They just assumed that a bus full of black kids would have drugs, so they made up an excuse to pull them over and searched their luggage without probable cause.

So, hear me out: balls of sea food risotto breaded and deep fried then served with a sauce of creamed roast corn. A little mashed cauliflower, arugula salad.

I have two carbon steel pans on the way: 8” and 11”. His and his (which Shissus can borrow).

Hoping they could ruin a kid’s life by hanging a criminal record on them, just because they are black.

I spent a couple of hours working through various trainings. One of them was the discrimination and anti-harassment training.

I’m going to say that ex-lawyers should not have to take this training because it’s not cut and dry like the quiz makes it out to be.

But the thing that got me was wondering how far the Supreme Court is going to trash so many laws because it’s open season on the modern world.

On a related note, I just finished re-watching When Worlds Collide, George Pal’s end of the world sci-fi epic from 1951. It is one of my favorite old time SF films, mostly because of then 24 year old Barbara Rush, with whom I fell in love the first time I saw the movie. There is also a nifty V-2 inspired spaceship, a decently paced if rather hokey script, and a very good cast all round. I did notice though, that there is not a single person of color in the movie, except an Indian UN delegate who spreaks briefly. In particular, the 40 survivors who escape the destruction of the Earth are all noticeably white. This is even though part of it is set in South Africa and the rest in and near New York City in contemporary times. Interestingly, the book it’s based on, written by Edwin Balmer and Philip Wylie in 1933, does have non-white characters.

Pal’s other Sci-fi productions, War of the Worlds (1953) and Destination Moon (1950) also lack non-white characters, though, again, the circumstances of the plot are such that non-white people would almost certainly be present. WoW does have a Hispanic character who is something of a stereotyped buffoon, though he does turn out to be the only one in his small group to exhibit any sense. A lot of this happens in Los Angeles, with large crowds of extras, but not a single black person.
I don’t know if Pal and director Byron Haskin were actively racist or if they just decided not to take chances with racist sensibilities in the audience (all too easily triggered at the time).

Interesting that it’s “haec”ceity, since haec is the feminine gender form of the pronoun. I would think “hic” or “hoc” — especially the latter — would be more likely.

From WashPost on the Baby Food Shortage.

I concentrated on the section in the article that describes the problem. The wide ranging article also discusses what actions are being done to mitigate the shortage and that the researchers were not able to detect in the factory the specific bacteria that killed the babies.

*snip*
Nationwide about 40% of large retail stores are out of stock, up from 31% in mid-April, according to Datasembly, a data analytics firm. More than half of U.S. states are seeing out-of-stock rates between 40% and 50%, according to the firm, which collects data from 11,000 locations.
*snip*
Baby formula is particularly vulnerable to disruptions because just a handful of companies account for almost the entire U.S. supply.

Industry executives say the constraints began last year as the COVID-19 pandemic led to disruptions in ingredients, labor and transportation. Supplies were further squeezed by parents stockpiling during lockdowns.

Then in February, Abbott recalled several major brands and shut down its Sturgis, Michigan, factory when federal officials concluded four babies suffered bacterial infections after consuming formula from the facility. Two of the infants died.

Just got this really nice Thunderbolt hub. If you have an M1 Mac Mini or an M1 iMac, this hub is the best way to expand the ports on your machine if you don’t need extra stuff like DisplayPort or HDMI or SD ports. It gives you 3 Thunderbolt 4 ports at 40Gb/s and a USB3.2 port at 10Gb/s.

40Gb/s isn’t just fast, it’s really fucking fast. It’s pretty much state of the art at the moment.

I hate having my phone in my pocket when I walk the dog, but there are so many times I wish I had it to take pictures. Today I took the dog to a riverfront park in a nearby town. My dog for the first time aggressively wants to go into the river (she has gone from fear to tentative interest to just jumping in). So I took her to a small boat launch so that she could walk right in instead of climbing down from the path that goes along the river and has questionable footing. I looked up as she jumped in the water and there was a bald eagle not far away resting on a tree stump on the other side of the small inlet that we were on. After a couple of minutes the majestic bird cruised over the river and then went back to the stump. I could have had an awesome photo of the eagle cruising over the surface.

But then my dog decided to go along the river of the concrete boat launch as I was watching the bird. Two steps and I lost a shoe in the muck as she tried to explore. I gently said, “don’t fucking do that!!!!” as I had to walk back through the muck to retrieve my shoe. Then the bald eagle soared and stayed airborne for several minutes nearby, sometimes high and sometimes cruising over the water. We tried to follow it as it was going north over the river in the direction we were walking. I saw a couple on the other side of the river and deliberately pointed up toward the bird. Then I saw one of them recognize what I was signalling and he pointed up and we all had a moment. This was my second bald eagle sighting here. The first was when one flew out of a tree and over our car as I was giving my son a driving lesson. There are lots of hawks around here, but the wingspan of the bald eagle demands attention.

Rand Paul would solve that in the blink of a Republican eye—by shutting down the FDA and giving the manufacturers immunity.

Those who do not remember history (or don’t care) are doomed to repeat it. Like the Elixir Sulfanilamide tragedy which help create the 1938 Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act regulations.

(A company put out an untested pediatric medicine which used anti-freeze. It killed 100 people. The only way that the FDA could intervene is because the company mislabeled its product as an ‘Elixir’ rather than as a ‘Solution’.)

Over the years I’ve submitted several user reviews to IMDB. They’ve all been accepted.

Until recently.

A review I submitted last week was rejected, without explanation.

I guessed at what the problem was: In the review I had mentioned the religious organization behind the production by their proper name.

So I resubmitted it by simply trading that proper name to something more nebulous.

This time it passed.

The IMDB review-bot apparently gets triggered on actually identifying funders.

Before the bald eagle post, I should have posted that Apple fixed my screen for free. Without Apple Care it would have cost about $500; I didn’t have Apple Care (I might get it now). I suspect it’s because I knew about the class-action lawsuit over screen issues on Macbook M1 versions that have been consistently popping up in the last 2 years.

Yeah. I’m among those who know people who are dealing with the formula shortage, and it’s been going on since last summer. Abbott has been having supply chain problems for at least that long, and the FDA found significant problems with cleanliness at the Michigan facility that was implicated in the recall.

They’re still having problems - and parents who feed their kids formula can’t just change from one to another. There’s a lot more to it than just switching - especially if you’re dealing with babies that might have lactose intolerance and need those products.

High performance drones are going to reset military thinking.

Once there are tens of millions of people who have racing drones and home-made stealth-y drones, covert operations are going to be difficult anywhere.

I’m surprised the Navy has not already found a way to swat those things away. The USN around here are constantly doing things just off-shore, and any yahoo on a boat could launch a drone to record what the USN is doing.

We used to be wary of Russian fishing vessels.

Now anyone can do surveillance.

There are solid arguments for why extending copyright to the duration it now provides should not have been done. How you shorten that without serious Constitutional implications?

Have a SCOTUS that will shred precedent and cause major harms to all kinds of businesses. Disney may be visible because they aggressively protect their copyright (which is their right). But they’re not the only ones. The backfire from this move would be severe.

That’s right - trying to bury the details until much later.

With the right kind of Nazis and sycophantic suckups, Trump would start a war and end life as we know it.

His disastrous covid response killed 1 million.

A war with China? That’d be horrific in a totally different way. Because you know Trump would launch nukes without hesitation.

Hurricane gun attack

Time for some learned military pedantry, since I know you all miss Dark Falcon so much. There were three types of gun on Hawker Hurricanes, the .303 Browning machine gun, the 20mm Hispano cannon, and the 40mm Vickers “S” cannon on special tank buster models. In turn, there were four different wing installations, “A” (8 Brownings), “B” (12 Brownings), “C” (4 20mm) and “D” (2 40mm and 2 Brownings). The attacking Hurricane in the illustration has Southeast Asia theatre markings so maybe that is where the Chinese got the idea.

Same in the Boston area. There is an uptick in cases, but not many additional hospital cases.

When you see percentage positivity figures, beware of the denominator. Boston has 10% positivity, but many fewer tests performed. Absolute numbers are decreasing.

I wonder if the Belarusian deployment isn’t more of a matter of their trying to get their troops out of harm’s way ( in a manner of speaking), at the same time making it look like they are actually doing stuff for Vlad’s Big Adventure. After all, given the choice, what is going to be a more attractive prospect: stomp around at the borders waving flags and burning gasoline, or or trundling off to Ukraine, where they might actually get shit at? Easy choice, IMHO….

Besides all the bowel-loosening revelations that we’ve received in recent days, there’s also the ones that just make you automatically facepalm upon reading the headline:

But the true cherry on top?

One of the biggest complaints Trump had, according to the report, is with the “island,” the portion of the ship that houses the command center.

“The island ‘looks really bad — it’s stupid,’ Trump said, according to Esper, who added that the former president proposed moving the structure closer to the middle of the ship, which would have been a costly and largely pointless endeavor,” said the report. “Esper says he tried to explain the functional reasons for the island’s positioning, but Trump wouldn’t have it, stressing that ‘it just doesn’t look right’ and noting that he has ‘an eye for aesthetics.’”

You lived in an apartment in NYC so gaudy that it would make a French whorehouse look understated. You insist upon covering everything around you in gold leaf that you can’t simply have gold-plated. Your “eye for aesthetics” is like that of an inbred yokel who just won the lottery. There’s a reason that your name became synonymous with “overpriced trash.”

The main dishwasher person at the restaurant I work at was out for 5 days with a case of COVID, she was back for less than a week, and now she’s out with an injury. When she’s not there, my work is harder. I’m tired. Yesterday was the first day for a guy hired as a temporary fill-in dishwasher. The schedule had our shifts overlapping for an hour. He’s an experienced dishwasher, I started putting things away that he had washed and stacked (hardest thing at a new place is knowing where things go). He made a comment about ‘we’re gonna get in each other’s way here,’ so I went up front and helped with the customers. I came back when it was close to my time to take over as disher, and he said, ‘What did I just say to you 5 minutes ago?’ I went away again, until the time he was scheduled to leave, told him what time it was, and he said, ‘No one told me to leave yet.’ I went out to the back alley and started busting cardboard boxes to throw in the recycling bin. About 15 minutes later, he came out and was smoking a cigarette. I went in and went to work. My boss knew about all this, she had suggested the cardboard. There were 4 or 5 cooks finishing up in the kitchen, and they heard the interaction better than I thought they could. Two of them said, ‘Go get in his way!” I ended up feeling more good about them having my back than I felt bad about the guy being rude.

Today he apologized for ‘snapping at’ me. I said, ‘I figured it was a long shift, and you were tired…’ He said it was long. I also heard him bitching today about what some cook had put in his sink, ‘It’s a sink, not a garbage can,’ so it wasn’t personal, he doesn’t like anyone messing with his work area. Too bad it’s in the job description.

Junior’s rant tonight is against the Ukraine aid package. He says we shouldn’t be sending money to “this clown show” in Ukraine, because we need to be more concerned about our infrastructure, homeless problem, and baby formula.

I recall a quote from Gregor Gysi, a German Leftist politician, during the Syrian refugee crisis in 2015 when people complained about how they were spending money on refugees while ignoring Germany’s own poor and homeless:

“Even without the refugees, there would still be no money for the poor and homeless here.”

For all I know, fng could be the owner’s brother. So I played it a little cooler than I felt. The owners of the restaurant are a couple who met at the restaurant (he started as a dishwasher), married, bought the restaurant (10 yrs, ago), had 2 kids, and opened a second restaurant in the town they live in, 20 miles away. The turnover in the staff is incredible, to me. I’ve been there 8 months and have become senior person on a three person closing crew. I think I’ve become senior person overall, age wise. Just before Christmas I worked with a woman for one hour on her penultimate day after working there for 30 years. She was my senior. Another guy has been there 27 years and gave 2 weeks notice three weeks ago. He said he has a hard time leaving. Last time he quit a job (27 years ago) he says he wrote their schedule for them for three more years. Of the 5 managers, the 2 who there when I started just quit.

Yup. Meanwhile, the missiles that Ukraine is popping Russian tanks with are being rushed back into production by the manufacturer because the US Army ceased orders years ago and was in the process of a service life extension program with plans to replace them with a next-gen ATGM by 2030.

Which is what makes all the screams of “DO SOMETHING” so fucking pointless, since the very forces that caused this fiasco are the ones being suggested. Speed up/streamline the inspection process for other shipments? That’s like catnip to lawyers looking to sue anybody and everybody for injury/wrongful death. Same thing applies to trying to loosen regulations regarding imported shipments of infant formula. Unless they’re seriously suggesting that the federal government step in and take over the manufacture and distribution of infant formula, there’s not a lot that can be done that doesn’t run a massive risk of only compounding the factors that lead to the shortage in the first place.

“Get rid of pesky government regulation!!!”

I still remember the stories of Nestlé going off to third-world countries and distributing “free samples” of infant formula, just enough to get mothers’ own milk to dry up and get them dependent on Nestlé products, often in places that lacked clean water or sterilization facilities for the formula.

It was then that I realized that you cannot treat human food and nutrition solely as a commodity, it needs to be regulated. I have no problem with market mechanisms, but not the Unregulated Free Market as an Ideology.

Don’t like SNAP or subsidized school lunches?

Ignore the loaves and fishes and go right to “He who does not work, does not eat” while ignoring the context of the latter verse.

Anti-abortion?

Ignore all the OT passages in which it is allowed (or even mandatory) and go right to “For I loved you when you were still in the womb” as proof that abortion is babycide.

And don’t forget all the favorite verses used by Southern slaveowners to justify their “Biblical institution”.

This is the problem with churches literally teaching theology that says, “We can ignore the parts of the Bible we think are problematic because Jesus made them irrelevant.” And don’t get me wrong; I think that’s appropriate in context, since I don’t think there’s a need to adhere to the old rules of ceremonial cleanliness or ritual sacrifice, among other things. But more and more churches are allowing what used to be a strict set of rules regarding what is and isn’t “the new law” to simply become, “Hey, whatever you don’t like about the Bible, just sweep it under this here rug.”

Again: if you want to display Confederate regalia as a private person then I guess that is your good right and nobody is going to take it away or restrict it unless you do it in a threatening manner.

But Confederate flags, statues or memorabilia have no place on public property or display unless it is part of a museum exhibit, memorial or historical site - and within the proper context.

There are people complaining about accuracy but the characters in the books are about 10. How old were the characters in the movies?

it’s one of my complaints about game of thrones. The Stark girls are way older than they were in the books. An innocent casting choice? Not really. It means the oldest sister comes off for the first few seasons as an utter prat, because she’s old enough to where we just instinctively know she should know better than to make any number of her bad decisions. But in the book, she’s younger and it’s a lot more forgiveable.

July 19, 2022 will mark the two-year anniversary of the day Anderl was fatally shot inside his family’s home by a man disgruntled with his mother.
Shot in the heart, he died protecting his father, defense attorney Mark Anderl, who suffered multiple gunshot wounds in the attack by a man posing as a delivery person. Salas, who was in another part of the house, was not physically injured.

Fuck the uterei.

That’s the sole message the GOP is bringing. They’re full on about how oil prices are Biden’s fault, even though he has no control over it - the market determines prices, even as Biden has released oil from the SPR to try and bring it down.

Oil prices are disconnected from gas prices. Energy companies are profiting on the spread, because oil prices at around $100 should reflect as a gas price of around $3, not $4+. That’s the historical relationship, but energy companies have wrung out higher profits by keeping prices high.

The high energy prices disproportionately hit the poorest Americans - for heating, cooling, and motor fuel. It’ll take a higher chunk of their take home income.

GOP is fine with that. They are fine with preserving the fossil fuel paradigm, and vote against anything that would shift us away from that paradigm.

There are plenty of Orthodox Americans who do not buy into the Nationalist aspects of it, and I believe that is what is attracting a lot of the people lately: remember Putin’s speech about Russia being the last Great Defender of Christian Values (The Third Rome, after Rome and Constantinople fell to decadence and dissolution)

If you think they aren’t going to love printing stories about women being arrested after having a miscarriage, think again. There is going to be a lot of coverage of the huge demonstrations that are going to be happening as well. They do normalize GOP bullshit, but they love big stories as well.

But then we’ll inevitably get BS editorials like: “Women in southern states now have fewer options to terminate a pregnancy. Here’s why that’s a good thing.” (Written of course, by someone with a penis)

re: #205 wrenchwench

Too bad it’s in the job description.

yeah, the thing i fucking hated about washing dishes was those mother*****s who would put cigarettes out in the little dessert bowls, normally with apple cobbler or the like still in it. How much of a greaseball does someone have to be to do something like that?

If you think I’m rooting for Roe to be overturned, in a way I am. It will be terrible, but apparently we need something terrible to happen to wake us up as we sleepwalk into fascism. If otoh, Roberts succeeds in coaxing Kavanaugh and/or Barrett into just upholding the Mississippi 15 week ban while revising Roe to protect abortions during the first 15 weeks, when most abortions happen anyway, the issue will kind of fizzle as the frog is slowly boiled, and a GOP takeover of Congress in the midterms is virtually assured.

Grumble grumble. Look at ebay. Caddy $11, cable $8. No biggie but annoying.

I”m putting the bottom back on and laptop and notice they have an 800 number on it labeled “Acer Refurbished Support” Hmm…

10 minutes later, a free HD kit of cable & caddy is on the way by fedex ground, 3 ~ 5 days.

The notion behind crypto is that people did not trust national governments to manage currencies. So instead they put their faith in faceless electronic entities who exist only in the form of server traffic.

No one ever accused Libertarians of being clear thinkers.

There’s also the fact there are almost no legitimate use cases for crypto.

Crypto’s biggest feature was that there was no government behind it when it fails.

I went to the library this morning and picked up Timothy Snyder’s Bloodlands that they were holding for me. Reading the preface. I knew the general outlines of how bad things were between 1933-1945, but not how much worse than I thought. I’m not sure I can finish. I know why Snyder seems so glum right now. It’s not out of the question that Trump, if reelected, would surround himself with absolute loyalists who would round people like us up. I know it sounds hysterical, but there are way too many examples in history.

Same as the victims of any grift. It’s much harder to grift someone who believes that people should work for their money.

For most ordinary people who manage to acquire a relatively healthy level of assets, it is a combination of working, saving money in the company’s 401(k), and retiring later, rather then earlier. Too many people are gullible when it comes to investments. And too many don’t do the saving step — most because their income is insufficient to save but some because they aren’t willing to adopt a more modest lifestyle.

I’m nearly 40. The “financial advisor” pane on my retirement account reports the average 401(k) savings for people my age; it’s barely $40,000. That strikes me as woefully inadequate, given that retirement accounts are fairly volatile, and also that there are only ~25 years to the nominal retirement age, with probably a good 20-25 years of life beyond that at current life expectancies.

Nick Martin, who monitors extremist activity, has more on the schism, saying McNeil has accused Fuentes of hiding the group’s finances from him and fellow board member Michelle Malkin, and he said that and other unspecified new revelations caused him to distance himself from America First.

Fuentes hiding the group’s finances from the group’s treasurer?

I’ll grant that it’s difficult to save when salaries are low. I missed out on a couple of years of retirement saving when I was a contractor early on, when I was struggling to start our family. Once I finally started to get paid something closer to market rates with a few years under my belt, though, I was able to catch up a little bit on my retirement account, and now, aside from the current temporary downturn, it’s doing just fine. I saw there was proposed legislation (Biden’s economic plan?) to do automatic enrollment for qualified employees; I think that is a fantastic idea to promote more retirement investment.

This is nice to see. It took a long time, and a lot of films, but James Hong finally got his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame:

James Hong, one of the most prolific Asian American actors in history, got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Tuesday.

Hong, 93, who was joined by celebrity guest speakers Daniel Dae Kim and Jamie Lee Curtis, unveiled his star in a ceremony, becoming one of just 19 people of Asian descent to make it on the walk out of more than 2,700. Hong told the crowd of co-stars and fans that he hoped to soak up the occasion.

“As you can see, I don’t have any speeches, because I’m not that kind of person. I just come here. I want to feel the moment,” Hong said before he showed off some of his best dance moves.

That’s why Social Security is so important, providing a steady income for life after retirement. Any proposal that allows us to “invest” instead of receiving a pension will end up with a few doing really well while the rest will live in abject poverty. Today crypto scam artists have advertisements on how to invest your IRAs in these ersatz currencies; I shudder to think of the conmen (and women) out there ready to pounce on individual “Social Security” accounts if they ever come to pass.

my grandmother’s brisket recipe (at least I assume it was grandma’s, I got it from mom) included Lipton’s Onion Soup Mix, Heinz ketchup, and Coca-Cola. Nothing from the produce aisle.

It took all day; after searing all the sides, it goes into a big pot with all the other ingredients, simmer on low, and as the water evaporates add more. Several times.

I used to make that recipe!

Now I make Michael Twitty’s West African Brisket.
