Little Shop of Horrors: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert

I admit I thought this might be cringe-worthy, but ended up enjoying it way more than I thought I would.

The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music’s Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It’s the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.

Josh Rogosin | May 6, 2022
Composer Alan Menken beams with pride as he introduces the Little Shop of Horrors Tiny Desk (home) concert. May 6, 2022 marks the 40th anniversary of the show’s first production. Menken is joined by the stellar cast of the current off-Broadway revival, which swept the Drama Desk, Outer Critics and Drama League Awards for Best Musical Revival. They perform a joyful medley of five earworm-filled tunes from the cult classic. Over the course of the tiny concert, Menken shares anecdotes about collaborating with the show’s late lyricist Howard Ashman. It’s obvious how much they loved working together hearing him reminisce.

It may come as a surprise when the composer sits down at the piano to sing “Somewhere That’s Green,” one of the most iconic songs usually performed by the show’s female lead. It’s a melody he admits you might recognize from The Little Mermaid. “This is one of the first songs Howard and I wrote for Little Shop,” Menken explains. “It’s kind of the classic ‘I want’ song, a phrase that Howard [Ashman] would use a lot, especially when we would talk endlessly about our Disney movies. … When we wrote ‘Part of Your World’ we actually jokingly called it ‘Somewhere That’s Wet.’” Good artists copy; great artists steal (from themselves, if they’re smart).

The joy the cast shares while performing these wonderful songs with their composer is palpable. If you find yourself planning a trip to New York, do yourself a favor and book tickets to this heartfelt production, which should run at the Westside Theatre for a long time to come.

One of the main characters in The Great North is gay. Today’s episode had him feeling a little down because his announcement to his family didn’t get much of a reaction (as his dad said later, he didn’t want the reaction to be seen as negative, especially since they all knew before then), so the family and his boyfriend went to go find and estranged aunt to try to get a reaction. Hilarity ensued, or at least as much as the show pulls off.

Good Grief!

Any bets as to where in DC they will head to? Like maybe where there are lots of cameras and a foil?

Any indication that any of the Doctors weren’t gay?

It’s actually implied that the Doctor is likely bisexual, if anything.

That would be the Doctors and the TeleTubbies, then.

BTW, this was on SNL last night. It’s a perfect spoof of Pink Floyd, Dead Poet’s Society, and Koehler commercials:

Now that I think about it, “Little Shop of Horrors” has a really racist undertone of “Black People Getting Mad & Scaring White Folks” that is epitomized in this song:

So he can run out of ammo and equipment, and piss off everyone in the country even faster?

Please proceed.

Apparently it’s finally gotten through to him that his generals saying that they’ve no manpower to hold the Donbas and Southern Ukraine means there’s no manpower to hold them. What he hasn’t yet seemed to understand is throwing barely trained conscripts into aged, decrepit tanks is only going to increase the speed of the meat grinder.

It strikes me that this Ukraine thing has to start coming to some obvious end in the next month.

Is not Putin going in for surgery? Will he survive? Does he trust his doctors?

And for how long can Russia use their foreign currency reserves to buy stuff from the few countries that still trade with them? I guess China is the largest, but I have to doubt that Chinese companies will want to give Russian lines of credit (i.e., ship goods without payment.)

Either Putin has to ramp up some big time military effort to conscript hundreds of thousands, or the Russians just have to go home in defeat.

Best predictions I saw last week were that Russia had 2-4 weeks of offensive operations left in them, and then they were going to be totally spent in terms of manpower and materiel. To paraphrase Max Brooks from World War Z, it’s easy to create an army. You just grab a bunch of men, put them in identical uniforms, give each one a sharpened stick, then point them at an enemy while yelling “KILL!” Problem is this isn’t WWII, it’s not Korea, and it’s not even Vietnam.

Everybody talks about how the USSR turned the tide of war and ended up burying the Nazis with sheer numbers, but what that overshadows is that most every war that Russia and the USSR fought during the 20th century ended up being a shitshow. From the Russo-Japanese War to Afghanistan, the only time the Russians can seem to win is when somebody else is footing the bill.

I seem to remember a scene from La Femme Nikita when the agency’s top guy is undergoing surgery, and his 2iC is in the OR with weapons, having informed the surgeon “if he dies you die. if he lives you live.”

Yeah, after literal decades of mindless recitations of “Tree of Liberty” or trading around totally fictional quotes about “tyranny,” “freedom,” and the governments fearing their people, all while pundits either looked the other way or even praised such acts (until it got somebody killed, then it was BSAB “violent rhetoric”), I feel right in telling the lot of them to fuck off. I mean, if they want us to act in the tradition of our Founding Fathers in respecting the traditional forms of political discourse, I’m all for bringing back tarring and feathering…

Kamil Galeev posted a Twitter thread about this early in the war.

He called it a sort of “necropolitics”. The Russians have no future, so they can only look to the past.

This is why I hate veteran worship. The Russians have only intensified what, and how, MAGA’s feel about the troops. Americans have dressed up like this on the 4th, of course. Russia just does it harder!

That they are suckers and losers? That’s what Clownstick thinks of them. Also, Putin put bounties on them and he didn’t even mention it. Not even to say he didn’t care.

Meanwhile, in the real world, Pizza Hut was a company in decline even before the pandemic, but was especially hit hard because they put more focus on their restaurants compared to competitors like Dominos that only offer delivery or take-out. I’m sure you can find any number of former PH restaurants that are now abandoned due to COVID.

I used to work for them in days of yore (the 90s) and even then PH was moving away from having the “Red Roof” restaurants to focus on delivery and carry-out orders. They weren’t mass closing them, but they didn’t open any more. COVID has little or nothing to do with it.

There was a PH briefly in Salem, Mass., in the early 1990’s. I went there a few times. It has been a sports bar for many years. (Unlike Boston, which had a very noticeable COVID recession, my town didn’t lose any business and our vacancy rate never changed.)

The local one here went under when the long time (ie competent) manager passed away unexpectedly and her replacements went from bad to worse. It was gone before the pandemic and locally owned shops more than picked up the slack.
