Every day, there’s a new outrage from some conservative. They have done something awful, said something awful, committed a crime, demanded that a Democrat be “executed” for something they just made up.
And the response on Twitter is always, “well don’t ask me to vote for Democrats if they don’t DO SOMETHING about this!”
I understand the frustration and I feel it too. But the anger is always directed the wrong way. Not at the people doing bad things, but at the only people standing between us and all-out authoritarianism. And these voices of apathy and despair are winning. They are loud. And they are the voices who will prevail in November when Democrats, as they did in 2016, opt out of the process and let the fascists back in.

My primary gripe with Democrats is that they are constantly bringing a 3-ring binder full of “data” to a switch-blade fight. “When they go low, we go high” was approximately the most counterproductive sentiment in the history of politics. I want elected Democrats to figure out how to use anger and vitriol and go on the attack for once. They are constantly playing defense, and an embarrassingly weak defense at that.

Where’s the coordinated messaging that 50R + Manchin and Sinema in the Senate means nothing gets done in Congress? Where’s the “give them hell, Harry” truth telling about Republicans? Where’s the 50 state strategy to try to ensure no Republican runs for Federal office unopposed? Where’s the sustained and visible effort to fight the Great Both Sides Lie of the mainstream media? Where’s the D institution-building that can hope to oppose Fox News? A pure heart and truth isn’t going to cut it.

Leadership has its role. E.g., the Obama campaigns were damn good at connecting with people, especially in 2008. The problem there is that there was no party-building on top of that work. Ideally you want a positive feedback loop where grassroots energy has a visible effect on what leadership does.
And the problem of the mainstream media has to be faced and overcome. Right now, it is in enemy hands. This problem is larger than D vs. R. It is plutocrat vs. everyone else. The plan of the US ruling class is to institute a second gilded age, where plutocrat control of the media ensures the resulting abuses will never get publicity.

My opinion: you cannot develop a true left wing equivalent of Fox prime time programming — the shows that relentlessly disseminate disinformation and have poisoned our dialogue. The RW want to live in a constant state of outrage and will engage more frequently and with more fervor on any topic. Anger promotes more discussion, especially among those who thrive on RW lies and fundamentalist religious beliefs.
A few weeks ago, I looked at some very old conversations here at LGF — conversations back in 2007 and 2008, years before I joined. There were far longer threads and heated discussions, back when many in the community were YEC, climate change deniers, and almost everyone thought that Obama would be the destructive agent of our democracy, the very force that Trump is proving to be. There was more discussion but of lower quality than today’s exchanges.

The wheat market is ‘interesting’ right now. Basically, there is so much uncertainty, that traders don’t want to enter into any futures transactions and be on the hook for stuff they can’t deliver or that won’t be available. It’s not just the blockade of Ukraine, but that a lot of countries are refusing to accept Russian grain ships, many shipping companies don’t want anything to do with Russian products, and insurance companies don’t want to insure vessels with Russian products/commodities. This will really be felt in developing countries.

Many parts of the world were marginal at best. Add in climate change, and now this.

Basically, people have been moving money out of China since Russia attacked Ukraine. The author implies that this may be because China also has expansionist goals, like those of Russia. And trust in China’s leadership looking out for anybody but themselves is, like in Russia, very low.

One thing that I have been reading is that the vast majority of Ukraine’s wheat and other exports are via ship from the Black Sea ports.
Supposedly the Ukrainians are trying to export via rail. But Russia is bombing the railroads. And the Ukrainian railroad network is not set up to facilitate mass transport of wheat.
Further, the Ukrainian railroad system uses a different gauge tracks than the rest of Europe. Which requires some sort of change in rail cars at the border.
Kitchen Report:
Got a Lodge 12” carbon steel and an Oxo 8” carbon steel. The Lodge warped the first time I cooked it. But I’ve been working on the seasoning and practicing fixing a warp. I have a glass top so it tickles the OCD bone.
The Oxo is almost perfectly seasoned. Perfect in size for 2-3 eggs. Last eggs were almost came free with a shake. I think my Wife Unit will like it.

My guess is that Ukraine basically no longer has a navy in the Black Sea. (There was a joke recently that Russia lost it’s Black Sea flagship to a country which did not even have a navy.)
While Ukraine is starting to receive anti-ship missiles, (Plus likely manufacturing a few.) It probably has higher priority targets than sinking random shipping. Particularly since a lot of that shipping is third-party flagged. Which means that Ukraine might end up sinking non-Russian ships. Which would likely upset folks it is trying to impress, like Turkey and the EU.
I suspect that Ukraine is going to leave it to the West to deal with this and allow them protect the Wests many economic and geo-political interests.
Anyway, with Russia mining the Black Sea and doing a very messy job of it, there are a lot of people in the West rather peeved at Russia. Ukraine is probably not interested in interfering with that process.
In the end, it’s all a big mess with the likelihood that many innocent and uninvolved will be killed or hurt in the process.

I seem to remember that there is a way to pick up Ukrainian railcars and to put them onto std gauge wheels. But that it is time consuming, needs a lot of special equipment and is not very efficient.
Otherwise it would require unloading the Ukrainian railcar and then loading the EU railcars.

Instead, we’re getting slammed for not doing anything to help folks with things like gas prices, food costs, shortages of essentials, and other “kitchen table issues” that might have been addressed in part or full by the BBB that the CPC insisted get a vote in the Senate before the BIF be brought to a vote. Got a Lodge 12” carbon steel and an Oxo 8” carbon steel. The Lodge warped the first time I cooked it. But I’ve been working on the seasoning and practicing fixing a warp. I have a glass top so it tickles the OCD bone.
The Oxo is almost perfectly seasoned. Perfect in size for 2-3 eggs. Last eggs were almost came free with a shake. I think my Wife Unit will like it.

I use Naniwa water stones. No matter what stone you go with, make sure you buy a flattening stone.

That may not necessarily be a design flaw. Fires are unpredictable, and melting the wrong wires in the wrong places could cause this in just about any car with electric locks. With that said, there does seem to be something wrong with Elon’s bloody cars.

ETA: Just going to add that like hundreds of thousands of people in the Phoenix area, I live in a townhome community without garages. I have a covered parking spot. There’s no real good way to hook up an electrical charger at that point. The guy next door with the new Electrica Meccanica single person vehicle, what he does to charge his car is that he waits until ANOTHER neighbor is gone, moves his car into that slot, drapes the charging cable over the brick wall from his patio, and then charges. Theoretically I could do that, but I’m also an ex-lawyer and I could sure as hell see someone suing me for putting an obstruction (cable) on the sidewalk. So no.

One of the best cars I ever owned was a 1994 Toyota Camry, with the 2.2 liter four cylinder and automatic transmission. Damn thing was foolproof - one of those cars you could just run the wheels off it.
Tune it up once a year, change the oil like you’re supposed to, and there you go….years and years of reliable service.

The one thing I like about Consumer Reports is the customer satisfaction bubble. I have purchased cars new that checked all the boxes and yet I despised after six months of ownership. The customer satisfaction kid of gauges the customer sentiment once the new-to-me car after glow wears off. Both Subaru and Tesla have very high brand loyalty.

I went and purchased a natural stone like this. At $23 and almost two pounds it was worth learning on. I use a diamond plate to flatten it before use as well as get the slurry started (because I had that plate). I use the stone after the 400/1000 grit diamond plate.

Shows $750 on the website. Can probably be had for much less. I have the 8” chef’s knife that lists for $219 but I think I got it for $140. It’s beautiful and I feel like a real chef when using it. I can wave it at a full head of garlic and the cloves come apart in a fine dice instantly.
I’ve really been lusting for the biggest blu iron skillet, but those things list for roughly 450 bucks. Man, I wish more people were selling that kind of stuff on ebay. I thought about getting a smithey skillet on ebay, but only one person is selling from a set they own, pretty much for what a new one would cost. I guess people are less inclined to sell family heirlooms on ebay than I’d hoped.
