The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music’s Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It’s the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.

Ann Powers | May 12, 2022
“Tiny Desk at home? I kinda live on the road!” the legendary Buffy Sainte-Marie exclaims one song into her high-spirited set recorded a few miles outside Toronto at the beginning of the 81-year-old’s umpteenth tour. Sainte-Marie has always been a wandering soul with a fierce sense of direction. The four songs she performs here with her touring band span her nearly 60-year career, connecting her righteous protest songs – including “Universal Soldier,” as relevant today as it was when it became an anthem during the Vietnam War – to the love songs that have soundtracked countless slow dances. This set is a kind of Sainte-Marie primer, touching on her early days as the 1960s folk revival’s brashest innovator and her mid-career turns writing country and pop hits like this set’s smooth closer, “Up Where We Belong,” which won her an Academy Award for best original song in 1983.

Playing a Yamaha “Silent Guitar,” designed for road conditions where playing on headphones might be a requirement on a tour bus, and then switching to a small keyboard, Sainte-Marie is an easeful band leader. This occasion was, in fact, her first reunion with her touring band since the pandemic began, and their joy in playing these songs is palpable. Check out Matt Starr’s rolling drum fills on “It’s My Way” and bassist Mark Olexson’s tender twinning with Sainte-Marie’s guitar on “Until It’s Time for You to Go.” But mostly, revel in Sainte-Marie’s inimitable spirit, one of the greatest sparks popular music has ignited.

Just an update on the crypto wreck… Luna coin is now trading at less than a penny, down from over 80 on Monday and an all time high of over 120 earlier this year…

The Luna based UST token, which is supposed to be pegged to the dollar is now trading at 19 cents.

That is all.

CL’d in the last thread.

Do you have an opinion on who the final 4 will be for the House race? And who is most likely to win in the final competition?

I have no idea of who the Final Four will be. I have a hunch Santa Clause might make it just for the novelty effect. Otherwise Al Gross (I), who just promised to caucus with the Dems, comes to mind. Sarah Palin is a wild card. People up here either love her or hate her. Right now, I think more people hate her.

Campaigning has barely begun.

Not quite, though the effect was similar. A rug pull is when the founders take the money and run. This didn’t happen here. It was most likely an external attack like Soros making a killing off the bank of England in the 90s. Someone made a LOT of money on this mess.

I had heard discussions that the Czech Republic might supply Ukraine with some of it’s self propelled howitzers. (Either Suzana 155mm or Dana 152mm) I had not heard that it had happened.

I suspect that for NATO countries, using 152mm artillery is pretty much a dead end these days. Probably best to get them to Ukraine who can still use them. Although it looks like Ukraine is also in the process of moving from Soviet/Russian standard to NATO standard.

Speaking of UFO’s. This happened during WW2:

[Test Pilot] Woolams was known as a bit of a practical joker. While flying the still unknown [aka super secret] experimental P-59 jet airplane, he would join formation with unsuspecting pilots flying propeller-driven fighters and to their surprise, wave at them while wearing a gorilla mask, bowler hat, and cigar, and then fly away leaving them behind.

en.wikipedia.org

[The P-59] was so secret, in fact, that when the P-59 was taxiing, airmen put a fake wooden propeller on her nose so onlookers wouldn’t notice anything odd about the aircraft.

In the air, however, it was a different story. Pilots flying the usual piston-driven aviation engine would report back to base with sightings of a fast-moving plane without a propeller. They also said the plane was flown by a “gorilla, wearing a derby hat, waving a stogie at them.”
*snip*
Other pilots who were exposed to Woolams’ prank were convinced by Air Force psychologists that they hadn’t really seen the gorilla flying the plane, “because everyone knows you can’t fly without a propeller.”

Jesus Harold Christ, that’s gonna be a fucking disaster. An unvaccinated population, and with (I’d wager) virtually zero previous exposure and thus no naturally-occurring antibodies whatsoever, already hit by almost perpetual malnutrition and now a highly infectious viral disease is (almost certainly) running rampant.

Yikes. And given the uniquely cruel nature of that regime, I’d bet they’ll go full World War Z if a nationwide lockdown doesn’t get it under control- and by that, I mean they’ll just shoot everyone that tests positive for it.

Seems that Elon Musk’s much-vaunted deal to buy Twitter is “on hold”:

Shares of the social media company fell 20% in premarket trading. Twitter did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The company had earlier this month estimated that false or spam accounts represented fewer than 5% of its monetizable daily active users during the first quarter.

It also said it faced several risks until the deal with Musk is closed, including whether advertisers would continue to spend on Twitter.

This is America.

Shocking surveillance footage captured part of a deadly ambush attack on a man pumping gas at Philadelphia gas station earlier this week.

Two killers dressed in all black fatally shot the victim in broad daylight at a Gulf Station in North Philly on Monday, authorities said.

Video released by Philadelphia police shows the suspects pulling into the gas station in a maroon Mazda 3 with New Jersey plates at about 2:30 p.m. before parking in the corner of the lot.

The assailants, who were also wearing masks and hoods, then darted out of the car and ran towards their target as one brandished an assault rifle and the other wielded a handgun, video showed.

The suspects fired multiple times at the victim, identified by Fox Philadelphia as 30-year-old Brandon Dixon.

They both harken back to an age when we lived as nomadic goat, sheep and camel herders, in societies run by robed, bearded Patriarchs who held their women and their livestock as chattel.

On that subject, the Archbishop of Prague has been replaced. The current Archbishop was a fatuous gasbag, but he had to step down now that he’s 75 years old (some kind of mandatory retirement age, apparently).

The new Archbishop is, at least, not a fatuous gasbag - but the only problem is that he’s 74 years old, which means he’ll have to retire next year. I guess this was a temporary solution until Pope Francis can find a more suitable replacement: Word on the grapevine was that the Pope couldn’t stand the outgoing Archbishop and is glad to see him gone.

50 years ago today.

The Rolling Stones famously got their rocks off during the making of their classic “Exile on Main St.” album.

In fact, the drug-fueled debauchery had Keith Richards — in the throes of a heroin addiction — going MIA within his French villa where the Stones recorded the sprawling double LP, which was released 50 years ago on May 12, 1972.

“Keith had his son Marlon with him, and he would say, ‘Oh, I’m gonna go put Marlon to bed.’ And then you wouldn’t see him for a day and a half,” said Anthony DeCurtis, who wrote the liner notes for the 2010 reissue of “Exile on Main St.” as well as the 2021 book “The Rolling Stones: Unzipped.” “And I think that that was beginning to create issues in the band. One of your main songwriters and, in many ways, the musical driving force of the band is somebody who’s having drug problems. And I think that comes up in the lyrics.”

Just an update on the crypto wreck… Luna coin is now trading at less than a penny, down from over 80 on Monday and an all time high of over 120 earlier this year…

The Luna based UST token, which is supposed to be pegged to the dollar is now trading at 19 cents.

That is all.

So I can now buy over 28,000 Luna for a buck? Will it bounce back to $80 in a week?
0.000035 USD to 1 Luna just now. Wow. Hell, you can buy over 2500 luna for a Dogecoin.

A report by the Swedish government on the changed security environment facing the Nordic country after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine says Moscow would react negatively to Sweden joining NATO and launch several counter-measures.

Meanwhile, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Friday that his country is “not favorable” toward Finland and Sweden joining the alliance. As a NATO member, Turkey could veto moves to admit the two countries.

“We are following developments concerning Sweden and Finland carefully but we are not of a favorable opinion,” Erdogan told reporters.

DeathSantis’s spokesbimbo called him and said, retract your tweet, we rejected these textbooks as “containing CRT” if they marked them 4/5 for compliance with FL guidelines instead of 5/5, even if they noted no CRT. Judd pressed for examples, FL Department of Education started tweeting nasty tweets at him. Still no concrete evidence of CRT in textbooks, nothing but nasty name-calling and threats from the FL Department of Education and the FL Press Secretary.

FAA revokes certificates of pilots involved in Red Bull plane-swapping stunt

ELOY, Ariz. — The two pilots involved in a Red Bull plane-swapping stunt last month in Arizona had their certificates revoked by the Federal Aviation Administration this week.

In a May 10 emergency order, the FAA cites the two pilots, Luke Aikins and Andrew Farrington, and describes their actions as “careless and reckless.”

The FAA does not fuck around. When you’re in the air, hundreds of lives are at stake, regardless of whether your plan is well thought-out or not. If you think I’m exaggerating, consider: What if these two idiots miscalculated, and their planes crashed into a moderately populated neighborhood, or an industrial facility?

What gets me is they applied for an exemption to the rules and the FAA told them no and those two idjits and Red Bull still went ahead a did it.

Our blue heron has been showing up at its favorite fishing area in the river lately now that the river is back down after all the rain. Have seen the osprey fly over a few times but it hasn’t perched on its usual perch in the sycamore tree by the river that I have seen this year. Haven’t seen the eagle that usually fishes along my sitting spot along the river, but I have seen a few perched in trees at the reservoir south of here.

The Lancet is fuming. a blistering editorial on the leaked Supreme Court draft decision that would overturn Roe v. Wade:

“If the U.S. Supreme Court confirms its draft decision, women will die. The Justices who vote to strike down Roe will not succeed in ending abortion, they will only succeed in ending safe abortion. Alito and his supporters will have women’s blood on their hands.”

“What is so shocking, inhuman, and irrational about this draft opinion is that the Court is basing its decision on an 18th-century document ignorant of 21st-century realities for women. The route forward is unclear and perilous. This Court’s argument suggests possible future attacks on a raft of other civil rights, from marriage equality to contraception

You are right. I still recall having a movie (or was it a play?) ruined over 20 years ago because critics assumed the audience had already seen it. I had religiously avoided reading anything about the storyline but, in an article about a totally different topic, the writer revealed the surprise during the last scene.

Puff piece on Madison Cawthorn in Politico today. I love foreshadowing in a story!

“I miss my life,” he said. “I miss being able to defend myself … being able to dress myself … being able to use the bathroom without someone helping me … I miss not peeing the bed because I have no control over my penis … not having to have pills keep me alive … being able to compete … being checked out by girls … I miss my pride as a man … the pride my father swelled with when he spoke my name … I miss,” he said, “not having to convince myself every day not to pull the trigger and end it all.

Four and a half years after Cawthorn contemplated suicide, he was running for Congress. Turning a stirring story of conquering adversity into a shocking political victory, he achieved his most ambitious career goal at a staggeringly early age. And within weeks if not days of being sworn in — at 25 years old one of the youngest members in the history of the House — he had put himself on a short list of the chamber’s most known figures. Now, though, heading into his first reelection, Cawthorn is mired in controversy, facing the very real possibility that the end of his electoral career might come as quickly as it began. Emboldened by Cawthorn’s miscues, misdeeds and array of indiscretions, seven Republican challengers have lined up to try to take him out in Tuesday’s primary, party leaders have abandoned him, and other MAGA firebrands are keeping their distance what with the escalating storm of even just the past few months.

I think I know the end of this pill popper’s story, I rather enjoy the reports of his hijinks, shenanigans and tomfoolery.

States have passed similar legislation on other issues; don’t know how they fared but often opponents don’t have the resources to mount a suit. For example, there are food disparagement laws that prevent people from criticizing beef or various other products.

Between this and the Social Media Law, Texas is trying to push Florida out of the ‘largest GOP mini-dictatorship’ role, especially with how much their authoritarianism bleeds into the US at large.

A few weeks ago we had to put down our dog for cancer. We’re starting to look for a new rescue dog, and noticing a lot of dogs that are under two years old. I suspect a lot of those dogs were purchased during the lock-downs. Lots of GSDs and Huskys.

Neither dogs great for the uninitiated.

It was just one of those albums you could not escape if you lived in a college dormitory in the late 70’s…along with Hotel California, Leftoverture, Peter Frampton Live, Boston, Animals, Steve Miller Band, Wings Over America, Dreamboat Annie, etc…

At one time or another, I’ve had all those albums in my LP collection. Some of the great classics of the 70’s. Had a few from Styx as well; The Grand Illusion, Cornerstone, Pieces of Eight (I still have Paradise Theater, Cornerstone and Kilroy Was Here). Also, still have the eponymous debut album from Van Halen - another legendary 70’s recording.

Texas has the advantage there, in that I believe it is harder for Florida to get away with judge-shopping, whereas Texas has a special district with a Trump-humper judge who will sign literally anything accused felon Ken Paxton puts in front of him, which then goes to the utterly corrupt Calvinball-playing Fifth Circus Court of Appeals. Which means Texas gets a free pass to do whatever the fuck they want, and when people sue, it gets slow-walked in front of the Supreme Court while Texas burns.

The late Norm Macdonald has a final gift to deliver to the world as the beloved comedian taped a secret one-hour stand-up comedy special before his passing last September.

Macdonald was working on new material for a Netflix special while undergoing treatment for acute leukemia, a disease he quietly lived with for nine years. In case “things went south,” the SNL alum wanted to get something on tape, so he shot an entire hour’s worth of material in his living room in a single take.

“His test results were not good, so during the heart of COVID-19 pandemic and literally the night before going in for a procedure, he wanted to get this on tape just in case — as he put it — things went south,” said Macdonald’s longtime producing partner Lori Jo Hoekstra (via The Hollywood Reporter). “It was his intention to have a special to share if something happened.”

re: #177 Dopamine Fish

TL;DR: Judd posted a Tweet that said Florida rejected textbooks for containing CRT, but went through the reviews, and all of them explicitly said “no CRT”.

CRT claims were the smoke screen for awarding all the school book contracts to a buddy of DeSantis and pals. It’s a grift being paid for by the government of Florida.

States have passed similar legislation on other issues; don’t know how they fared but often opponents don’t have the resources to mount a suit. For example, there are food disparagement laws that prevent people from criticizing beef or various other products.

I think this is different, because pharmacy is a profession you have to be licensed in and information about medication interactions or the absolute failure of medications to work is part of the job of being a pharmacist. I can’t see a pharmacist at *scratches head* Sinks Pharmacy in Iberia, MO, filing a lawsuit, but I could see CVS and Walgreens doing so for their pharmacists. It’s just a lawsuit waiting to happen if some irate relative decides ivermectin killed his pappy and gets a hungry lawyer to go for it. (And there are a lot of hungry lawyers out there.)

In a bit of local news, two deputy mayors here in Ostrava were arrested today, on suspicion of accepting bribes, influence-peddling and corruption. They should be arraigned Monday morning, so they’ll both get to cool their heels this weekend in the city jail. Needless to say, they’re both claiming ITZ TEH POLITICAL PERSECUTION!! as they’re both members of ANO, the political party headed by former PM Andrej Babiš, which has seen its members continually arrested and convicted for all manner of corrupt acts (IMHO, that whole party is nothing but a front for massive bribery and money laundering).

If convicted, they’re looking at five years in the slammer. Where, presumably, they can catch up with some of their former colleagues, LOL.

I’m thinking there’s a freedom of speech issue here with “not criticizing horse paste.” I don’t think the government can tell pharmacists they can’t do this. Do we know if the law indemnifies pharmacists from lawsuits if they’re not permitted to criticize horse paste, a customer buys it and then is adversely affected?

did you ask the pharmacist any questions when you dropped off your prescription?

did you ask for or receive counseling about your medication when you picked it up? (these days, usually you have to sign that you accepted or declined)

if the answer is no, then whatever happens is on you.
