I recall being bored of music after I got out of HS. I loved the ‘older’ rock of that era like Zep. But in HS metal was exploding and guitar pyrotechnics was the in thing. Yngwie, Randy Rhoads, Eddie, Slayer. But half the hair bands made bland music with some shredding in the middle. It didn’t last. Nowadays I see all the mastery of technique but many of these elite artists have an immense amount of musicality to go along with the technique. I got interested in music again with Primus, RHCP, then Radiohead and Tool, who to this day I don’t think have ever had a traditional guitar lead in any of their studio stuff.

I will say that Randy Rhoads would have probably evolved past Ozzy. There was something different with him.

From Dr Bruce Schneier’s monthly ‘Crypto-gram’ security newsletter

Clever Cryptocurrency Theft

[2022.04.20] Beanstalk Farms is a decentralized finance project that has a majority stake governance system: basically people have proportional votes based on the amount of currency they own. A clever hacker used a “flash loan” feature of another decentralized finance project to borrow enough of the currency to give himself a controlling stake, and then approved a $182 million transfer to his own wallet.

It is insane to me that cryptocurrencies are still a thing.

Article:

On Sunday, an attacker managed to drain around $182 million of cryptocurrency from Beanstalk Farms, a decentralized finance (DeFi) project aimed at balancing the supply and demand of different cryptocurrency assets. Notably, the attack exploited Beanstalk’s majority vote governance system, a core feature of many DeFi protocols.

*snip*

Like many other DeFi projects, the creators of Beanstalk — a development team called Publius — included a governance mechanism where participants could vote collectively on changes to the code. They would then obtain voting rights in proportion to the value of tokens that they held, creating a vulnerability that would prove to be the project’s undoing.

The attack was made possible by another DeFi product called a “flash loan,” which allows users to borrow large amounts of cryptocurrency for very short periods of time (minutes or even seconds). Flash loans are meant to provide liquidity or take advantage of price arbitrage opportunities but can also be used for more nefarious purposes.

*snip*

According to analysis from blockchain security firm CertiK, the Beanstalk attacker used a flash loan obtained through the decentralized protocol Aave to borrow close to $1 billion in cryptocurrency assets and exchanged these for enough beans to gain a 67 percent voting stake in the project. With this supermajority stake, they were able to approve the execution of code that transferred the assets to their own wallet. The attacker then instantly repaid the flash loan, netting an $80 million profit.

Based on the duration of an Aave flash loan, the entire process took place in less than 13 seconds.

One form of email tracker, a way to see whether the email has been read, is to include an image. Most email services will not download images until the user opens the email. Thus the sender can know what addresses have opened the email and how many times. The image used for tracking is often just a 1 pixel white gif that is invisible to the reader.

Apple disables this tracker by immediately downloading the images before the reader has opened the email. And it runs the image download request through some proxies so that the actual address is hidden.

Another one from Dr Schneier’s newsletter:
Apple Mail Now Blocks Email Trackers

[2022.05.09] Apple Mail now blocks email trackers by default.

Most email newsletters you get include an invisible “image,” typically a single white pixel, with a unique file name. The server keeps track of every time this “image” is opened and by which IP address. This quirk of internet history means that marketers can track exactly when you open an email and your IP address, which can be used to roughly work out your location.

So, how does Apple Mail stop this? By caching. Apple Mail downloads all images for all emails before you open them. Practically speaking, that means every message downloaded to Apple Mail is marked “read,” regardless of whether you open it. Apples also routes the download through two different proxies, meaning your precise location also can’t be tracked.

Crypto-Gram uses Mailchimp, which has these tracking pixels turned on by default. I turn them off. Normally, Mailchimp requires them to be left on for the first few mailings, presumably to prevent abuse. The company waived that requirement for me.

This crypto scam is another perfect example of Libertarianism in the real word, set free. The amount of imagination left to run wild in a regulation-free utopia boggles the mind in its efforts to simply rip people off as much as humanly possible. This is just a small taste of what is to come in our Republican Libertarian Utopia where there is no FDIC, no labor laws. no child laws, no marriage age laws, no Social Security no WIC, no Welfare, no public ownership of anything and police are private meaning they will basically fight for criminals if thrown enough money.

I’m in flip phone hell. It’s a long, pretty uninteresting story of getting phones ordered and shipped, then they didn’t arrive, but the old phones got disconnected anyway.

The second attempt at shipping is supposed to arrive Monday. The best part of the story is that the delivery folks let you give your shipment a nic so you don’t have to memorize a tracking number. I called the first attempt ‘Flip Wilson’ and the second attempt ‘Geraldine’.

True. The US Army, at the end of WW2 looked at various ways to determine when a barrel should be replaced. Things like EFC, various forms of barrel erosion, measuring muzzle velocity, accuracy, etc.

They decided in the end, to use a ‘trained human inspector’.

Unstated was the presumption that the human could figure out if there were any replacement barrels available, if there were spare howitzers available to replace the one being sent to maintenance, if the deteriorating accuracy even mattered, if the worn howitzer was likely to be damaged in battle before the barrel blew up, etc.

Some of the reserve and guard units that I was in back in the 1980s and 1990s, had howitzers and trucks that dated from the Korean War.

We used to say that it was a case of “mind over matter”. If you didn’t mind, it didn’t matter. :)

There is some reason to believe that much of libertarianism is astro-turf pushed by billionaires to weaken the US Government. So that they can seize more power and money.

But yes, it does involve throwing out much of what humanity has learned over the past 2 or 3 millennia and replacing it with crayon drawings of governance.

Yeah, I noted this bit (piece was from 2017, so one presumes the new munitions are in service now - though it’s probably not the stuff being sent to Ukraine):

This unit slots into any 155mm shell where a normal fuze would go to quickly turn it into a precision munition. This system is simpler and cheaper than Excalibur, but is also less accurate. A round with the M1156 can hit, on average, within 100 feet of the target depending on how far away it is, while the M982 regularly strikes fewer than 20 feet from the point of impact that troops program into its guidance system.

Still, I’m sure the Ukrainians can land shots close enough to count…

Fascinating!

That is a gung-ho section to fire that many rounds.

Sounds like the unit was firing a major amount of red-bag. (Howitzers have basically two parts to aiming: 1) The elevation of the barrel from horizontal, and the 2) amount of powder used.)

If I recall, there were three types of powder charges, green-bag, white-bag, and red-bag.

The green and white bag charges are subdivided into smaller parts. These parts are in separate small cloth bags. Theses bags are numbered and all the bags for one charge are sewn together. The command from the Fire Direction Center tells the crew what bags to use. The gun crew tears off and loads the correct number of bags. The junior crewman takes the remaining bags, runs back a bit to the rear of the cannon and holds the remaining bags over his head so the gun crew chief can verify that the correct amount of powder is in the cannon.

The red-bag is a large single charge and only used with certain special cannon shells. This is probably what the Marines were firing a lot of when they burned out the cannon barrels.

And yes, miscounting the number of bags used can get a people killed. One gun crew practicing at Ft Sill didn’t count right and dropped a cannon shell onto a formation of recruits. Killed and wounded over 25, iirc.

There are also some interesting things in the pictures of that article.

In the first picture of the article, of a M777 firing you can see a couple of what looks like boxes attached to the top of the cannon. These are electronic devices that provide the gun crew very specific and precise information, such as gps location. You can also see the antenna for them on the right hand side of the picture.

In the pictures of Ukrainian M777’s I have not seen those items. Which means that more time consuming methods of positioning the cannon are used.

The artillery term for positioning the cannon is ‘laying’. Make of this what you will.

Another thing I find interesting are all the pictures of the palletized cannon shells. Units used to spend a lot of their time hauling loose rounds from the depot to the ammunition trucks, to the cannon, back to the trucks, etc. And the gun crew had to keep managing the ammunition and the packaging. Plus there was always the danger that a round would be damaged. The palletized system looks to save a lot of time, energy, and focus.

If the answer to that is yes, then the governor can fuck right off… if the answer is no… then we’ll see you in the Supreme Court.

I believe the tribal nations in Oklahoma and the Oklahoma state government are tussling with the possible reality that the eastern half of the state is tribal land in some way or another. The court cases are not so clear, and it’s still being litigated.

That said, in places where tribal lands are very much marked out by treaty (such as here), I have to wonder if tribal leaders have considered maybe providing women’s healthcare services, or inviting Planned Parenthood to set up a division of “Women’s Native Health Services” on their land. Hoo boy.

This would be even more crazy than the feds moving in and taking all the slot machines from every reservation casino (there were five) thirty years ago (May 12, 1992, in fact). The Fort McDowell community, which, in addition to the casino, provided cement across the Valley for builders, moved its cement mixers and gravel loaders to block the one road in and out of the casino…oh and hemmed in the feds. Gov. Fife Symington, in one of his good acts, got everyone to sit down at a table and sign gaming compacts, but it was getting ugly there for a while.

The shot of the Marine watching the 5-ton prime mover is a really good photo. The one that gets me, though is the photo of heat-treatment at Watervliet. That operation, with the automated forge, was a sub-command of our arsenal at Picatinny, and I got to spend some time there. Fascinating place.

wva.army.mil

Yes, I have heard that Watervliet is a fascinating place although I have never been there.

My favorite Watervliet story is the pre-First Gulf War story about the 2 week GBU-28 development.

The US Army had identified a lot of Iraqi bunkers prior to the beginning of Desert Storm and needed a way to destroy them.

At the same time the US Army was getting rid of the old 8” heavy artillery. And had a _lot_ of the old cannon barrels laying around.

Some engineers figured out, over the course of a weekend, that they could fill those cannon barrels with explosive, stick an Air Force guided bomb ‘thingie’ on it and it would penetrate deep into a bunker complex before blowing up.

So, the next week, they built two test versions and flew them out to the test range, while the paint was still wet. They dropped the first one without fuze, just to see how deep it would penetrate. It penetrated so deeply that the test crew finally just gave up digging for it.

The second test was against a 22ft thick heavily reinforced wall. It did penetrate the wall and continued on for almost another half-mile.

Corporate propaganda, but still covers the ground:

Watervliet and Picatinny are the best of Army Materiel history. Watervliet is the entrance to the Erie Canal, the commander’s house sits on the original masonry. Picatinny took a bazooka from drawing board to combat in a couple weeks when North Korean T-34s were shrugging off the WWII model. They made cannon balls for Washington and the explosive jackets for the Manhattan Project. (They also blew themselves off the NJ map in 1926, creating the DoD Explosives Safety Board.)

“Government mandated pregnancy”

If they are “preborn” they are not babies

The only preborn I recognize are Alia, Leto and Ghanima Atreides from the Dune books. (All three were exposed to an overdose of spice while in utero.) Alia became an Abomination, Leto would have been an Abomination except that he came to an agreement with a powerful ancestral memory to keep off other ancestral memories, and Ghanima apparently did some mind-blocking trick.

And why yes, this is all fiction. Just as “preborn babies” don’t exist in this world.

Grrr… Looking at the phone service being especially hit. Guess who I use…

“Smishing” Scam Texts Are Getting More Common (and More Annoying)

You’ve probably gotten one already: a text from a strange number (maybe even your own) advertising CBD gummies, confirming a package delivery, or letting you know a bill has been paid, complete with a seemingly unsuspecting link. These texts are scams called “smishing,” and apparently they are on the rise.

Agents of chaos that are sending these texts are “smishing,” which is a portmanteau of SMS and phishing, and they are trying to get a hold of your personal information and your money. First, smishers will send you a text typically masquerading as a reputable company. Common smishing attempts specifically involve parcel carriers like UPS, FedEx, or Amazon informing someone that their package has been delivered, reports the New York Times citing Teltech. Reader’s Digest also states that other tactics involve fake texts from your bank, or friendly texts using a common name. The messages almost always have a link to an unsuspecting malware download.

*snip*

There has been some anecdotal evidence popping up recently to indicate an uptick in smishing attempts across the country. If there was any reason to switch to AT&T, the Verge reports that Verizon users are specifically being hit hard by smishing. The Verge also cited a Verizon spokesperson who said that the company is aware of the issue and is working with law enforcement to crack down.

I’ve been thinking of how Buffalo shooter *only* shot 13 people. Sounds like police were called within a minute and were on site in 5 or less. The security guard engaged and shot him a few times but the armor spared the shooter, who then killed the security guard. That exchange probably chewed up a good portion of those 5 minutes, cutting down the total amount of time for free carnage.

And I’ve seen the video: he was in the market and passed by a white cashier not shooting him. I did not hear in the video but allegedly the shooter said sorry as he passed by that cashier.

stochastic terrorism - The use of mass public communication, usually against a particular individual or group, which incites or inspires acts of terrorism which are statistically probable but happen seemingly at random.

en.wiktionary.org

Stochastic terrorism is “the public demonization of a person or group resulting in the incitement of a violent act, which is statistically probable but whose specifics cannot be predicted.”

The word stochastic, in everyday language, means “random.” Terrorism, here, refers to “violence motivated by ideology.”

Here’s the idea behind stochastic terrorism:

1. A leader or organization uses rhetoric in the mass media against a group of people.
2. This rhetoric, while hostile or hateful, doesn’t explicitly tell someone to carry out an act of violence against that group, but a person, feeling threatened, is motivated to do so as a result.
3. That individual act of political violence can’t be predicted as such, but that violence will happen is much more probable thanks to the rhetoric.
4. This rhetoric is thus called stochastic terrorism because of the way it incites random violence.

dictionary.com

National Security Experts Warn Trump “Is Promoting Terrorism”

In the waning days of his presidency, Donald Trump is engaged in a deliberate campaign of terrorism aimed at Americans who oppose him politically. That description of his actions is neither a metaphor nor hyperbole—it is the assessment of veteran national security experts, whose view of the political violence being stoked by the outgoing president is echoed by law enforcement and political leaders. As Trump has pushed a litany of lies and conspiracy theories claiming that the 2020 election was “stolen” from him through “massive fraud,” he has stirred his most extreme supporters to menace public officials, election workers, and his Democratic and Republican critics alike. Over the past four years, numerous perpetrators of threats and violence have directly invoked the president and his rhetoric, and recent gatherings by far-right groups in support of Trump’s efforts to reverse his election defeat have led to beatings, stabbings and a shooting.

Trump is using a tactic known as “stochastic terrorism,” says Juliette Kayyem, a national security expert and former assistant secretary at the Department of Homeland Security. It’s a method of political incitement that provokes random acts of extremist violence, in which the instigator uses rhetoric ambiguous enough to give himself and his allies plausible deniability for any resulting bloodshed. Violent threats or attacks linked to the rhetoric usually generate muted denials and equivocal denunciations, or claims to have been “joking,” as Trump and those speaking on his behalf have routinely hidden behind.

w/r/t whether the upcoming (more than likely) ban establishes an official religion, it absolutely privileges one religion (Evangelical Christianity) over others.

sunday Mailbag electoral-vote.com

M.R. in Acton, MA, writes:… In Judaism, a fetus does not have the same personhood status as one who is already living and functioning in the world. The Talmud asserts that the fetus is “mere fluid” for the first 40 days and, following this period, the fetus is regarded as a physical part of the pregnant individual’s body.

In fact, up until and into the onset of labor and childbirth, if a fetus is endangering the life of a woman, performing an abortion is a religious requirement. The Mishnah (representing the first generation of Talmudic rabbis) states it graphically: “they cut up the fetus inside here and take it out limb by limb, because her life comes before its life.”

I believe the rabbis stated the issue in such grotesque terms on purpose. The horrifying image of an almost-born fetus being dismembered in the womb emphasizes the point: No matter how “late-term” the pregnancy, no matter how difficult it may be to proceed with an abortion, the woman’s life must always come first.

Legally requiring a woman to carry a life-threatening pregnancy to term is not only misogynist, it is an infringement on our religious freedom as Jews to exercise our Jewish values in such dire situations.

and no, that would not be the same as some religion claiming human sacrifice as a sacred rite

Conservative media is familiar with Buffalo suspect’s alleged ‘theory’

The suspect in Saturday’s killing of 10 people at a Buffalo supermarket allegedly wrote a document endorsing “great replacement theory,” a once-fringe racist idea that became a popular refrain among media figures such as Tucker Carlson and Laura Ingraham of Fox News and conservative writer Ann Coulter.

Before the shooting rampage that also left three wounded, the suspect, Payton S. Gendron, 18, allegedly posted a lengthy document invoking the idea that White Americans were at risk of being “replaced” by people of color because of immigration and higher birthrates.

*snip*

The theory was once confined to far-right White extremists, who cast immigration as part of a plot by “elites” to take political and economic power away from White people. It has gained broader circulation in recent years as a talking point among prominent conservative media figures.

*snip*

Other Fox News hosts besides Carlson have picked up the theme, giving it a veneer of respectability, at least within the conservative media ecosystem.

*snip*

[The article goes through a long list of these figures]

Glenn never fails to disappoint

I’ve said this before, but I was working for a summer language institute in Bloomington, IN when one of Matt Hale’s followers continued his slaughter by targeting a Korean church literally just a few blocks from the dorm where our many Asian and non-Asain students were housed. He killed a Korean grad student on a Sunday morning as the student left a Korean church. As I recall he also went to Evanston Il and killed basketball coach Ricky Birdsong, and then injured several orthodox Jews and another Black person.

Fuck Greenwald. He wanted to make a name for himself. That’s all. He did so by representing an eliminationist nazi.

It is the fact that Gisele recognized the signs of a pending stroke and they went to one of the better (probably the best) hospital systems in PA that he will be fine.

Response time really matters with strokes. If caught quickly enough, most/all damage can be prevented.

The big secret he let slip is that Twitter uses a sample size of 100 to determine the ratio of bots to real users. That is laughingly absurd. The only plausible reason to use a sample size that small is to lie about the actual ratio. It wouldn’t be any more effort for them to sample a million accounts.

Here is what I was talking about:

Serbia also has maintained a pro-Russian stance. To be fair, this alliance pre-dates World War 1.

One interesting anecdote is that during World War 1 most Serbians lived in the country of Serbia. However some ethnic Serbians lived in neighboring Austrian-ruled lands. When Austria went to war, the ethnic Serbians resident in Austro-Hungry were mobilized and some were stationed along the Serbian border.

During the fighting, the Serbian National Army managed to surround an Austro-Hungarian regiment composed of ethnic Serbians. When the Serbian Army demanded their surrender, the ethnic Serbian regiment replied that “Serbians never surrender”.

Not sure how that worked out for the participants. It being the Balkans, probably not well.

The Buffalo white supremacist mass murderer is bad enough by himself, but what is another very real danger is the ongoing test-run of the vast right wing propaganda support network.

Right now Fox News, the right wing Twitter-verse and all the other well-known charlatans, racist clowns and liar outlets are currently testing the bounds and plausible deniability limits on this most recent white terrorist attack. This is all in their effort to effectively control the messaging starting in 2025 when they believe they will have full control of the country and will be able to launch mass arrests, mass detainments and eventual mass murder using direct government assets. They will have to sell these actions to the 75% of white men and about 50% of white women who currently still support the MAGA carnival of fascism even though it will cost the lives and freedoms of their own friends and family members. And they will buy it just as other heinous xenophobic purges have shown us throughout world history.

The leaked draft of the abortion opinion is hypocritical concern trolling—and proof that the Court’s majority is an extension of the Republican Party.

This one has a lead photo that shows a woman dead of an unsafe abortion, so be very careful if you open it.

In one of the Spanish language newspapers I read online either late last night or early this morning, a representative of the Mexican consulate in New York reported to the Mexican government that no Mexican citizens were killed in yesterday’s racist mass murder. And yeah, El Pais en Spain is very clear what it thinks, none of this wishy washy shiz:

El autor de la matanza racista en Búfalo publicó un detallado plan de su ataque

“The perpetrator of the racist slaughter in Buffalo published a detailed plan of his attack.”

Wishing our press would call it what it is…racist slaughter.

/back to reading about the collapse of a section Línea 12 of the Mexico City Metro on May 3, 2021, which killed 26 people and injured 98. Because the government is about to clear or move away the section of the elevated railway that collapsed, and attorneys for the dead and injured believe this will destroy or obscure evidence in finding fault. Which, to be honest, the Mexico City government and the national government want to Go Away.

Jesus! Lots of things the Mexican national government would like to go away, like the rape and murder of Debanhi Escobar in Monterrey, Nueva Leon in April. The current president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), distinguished himself /////// by telling people to basically stop thinking about it at the beginning, before her body was found in a well and before the private autopsy which alleges Escobar had been sexually assaulted and injured.

Mass shootings will continue until White Replacement stops!!!

Most “mass” shootings are not racially motivated — La Vegas, the numerous school shootings, the Pulse night club shooting, etc — as well as shootings that involve gang members. Thanks to Scalia and the abominable Heller decision, there is a free-for-all out there. There is no hope for recovery until Heller can be overturned but that is unlikely while SCOTUS remains in Federalist Society hands.

Shit! That’s 35 miles north of you guys!

Hope it doesn’t hold together.

Mean while, in South Austin, the Space Dragon has consumed the moon and will swallow it for around 80 minutes.

There will be witches on broomsticks. Goblins. Shades of all kinds. Wars, rumors of wars, and sightings of the Dogs of War across the face of the earth. As the moon turns blood red, the screams of the damned will ring across the Heavens.

Then, the Space Dragon will cough up the moon, accompanied by a fair amount of Detritus. Which is gonna hurt, in a Disc-Worldian sort of way, because Detritus is a big motherfucker.

Then everything will be back to normal and the Great Cosmic Turtle, A’Tuin, supporting four gigantic elephants who support the World, will continue its swim through the Universe.

Because when I think of a furry, if I think of one at all, which I really don’t, it is certainly not as a sociopathic Neo-Nazi who specifically targeted a food store in a Black neighborhood over a hundred miles away from his home so he could kill as many Black people as possible in the shortest possible time.

That’s certainly a possibility.

Thoughts from this uninvolved, unconnected, swag (swag - scientific wild @ss guess) maker are:

My first guess, though would be that the US did not want to risk losing state of the art electronics to Russia.

My second guess would be that the Ukrainians do not have all of the equipment that would be required to use it. Perhaps because they are still mostly on the old Soviet artillery framework rather than the current NATO framework. Or maybe the allocated aid funds would be better spent on other things.

My third guess would be that the Ukrainians have not yet been trained on how to use that equipment and there is not enough time or people to do that training right now.

Unless the Murdochs and their prime time stars are working directly for Putin (always possible), this attack seems to be the consequence of the vile white supremacist propaganda that the right wing has been promoting for years. Certainly they seem to be supporting Putin in the conflict with Ukraine, but this racist hatred has been an integral part of the United States political landscape since the Founding Fathers allowed slavery to exist when our republic came into existence and it expanded with the Know Nothings in the 1850’s. The Buffalo rampage is akin to the Pittsburgh synagogue massacre in 2018, as well as the El Paso slaughter in 2019.

If even a fraction of the numbers they have been yammering about for years were true, all of Mexico, the Carribean, and Central and South America would have emptied out into the US.

When they say “millions” per what, month, week, year? The population of the US increases by about 1-2 million per year. Apparently *no one* is having children at all if this “millions” bullshit is true.

I hope he wins! Always an entertaining read:

In little more than a year in Congress, Rep. Madison Cawthorn, R-N.C., has become famous in political circles. On Tuesday, that could cost him his job.

“He’s a hot mess,” Susan Newman, 53, a teacher from nearby Laurel Park who voted for Cawthorn two years ago, said in the parking lot of an Ingles grocery store. “I really don’t see him doing anything in the district — and he just keeps getting in trouble.”

That’s in part because of a striking pattern of unusual behavior: speeding without a valid driver’s license; taking a firearm through security at an airport; wearing lingerie in photos; appearing in a video in which a staffer pantomimes a grab for his groin; gyrating naked on top of another man in bed; accusing unnamed lawmakers of inhaling cocaine and inviting him to an orgy; promoting a cryptocurrency in ways that prompted critics to claim he engaged in insider trading; and calling Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy “a thug.”

He should lay off the pain pills.

Had a trip to Frankfurt yesterday to see daughter who is staying there.

Went to the Musem for Modern Art, Marcel Duchamp exhibit, including a copy of The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even, which has been one of the highlights of my time on Earth.

Have been a fan of Duchamp and Dada ever since I discovered them as a young teenager (through friends and family, nobody in our school began to cover those topics)

Thomas Jefferson once secretly wrote to Congress that the US would try to drive Native Americans into debt in order to take their land.

The US president’s note to lawmakers was referenced in a report from the Interior Department published Wednesday.

“In 1803, President Thomas Jefferson delivered a Confidential Message to Congress on Indian Policy explaining a strategy to dispossess Indian Tribes of their territories in part by assimilation,” the report said.

According to the report, Jefferson believed “a policy of assimilation would make it easier and less costly in lives and funding for the United States to separate Indian Tribes from their territories.”

Executed alongside the assimilation policy would be a process to encourage Native Americans to make purchases with credit. The hope, according to the report, was that they would fall into debt, meaning Indian tribes would have to “cede their land” to the US.

“Heckuva job, Brownie Pootie”…..

Sweden has decided to follow neighboring Finland and apply for NATO membership, ending more than 200 years of military nonalignment because of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, officials said Monday.

Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson called it “a historic change in our country’s security policy” as she addressed lawmakers in the Swedish capital.

“Sweden needs formal security guarantees that come with membership in NATO,” Andersson said, adding that the country was acting together with Finland, whose government announced on Sunday it would seek to to join the alliance.

Andersson was expected to formally announce the Swedish government’s decision later Monday together with opposition leader Ulf Kristersson.

So I’ll be curious to hear about this immigration crisis. This is a long story from Spain’s El Pais, in Spanish, but this is the gist of it.

People are waiting outside consulates in Havana to try and get visas to Mexico or Panama. It used to be (at least for Mexico) that Cubans didn’t need visas, but now they do. Why? Because there is a serious migration of Cubans to the USA. Nicaragua doesn’t require visas, but to get further north, Cubans pretty much have to expect to spend thousands of dollars and put themselves into the hands of coyotes and pay bribes to local officials to look the other way.

The numbers from the US side tell it all. In the last six months, the number of Cubans crossing the border has gone from 8,000 in December, to 9,700 in January, to nearly 18,000 in February, 32,000 in March and 35,000 in April. It’s called a silent Mariel boatlift. And why is this happening? Deteriorating economic conditions in Cuba, basically. The causes of the exodus are very elegantly described in this one sentence:

Las causas del actual éxodo son diversas, aunque quizás la principal sea el deterioro galopante de las condiciones de vida y el calvario en que se ha convertido la sobrevivencia en Cuba debido a la agudísima crisis que el país atraviesa, agravada por la pandemia, la inflación derivada del llamado “ordenamiento monetario”, la ineficiencia del sistema productivo estatal y la lentitud de las reformas económicas.

There’s no good solution, either

There’s more in the article, if your Spanish is up to it, it’s worth a read. elpais.com

Also, Venezuela is desperate for money, so it is planning stock sales in publicly owned businesses (most of which were expropriated by the government under the Chavista and Maduro regimes). More in English here:

Destruction is always faster and easier than construction. The Republican Party has morphed into the apotheosis of a destructive agency of our democracy. OTOH some might argue this is what we have always been, that every time some of us try to surmount the evil of our true heritage of slavery and genocide and white supremacy, our nation eventually slides back into its toxic origins.

New ones could, yes. However, the law is written so that if an existing service attempts to cut off service to Texas, anyone in Texas is allowed to sue the company to force them to provide service. While the enforceability of such an order is dubious, that isn’t the point; the point is to nickel-and-dime Twitter with frivolous lawsuits so that they eventually give up on trying to moderate content altogether, which will likely result in the end of Twitter, since, as I pointed out once before, fuck Nazis.

What was once “disqualifying garbage” is now a minimum mandatory position in order to ensure nomination.

I started saying years ago that Tea Party rhetoric going unchallenged in the GOP would lead to an attention-seeking race to the bottom of the barrel, and they are still on their way down.

They aren’t even in free fall at the moment; it’s a full-power dive straight down.

If the Ukrainians get to Vovchansk, they can cut the direct supply lines between Belgorod and Kupyansk - and therefore to Izyum, which puts the Russian’s Donbas offensive in serious trouble.

I do wonder how Ukraine is going to get its citizens back without the direct support of the rest of the world. As awesome as it has been at pushing back Russia, it doesn’t have an invasion force.

Seems like these wives of the separatist fighters are asking for the authorities’ help in returning their guys back. Naming the units, saying they’re not deserters and they haven’t surrendered to the Ukrainians, but that they were defeated in combat and those who could retreated - and that many of the separatist’s forces were killed or wounded. Apparently, those poor bastards were up against Ukrainian armor and all those luckless SOB’s had were rifles. They were also saying that Russia is not letting them in.

Don’t know if they’re angry, but definitely worried (which is understandable on a human level).

Looks like McDonald’s is leaving Russia:

McDonald’s is exiting Russia over its invasion of Ukraine, pulling out of a market it’s been a part of for 32 years. The fast-food giant had previously paused its operations in Russia less than two weeks into the brutal conflict being waged over Ukraine’s future.

McDonald’s wants to sell its entire slate of restaurants in the country to a Russian buyer. To prepare for that sale, it will start “de-arching” its restaurants — stripping them of its trademark signs, menus and branding.

To me, it looks like McD’s is cutting its losses, figuring that even if the war ends soon, it’s not gonna be safe or profitable to reopen in Russia anytime soon. The government is whipping up all sorts of anti-US sentiment and as one of the symbols of the “decadent West,” they’re gonna be the target of all sorts of anger and potential violence.

Austria-Hungary was also a failed “state”; it didn’t stop them from unleashing the most devastating war in history (to that point) and a prelude to the greater disaster that followed. We are infested with allies of Putin who are doing everything possible to harm the Ukrainian cause.

Why is no one talking about Trump’s attempt to derail further spending on Ukraine? Is it solely because of the Buffalo massacre?

The GOP had the chance of holding Obama up as proof that the American Dream had been achieved, namely that anyone who works hard enough can make it to the Highest Office in the Land.

It’s always about blaming the victim, always about finding some way to say that the victim failed to measure up and thus deserved their fate(s). Next step is finding a way to make the shooter out to be the victim, which they’re already hard at work doing by pretending that his motivation was a black man driving a car into a crowd of white people and not the wild-eyed manifesto that spells it all out.
