I’m curious what all of you think about the laws regarding charging someone with homicide for the death of a fetus or double homicide when a pregnant woman dies.

This person reported that Sen. Cramer’s statement was false - but that was only based on a spokesperson’s statement later.

This reporter actually heard Cramer say it, and stands by her reporting:

They are all bullshit - a sophist argument to “support” their unsupported claims of fetus personhood and to prevent women from using their rights they do have through fear.

I’d feel more confident if multiple reporters confirmed hearing that statement or if there were a tape. While you cannot believe a spokesperson for a politician or a politician’s own denial, it is also possible for a reporter to mishear a statement or misinterpret it.

I think it’s a massive can of worms that they’re ultimately going to regret opening. The amount of time and energy they’re going to have to spend carving out exceptions for everything they want to protect from the inevitable efforts to hold accountable for everything from miscarriages to accidental death is going to far outweigh whatever little glee they feel in establishing “personhood.”

It’s going to end up being a battle between the two wings of the party, because while the Trumpers would just want to write a one line “Any acts that lead to the death of an unborn baby shall be illegal!!!,” the corporate wing is not gonna want their buddies breaking down their doors because of the wide latitude that’s gonna give prosecutors to go after…well…everyone.

I know I’ve posted this before, but seems appropriate here and now.

From 20fucking12.

“At least 38 states have introduced fetal homicide laws that were intended to be used against violent attacks by third parties like abusive male partners. But in South Carolina, only one case has been brought against a man for assaulting a pregnant woman, while up to 300 women have been arrested under the law, according to the National Advocates for Pregnant Women.”

I feel her pain. I’m incredibly sheltered in terms of actually having to deal with Republicans. The only one I know of in my personal life does part time work at a business I’m a partner in, and there is an agreement all around on no political discussions on the job (if in mixed political company). That plus the balance of power being in my favor keeps things civilized.

On the other hand Sen. Hirono has 50 Republican “colleagues” who basically want her dead just because she isn’t a wingnut.

37
Targetpractice  May 5, 2022 • 9:43:24pm

Think about it this way: You’re the CEO of a chemical company that supplies (among other things) a lot of chemicals used in household cleaning products that are in houses across the nation. Then a state government announces they’re gonna pass a “personhood” law that makes even contributing to the death of a “baby” an unlawful act. Well, you know that several products you’re involved in the making of that have been shown in your test labs to increase chances of miscarriage in pregnant women.

You don’t think they’re gonna have their lobbyists visiting the offices of every “holier-than-thou” Bible-thumper in that state government, whispering in their ear to exempt chemical companies from that new law?

That bolded part is GOP lies. Perhaps some centrist naifs were taken in by this crap, but realistically the US justice system is already capable of being punitive vs. people that assault pregnant women (or worse). Being punitive is the only thing the system is good at.

So we have a wingnut ‘solution’ to a non-problem. Of course it’s only going to be used against women.

The far-right has insisted for decades that the 2A is an absolute right and the only persons responsible for gun crimes are the people holding the gun, yet gun companies spend billions annually lobbying lawmakers and paying lawyers to write new laws and twist existing ones respectively in order to avoid their entire industry collapsing under the payouts that a single successful liability lawsuit would bring.

Windows 7 was, for me the first windows series that I did not feel I had to reboot on a daily or sooner basis to not have it lock up or crash.

Big Tobacco was untouchable for decades, until it wasn’t. May the same happen for the gun makers. Their contributions to the GOP cesspit of treason should not go unrewarded. Piercing the corporate veil to seize all ill-gotten gains from all past and present senior executives, and from their estates, would be an appropriate way to celebrate that blessed day.

I guess that I have never felt that Collins (or Murkowski) was stupid, or snookered in any way. I have always assumed that she knew exactly what she was doing and why. And that she was quite happy to lie continually if it suited her goals.

Realistically, the Win95 and Vista suffered from the same issues, namely not wanting to play nice with a lot of legacy programs and having poor driver support. The former suffered more because those were the days when you still had to tweak settings on everything just to run a single program, while the latter suffered from Microsoft not really giving software and hardware companies enough time and info to properly support it right out of the box. Both matured into decent OSes, it’s just by the time they got there, the damage to their reputations had already been done.

These days, visits to even the Kroger pharmacy to buy cough syrup requires me to pick up a little card with a bar code to take to wait in line, then fork over my ID at the counter so that the barcode on the back can be scanned into their system to log my purchase for tracking purposes.

Contraceptives and pregnancy tests will face the same treatment and for the same reason: “We need to keep track of this information to make sure people aren’t doing anything…unlawful.”

This famous marketing story:

Every time you go shopping, you share intimate details about your consumption patterns with retailers. And many of those retailers are studying those details to figure out what you like, what you need, and which coupons are most likely to make you happy. Target , for example, has figured out how to data-mine its way into your womb, to figure out whether you have a baby on the way long before you need to start buying diapers.

Iirc, that IBM PC-XT system new was almost $5k when it first came out back in the early 1980’s. ANd on the Windows/DOS side about all it could be used for was low grade word processing and the spreadsheet application (?Lotus 123?). The business school folks in particular really jumped at the spreadsheet.

I tried like hell to buy two flip phones today. Part of why I hate change is I’m no good at it. Three ‘chats’ on the website got cut off. My third visit to the brick and mortar franchise outlet was the least helpful. The online sales people are competitors with the in-store people. Takes more time to sell a flip phone, for a much smaller commission, so incentive is lacking.

Didn’t seem like it at the time but looking back? I can’t remember how much I had to cough up for that XT at the pawn but it had to be cheap. Yeah. I got enough knowledge to get a part time job helping a SCO Xenix integrator install systems while flunking out of Tech School (did get to learn BSD there and did COBAL (ugh) on an ATT 3B1) That in turn got me enough technobabble to get into a position with the State of Wisconsin running a Real Unix system on Data General and Sun hardware.

I remember SCO Xenix as being reasonably solid on the pc. Which I found, after using windows, quite surprising. Never was able to get into it much as I wanted, though.

I worked at a bank about 25 years ago. And they were still using COBOL. All of the banking systems had been written in COBOL 30-40 years before. The systems had been tested and validated for many years. And had not changed much since then. IBM had a huge team of consultants to support the systems. And was still upgrading and modernizing hardware.

Like you, I preferred the Unix world far better.

Prior to the banking gig I worked for GTE Telenet, developing security applications for their data network. I worked there through the renaming as Sprint. Then we got sold to a French company and went bankrupt.

After the banking gig, I went to a job with General Dynamics. (Motto: We may not be specifically so; But we are generally dynamic.) We used pc systems and windows networking.

Around this time there was a lot of Linux companies opening local DC offices to support govt contracts. I knew some Red Hat folks, but the work they were doing did not really interest me.

Don’t worry too much if you are a CEO, for chrissakes, laws like those are only to further control and chastise bad women who dot fully accept the grace of God’s gift of pregnancy (even if it is the product of rape or incest)

Lucky Charms also had issues as well. I hope our food supply is safe.

Desperate parents across the United States are struggling to get their hands on baby formula amid a nationwide shortage as major national retailers have enforced rationing and one website charged up to $800 for the precious tins following a recall on popular products after an infant died of an infection.

In the week ending April 24, CBS News reports, 40 to 50 percent of the top-selling baby formula products were out of stock at stores across the country, according to an analysis from Datasembly, which tracked baby formula stock at more than 11,000 retailers.

National out-of-stock levels jumped nine percentage points from 31 percent to 40 percent between April 3 and April 24, according to an analysis from Datasembly.

It only got worse in February, when Abbott Labs first announced a recall of certain Alimentum, Similac and EleCare formulas after five infants who used the formula contracted a Cronobacter sakazakii infection, which can cause severe blood infections and meningitis. One of the infants died as a result.

But can we call it the same currency? Are there not still restrictions on trading it?

The USSR had that as well: there were currency and non-currency rubles, which had the same nominal value but were non-convertible, even with each other.

Non-currency rubles were simply how (state-owned) firms recorded their transactions with other (state-owned) firms. Company could not simply cash them out, they belonged to the state.

And in order to be able to convert Rubles to dollars, you had to obtain a license for a particular amount.

Germans love cash transactions and vehemently oppose any plans to switch to electronic currency. For that, 50 and even 100-euro notes are not uncommon in circulation.

The only thing restraining Roberts from being a pseudo-religious shithead like the other 5 is that his legacy as Chief Justice of the Court seems to be the most important thing to him, and he is doing what he can to keep the others from shitting all over it. Unfortunately for us ordinary Americans, he’s failing spectacularly.

He cannot control which people are appointed to serve with him.

The last batch of appointees were put there to overturn Roe v Wade. That should have been clear from the outset.

The GOP was happy to maintain and pretend that it was not the case, while nodding and winking to their Fundie base, and the rest of us just couldn’t believe the level of outright cynical bastardy they could and would impose on us.

The husband did it, the husband always does.

Barry Morphew insisted that he still loves his missing wife Suzanne and demanded that the authorities find her in his first TV interview since murder charges against him were dropped.

The Colorado father appeared on Good Morning America with his two adult daughters on Friday. He said: ‘I just love my girls and I love my wife and I want her to be found.’
Suzanne Morphew vanished on Mother’s Day 2020 after going out for a bike ride. Her body has never been found, but authorities believe it may be buried in a hillside in Colorado, submerged by snow.

Barry was charged with her murder. As the case against him progressed, authorities revealed intimate details about their life.

Suzanne had been having an affair with someone she met in high school, while Barry was signed up to online affair websites.

Police said the pair had a tumultuous marriage, with the suggestion being that he might have killed her out of jealousy or to stop her from filing for a divorce.

But last month, the charges were suddenly dropped without prejudice by Assistant District Attorney Linda Stanley in the wake of police discovering what they thought could be Suzanne’s body.

Rupert Murdoch’s talkTV television channel has been rated as having “zero viewers” during primetime broadcasts, as the new television channel struggles to attract an audience despite signing up Piers Morgan as a presenter.

The News Desk, the channel’s hour-long political show hosted by Tom Newton Dunn, did not register a single viewer for half of its Tuesday evening broadcast. Although this does not rule out the possibility that some people were watching somewhere in the UK, it means the television audience was so small that it was not picked up by official rating agency, the Broadcasters’ Audience Research Board.

The other movie? Dirty Dancing. Baby has to fill in with Johnny, because his partner nearly died in a back-room abortion. Baby’s dad (Jerry Orbach) saves her life.

So, the way to quick-caption Dirty Dancing: Young woman helps save a woman who was victim of a botched back-alley abortion; dances the night away.

Cider House Rules was substantially about abortion.

If confirmed, it appears the fires are focused around the vertical rocket launch cells aft of the forward gun. If those missiles cook off, that could end the ship. The rocket launch cells can carry the SS-N-27 missiles. There’s also an anti-sub rocket launcher forward of the bridge that may also be involved.

Each of those SS-N-27 missiles carries up to 500kg of high explosives, plus fuel.

Technically, those missiles can also be tipped with nuclear weapons.

The end goal is to “return” to an American version of an idealized Old Testament. There are no boundaries for such an endeavor and every granted Constitutional right is on the table for attack and repeal.

A dedicated pocket of Conservatives have long dreamed of returning to an essentially pre-Medieval Late- Bronze Age Law and family code and they are finally executing their plan. There are no boundaries - polygamy, family honor killings, warlord and large landowner rule (corrupt local Sheriffs and mayors), slavery, father’s ownership of wives, women and girls, public executions of gays, Debtors’ prisons, this and much more on on the table for “Libertarian” ideals. I’ve dealt with this mindset since college in the mid-80’s. I know it, I’ve heard it and it has only grown on the internet since then.

All that spectacle and the reality is that the Putin imperialist war against Ukraine is going really badly and no amount of saber rattling will change that.

I need to learn to make corn tortillas. They are nearly impossible to find in Germany (flour tortillas, on the other hand, no problem, just go to the Turkish supermarket)

A buddy recently brought some over from Finland (where you can get them in most supermarkets) and we used them to make green chili/chicken enchiladas for Cinco de Mayo.

How to Make Corn Tortillas

This recipe for homemade corn tortillas only requires two ingredients and tastes better than anything you can buy at the store. These corn tortillas are also gluten-free and can be used for tacos, quesadillas, and more!

” It [the ICC] lacks universal territorial jurisdiction and may only investigate and prosecute crimes committed within member states, crimes committed by nationals of member states, or crimes in situations referred to the Court by the United Nations Security Council. “

Ukraine is not a signatory. Russia is not a signatory. The UN security council will not refer crimes in Ukraine to the ICC.

George W. Bush relegated the ICC to its current role of “prosecuting African dictators that it would be embarrassing or expensive to do at home”.

Then the ICC prosecutors chamber wouldn’t be investigating war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide in the current conflict and going back to the 2014 invasion of Luhansk and Donetsk. And they have opened a preliminary inquiry into precisely that. Meaning that what they suspect has happened is so big they can ignore non-signatory status.

The FBI has quietly pulled the security clearances of some employees who attended protests before last year’s Capitol riot, The Post has learned.
It’s unclear how many FBI employees are impacted. However, Jordan’s letter says multiple FBI employees have been affected. He also claims the Justice Department inspector general “is now examining whether the FBI’s actions violate federal civil service laws.”

Jordan wrote that the yanking of security clearances would effectively terminate employees, even if they are not charged with criminal wrongdoing linked to the riot.

“Because a security clearance is required for FBI positions, the suspension of the security clearance means the FBI has suspended these employees from work indefinitely. Such a suspension is likely to be the first step in terminating employment,” Jordan wrote.

A few questions for the anti abortion GOPers in Congress esp. since states are pushing personhood amendments, and blanket bans on abortion nationwide.

1. How does the census handle the fetus if they’re a person for purposes of homicide statutes.

2. How must insurers treat the fetus if there’s a miscarriage given that they are a life in being.

Feel free to add your own…

Roberts isn’t the one who makes the assignment if he’s not in the majority.

After the votes have been tallied, the Chief Justice, or the most senior Justice in the majority if the Chief Justice is in the dissent, assigns a Justice in the majority to write the opinion of the Court

So Thomas may be running the court now.

I know a lot of the Catholics and Evangelicals like to talk about the “innocent” baby, but for a difficult pregnancy, under Jewish law it’s NOT an innocent. It’s a pursuer (yes, that’s the legal term) and everybody else, especially doctors and midwives, are duty-bound to do whatever is in their power to protect the woman from that pursuer.

290
steve_davis  May 6, 2022 • 10:11:04am

in all seriousness, overturning roe may wind up being a kind of blessing in disguise. it was always a compromise: “legal for three months, then maybe legal in certain circumstances.” Now we finally get to explore, do we want to live in a world where a fetus has personhood? If ultimately we get legislation indicating that no, a fetus is not a person, then maybe we finally get out from under the debate.

Right. And I am of the opinion that since this is ultimately a *religious* belief about the status of the fetus being forced on people who have different religious beliefs, that all of this should be attacked under the First Amendment. Put these asshats on the spot on how they don’t give a damn about the Constitution. While at the same time assisting pregnant people with whatever help they need.

Decades ago there was a tremendously detailed website from the Federation of American Scientists. It was focused on National Security/Department of Defense issues. It included a large section on Agricultural Defense programs like Daedalus. Someone was thinking way ahead.

(Think they might have morphed into globalsecurity.com.)

Org rather than .com globalsecurity.org
It is indeed the old crowd from FAS, including John Pike, who used to make lots of tv appearances back when the nutworks at least pretended to value real expertise. My favorite though is Charles Vick, chief technical analyst. Back during the Cold War Mr. Vick, a private citizen, used open sources and personal contacts to reach astoundingly accurate conclusions about the Soviet space program and rocketry. These were often at odds with official speculation but were vindicated after the Soviet Union collapsed and hard facts became available in the west
He produced accurate drawings of the failed N-1 Moon rocket and was the first western analyst to determine that it had 30 first stage engines. He was also the first analyst to speculate publicly that the “Proton’ (D-1) heavy booster had originally been designed as a giant ICBM to lob a 100MT warhead at the United States. Officials scoffed at this (D was equivalent to the Saturn I) but it, too, was later confirmed.
