Colbert: PA’s Republican Primary Is a MAGA Battle Royale; Putin Unfazed by Sweden & Finland NATO Bids

Polls were still open in Pennsylvania when Stephen taped this show, so we’ll have to wait to find out which brand of crazy GOP primary voters prefer. Over in Russia, Vladimir Putin tried his best to shrug off news that two neighboring countries may soon join NATO. #Colbert #Comedy #Monologue

Gohmert has a fetish for legislation no one asks for or supports.

Rep. Louie Gohmert, the outspoken and undauntable Texas conservative, has introduced another bill to return the District of Columbia to Maryland, the state that donated the land to the federal government two centuries ago.
Gohmert last introduced a retrocession proposal in 2007, when the idea was gaining support from conservative pundits like George Will. The newest bill has no co-sponsors so far.

19
jaunte  May 18, 2022 • 11:10:56am

There’s always a catch:

“…Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.), through a spokesman, expressed appreciation for Gohmert’s idea, but warned that exempting D.C. residents from the federal income tax would cause the city to lose federal funding as if it were a state. She urged Gohmert and other lawmakers to support simply making D.C. a state.”

About that women’s film festival: Last night’s event was a Zonta-sponsored showing of LunaFest 2022, an annual competition of short films by/about women. It’s funded by an energy protein bar company that seems more than casually linked to SJW movement. They make the program available to women’s groups.

The formula issue appears to be with special formulas for babies with health conditions. These babies are going to be fine, but the parents will have incurred a huge bill if they don’t have good insurance.

Both children required a special, amino acid-based formula because they have short bowel syndrome — a condition meaning they are unable to efficiently digest food because they have fewer intestines.

While one child was discharged Tuesday, the other remained at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in stable condition after receiving care for dehydration and complications from a lack of nutrients they would normally receive through specialized formulas produced by Abbott Laboratories.

Two children hospitalized in Tennessee due to national baby formula shortage (USA Today via MSN)

A bit of local news.

“Support the Albany high girls track team as we protest the gender biased dress code,” the petition’s description reads. “The athletic administration staff is attempting to exclude us from our sport as a result of the misinterpretation of the dress code. We’re being punished for practicing in sports bras in the presence of male coaches, while the boys team was asked nicely to put shirts back on and was not punished.”

The petition has garnered more than 2,700 signatures as of Wednesday.

After the practice incident, the girls track team came back to the school to watch a lacrosse game. Three security guards and Chapple were waiting and told the girls’ track team they could not attend.

As a result, 13 members of the girls’ track and field team were suspended on Friday, which left just two members of the team to compete in the Shenendehowa Invitational later that night. Subsequently, Albany did not score a single point as a team at the event.

The next day, Chapple hand-delivered a letter to each suspended athlete, explaining the discipline. According to the Times Union, the letters stated the student athletes used vulgar language during their exchange with Chapple and security at the lacrosse game.

Oh no here comes covid part deux! (kidding this is kewl)

A cave exploration team has discovered a giant karst sinkhole in Leye County, south China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, bringing Leye’s number of such sinkholes to 30.

Zhang Yuanhai, a senior engineer with the Institute of Karst Geology of China Geological Survey, said the sinkhole, located near Ping’e village under Luoxi township, measures 306 m in length, 150 m in width and 192 m in depth, with its volume exceeding 5 million cubic meters, and can be categorized as a large sinkhole.

Zhang said that there are three big caves in the wall, which are presumed to be the remains of the early evolution of the sinkhole. The bottom of the sinkhole has a well-preserved primitive forest.

Chen Lixin, leader of the Guangxi 702 cave expedition team, said the ancient trees growing at the bottom are nearly 40 meters high, and the dense shade plants are up to one’s shoulders.

re: #43 Backwoods_Sleuth

Not sure why the Ukrainians agreed to this. But I suspect that the Ukrainians did this with eyes wide open. The 2014 experience in Ilovaisk is burned into their memories.

During the 2014 Russian supported insurrection in the DonBas, a Ukrainian battalion defeated and surrounded many of the insurrectionists. Suddenly they found themselves surrounded by units presumed to be from the Russian Army crossing the border.

The Ukrainians negotiated with the surrounding units and there was an agreement that the Ukrainians could retreat along an agreed upon corridor. As the Ukrainians retreated the Russians opened fire and massacred the retreating Ukrainians.

One thing to remember is that the Ukrainians negotiated with, and were betrayed by, Russians that they knew personally. And in several cases had served with in the Soviet Army.

Battle of Ilovaisk

Although Ukrainian forces were able to enter the city on 18 August, they were encircled between 24 and 26 August by overwhelming Russian military forces that crossed the border, joining the battle. After days of encirclement, Ukrainian commander Yuriy Bereza came to an agreement with Russian commanders in Ilovaisk to allow Ukrainian troops to withdraw from the city. This agreement was not honoured, and many soldiers died whilst trying to escape.

en.wikipedia.org

And the Ukrainians still remember it:

I mentioned the other day that ~115,000 Cubans had left Cuba in the last several months with the intention of goingvto the USA. Mexico, which had previously allowed Cubans to enter without a visa, now requires one. Therefore, Cubans are going to Nicaragua because a visa is not required.

That is background for a story from El Pais today, where thousands of Nicaraguans have fled Nicaragua in the last several months because the Ortega dictatorship is, well, everything you would expect from a dictatorship. The story centers around a human rights lawyer, Pablo Cuevas, who picked up with his entire family and left, choosing to swim the Río Bravo (US Rio Grande) to get into the USA, and a guy in Nicaragua who teaches swim lessons to those who want to try and swim the US-Mexico border.

The warning is clear, though, the river is dangerous. Ten Nicaraguans died in March and April attempting to cross. The Cuevas family was successful and the attorney is now in Florida.

There’s people in the hospital right now in need of kidneys, or bone marrow, or part of a liver. People who will die if nobody donates these parts for them.

That doesn’t entitle them to mine. They’re definitely people, their lives are at stake, but it’s still absolutely my call if I want to be selfish or generous with my body and its parts.

I do not have a uterus, vagina or two X chromosomes so I’m not the best person to comment on abortion.

But we need to acknowledge the fetus is quite literally connected to (and held within) a womans body. Each can affect the other in a variety of ways.

An abortion discussion predicated on the basis that mother and baby are entirely separate entities is missing the point.

Turn off your car alarm!

Interesting question!

There is some discussion on what and how lyrebirds do with sounds:.

I did not know the likely answer until I did some looking around. (Of course, with the information on the internet being what it is, I may still not know.)

Lyrebird legends abound, but not all the stories are true. Let’s sort fact from fiction

[There] is a very famous segment of a very famous series called Life of Birds. It stars David Attenborough and it is gorgeous. And it also leads you down the garden path a little, using the magic of television.

*snip*
According to analysis from Dr Hollis Taylor from the University of Sydney, the bird in this clip is actually at least two birds, both of whom were raised in captivity.

The main one, who mimicked drills, hammers and construction sounds was Chook, who hatched at Healesville Sanctuary and lived out his days at the Adelaide Zoo.

He learnt some of those sounds while the panda enclosure was being built.

*snip*

The keepers at the Adelaide Zoo said everyone was very impressed with Chook’s singing … except for the female lyrebirds, who never once agreed to breed with him based on his anthropogenic mimicry.
*snip*

:(
abc.net.au

Also:

Lyrebirds mimicking chainsaws: fact or lie?

The lyrebird is considered one of Australia’s best-known birds — you might recognise them from our 10 cent coin — but do we really know them? Famed for their spectacular courtship display, you may have seen footage of lyrebirds mimicking human noises such as chainsaws and camera clicks.

But do lyrebirds in the wild really mimic chainsaws? Yes, if you search the internet; no, if you read the literature.

That’s what I would recommend to Ukrainians at this point if they want to come to the US. Don’t go to the Mexican border, the chances are very high that you will be denied entry just because the border is being overwhelmed right now.

Theoretically asylum seekers are supposed to apply in the “first safe state they come to” but as we know from previous and current mass migrations, that’s not how it works out a lot of the time.

Nope. It’s the real deal.

Monkeypox was first discovered in 1958 when two outbreaks of a pox-like disease occurred in colonies of monkeys kept for research, hence the name ‘monkeypox.’ The first human case of monkeypox was recorded in 1970 in the Democratic Republic of Congo during a period of intensified effort to eliminate smallpox. But yes, not messing around with monkeys is also good advice.

Monkeypox and Smallpox Vaccine Guidance

When properly administered before exposure to monkeypox vaccines are effective at protecting people against monkeypox.

ACAM200 and JYNNEOSTM (also known as Imvamune or Imvanex) are the two currently licensed vaccines in the United States to prevent smallpox. JYNNEOS is also licensed specifically to prevent monkeypox.

If this happens, our country is finished. The Federalist Society would have succeeded in its objective and we will devolve into 50 squabbling states. Putin never forgave the West for the disintegration of the Soviet Union and this would be his payback — the United States dying courtesy of the ascendancy of Trumpism and the Federalist Society. It is a nightmare world that faces us: we lived during the brief time that SCOTUS was a force for good and justice, but that time has ended. Our nation is now too divided for any legislative solution.

Or am I being too pessimistic about our resiliency? We are regressing at an accelerated pace and it’s not clear how we can reverse course.

Since school, when in the 10th grade we went to military training camps for two weeks, I was amazed, perplexed and surprised - why is it so?! Why are we only allowed to fire 6 rounds? Indeed, in order to ‘feel’ the assault rifle you need at least 15 rounds in a magazine, so the person could shoot 2-4 single rounds and then try bursts of 4-5 rounds. Yet to do it properly, of course everyone needs a whole magazine - 30 rounds! My opinion is that the target shooting with 6 rounds which is en-masse used in Russians army and MIA - is just a mockery of military training!!!

Oh Jesus! I tried that on the guys at the church who want the state of Arizona to execute women who get abortions and they UTTERLY rejected it. Why? Because another of their beliefs is that God created the world 6,000 years ago, literal Adam & Eve, etc.

Their thinking is absolutely black and white. There are no justifiable killings in their mind. The example we discussed was that of a father who killed a man who he caught on his property sexually assaulting his young daughter. There was, in these guys’ minds, no affirmative defense for this murder (like that the perp was in the act of raping his child). They thought the father should be punished for killing, period. Not even a heat of passion defense was sufficient for these guys. In Texas, “sudden passion” is an affirmative defense. But you can’t sway these asshats.

The question is when does a fetus become a person.

The rabid religious types wants a zygote to be a person.

It does not make sense unless you believe that some god implants a soul into a zygote.

And even then it makes no sense, given the percentage of fertilzed ova that fail to implant (around 50 percent in nature). Even more ova implant but fail to send off the hormonal signals which stop menstruation, then there are miscarriages for all sorts of reasons (e.g., embryo or fetus too damaged genetically or otherwise incompatiblewith life). When I’m being heavily sarcastic. I ask why, if life starts at conception, why “God” appears to be the greatest abortionist, since so many conceptions fail.

My other concern is how women are going to be treated as murderers if miscarriage occurs, and everything a woman does is under the microscope. Because you know there’s some “expert” somewhere who thinks a woman eating crackers for morning sickness helped to cause her miscarriage. (Trying to be as weirdly crazy and outrageous as possible, but I know I haven’t got it.)

Oil prices are around $100 per barrel. That would correspond to prices of around $3 historically. Instead, there’s a premium of over $1 on that.

Why?

Because energy companies and refiners are raking in coin on the spread and the tight supply purposefully limited by them (there’s nothing stopping them from producing more except greed).

Yup. I and a neighbor, who is one block away and 1 digit different than my street address, have been notifying each other of the receipt of misdirected packages and returning them for years now.

That has encompassed all but two of my missing packages.

One of those was accidentally delivered to my next door neighbor when I received their package by mistake. And the second mysteriously showed up at my door 4 days after it was supposedly delivered to me.

For some time, I had toyed with the idea of buying a Tesla. I am glad to see that Elon himself has decisively resolved that conundrum: NO WAY IN HELL.

There are getting to be a lot of EVs around, good ones.

All of the times I’ve said I wont buy a Tesla because Elon Musk is garbage, and the company has issues even without considering him… well I see people are starting to finally get it.

Tesla is going to eventually be the IPhone of Cars. EVs for tech bros and hipsters that don’t actually want a car, but a rolling app platform that they can show off to everyone. A device that can’t be repaired, costs a fortune, is designed to be replaced every couple of years, and is a few years behind on new tech while pretending they are cutting edge (They haven’t quite got here yet but when *everyone* is making EVs this will happen).

That was a major selling point for electrics back in the horseless carriage days. An IC car had to be cranked to start, which could be downright dangerous if the engine backfired and twisted the crank back on an inattentive driver. They were also cantankerous, smelly, and prone to breakdowns. In the electric, you just turned a switch and drove away. The electric’s range, typically 25 miles, was as much as many IC cars were likely to manage before they broke down. For a while it looked like either one, IC or electric, could become dominant in the future. Then IC technology began to advance by leaps and bounds, while electric remained stagnant for the best part of a hundred years.

I read a book by Edwin Black that implied that there was a conspiracy against electric cars by the oil interests (or interest, singular, since this was in Standard Oil’s time.)

The evidence was that Edison had developed a new kind of battery technology, likely a new chemical formulation. The factory burned mysteriously. To me, the reader, it seemed much like the trolley conspiracy that would happen 30 years later.

For many years, the UK was by far the largest user of electric road vehicles, mostly milk floats.
When I was a very small boy in England in the early 50s, our milkman, and many others, had a horsedrawn cart. They had all switched to electrics within a few years and now the milk float is quickly going the way of the horse cart as home delivery disappears. COVID and the resugence of grocery delivery may have stopped or even reversed this process, though most operators use conventional vans or light trucks.

I’m still wondering what the backup plan is when the VR goes out and you are in the middle of nowhere. (Or, when I described a current location as that, as one Brit in his clipped accent noted: “Oh no. That’s miles from here.”)

Or how about when the VR goes tits up while you’re driving on a freeway at 70+ MPH.

For example, VR technology to replace windows is just pants-on-head stupid.

Nothing could be worth introducing entirely new and catastrophic failure modes into the design.

You just need a can of spray paint. The cameras are going to be in specific places, probably two or three. Even losing one camera will cripple it.

To be fair, this looks like part of the self-driving car dream, and it is true that a 100% self driving car would have no need of windows.

But that’s a long way off, IMO.

I’m imagining the VR system going out on 635 here in Dallas during rush hour. At least you won’t see what killed you.

Hey… my iPhone 8 has been working for years, with no problems at all, knock wood. Same with the ones before that. Never had one give me any trouble. I have upgraded from time to time to get better photos.

I’m still using my iPhone 6 but it no longer can handle LGF over about 50 comments.

Musk is right. Yale University is the epicenter of the virus attempting to destroy civilization: that is where in 1982, right wing legal fanatics assembled to establish the Federalist Society. And our country has been on a downhill trajectory since then.

The original quote from the asshole

“In the past I voted Democrat, because they were (mostly) the kindness party. But they have become the party of division & hate, so I can no longer support them,” he wrote. “Now, watch their dirty tricks campaign against me unfold,” he added with a popcorn emoji.

He rages against the people right-wing assholes hate.

Musk’s Wednesday announcement followed a series of outraged tweets he had made earlier in the day, lashing out against “phony social justice warriors” and the “leftist agenda.”

Here he backpedals

The news made formal what Musk had implied during a conference on Monday, when he declared himself a moderate who had historically “voted overwhelmingly for Democrats” but said he would vote for at least some Republicans in the upcoming election.

This is what Musk lost his mind and alienated customers over. The man has no self-control.

The cause of his ire: Tesla was removed from a stock market index that includes companies dedicated to “ESG,” an acronym for the environment, social issues like diversity and inclusion, and corporate governance.

Fuck this guy.

So, how much shit can Hawthorne stir up between now and next January?

Hawthhorne and the rest of the current hard right clownshoes represent the comedy portion of our right wing tantrum.

The next wave will be the more serious, more disciplined fascists. They mean to take the country over and they mean business. Our media and corporate culture is already adjusting to their rule. Americans must prepare for civil action like general strikes and civil disobedience.

President Joe Biden invokes Defense Production Act to address infant formula shortage (UPI via MSN)

Interesting point.

The stimulus for the pandemic stricken economy may have a recession as it wears off. That might have some major political consequences.

Here is the moment Bill Clinton successfully utilized that to win the 1992 presidential election:

Far as I can tell, Hawley honest-to-God wanted to re-open the plant and send out contaminated formula. After all, only a handful of babies had died. That’s nothing for a party that sacrificed tens of thousands for their right to keep eating at Applebee’s.

For many years the only people pushing large, high capacity propulsion battery research were the navies of the world who needed them for submerged submarine operation. A 2001 lead acid battery is only incrementally more efficient that a 1901 example.

True. And when a submarine hull was breached, the saltwater hitting the battery battery (heh) just went bzzzt and everybody died.

Plus we are 5x the size and elections are administered by the states so 50+ systems

Five times the size is just bullshit.

Five times the size means five times the resources to count.

The 50+ systems is the beginning of the understanding.

US elections are absurdly hard to count.

That’s a fact.

You can decide why that is. I have my opinion, but it is not my problem.
