re: #313 No Malarkey!

This is actually the correct ruling, because he will go on trial for what he did on January 6, not for being Nazi scum. I mean, if you were on a jury trying a Nazi, it would be hard not to convict him just as a matter of principle.

Thus taking away an avenue of appeal for the defense: “Your Honor, I move for a mistrial because evidence that my client is a Nazi unfairly prejudiced the jury against him, instead of convicting him on the merits of the prosecution’s case.”

re: #4 No Malarkey!

Excellent point.

Judges try to rule as favorably to the defense as is practicable, specifically for this reason. If the judge has been as lenient as he/she can, and the jury STILL convicts them, then there are a lot less reasons the conviction can be appealed, and probably none that will be upheld.

Right-wing authoritarians want to feel like they’re right about everything without understanding anything, or even slightly engaging critical thinking skills. They’ll engage in advanced mental-gymnastics to try to justify themselves, and it’s going to get a lot worse before it gets better.

Things that were deeply rooted in US history:

Slavery
Treating women as chattel property with no rights or agency over their bodies

All of those things are prima facie evil and cruel.

The problem with consistency is that it sets your dog’s internal clock. Over the pandemic, since I was home working remotely, I tended to give the dog a puzzle treat and play at 3PM. Now she’s like toddler. She pushes through the door AT 3PM (it doesn’t close well unless purposefully pulled shut) and just shimmies and whines until I do the treat and play. If I shut the door she sniffs and clacks her claws against the floor passive aggressively.

Seriously, though, I should change up the routine. We’re going to have to board her for several days in August where things won’t be on our routine. Less stress that way.

I kind of expected this, to be honest. After Mr. Dunford explained that he doesn’t think this administrative hearing was the best place to litigate Margarine Tater-Greens’s status as an actual insurrectionist, I figured it would be denied. Realistically, the way to get this to happen would be to get her expelled from the House, or at least charged with seditious conspiracy. That might still come out later, but until then, I can’t say specifically that a judge should find adequate cause to have her removed from the ballot.

Lives will be lost regardless. We can’t sterilize every fertile woman who doesn’t want a child at this time.

For women who don’t want children, sterilization is a safe and common option. But following the leaked Supreme Court decision, it’s taken on a new sense of direness and urgency

Pseudonymous gas station clerk Eleanor is just 20, but she knows that she never wants children. “I have a lot of trauma from my childhood, and from how my mother treated me,” she tells me. “I wouldn’t want to risk continuing that cycle of abuse.” So, for the last few years, she’s been researching sterilization procedures, specifically a salpingectomy — an operation in which one or both of the fallopian tubes are removed. But it wasn’t until earlier this week, when a leaked draft revealed that the Supreme Court had voted to overturn Roe v. Wade — the landmark 1973 ruling that made safe, legal abortion a constitutional right — that Eleanor finally decided to try and book an appointment with a gynecologist.

“I’m terrified of having to go through pregnancy,” she explains. “If women aren’t already sterile or don’t get sterilized as soon as possible, lives are going to be lost.”

CONCERNED ABOUT ROE, THESE WOMEN ARE TURNING TO STERILIZATION (MelMagazine, which seems to be yelling at us, which is fair considering the context.)

Generalizations about misogyny in various cultures are often lacking. All cultures, that I know of, contain forms of misogyny and racism, and other bigotries. All cultures have the ability to change.

The right wing has often had members telling other members to ‘welcome the Hispanics, they have deep-seated values like our own, from the church’. Most Hispanic culture in the SW US comes from Mexico. In Mexico, they had a couple of revolutions. (Some priests were leaders.) This is from 1991, things may have changed:

Under the constitution in 1917, which is still in effect, nuns and priests are forbidden to join political parties, vote or wear clerical garb in public. The constitution banned parochial primary schools and religious ceremonies outside church buildings.

Mexico recently made abortion legal. The medication version is over-the-counter.

re: #63 Dopamine Fish

I kind of expected this, to be honest. After Mr. Dunford explained that he doesn’t think this administrative hearing was the best place to litigate Margarine Tater-Greens’s status as an actual insurrectionist, I figured it would be denied. Realistically, the way to get this to happen would be to get her expelled from the House, or at least charged with seditious conspiracy. That might still come out later, but until then, I can’t say specifically that a judge should find adequate cause to have her removed from the ballot.

IANAL, of course, but this ruling comes as no surprise to me; trying to disqualify MTG (however big a disgrace that idiot actually may be) on 14th-Amendment grounds - the first time I can recall that particular part of the Constitution being invited in any legal proceeding- always seemed to be a bit of a stretch. Especially as her involvement in that “insurrection” (unlike, say, Robert E. Lee) was legally unproven. Even if obvious to us….
To me, the worst aspect of the ruling is going to be Greene’s self-congratulatory gloating over her “vindication”….

Pompeo has lost something like 90 pounds. He claims to have done it in six months with just a healthy diet and 30 minutes of daily exercise.
Everyone else believes it was surgery.

Eh, I’ve lost over 100 lbs since october with nothing but changing my diet. Amazing what a couple weeks in the hospital can do to motivate lifestyle changes.

Lives will be lost regardless. We can’t sterilize every fertile woman who doesn’t want a child at this time.

CONCERNED ABOUT ROE, THESE WOMEN ARE TURNING TO STERILIZATION (MelMagazine, which seems to be yelling at us, which is fair considering the context.)

Do you know how HARD it is for a fertile woman under age 40 (and sometimes not even then) to get sterilized? Absent some other reason, it’s very, very difficult. One of my relatives tried to get sterilized, but she was just under 30. It wasn’t going to be allowed, so she basically told her husband he was getting a vasectomy and he did.

I’m just hoping that it gets better before the country is torn into 50 scraps of paper because one party has divorced itself of a semblance of reality and just doesn’t give a fuck. You cannot maintain a stable government unless everyone has the same understanding of what’s real and what’s fantasy.

A woman in Texas who unknowingly bought an ancient Roman bust at Goodwill for $35 actually purchased a sculpture that went missing during World War II in Germany.

According to the San Antonio Museum of Art, art collector Laura Young initially found the sculpture underneath a table in 2018 at a Goodwill store in Austin.

Noticing that the bust was old and worn, she began researching to determine its authenticity and origin.

The museum said Young met with art history experts from the University of Texas at Austin and from several auction houses before a Sotheby’s consultant identified the work and connected her with German authorities.

After examining the sculpture, experts determined not only that it once belonged in the collection of King Ludwig I of Bavaria, it dated from the late first century B.C. or first century A.D.

Young said, “there were a few months of intense excitement” after learning its history.

How it got to Texas remains a mystery, but experts believe a soldier in Aschaffenburg, Germany, after the war may have brought it back to the states.

The sculpture will remain on display at the museum until 2023, when it is returned to Germany.
