Music, but Not as We Know It: MELT-BANANA Live

I wish the camera operator had focused on the guitarist’s pedal board, because he’s got some wild shit hooked up to that Gibson SG.

MELT-BANANA is an unstoppable juggernaut of raw energy from Tokyo, Japan. Some songs are explosive conniptions - others are noise delay machine gun heart attacks. One is about dogs. They are all overwhelming.

Interesting note at the end of that article:

Some who opted to receive a check in the mail were a little thrown off by its non-descript appearance. “Honestly I almost threw mine away. It was sent in a brown envelope made of recycled paper. Felt just like a paper bag. I thought for sure it was junk mail,” said a user on Reddit.

That’s deliberate, of course. The look, feel and colors of settlement checks like this are optimized to try to get as many people to throw them out as possible.

And to this day, May 21, 2022, not one government official or close associate of a government official has faced any prison time, or even any sort of indictment or trial. Only the poor rubes (as usual) face the music, and even these clowns have a real shot at blanket Pardons from an incoming President in 2025.

There are various theories as to how and why exactly the Roman Empire went away. We are witness to a 20th/21st Century empire falling down a path of angry old fascism right here, right now. This modern 21st Century America champions the loud, the rich, the entitled, the most pig-headed backwards egomaniacal monstrosities and graceless charlatans and the rest of the world shakes it’s head and wonders how it could have all gone so far wrong.

It has a mortality rate of 3-6%, which makes it far more lethal than COVID. Apparently it’s not as easily transmitted so that likely will prevent widespread illness. For us seniors, our smallpox vaccination may protect us from the disease.

If you are curious where the current fighting is, and what the Russians are trying to do in the Ukraine, look at the June 2022 entry on this map. Then imagine if there was an even smaller set of arrows to the right/East of that one. It would include towns like Rubizhne, Lysychansk (Severodonetsk is just to the East), etc. And the Sversky Donets River runs right through the middle of this.

(There may still be some fighting going on in Lyman and Popasna where the pincers labeled June 2022 are located.)

How it started:

.

How it ended:

.

Notes:

1. A Russian embedded reporter was most likely the source of the mortar’s location.

2. But also, the mortar stayed in the same location for at least a day. And if that mortar fired, ‘FireFinder’ radar can back plot the location from the shell’s trajectory within seconds. If the Ukrainians have the digital communications, targeting information can be set to Fire Direction Center and then to the gun line within minutes.

3. And of course there are also drones.

4. No matter how they got the data, the Ukrainians successfully hit the mortar and destroyed it. Impressive and very speedy intelligence and targeting!

5. The Russians brought in the heavy mortar to destroy Ukrainian fortifications that their standard artillery could not. The area has been a frontline for 8 years and both sides are heavily dug in and fortified.

Your semi-regular reminder from the poor schlub at the front desk of your hotel: Hotel reservations made on a certain date are for no earlier than the afternoon of that date. If you go onto a third-party site and book for Sunday, then your check-in time is for Sunday afternoon. Bear this in mind when browsing those sites, as their systems generally roll over to the following day at 12am, meaning any availability you see after midnight is not for that exact moment. Failure to heed this can lead to everything from feeling like a fool when you learn the hotel is sold-out to full-blown Karenhood when you find out that you can’t check-in at 2am for a reservation that’s not valid until 3pm because hotel policy does not allow early check-ins.

There’s a sort of reverse problem here in Western Europe sometimes. Flights from North America all arrive early in the morning, which of course sucks for getting your hotel room. So if you’re rich or more likely have a really good corporate travel policy, sometimes the booking agent will book a hotel room for the night before so you can go right from the airport to the hotel room at 8:30 am and freshen up/crash/whatever. The agent will try to leave all sorts of notes in the booking that the client isn’t going to check in until the AM, but I’ve heard stories about the hotels giving away the room anyways (to great ire, of course). You’d think major hotels would get used to the idea.

When I had to travel from the US to Europe, I did the normal thing and sat in the park for hours until it was a reasonable time to go to the hotel and make sad doggie eyes at the desk until they let me in. Much easier going the other way.

No anecdote in particular, just years of dealing with people walking to the front desk on a weekend night after midnight to check-in, then either getting angry or disappointed when they find out that their reservation isn’t for that evening and/or we’re totally sold-out. I’ve had people get all kinds of pissed with me because “IT SHOWS AVAILABILITY ON [insert third-party site] RIGHT NOW!!!” I used to feel sympathy back when I first started working in the hotel industry, but that was before numerous encounters with drunks/entitled assholes demanding I find some way to get them a room at o’dark thirty on a weekend burnt out that portion of my soul.

Yeah, I’ll get variations of that from time to time, people walking in before the crack of dawn to tell me that their flight/drive went quicker than they expected. Some are reasonable and will accept being told that we’ve no availability for early check-in and either try to find some way to amuse themselves or even just grab a short nap in their car.

But I’ve had plenty like this one young couple at the first hotel I worked at, who showed up at 5am on a sold-out weekend because of an early flight, got angry with me that we didn’t have a room set aside for their early check-in, and sat in the lobby griping to anybody who got near about the “service” at the hotel because we won’t kick somebody out of their bed in the middle of the morning to accommodate a couple of entitled asshats.

Or the family of six whose matriarch didn’t like being told we had no rooms at 6am for immediate check-in and demanded (in full Karen tone) “WHAT ARE WE SUPPOSED TO DO UNTIL 3PM!?!” Don’t know, don’t care, not my problem.

ericblair  May 21, 2022 • 10:40:06pm

re: #69 Targetpractice

In this case, though, it’s the hotel’s screwup, because the client paid for the previous night so they could check in at 9:00 am the next day. I don’t know if this ever happens in the US, but here there’s a definite reason in Europe why you’d want to do this. The problem is the hotel deciding that you never arrived the previous day, even though there were all sorts of notes about it in the booking, and giving away the room.

71
ckkatz  May 21, 2022 • 10:52:53pm

Interesting story…

A Ukrainian civilian saw a group of men burying something. So he notified the Ukrainian police. Who went out and dug it up. They found a large amount of explosives and 10 ak-47 style rifles with munition. The rifles were of Iranian manufacture.

It appears that the rifles were supposed to be smuggled to the Houthis of Yemen by the Iranians. But they were instead seized by the Americans. Who gave them to the Ukrainians. The Ukrainian Special Forces buried them as part of a “stay behind” cache for guerilla forces in case the Russians captured the area. Neither the citizen who saw the cache being buried, nor the Ukrainian police had any idea what was happening.

Other examples of weapons seized from the Houthis, such as mortars, have also been photographed in Ukrainian hands.

Well, based upon my experience, most hotels in the US won’t check a reservation in without the guest being physically present with valid ID and whatever method(s) of payment are approved to cover any incidents/security deposit/etc. Likewise we require some form of guarantee, generally a valid credit card, that can be charged a deposit in order to hold the room. Beyond that is the discretion of the hotel, but my experience is they’ll honor outstanding reservations until at least normal check-out the following day.

Banning Nancy Pelosi because of her political stances makes the Catholic Church a political organization. Tax them.

My grandmother was excommunicated by the Catholic Church for divorcing and remarrying. This was back in the 1920’s when divorce was not recognized by the Catholic church and they saw her as a serial adulteress for remarrying.

If they’d pounded the city to rubble in a day and then planted a flag, it would have been a success if a very costly and messy one.

In a week? A success, but now there would be some snickering about how it took them so long.

A month? A success only in the sense that they’d finally managed to pound the defenders into retreat/surrender.

But 3 months? This is the saddest fucking “success” in Russian history.

Yep. If they’d taken the town with most of the population still there and alive, it would have been a major feather in their caps.

But with most of the population fled or dead, and the city pounded to pieces? Congrats, they spent weeks and countless millions destroying everything of value just to rule over a pile of rubble.

I’m sure this will be celebrated as a great day in Russian history. *wanking motion*

The state of Texas is back to harassing transgender children and their families.

Texas’ child welfare agency has resumed at least some of its investigations into parents who provide gender-affirming care to their transgender children. Last week, the state Supreme Court overturned an injunction blocking the state from investigating these parents for child abuse.

On Thursday, nearly a week after the ruling, investigators with the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services began contacting lawyers representing some of these families to tell them they will be continuing the investigations.

“They reached back out and said they need to finish their investigations,” said Tracy Harting, an Austin-based attorney who is representing a family in the Central Texas area. “I’ve talked to my clients, and now they have to decide how they want to proceed.”

I’m not seeing a whole lot of waning enthusiasm for supporting Ukraine. There might be less TV images, but with Sweden and Norway trying to join NATO, and the funding we’re sending, the West is staying pretty engaged. There has been increasing opposition in the America First wing of the GOP. If the GOP wins control of Congress in the midterms, next year they will cut off Ukrainian aid by demanding dollar for dollar cuts in domestic spending to pay for it. So we need to get as much aid to Ukraine as we can ASAP so they can defeat Russia this year.

My parents weren’t legally married until I was 13 years old and we moved to Texas, where there was common law marriage. (Long story about how the officiant at the wedding never filed the license and died the next week.) My parents got a “certificate of informal partnership” in 1996 in case Social Security got weird about the lack of paperwork around their marriage. At the end of this very long story (I’m leaving things out), my mother told me, “Oh, and by the way I misspelled your name on the birth certificate.” At that point I was 36 years old and changing my name was kind of out of the question, but I felt free to use a nickname at work after that point.

I remember getting a questionnaire from the archdiocese when a divorced Baptist friend was getting an annulment so that his wife to be could have the proper church marriage her family demanded. No kids from the first one (one on the way from the second) and honestly, I had no trouble saying the first time they’d got married without any clue what they really were doing. He and the second, (no matter what Rome officially says, but I digress), are still very together and doing well. It was funny explaining this to him with his Baptist upbringing but from my Canterbury perspective and with my mother having been Roman, I was able to explain it to him ;)

Joe can do 4 though at once. He shouldn’t have to intervene in everything that happens in the US.

re: #117 The Pie Overlord!

Read this thread, then watch the actual conversation in full context before you draw a conclusion would be my advice - there’s a youtube link in the thread. Turns out he actually wants to reduce black maternal deaths through a few means because they do suffer death more often than white moms.

One oldie but goodie.
Guy walks into a bar and as he goes to order the bartender says “No dogs allowed unless service dogs and I see no license. Out.”
Guy goes, “You don’t understand. This dog can talk.”
Bartender rolls his eyes and says once again. “Out.”
Guy turns to the dog and says, “OK Duke. Let’s show this guy. Tell him. Who was the greatest NY Yankee of all time?”
Dog barks “ROOF! ROOF!”
Bartender hollers “RUBE!” and two bouncers hustle the guy and dog and throw them out the door.
Guy and dog look at each other, and Duke says;

Well then, shouldn’t they amend the law BEFORE Roe is overturned? Otherwise, women can start dying in Arkansas the instant the SCOTUS ruling is passed, unless the final ruling itself provides these exceptions.

re: #94 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

My grandmother was excommunicated by the Catholic Church for divorcing and remarrying. This was back in the 1920’s when divorce was not recognized by the Catholic church and they saw her as a serial adulteress for remarrying.

My father’s mother was widowed when I was a kid. During my last visit with her (I was about 20), she was living with her boyfriend because he was divorced, so they couldn’t marry.

Dushak’s Trailer Park, it just came to me. Portage, Wisconsin. They were drinking up a storm, and invited me to join, but I declined. My Aunt Pat dropped me off and picked me up later.

re: #148 No Malarkey!

The traditional neo-con wing also favors cutting domestic spending so no matter the rationale, we are facing dark days ahead if the GOP gains control of either House.

I’m going to hide this here. I should have had it in 4, but somehow I lost track of a blue one.
