,600 mile land border is now a lot more exposed. Plus, with half their active duty Army being tied up and trashed in Ukraine, they are a _lot_ more vulnerable.

And a lot of folks are starting to test this. Right now its just little pokes to see what happens. But it could escalate back into the 1990’s again.

Azerbaijan/Armenia, Ossetia/Georgia, Moldova/Transnistria are all stirring publicly. Finland/Sweden warming up to NATO. And who knows what is quietly happening in Central Asia and further East. Plus, for some inane reason, Russia has suddenly decided to troll Japan over the Kuril Islands.

Putin has not only trashed the Russian economy and military, but also its geo-political situation.

I suspect that you are correct about the arc of history.

But, I’m thinking that King Arthur being Celtic/Welsh, his return might not be a good thing for Angles and Saxons.

Remembering from a distant historical lecture..

While historians do not have specific proof of Arthur’s existence, there was a generation where the Germanic invasion of the British Isles was not only stopped, but partially reversed.

And that in the following generation there were a whole series of children named “Arthur”, where there had been few to none previously.

US celebrities and media personalities can always make anything more about “ME!” I wish all of the news channels would call their news anchors back to the US. 3/4s of the time they’re talking to people in NY or DC, and they’re not adding value to their local human interest pieces (How do you feel…). They sound like war tourists.

A Ukrainian woman had a great comeback to Ali after he played a news clip and asked her about it. She said “I’m not watching the clip, I’m living it”. Totally went over his head.

As noted in our previous post, in the Southern Hemisphere, sea ice reached its record minimum extent for the year on the same day, February 25. For the first time in the satellite record, which began in 1979, extent fell below 2 million square kilometers (772,000 square miles) at 1.92 million square kilometers (741,000 square miles). This year’s minimum extent was 190,000 square kilometers (73,400 square miles) below the previous record set on March 3, 2017. The Antarctic minimum extent is 930,000 square kilometers (359,000 square miles) below the 1981 to 2010 average minimum of 2.85 million square kilometers (1.10 million square miles).

Starting to sound more like John Entwistle’s death than anything. Though the only story I’ve seen with more than the tweet is that a call came in of chest pain and by the time EMS arrived he was unresponsive. Been bitten more times than I like to admit to. My coworkers would know when I fucked up and forgot to discharge the 2nd anode when they heard the very loud bang of me slamming into the metal storage locker in front of my bench followed by a very loud FUCK! The thread set me to researching our old ASCOR studio strobes. The bank like that in the photo would feed a half-dozen or so strobe heads, each providing 40,000 watt/seconds of flash. That provided enough light to expose 8X10 sheets of ASA 32 film at small f/stops.

Since the beginning of Putin’s invasion, I’ve been wondering if Belarus was going to be either:
1. A willing ally.
2. A reluctant ally.
3. A weak-link in the anti-Ukrainian bloc
4. An active roadblock.

I will freely confess to knowing little/next-to-nothing about Belarusian affairs, outside of what I read on the Internet (FW that’s W), but I’m guessing that some sort of scenario of “seriously fucked” is going to be playing out in that country’s near future…

And that even if she HAD somehow got elected, at this point in time, Ms Tsikanousksya would likely be needing a Ouija board to talk to Joe Biden, or anybody else…

My understanding (fwiw) is that Lukashenko, the head of Belarus, is a weak ally of Russia.

By that, I mean that he cannot stay in power without Russia’s help. He does not have the support of most of the population. He does have the support of certain elements in the country, such as the security services and the military.

But, I suspect that even those groups are carefully watching how things go. And if they calculate that the winds have changed, they might consider changing course.

Lukashenko cannot afford to send the military into Ukraine for two major reasons.

First, the military is likely to perform extremely poorly.

In general, a military whose primary mission is to suppress its own people often fares poorly in the very different mission of combat against a determined enemy. Additionally, the enthusiasm and morale of the Belorussian military is reportedly quite low.

Second, the military is a major factor keeping Lukashenko propped up. If it collapses, is destroyed, or is shown to be utterly ineffective, he loses a major part of his support base.

Serious question: if a sitting Representative refuses to voluntarily resign their seat (for whatever reason) what are the existing mechanisms (if there are any) to remove them?
And, presumably, have the vacant seat filled by whatever electoral process the Rep’s State provides?

ISTR a couple of cases from the not-do distant past where the House expelled some blatantly crooked members - by, I think, majority vote on a resolution of expulsion: but in today’s semi-dysfunctional Congress, that doesn’t seem all that likely - Fortenberry’s conviction notwithstanding. (Can he still demand to get all his Congressional workload forwarded to him in jail?)

An American couple touring the British Isles see a sign for a place called Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch and decide to head there for something to eat. As they make their way there they debate the pronunciation of the town’s name.

They stop for lunch and one tourist asks the cashier, “Before we order, could you please settle an argument for us?”

The cashier nods.

“Would you please pronounce where we are for us - very slowly?”

The cashier leans over the counter and says, “Buurrrrgerrrrr Kinnnnggg.”

Felons are eligible to run for and serve in Congress, but the vast majority choose to resign under threat of expulsion. Congressional rules also bar members from voting on legislation after a felony conviction unless their constituents reelect them, the Associated Press reported.

Mike Flood is a Trumper.

Jeff Fortenberry And Mike Flood Are Extreme (Daily Kos, January 31, 2022)

What has been largely overlooked since his announcement is that Flood is a Trumpist extremist. The Norfolk state senator promised to be a so-called “strong conservative.” In his announcement for the CD01 seat, Flood launched a partisan screed using Trump like buzz phrases such as “radical socialist agenda” and contended that the Democrats would allegedly “destroy the country.” These are right wing nut talking points.

Meet the Republican candidate in Oklahoma who wants to kill “godless communist” atheists by shooting us in the face or send us to Gitmo. He even put it in a campaign advert on television.

GOP Senate Candidate Excited To Murder All Us ‘Godless Communists’

He loves guns. He loves militias. He really hates atheists.

He probably hates those of us Christians who don’t agree with him on (for example) transgender people. Kind of like that guy who ran for governor in MS a couple of years ago, (he lost) and it just came out that he wants to kill transgender people and their supporters.

In baseball, some semblance of normalcy continued into Thursday, even as other leagues began shutting down. Six spring training games in Florida began around 1 p.m. ET, all with fans in attendance. That went against the wishes of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who recommended the cancellation or postponement of mass gatherings in his state. MLB later announced that all other spring training games had been canceled, while World Baseball Classic qualifier games in Tucson, Ariz., had been postponed indefinitely.

US Army veteran who has volunteered to fight in Ukraine says he amps himself up for battle by thinking about ‘punchable’ Tucker Carlson

A US Army veteran who has volunteered to fight against Russia in Ukraine said that he prepares for battle by thinking about Tucker Carlson, The Guardian reported.

“When I need to amp myself up for battle, I just think about the most punchable face on the planet … Tucker Carlson,” James Vasquez tweeted last week.

Critics have accused Carlson, a Fox News host, of echoing Russian President Vladimir Putin’s talking points. Mother Jones reported that a leaked Kremlin war memo instructed Russian state media to feature him “as much as possible.”

Vasquez, a building contractor and former US Army staff sergeant from Connecticut, has gone viral due to his lively tweets on the Ukraine-Russia war.

He’s spent weeks sharing details with his more than 200,000 followers while serving voluntarily with Ukrainian forces. On his Twitter page, he’s described how he has helped to “take out” tanks and has bragged about capturing Russians.

“I kind of feel like I’m on an awesome very dangerous vacation,” said one tweet, summing up his time in Ukraine.

Retired US General Hertling’s guess as to what the Russian goals and plan were:

Goals:

The thread also goes over his analysis of the plan.

It’s an excellent plan unless the Ukes have been trained by the US since 2014 and have built a core of highly trained, motivated NCO’s to lead their troops so the Officer Corps can concentrate on tactics.

Sadly for the Russians, both of those “buts” are true. The Ukes have used their limited resources to build their Army into one based on the American model. And they are just waxing the Russian army.

We used to think the Russian Army was the second best in the world. Now, it’s the second best in Ukraine.

The Russian Army has starved its troops of a professional class of NCO’s. It has crippled itself, and there is no way they they can win without using “alternative weapons”.

That’s CBN, for the curious: Chemical, Biological, and Nuclear.

And if Putin thinks he’s gotta win this war or die of a sudden (instantaneous) case of lead poisoning, he just may reach for the Big Red Button.

And then we will see who really runs Russia.

Hopefully, he’ll back off, declare victory, and retreat, spending his capital on getting whatever he can in the Donbas.

But the Ukes have got their backs up, and don’t want to give them a gotdammed thing. And who can blame them? I’d spit in their collective faces and force them to pay for the rebuilding of everything they have blown up, plus death benefits.

Putin could not have fucked the puppy any worse than he has. It is a total omnishambles, a clusterfuck, a Del Rio dog fight.

Well that’s a complete fuck up, isn’t it?

What’s he going to do, send the Russian Navy out of Vladivostok to retake the Kuril Islands from the Japanese?

I thought they were pulling a “1905” in reverse, and sending units from their Pacific fleet to the Ukrainian theater?

Good f—-ing luck to them if they think that will help: the Black Sea is virtually landlocked: With only one inlet/outlet, which Russia does not control. Russian rulers for several centuries have tried to exert power in the region, only to be constrained by the geography. Vladimir Putin is just the latest to run up against the problem. And likely won’t have any more success….

Exactly correct. It came from the Afghanistan debacle. They decided that they couldn’t afford a professional NCO force and that they would have only officers and conscripts, going forward.

What we are looking at today is the result.

And I am off for the rack. Sweet scaly dreams.

Until Russian forces have left Ukraine and Putin has been deposed, I will not be celebrating Ukraine’s current success. As they say, it’s not over till it’s over and while the nation is being destroyed and its citizens are being slaughtered or huddling in cities under bombardment, it’s premature to assume that all will ultimately end well. I’ve never been an optimist, and Putin is someone who is willing to commit any crimes to achieve his goals; he will level Ukraine and kill all before conceding a defeat. After all, since Putin has gained power, he has never lost a fight; his forces have always emerged victorious.

The GOP is still in this country working to return to full power, obstructing Biden at every turn. Putin can ultimately achieve his victory through his army of traitors within our borders, seeking to destroy our democracy.

My wife has been watching Roadfood, a show with Misha Collins driving around the country meeting people and eating food. According to him, it’s a continuation of some books written by a man and woman by the same name documenting their discovery of food.

The episode that was on tonight was about Detroit. I’m sorry, as uplifting as it attempted to be, it was rather dystopian to me. He was visiting all of these people in the city that are growing gardens. One guy has taken over a number of old lots around him - the city is charging $100 per lot - and is growing a number of different kinds of vegetables. Another woman had a large greenhouse.

I will celebrate every day that the Ukrainian flag flies over Kyiv. The deaths are awful, and I am in no way trying to minimize them, but they’re a tiny fraction of what Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Germany, China, etc. Suffered in WW2.

Yes, the GOP are still dicks, but by and large they’ve backed strong actions against Russia, with many GOP Congress critters pushing Biden to do even more. Russian money will become toxic in politics for years; that’s a lot of money missing from the GOP and various right leaning PACs. Europe is largely united in the stand against Russia; I think that even Orban will come around once the elections are over next month.

Finally, although this is Putin’s fault, we (US, NATO, and Germany) allowed this to happen by not seeing the threat that Putin posed with clear eyes and acting aggressively sooner. I think that the world has largely woken up, and I take a bit of solace in that.

Let’s not forget who was in the White House 2017-2020. I expect there was plenty of clear thinking happening — and being suppressed by the policy makers at the time. And NATO has always been too eager to let the US take the lead (no matter how much they bitch about it). I hope the tfg experience has shown that they need contingency plans at least, in case another such leader takes power. The military buildup is a good start.

If you look at the actual votes and the rhetoric, it’s only half a dozen crazies that support Putin. And Tucker seems to be the only fan he has left on Fox. I think that Trump will distance himself from Putin. Trump doesn’t like losers, and Putin is looking more and more like a giant loser with each passing day. I still don’t trust the GOP in most things, but I think that the majority of them are on the right side of this.

For sure, but let’s not forget the reset button (that happened after Georgia), and the very anemic response after 2014 Crimea. Yes, Trump was an absolute disaster between inviting Lebanov to the WH, the Helsinki mess, clear skies, and blackmailing Zelensky, etc. But, the Obama White House did us no favors with regards to Putin; and I voted for the guy twice and donated to his campaign.

My belief is that Putin can not back down, he has no where to go “back”.

So if Putin can not give up Ukraine, the only option as long as Putin is in power is for Russia to drag out the war for a long time.

Perhaps years.

Perhaps a great many years.

We may be looking at the first significant departure from the 20th century paradigm of global inter-governmental order (the old but New World Order).

I suspect Putin thinks he can outlast any western foot stomping over Ukraine.

As the wheat thread (posted just up a few posts) pointed out, it is the Ukrainian wheat consumption which is at risk (not the world’s). All of Ukraine’s food production is at risk. The Ukrainians that are left in their country will get hungry. The rest of the world can donate food and supplies (medical, etc.) and that could go on for years too.

But for how long?

This was a tough one. Going 3 guesses like that had me very concerned. Not Susan Collins concerned, though.

Is any real person ever that concerned? Disappointed maybe but never concerned. Collins has a corner on that market.

I’m fine with opinion: conservative opinion, liberal opinion. But when people start to question the truth — Who won the 2020 election? Was Jan. 6 an insurrection? — I found that unsustainable.”

“Mr. Wallace also acknowledged that he felt a shift at Fox News in the months after Donald J. Trump’s defeat in 2020 — a period when the channel ended its 7 p.m. newscast, fired the political editor who helped project a Trump loss in Arizona on election night, and promoted hosts like Mr. Carlson who downplayed the Jan. 6 riot,” rawstory.com

He’s either lying or a clueless fuck if he didn’t see a shift before the 2020 election. He must have been asleep during the birther movement, the terrorist fist bump, the Obama hates white people, Soros controls the planet, etc, etc.

Taylor Hawkins had a well-known history of pretty extreme drug use, so bad it landed him in a coma once. I think the Post’s report is probably true. It’s a damned shame.

“The toxicology test on urine from Taylor Hawkins’ body preliminarily found 10 types of substances, including: THC, tricyclic antidepressants, benzodiazepines, and opioids,” the Attorney General’s Office of Colombia shared Saturday in a statement (translated from Spanish) on its Twitter account.

“The National Institute of Legal Medicine is continuing medical studies to completely clarify the cause of death for Taylor Hawkins,” continued the statement. The Attorney General’s office will also continue conducting its own investigation.

Yes, Trump was an absolute disaster between inviting Lebanov to the WH, the Helsinki mess, clear skies, and blackmailing Zelensky, etc. But, the Obama White House did us no favors with regards to Putin; and I voted for the guy twice and donated to his campaign.

Joe wasn’t in my top 10, but I did vote for him in the primaries because at that time the only viable alternative was Bernie, and he was even lower than Joe in my original list. Warren was my favorite but I knew she had no chance at the nomination and, in retrospect, at winning the election.

I’ll take some interior pics maybe today. The SiriusXM tuner is cool - digital display but the channels are in old fashioned tubes like you’d find on an amplifier.

We also drove the Niro - it’s their less pricey EV - it doesn’t have the on demand punch that the EV6 has, but if your mom is looking for a comfortable around town car it will definitely do the trick.

Somehow we went from total acceptance in the media (looking at you CBS) for any dumb idea Trump pulled right out of his ass to microscopic scrutiny of every word, every step. every breath.

Looks like the suspicions about Hawkins were right. From the LA Times:

Taylor Hawkins, the drummer for multiplatinum rock band Foo Fighters, had an assortment of drugs in his system when he died Friday, Colombian authorities said.

An initial forensic medical examination and urine toxicology report of the musician’s body revealed 10 substances in his system, including THC (marijuana), tricyclic antidepressants, benzodiazepines and opioids, according to a statement from the Colombian attorney general’s office Saturday via Twitter.

Emergency services responded to a call of a patient with chest pains at the Four Seasons Hotel Casa Medina Bogota on Friday. Hawkins was found dead in the hotel room, the authorities said. A spokesman for Foo Fighters was not immediately available for comment.

I would trade you for some of that. It’s already 79 here and the high will get into the upper 80s.

I was raised nominally Methodist. We stopped attending church when I was in second grade. Both my parents were teachers, and they went on strike. Needless to say, this wasn’t very popular with most of the town folk. One Sunday morning my mother declared that she was not attending a church where people bad-mouthed her all week and were like “peace be with you” on Sunday. We basically became the Christmas/Easter Christians when we attended church with grandparents.

All of that said, one thing this former-Methodist did learn about was commie Jesus feeding the poor and healing the sick. Although, I suspect the current members of the church my family left oh so long ago would agree with Justin “God loves me and not you” Bull-shits-a- ton.

When this was mentioned here yesterday the first thing I thought of was the death of Michael K Williams (aka Omar from the Wire) where his drugs were laced with fentanyl. Fucking addiction (like fucking cancer) robs so many people. And like cancer, there’s a certain about of luck in whether or not a person beats the disease.

I had to laugh today. My parents’ new church got a new associate pastor. He preached the same sermon I’ve preached for years, speaking directly to the Parable of the Good Samaritan, like: Your neighbor might be a different race. (As an example; he had many similar points, all boiling down to, “Rethink your idea of neighbor to be someone that makes you uncomfortable to help, then help them anyway.”) I have to wonder if any of those people ever heard a sermon like that before. It was thoroughly refreshing. Maybe there’s hope for my folks after all.

I expect you also voted for the Sec’y of State who gave Lavrov the reset button.

At the time I lived in an uncontested state and voted 3rd party. If I had been in a swing state I would have voted for her, while holding my nose.

30 F here in western PA and snow for the last day or so appears to be done. About 1-2” accumulation on the car. (Which has been swept off.) Supposed to stay chilly for the next day or two.

Neighbor’s cat at the former apartment has been accused of attacking a dog that was being walked in the parking lot. This is the same cat that chased Floof Cat.

Including the morning I opened the door and the cat was sitting on the stoop. He raced in, went partway up the stairs and had a hissing match for a few seconds with Floof Cat (who was at the top of the stairs). He turned around and raced out when I yelled at him.

He just doesn’t like other cats, and small dogs apparently. Perfectly sociable and approachable with people.

You can criticize catholics, but on this they’re way better than protestants.

“I’m saved/born again” is blasphemy. God decides, not you.
