I was regretting not being able to attend this protest in Boise. But after seeing some pictures from the event, I am now glad I didn’t go. A lot of people there with no mask, no social distancing and unknown vax status. Thanks, but no thanks.

Sigh.

A five-week-old baby and a man were killed in a horrific crash after a mother led police on a high-speed chase after stealing baby products from a Louisiana Walmart.

Edward Williams, of Monroe, and a five-week-old baby died after Candance Gill, 38, led police on a chase that ended up in two crumpled cars shortly after 6pm on Monday.

Gill and Williams were reportedly confronted by security at a Walmart for stealing baby products. By the time police arrived to the scene, the couple had already fled in their vehicle.

Got CL’d, so I’m copying my response to the discussion of Samurai and sexual politics:
Sagehen said, “so, like Spartans?”

A little, maybe. They policed intercourse also because of the caste system, family honor, and economic realities as much as anything. While it wasn’t unheard of for samurai to marry a merchant’s daughter, it was the exception that proved the rule that samurai were to marry within their social rank at the top of the social order. Most samurai by the 18th century and certainly the early 19th century struggled to get by on meager stipends, so they wanted to avoid having too many mouths to feed. Daughters could be a burden, but usually arrangements could be made that were mutually beneficial between families (daughters were not expected to have much say in the matter). Excess sons were a problem were ok if they could land a position, but many were barely employed and survived on those meager stipends and any side work that they could get, which was heavily frowned upon; or, they could be adopted into a family without male heir to take over as family head. Or they might be sent to a temple to become a monk.

In the countryside, peasants of course also had to balance the size of the family giving rise to the social problem of mabiki. Mabiki was a euphemism (it meant “weeding between the crops”) for infanticide. In some areas where there few options, families might only allow the eldest son to marry. Over time, wealthy farmers and merchants started to emulate the samurai.

Sex and sexual politics were complicated and fascinating. I wish I knew more. I do know that these issues were at the heart of literature, drama, and woodblock prints (there was a thriving sub-culture of erotic prints, too; the Kinsey Institute of Human Sexuality at Indiana University has a large collection, many of which were confiscated from GI’s personal belongings that were shipped from Japan during the occupation and found during searches in St. Louis).

Could someone from Texas advise me on the Henry Cuellar vs Jessica Cisneros primary. The Cisneros campaign has been “harassing” me for donations. All things being equal, I would prefer her but they never are. Local demographics and views are always paramount.

(1) Can she defeat him in the primary?
(2) Can she win the general election?

If 2 is no, then I will definitely not help her out.

My friend just drove by the venue where the Reawaken America goat rodeo (Mike Flynn, Eric Trump, Mike Lindell et al are supposed to be speaking—ewww) and said the parking lot is totally full and cars are parked all over the grass nearby. Venue seats 2,000 and they claim it is sold out. I’m sure a lot are traveling weirdos, but also lots of locals, and I live among them.

To be fair, it looks like Alito might realize just how big of a Charlie Foxtrot this bill, and the corresponding Fifth Circus Court of Appeals decision, really are. And this is something that is a priority for the Court, at least, because of the immense implications for the large tech companies the law is targeting.

They have been very transparent in their worldview for decades now. They use the terms “Prayer warriors” and “Soldiers for Christ” in their rhetoric to describe themselves and in the past few years their bumper stickers and campaign slogans/ads have gotten ever more threatening and violent in intent.

There are methods however to counter the right wing’s violence and increasing oppression. One is either a General Strike or a series of organized strikes designed to cripple various economic targets or cause pain to right wing partisan or campaign-financing industries. Another is the old -school women’s strike using sex. Unwilling women can probably cause a lot of angst amongst right wing men and might lead to a quick reversal of many upcoming atrocious judicial decisions and laws.

Yep, he livestreamed it and apparently posted his manifesto on 4Chan and 8kun.

Saturday’s attack was live-streamed on Twitch and screenshots from the recording showed horrific scenes, including a woman who is shot in the head as she walks outside the store. In other screenshots, victims can be seen on the floor of the supermarket.

A 106-page online manifesto, believed to have been uploaded by the shooter, explained that he was motivated by a conspiracy theory that white people are being replaced by other races. In the document, he says he is 18 years old and a self-described white supremacist and anti-semite.

The ‘Abortion is Murder/Baby Killer’ people have planted themselves on a tenuous hill be declaring a zygote is a human life. They should not be afforded that safe harbor.

If it is a human life and abortion is murder then they cannot accept abortion at any of the times they’ve pushed for: fetal pain, fetal heartbeat, arbitrary gestational milestones, etc. If it’s murder then all those exceptions are semantic. Any anti-abortion stance accepting exceptions is thereby accepting murder. So if it’s murder, then the only solution is to take up arms and ‘defend’ those zygotes. By murdering people and controlling the mothers and forcing them to birth. This is the rational conclusion of anti-abortion identity.

There should be nobody in the middle on this. If you’re anti-abortion you’re an extremist and fundamentalist zealot by any and all measures. People who hedge with ‘I believe safe abortions but rare abortions’ should not be denied the fence to straddle.

We don’t need to paint anti-abortion zealots as extremists: they are. We only need to make sure our language is clear about it.

After all, you wouldn’t want to appear to the great fencesitters to be just as bad as the guilty oppressors, would you? Two wrongs don’t make a right, you know? Turn the other cheek. I am not by nature a violent person; however, I do not make a fetish of nonviolence. As someone who was a perpetual bully magnet growing up, I have come to the recognition that there ARE occasions when violence IS the legitimate response to growing threats to vulnerable people.

Silence and merely bearing witness aids the oppressor.
False equivalencies aid the oppressor.
Negotiating away the rights of a vulnerable minority to buy a temporary peace aids the oppressor.

And the oppressor will be back to target still others.

When Cox/Comcast/etc. drop the likes of Fox News from their cable TV offerings… then I will believe our society is serious about tackling the professional hate mongers.

That sort of happened with OAN, but it really didn’t generate that much revenue for the distributors so it was not a big deal to drop them.

Fox News, though, drives money and the big cable companies like that.

That adapter that connects my new iMac to the old 30” Apple Cinema Display? The 30” started turning on and off, and I noticed that the USB-C plug didn’t snap into the port as it’s supposed to. I suspect it was not making a secure connection, so I exchanged it for another one that’s getting delivered in a little while. I’m hoping it was just a defective plug and this one will snap in, because it does work, and it was great before the problem started showing up.

Wondering how difficult it would be to get a new plug and rewire it. I might look into that if this one has the same loose plug issue.

Two of the Schlock Mercenary Maxims seem appropriate:

Maxim 6. If violence wasn’t your last resort, you failed to resort to enough of it

Maxim 27. Don’t be afraid to be the first to resort to violence.

My own take on it is more along the lines of “If you fail to resort to violence soon enough, you will be required to resort to much more violence later.”

Pretty sure the grocery store wasn’t there when I lived in Buffalo in the early ’60s, but that was my general extended neighborhood. Notable area locations: The original Frank & Teressa’s Anchor Bar, The Buffalo Museum of History, Delaware Park, the Buffalo Museum of Science. I lived more north and west by a few blocks, but was a regular explorer on foot of what, at the time, seemed vast regions.

I remember it all as a huge melting pot of immigrant and first generation American families. And many of my Irish cousins still live there (that branch of the family has been in Buffalo since at least the 1800s).

This just hurts my heart so much.

Speaking of stupid, I had some CLUELESS woman try to blame the Democratic Party for failing to codify Roe into law. I first pointed out that she obviously didn’t understand how the Senate works (and yes, it’s frustrating, but you have to work with the government you have, not the magic unicorn government you want). My second point was it doesn’t MATTER if Roe was codified into law, because we have a runaway court that will overturn laws if they run up against their firmly held beliefs they mistake as bedrock constitutional verities! I finally ended up blocking this woman because life is too damned short to deal with patent idiocy.

Since that draft opinion was leaked on May 3, I abruptly dropped Japanese and decided I needed to stop dithering around and get my Spanish up to fluency since a significant proportion of the population speaks Spanish. So I went back to reading Spanish news media. Today I came across this on Infobae dot com

What it means is “Russia threatened Finland with destruction in only 10 seconds.” And then, “The vice president of the defense committee of the Duma, an ally of Putin, warned that the Satan 2 (what a name) hypersonic missile has the capacity to attack the Nordic country in the blink of an eye. This Saturday, the Kremlin stopped exporting gas to the country because of its interest in joining NATO.”

infobae.com

I can’t imagine why these people think threats like this are going to deter Finland from joining NATO. Seriously, this all came about because Russia invaded Ukraine, does anyone thing additional threats of HUGE MISSILES are going to deter more countries? Nope.

I think the majority of Americans these days don’t have a clue how the government works (by which I mean how it’s SUPPOSED to work IN THEORY). I know plenty of grown-ass adults who don’t understand that the House and the Senate are two separate entities, don’t understand that the president doesn’t have (OR IS NOT SUPPOSED TO HAVE) unilateral dictatorial powers, and don’t have the slightest idea what the courts do.

I’d be the last person to call myself an expert, but I learned most of that “mechanics of government” stuff on Saturday mornings in the late 70s and early 80s watching Schoolhouse Rock on TV (which stuck with me more than anything I ever learned in actual school at the time).

My understanding is that modern public school is preoccupied with getting students proficient enough to pass state-mandated standardized tests on which a school’s success or failure and teachers’ performance is measured. Yet, year after year, student standardized test scores rarely show improvement. Teachers are demoralized, students are demoralized, the administration and the state doubles down on the “beatings will continue until morale improves” approach for political reasons, and a significant portion of the students have checked out completely on learning and knowledge retention.

The “Back to Basics” fad of the eighties has failed.
The “We must be more like Japan” fad has failed.
The “mandatory uniforms improve discipline and boost academic performance” fad has failed.
The “Rely upon standardized Tests to measure performance and punish those who don’t measure up” fad has failed.

And, as a result, too many of our students and their parents are more ignorant than ever.
