The GOP cannot spoil their talking point that “The baby formula crisis was caused by government intervention!”

And it was: the government intervening to close a plant that was producing dangerously tainted formula.

Which is the very sort of thing the government is there for.

Dumbest take so far: the $250K severance package is totes in line with what frontline service-level employees can expect to get.

If you let them kill babies with bad formula, there’s no shortage. This is clearly the government’s fault.

I think the Dems need to start messaging around “The GOP wants to feed your baby poisoned formula that has already KILLED 2 infants!”

Use their fear-mongering against them.

The free market would have already cleared this up after a few (hundred) deaths from bad formula.

If only that nasty old government hadn’t imposed prohibitive tariffs on Canadian formula, it could be imported to alleviate the shortage. I blame Biden.//

Death cult GOP was unmoved by 1 million dead from covid, despite all the evidence that masking and vaccination could reduce the spread and severity of the disease and its effects.

Death cult GOP unmoved by gun violence death toll of 40,000+ dead every year from gun violence.

Death cult GOP unmoved by mass shootings killing dozens as in Vegas, or 2 dozen toddlers, as in Sandy Hook.

What’s two babies dead from formula with that backdrop.

These same death cultists are the same pro forced birth extremists who want to sacrifice hundreds of women to die from ectopic pregnancies and other complications from pregnancies so that they can claim that a fetus has superior rights to a woman who is already alive and breathing.

When I was laid off in the third round of layoffs from a previous company, as a mid-tier software developer, I got 2 months’ pay as severance. Spoilers: That ain’t $250k. That ain’t even $250k at my current salary as a highly-paid senior developer. If you’re getting $250k as anything less than a C-tier executive, that’s not severance, that’s a bribe.

Hey, you know that, I know that, I’m sure most Lizards here know that: the bigger question is whether or not the “Mainstream Media” is going to pick up on that point. And, sadly and disgracefully, the general coverage is probably going to go with “not”.

Along with the observation that while the GOP has gone all-in on “protecting” the unborn, their concerns for the already-born seem to somewhat less-developed…

The whole ‘baby formula crisis’ was just the latest in a line of manufactured BS to steer the news cycle away from something they didn’t want discussed (in this case 1/6, Buffalo shooting, R v W leak, etc.)
The shortage though real, isn’t something that should have required Congress to waste time with. We’re talking about 1 product on grocery shelves.

On the other hand, if it happens on you watch, it is your responsibility and your fault, no matter who created the conditions.

One product on shelves that is essential to a baby’s survival.

You can do without most everything else for a period of time. You can find equivalents for most other products.

Babies that aren’t breastfeeding can’t do without formula.

That’s the difference. There’s no equivalent to a baby formula out there that a baby can safely take if they’re not breastfeeding. Babies who were adopted, fostered, or women who can’t/wont breastfeed need formula for their infants and babies. There’s no other way around that.

See if they try to impeach him for saving babies.

Like a man who catches a baby being tossed from a burning building being charged with kidnapping.

I got a dual citizenship about 10 years ago. Ireland. The law was if you had a parent or grandparent born there, you are eligible. You need grandparents birth, marriage and death certificates, your parent’s birth, marriage and death cert, and your birth cert. They did just open it further to great grandparents, but there are a few more steps, my nephew is doing it now. I never had a problem with it, I even was hired a few times for a job in the State Department (you get hired, then maybe you get placed), not an issue with the background checks…

It is pretty wild. The formula shelves at Target were bare. Removing a third of the formula meant people had to buy some other product.

I get that it is, by this stage of our national nervous breakdown, impossible to get the GOP to care about anything other than “own the libs.”

What I’d hope is that the 20-35% of those completely disconnected from politics, who only pay fleeting attention in October of presidential election years, MIGHT be reachable with a message that says something akin to “The GOP is putting your baby’s life in danger! They want to look the other way as poison is fed to your child!”

A U.S. district judge ordered MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell to pay some of voting machine company Smartmatic’s court costs and fees, saying in a ruling on Thursday that some of Lindell’s claims against Smartmatic fall “on the frivolous side of the line.”

“The Court agrees with Smartmatic that Lindell has asserted at least some groundless claims,” U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols wrote in his ruling.

“In particular, the Court concludes that at the very least Lindell’s claim against Smartmatic under the Support or Advocacy Clause falls on the frivolous side of the line (other claims do too). As a result, the Court orders Lindell and his previous counsel to pay some of the fees and costs Smartmatic has incurred defending itself and moving for sanctions,” he added.

Nichols also granted motions from Smartmatic, Dominion Voting Systems and Hamilton Place to dismiss the lawsuits against them.

“Whatever the judge thinks, that’s his opinion,” Lindell told Bloomberg Law in a phone call. “I’ve got lawyers doing more important things like removing these machines from every state.”

There’s a whole lot more waiting for him, should he attempt to continue this fight.

Mostly, however, they’re going to go carrot rather than stick, I would think. A cush gig on Fox where he gets all the attention his toddler-brain needs, and money to blow on vacations with his cousin/aide/cabana boy…

I think his toddler-brain might be a problem, even in that role. The Fox & Friends people are absolute idiots, but they know what their target is and try to hit it. Cawthorne might snipe at anyone.

Both my grandparents on my mom’s side were born in Ireland. Guess I could get dual citizenship. I’m not going to go through the hassle tho’.

This is the reaction of someone who has just woken up in a room full of empty bottles and dust-stained mirrors and has just scraped a last bump together out of the remnants…

Both my grandparents on my mom’s side were born in Ireland. Guess I could get dual citizenship. I’m not going to go through the hassle tho’.

If I had to run to Israel out of desperately fearing a fascist US… how exactly am I supposed to prove I’m Jewish? Do I recite the sh’ma and kaddish and get into a discussion of my bas mitzvah haftorah? Tell some Seinfeld and Groucho Marx jokes? Ask them to dig through their archives to verify stories my since-deceased rabbi told of his time with the Haganah?

re: #16 Egregious Philbin

I got a dual citizenship about 10 years ago. Ireland. The law was if you had a parent or grandparent born there, you are eligible. You need grandparents birth, marriage and death certificates, your parent’s birth, marriage and death cert, and your birth cert.

Italy does that as well. But only if your grandparents or the first generation over did not ever become naturalized US citizens.

Maybe something like calling Marines Jarheads?

Also interesting is the use of the derogatory term for Hungarians (Hunkies) in the song. I don’t remember any derogatory terms for Croatian or Serb ethnicity from growing up in Pittsburgh. And ethnic identity was pretty important back in those day.

The two sides of the family really hated each other. I never heard a term for “Serb” from them, because they never spoke of them.

Strangely, most of the grief from our Irish neighborhood fell on Lithuanians—“Litvaks”. They had arrived recently in flight from the Russian expansion. Germans, of course, were hated pro-forma because of the recent war.

As preschoolers, we had the run of the Bluff neighborhood— turned out in the morning, given food at lunch, and called in at dark. That changed once or twice a year when the Gypsies camped in some empty lots. Our parents actually believed there was a market for stolen children.

Honkey is a Crow Jim term.

It became common usage during the struggles of the 60s-70s, then faded.

Interesting!

Growing up, I remember that as a teenage male, there were certain neighborhoods that unless I was looking for a fight with that neighborhood’s teenagers, it was generally a bad idea to enter. There was neutral ground within a block of schools, but that was it.

I remember hearing occasional discussions about local ‘Gypsies’. But for some reason, I thought of them as a group of poor outsider transients rather than as a specific ethnic group. Not sure where my interpretation came from.

We still were supposed to avoid them. But mostly because they were ‘outsiders’ with unknown trustworthiness. Not because they were presumed criminals and sociopaths. But that was just my understanding. Not sure how I got that view.

Our RC school was on The Hill, just short of where the Civic Auditorium would be built. Walking there I passed through a very Hebrew-reading area (including our butcher, who gave me my pet “Hot Dog” from the cooler where it was born.) There was a small settled Gypsy enclave. One day the kid on the stoop threatened to put a curse on me if I didn’t give him by comic book. I thought a moment, then decided to take my chances. The beginnings of a life of skepticism.

Grady Lewis wasn’t the only one who ran into the suspect, Jahlya McKnight, who works at tops, tells me he too had a conversation with the suspect.

“We spoke about politics. We also talked about who was the first president and where everybody originated from it was a normal conversation,” McKnight says. “And he had a ‘genius’ shirt on that’s what really caught my eye. After that, he left and he said, ‘I’d make sure that you’re not here.’”

But it’s not too late for people like Grady Lewis and Jahlya McKnight to seek help in this traumatic event.

It’s too late for Jahlya to seek help. She was told to not be there, needed to call the cops, and failed. I understand why a black person would not call the cops, but people are dead because of that.

Did not know about the Gypsy enclave.

Very true about the Jews of the Lower Hill.

The “Lower Hill” was, at least partially, a Jewish area up until the 1950’s and early 1960s. The “Urban Redevelopment” of that area with the Civic Auditorium hastened the migration to the Squirrel Hill and Highland Park areas.

Even in the 1960’s and 1970s there were still a lot of Jewish owned businesses in what was left of the Lower Hill.

Mostly original businesses. Often founded by the previous immigrant generation. Although by that point, the businesses were rarely retailers, instead more often wholesalers who sold to the retail stores or other businesses. (Car parts, etc.)

Your observations are very keen.

Here is the context that I saw growing up in Squirrel Hill. As always, ymmv. Certainly I cannot speak of anybody else’s experience, only mine.

The Hebrew lettered signs were usually put up by the immigrant generation and were usually Yiddish rather than actual Hebrew language. Yiddish allowed communication between Jews from throughout a very polyglot Eastern Europe in a way that a secular national language didn’t.

Often the second generation and usually by the third generation most folks were far more fluent in English rather than another language.

By my generation (third) using English versus Yiddish often was often viewed as identifying the community and customers that the business was catering to.

I am not knowledgeable in Yiddish. But my vague recollection is that a lot of Yiddish language publications from Central and Western Europe were transliterated into the Latin alphabet rather than the Hebrew alphabet.

IANAL. But I’m wondering whether the Buffalo shooter had committed any crimes prior to opening fire on the innocent shooters. If not, would the cops, when notified, probably have declined to take action.

Up until the point of criminal actions, it seems to me, our society has ways of limiting and intervening individuals legal rights, but these are often civil rather than criminal legal actions. And often take time.

A cargo plane was written off due to “extensive damage” after a hard landing at Exeter Airport, a report said.

The Boeing 737-4Q8 was returning from East Midlands Airport with a pilot and co-pilot who were not injured.

The plane was “beyond economical repair”, a report by the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) said.

snip

The co-pilot said she did not know what caused the hard landing but did not believe there was a technical issue.

After the aircraft left the runway it was “listing to the left”, the report said.

“It was then that the crew realised there was something ‘seriously wrong’ with the aircraft,” it added.

It explained the damage may have been lessened if the crew had ended the attempt at landing and tried again for a second time.

The main body of the wings was “cracked and buckled” and the top end appeared “creased and rippled”, it said.

Too crazy for National Review, or so they say when she’s useless.

Greene has been a disgrace to her office and a disservice to her constituents in Georgia’s 14th district. She made headlines during her 2020 campaign over her prior musings on QAnon, the “so-called plane that crashed into the Pentagon” on 9/11, and the Parkland shooting as a false-flag operation. In an incoherent and now-infamous Facebook post, she imagined an elaborate conspiracy connecting wildfires in California to Rothschild Inc. and then to space solar generators she likened to a “laser beam or light beam coming down to Earth.”

She has not mended her ways in office, claiming that January 6 was an “inside job” and a “Fed-surrection.” She told Lou Dobbs that joining the U.S. military was “like throwing your life away.” She spoke at the America First Political Action Conference, a white-nationalist gathering organized by a Holocaust denier. Of course, she promoted theories that the 2020 election was stolen.

These would be disqualifying ugly baggage even for a member of Congress who was otherwise busy and effective. For Greene, who serves on no committees, does no apparent legislative work, and rarely appears in a district she moved into in order to run for office, they are her accomplishments. A fixture in the national headlines, she has drawn fire locally for her lack of constituent service. Greene’s district is too red for her to face a real Democratic challenger. Fortunately, Greene has a conservative primary opponent — Jennifer Strahan, a health-care-industry entrepreneur who pledges to focus on serving the district rather than courting controversy for its own sake. The district’s voters should choose Strahan.

Yes on Kemp, No on Greene (NR via MSN)

The assistant office manager at the Tops Friendly Markets store in Buffalo, New York, had already survived one mass shooting.

Nearly 12 years ago, Latisha Rogers and her brother, Danyell Mackin, were at City Grill restaurant in Buffalo when a man opened fire, killing Mackin and three others. Four people were wounded, including one who succumbed years later to those injuries.

Then Saturday, a gunman whose rampage authorities say was fueled by racist hate entered Rogers’ grocery — and began firing.

“It’s just constant, just shooting. He won’t stop. It’s constantly going,” she recounted Thursday to CNN’s Don Lemon.

Hiding behind the service desk counter, Rogers dialed 911. But the dispatcher handled her plea so dismissively local officials now intend to fire her at a May 30 hearing, a top county official said.

How it went down has compounded Rogers’ trauma.
“I’m just back at another massacre and going through this again, trying to find a healing process,” Rogers said.

A Buffalo supermarket worker dialed 911 during the massacre and was asked, ‘Why are you whispering?’ Now, the dispatcher is set to be fired, an official said (CNN)

Bet most people still think Elon is a genius.
All the things he created bought.
He’s a dick.
Rich dangerous dick who thinks he’s above it all and his words are gold.

Wasn’t he intimately involved in creating his first companies which made him a multi-millionaire? Yes, he bought Tesla and Starlink but not those that established his wealth, Zip-2 and PayPal.

Daddy South African emerald mine.
Yes he had success and parlayed it into parlayed to amass money.
But what he sells himself on was not them.
I think the statement Tesla and Starlink have success in spite of him is true.
He’s a dick regardless. And getting more dick every day.
Need that fix.

re: #132 sagehen

the word “commitment” doesn’t carry much meaning from a man with 3 divorces.

An acquaintance of mine, brother of a friend, has had 5 divorces, but has been married to his 6th wife for 20 years now, and is one of the nicest, most helpful guys I know. I didn’t meet him until well after he had his 6th marriage, and don’t know what the previous issues really were. His one serious flaw is totally lack of money management skills — he earned enough for a comfortable middle-class life, but was always extravagant in his expenditures — and perhaps that led to his repeated failures on the matrimonial front.

161
sagehen  May 20, 2022 • 2:40:47pm

His other serious flaw is, “he sure can pick ‘em, huh?” Perhaps a poor judge of character, who hit lucky 6th time out.

Good lawyers are picky about who they take on as clients, and Musk is dramatically reducing the set of good lawyers that would want to deal with him. It’s probably by a factor of two for each of these stupid “I WILL BE THE GREATEST LITIGATION WARRIOR OF ALL TIME” tweets.

There’s also this business of personally insulting legal firms that could end up representing Musk’s targets.

If I were targeted by Musk in a lawsuit, the first thing I’d do is see which major law firms he’d insulted and see if any of them are up for a little pro bono work.

Oz is actually correct.
The federal government considers (and the SCOTUS agreed) that anything within 100 miles of the Mexico and Canada borders, AND within 100 miles of the coasts is a border area where constitutional protections are relaxed. So Philadelphia is a border area.
