Remembering my health class and the reel-to-reel film from the 1970s with shaggy-haired Sonny Bono telling us not to smoke weed.

Only later would I learn that getting stoned and listening to the Ramones “Loco Live” was a great way to clean the house and do the laundry!

There’s also a charming SCOTUS precedent protecting the “first amendment rights” for people to picket at the homes of abortion clinic staff.

Here’s a simple idea. Justices have to face exactly the level of in-your-face protesting they have allowed at abortion clinics.

She destroyed her life, then ate a bullet, for some murderous dude who no doubt strung her along in order to break out…some things, I just don’t get.

I’d guess that she’s on her own, and he made her feel wanted for the first time in a long time, and now instead of enjoying her retirement, she’s dead from terrible judgement.

What folks like this have to realize is that the people they’re trying to talk sense to genuinely believe that the ideal solution to “illegal” immigration is a weaponized border and concentration camps for those manage to get into the country, because such will serve as a “deterrent” to other “illegals.”

They don’t just intend to pass bans, they intend to make examples of as many “sinners” as they possibly can. They’re not just going to write laws banning abortions and/or contraceptives, they’re going to make the punishments so draconian that Nelson Mandela’s incarceration will seem kind by comparison. They crammed little kids into cages, they’re gonna do it to women next.

Especially once the draconian abortion bans are enacted in red states and are then treated with the contempt they deserve by a significant fraction of the population. That will enrage the theocrats, setting up a vicious positive feedback loop.

My hope is that this mess ends the GOP before the body count gets too high, but both things (end of the GOP and a low body count) are unlikely.

What we can look forward to in red states, if not a GQP-controlled Congress, is almost immediate efforts to not simply ban abortion (assuming there’s not already laws that will “snap” in place at a preset time) and contraception, but to do so much damage to the access and usage of both that even if the laws are eventually overturned, the it will take even longer to rebuild from the rubble. They’re going to not simply drive Planned Parenthood out of business, they’re going to salt the earth and then nuke the site from orbit. And they will do it to as an example to any other such organizations that if they even think of trying to compete with religious-based “family planning” services, they will face the same or worse.

re: #35 Belafon

I have no doubt that Belafon, as a veteran, fully gets this, but for those not having been in the military.

Males with heavy beards of thick, curly hair can often get ingrown hairs from closely shaving. This can cause infections, scarring, and other medical issues.

In the Army it was compounded in Combat Arms units which were often out in the field. Hygiene often can’t be as well maintained in the field.

Some of these folks are given waivers so they do not have to shave as closely or as often as other troops. Many of those with thick curly beards are African-American.

While all organizations, including the military, have this problem, the Air Force seems to have been particularly afflicted by this and other forms xenophobia.

I suspect that if the quoted text conversation proves true, the sender and his chain of command are going to come under some serious scrutiny.

Which is a less direct way of saying what you described above. :)

Given my cynical nature, I suspect the USAF brass will be more outraged that the whole thing was made public rather than “going through the proper channels,” i.e. uselessly taking it higher up the chain of command only to be told that it would be “investigated.”

We truly do have an aristocracy in this country that thinks the only time voters may have their voices heard is the 5 minutes (give or take) that they spend filling out an electoral ballot…and, if many get their way, they won’t even have that in the near future.

re: #209 Dangerman

Cause of this?

This is a story about lying. Public lying. It is a story about Senator John McCain’s lying, and the damage it has done to many people, including me. It is also a story about my lying because, ultimately, John McCain’s lie became mine.

Interesting article by Steve Schmidt but I do have at least one criticism: he tries to downplay his role in the disastrous Sarah Palin selection. He admits to being the one to suggest her for consideration, without knowing much about her, because the other choices appeared to guarantee a loss. But then he declined McCain’s request to be present when McCain had his first interview of Palin. McCain had every reason to believe that she had been appropriately vetted; as the senior campaign advisor, Schmidt was truly derelict in his responsibilities by not joining McCain for this meeting. He could have prevented the fiasco if this meeting would have revealed the depth of her ignorance to him. It is convenient for him that he now could claim it was McCain’s error in judgement, since he wasn’t there. It is equally possible that he too would have succumbed to her superficial charm — and only realized the mistake later on.

In 2008 before McCain made his announcement of running mate, I attended a party where one of the other guests who had ties to various politicians told me that Palin would be the likely selection. He felt she would be a good complement to McCain. Palin was seen as a rising star. Too many who seem experienced and knowledgeable make superficial assessments, because style trumps substance in the political world, and we are all paying the price for that.
