DOWN THE HALL
(Bonnie Raitt)

Had the flu in the prison infirmary
My last day I looked up and saw
A man wheeled round the corner
Down to skin and bones that’s all

I asked the nurse where he was goin’
She said ‘hospice down the hall.,
He prob’ly won’t be in there long
Any day we’ll get the call’

I asked if they let family in
She said ‘not really at the end
Truth is, a lot don’t have someone
No friends or next of kin’

The thought of those guys goin’ out alone
It hit me somewhere deep
I asked could I go sit with ‘em
For some comfort and relief?

Next thing you know, I’m on the ward
Doin’ things you can’t believe
Like shavin’ Julio’s bony head
Crackin’ him up when I wash his feet

I used to run when I saw Tyrone
Knowin’ your place’s what it’s all about
Now he’s here doubled up in pain
Cancer eatin’ him from the inside out

I sit and wait outside his stall
To help him when he’s done
Whatever shame we might have felt,
Well, all that’s come undone

I can’t undo the wrong I did
Give back the life I took
But maybe when it comes my turn
I’ll get a second look

I don’t know ‘bout religion
I only know what I see
And in the end when I hold their hand
It’s both of us set free

When I say Alito’s opinion would be the Dredd Scott decision of the 21st century, I mean it literally. Women have virtually no constitutional rights a white man is bound to respect under Alito’s opinion.

I pretty much agree with him. Focus on the public places like churches or government buildings, and even companies. You’re not going to scare a judge into doing what you want.

A friend recommends a “Cobrador del Frac: Very useful, a conscience. It is someone who stands and stares at a person who owes a debt. It originated in Spain , I believe. A figure in black follows the individual who owes , not necessarily money, could be, but more likely for a grievance against someone who cannot get justice through usual means. It is completely passive . The Cobrador stands and stares at the person , maybe waits outside their house, till the person pays the debt however it must be paid, whether money or honor or whatever form the grievance caused . They are a constant reminder the some kind of debt is owed.”

Though Pure Land Buddhism is far and away the most widely-practiced form of Buddhism in East Asia, it is still relatively unknown in the Western world (outside of East Asian diaspora communities). The Buddhist Churches of America, the American branch of Jōdo Shinshū, with its main temple the Nishi Hongan-ji located in Kyoto, is a good representative of Pure Land Buddhism that can be found in the USA (and with a few such temples in the EU as well).

I disagree, and that’s because the Supreme Court is legally off limits to protesting. You will be arrested if you protest on the “front porch” of the Court; it is a crime. Plus they’ve put up 10 foot fences. PLUS the Court has ruled in the past (2014) that a 35 foot buffer zone around abortion clinics was unconstitutional. *PLUS* it’s my goddamned body they’re going to regulate, and if these asshats are going to do that, then it is MY RIGHT to stand on the public sidewalk and remind them what the right to privacy actually means.

Being nice is not going to help us right now, these people are hellbent on pushing us back to terrible times. They must understand what exactly that means.

13

Also:

This is NOT the time to be nice. Just standing on these Justices’ sidewalks is annoying and inconvenient, but when our rights are going to be stripped from us, fuck that noise.

I wonder why no other country has announced building a car chip plant.

Silicon fab plants exist all around the world. However Germany is not strong in that area.

Some companies specialize and the reality is that many products are made in China.

I suspect that Germany’s concern may arise from relationships their major manufacturers may have with suppliers in China.

Calls for civility are duplicitous: the confer control while at the same time adding pretext for more verbal aggression, which builds a pretext for physical aggression. The right’s judicial wing is going all in coordinated with state and local wingnuts goaded by ‘think tanks’ and advocacy groups (dark money ideologues).

That’s the most important question!

If there is not some radical change in Russia, Putin has demonstrated that he will simply wait a while and then do it again.

I have seen a lot of hints that there are numerous ongoing discussions among subject matter experts and policy gurus about this.

For example, what does Ukraine need for peace. A truce with everything else unchanged may simply give Putin the time to rearm. And then he can start up the war again when it is convenient to him.

Good. Now the fanatics can spend thousands of dollars a week on security, as they have openly forced abortion providers to do for years. Back in 2013, I commented on the security guards who worked at the only abortion provider in Lubbock. I have re-posted it several times since. I have recently learned that the same mob of fanatics also demonstrated outside the offices of the security contractor itself, as though the abortion provider had no right to be protected from violence.
The clinic is closed now.

I was living in Forth Worth in the nineties when Flip Benham and Operation Rescue were protesting in front of homes of doctors who performed abortions in the suburbs of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.

As far as I’m concerned, every goddamned forced-birther judge and legislator should be subject to the very same harassment, fear, and danger that every woman who seeks to exercise their bodily autonomy to terminate an unwanted pregnancy, along with the attendant medical personnel, clinic staff, security guards, and clinic escorts, face on a daily basis.

The cultural right wing have effectively declared open warfare on the intrinsic human rights to personal bodily and reproductive autonomy and they’re not going to stop there. Civility doesn’t end wars. This dogged pursuit of civility results in the victory of oppressors and the subjugation of the oppressed.

There is a time and a place for respectability politics, and there’s a time to toss respectability politics out the window.

Trekkie here. That’s not really what the show suggested.

For decades now, in the official Star Trek timeline, earth basically started going to shit in the early to mid 21st century. This culminated with a Third World War that killed 600 million and damn near wiped some countries completely off the map.

As mankind was struggling to rebuild in the years after the war, a guy named Zefram Cochrane created the warp engine, allowing humans to travel faster than light. This caused the Vulcans to arrive on earth to say “hello”. Upon realizing we are not alone in the universe, humanity finally gets its act together and the peaceful futuristic earth seen in many of the Star Trek shows is born.

Basically, they used Jan 6 to fit into the narrative of things going to hell ahead of the Third World War. They did NOT imply it was a direct cause of the conflict.

Oh, and Strange New Worlds is awesome. Seriously. The best Trek show I’ve watched in a while.

Watching what was shown I can see that argument being made. If we don’t get back on track it _will_ lead to a loss of democracy and the various wars that lead us to WWIII. That’s the same kind of writing as the original ST talking about orbital nuclear weapons platforms in space ahead of Apollo 11.

How does SNW compare to Prodigy? That’s been my favorite of the newest Treks. After I get back from my trip to Memphis this month, I plan to restart the Paramount+ streaming service but I need to save my $$$ till then.

Yeah this was an implication that shit going awry in the US started a avalanche of bullshit that eventually resulted in WW3. Star Trek flips back and forth over whether the Eugenics Wars and WW3 are the same conflict, related, or completely separate. It also has flipped over WW3 being a full blown nuclear holocaust in “one day” vs a long drawn out conventional war that went partially nuclear a couple of times before people said STOP.

This implication of problems in the US screwing up the whole world isn’t unrealistic and we are seeing it somewhat now. This is precisely why Russia has been doing a full court press information war on the US and EU for 20 years intended to tear us apart. I can tell you this: If there’s a civil war in the US that lasts longer than a day and is a shooting war, every bad actor who’s slightly afraid of the US military or NATO is going to pull a Putin. That is when China will invade Taiwan (assuming China exists at the time), that is when there will be a mushroom cloud over one or more middle eastern cities. That is when, if Russia hasn’t fallen apart because of Ukraine, and gets it’s shit together in a bad way instead of a good way that they will march into the Baltics, and the rest of eastern Europe. That is when North Korea will stop popping off missiles into the ocean and start trying to drop them in Seoul and Japan.

Keeping the Republicans out of power is literally stopping the downfall of civilization at this point, and I don’t think I’m exaggerating here.

I posted earlier about my son’s robotics team going to a world competition in Dallas last week. Picked him up this afternoon and he had some controversial things to say. First, he has never done very much of the build or driving. He was the programmer. I kind of knew that, but thought he had also helped at least with build. Second, he said that build is overrated. The goals are defined by the organizers (VEX) and therefore isn’t much variation in the robots and the strategies are all the same, so; third, it’s terrifically boring to watch. He said he longed to leave the facility and walk around the town. Fourth, California dominates and has for years (draw your own inferences as to why). And the controversial one: even though he’s considered Asian himself by our census and he tends to gravitate toward the small Asian-American community at his school of nearly 4000 students, he said “the best teams were all Indian-American and Chinese-American teams from California and when we interacted I found them so single-minded on robotics that I couldn’t really talk to them; they had no personality beyond the competition.” But, the said a highlight was partnering with a team from Khazakhstan, which were very accomplished and fun.
Anyway, proud of him and his team for making the final rounds. But also happy that he’s gaining self-understanding about what he values.

ETA: he had good things to say about the Chinese Taipei teams. He said they were way above everyone else.

Too much melanin is all it takes.

It’s particularly absurd in the case of Doctor Who, a being that is not even human.

Sure, in some versions of Doctor Who he/she had a human mother - that again is one of those Jesus-substitute ideas that are embedded in the character - but there has never been a backstory on who that woman was.

So in this case there is an alien, who often acts recklessly and thus gets mortally injured and thus has to reincarnate. A process that has been well established to include quite a bit of randomness.

You’ll know it’s really bad when they run out of Mosins and start issuing Berdan’s to the conscripts.

Horses and bayonets to follow not long after.

Enjoyed some time with my wife and mother of our children. Observing plants is the perfect way to move deliberately along a trail - not going too fast or slow. So many flowers in bloom to discover and numerous bees hanging out among the Mariposa Lilies. Santa Monica Mountains. If you like the image - view it on flickr - no image compression - looks even better. flic.kr

This is 100% into too good to be true territory.

If picked up be respectable media I might give it some credit.

Respectable media think Catalonia is an island 26 miles off the California coast.

Using Ukrainians to fight for them keeps official casualties lower since they aren’t Russian.

Any bayoneted rifle is adequate to kill your commander at close range.

JFC!
Issuing the Moisin-Nagant rifle to frontline troops in 2022?
What happened? Did they run out of muzzle-loaders?

William Lewis mentioned that he used a 1938-vintage Mosinka as a hunting rifle a few threads back: does he know it’s now cutting-edge weaponry??

That was me, and it was at least as good a shootin’ iron as an M1903. Good meat rifle.

Venison tastes good.
