Just wanted to mention that if you haven’t seen Everything Everywhere All at Once….go see it. Fantastic film. My friend the film reviewer was lucky to get an authorized review copy, because the film hasn’t been picked up here by a Czech distributor, which is a shame.

It deserves a good many awards: original screenplay, best actress, best supporting actress, best supporting actor, best editing, best directing - and if it doesn’t win some awards, I’d like to go the universe where it does. And my friend loved it…she was laughing and crying at the same time.

Last night was the last appearance of Kate McKinnon as a regular on SNL. Every once in a while they hit one out of the park and this was the last of that skit. My wife and I had tears in our eyes. Future classic.

In case every living person on Earth hasn’t seen this yet:

Vonnegut’s letter to a book burner

If you were to bother to read my books, to behave as educated persons would, you would learn that they are not sexy, and do not argue in favor of wildness of any kind. They beg that people be kinder and more responsible than they often are. It is true that some of the characters speak coarsely. That is because people speak coarsely in real life. Especially soldiers and hardworking men speak coarsely, and even our most sheltered children know that. And we all know, too, that those words really don’t damage children much. They didn’t damage us when we were young. It was evil deeds and lying that hurt us.

After I have said all this, I am sure you are still ready to respond, in effect, “Yes, yes-but it still remains our right and our responsibility to decide what books our children are going to be made to read in our community.” This is surely so. But it is also true that if you exercise that right and fulfill that responsibility in an ignorant, harsh, un-American manner, then people are entitled to call you bad citizens and fools. Even your own children are entitled to call you that.

It’s worth reading the whole thing.

Reminds of me something a famous Czech author once wrote:

Those who boggle at strong language are cowards, because it is real
life which is shocking to them, and weaklings like that are the very people
who cause the most harm to culture and character. They would like to see
the nation grow up into a group of over-sensitive little people -
masturbators of false culture in the mold of St Aloysius, of whom it was said
in the book of the monk Eustachius that when he once heard a man breaking
wind with thundering noise, he immediately burst into tears and could
only be consoled by prayer.

Same, but it was tears of laughter.

During the early days of plague lockdown, I was in a Skype meeting with my boss, and her bosses. It’s worth noting that I was the only man on the Skype call.

During a momentary lull in the conversation, SOMEONE WHO WAS NOT ME ripped a museum-quality, sonorous, baritone fart, complete with room reverb. I guess they didn’t think their mic would pick it up. This wasn’t just a little pfft that could have legitimately been someone’s leg rubbing against leather chair upholstery or what have you. This was the sort of thing that Mozart would have written joke songs about.

Because I am eternally somewhere between 8 and 12 years old, I erupted into gut-spasm laughter that I had to work hard to stifle. I always have my camera off, but I nearly broke a bone rushing to press the mic mute button.

Of course nobody else acknowledged it in any way, and the culprit wasn’t revealed. She who denied it, supplied it!

Yup, DOJ is suing the former Republican Party Financial Chairman to register as a foreign agent.

Wynn was the finance chair of the Republican National Committee from January 2017 to January 2018, when he resigned amid sexual misconduct allegations.

The FARA violations are alleged to have occurred June 2017 through August 2017.

Justice Department Sues to Compel a U.S. Businessperson to Register Under the Foreign Agents Registration Act
Complaint Alleges That Stephen A. Wynn Lobbied the Then-President and Former Administration Officials at the Request of the People’s Republic of China

The Department of Justice today filed a civil enforcement action in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, seeking to compel Stephen A. Wynn, a U.S. businessperson and hotelier who previously served as the CEO of Wynn Resorts, to register under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) as the agent of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and a senior official of the PRC’s Ministry of Public Security (MPS). Wynn was advised to register as an agent by the department but declined to do so.
*snip*
According to the complaint, from at least June 2017 through at least August 2017, Wynn contacted the then-President and members of his administration to convey the PRC’s request to cancel the visa or otherwise remove from the United States a Chinese businessperson who left China in 2014, was later charged with corruption by the PRC and sought political asylum in the United States. Wynn engaged in these efforts at the request of Sun Lijun, then-Vice Minister of the MPS. Wynn conveyed the request directly to the then-President over dinner and by phone, and he had multiple discussions with the then-President and senior officials at the White House and National Security Council about organizing a meeting with Sun and other PRC government officials.

When you read the phrase Ukraine is in a “Battle of Attrition” this is what is meant:

In most battles the casualties are similar on both sides, so it is likely that the Russians are suffering at least as many casualties. Also, for each combat death there are generally 3 ‘wounded’. The phrase “Bloody Mess” comes to mind.

One difference is that Ukraine is currently doing a “levée en masse”. Ie Universal Conscription. Putin has not yet announced that for Russia. Because of this, some analysts are forecasting that by the end of summer, the Ukrainians might be able to seize the military initiative.

Everyone associated with the RNC is dirty. Last year they indicted a bunch of bagmen who were funneling Russian money into the RNC. One of those happens to be an inlaw to perpetual Putin puppet Rand Paul (shocking, I know). Now we learn that Wynn was an undeclared foreign agent for China.

It’s as though you could figure out US foreign policy based on who Trump and his goons were getting money from.

You’ve got Tom Barrack who lobbied to loosen restrictions against Saudis and who helped soften the RNC platform to distance Saudi Arabia from the 9/11 terrorists.

Every last GOPer is dirty, and they all know it. They just don’t care that you know, because they think they’ve got enough levers of power to avoid consequences of their criminal conduct.

One of the best albums on my playlist for decades and it’s easily found.
They are now Roger Clyne And The Peacemakers.
I have to do this as a PSA because we all need to breathe. And sing. And dance. And pick up a musical instrument of any kind and find a quiet place to make loud.
I do believe my personal experience shows me singing, even if you think you can’t, is one of the best things to do.
Most folks will not dance or sing or stroll or just open up because.
1000 reasons because.
Screw that.

You can find music that suits your voice.
Start now. Time is running out. Limited opportunity. Some assembly required. Batteries not included.

Tomorrow I get my 2nd Moderna booster and the last 3 kicked my ass. But I am traveling and playing and not going to fuck around. I suspect I will be laid out 2-3 days.
Beats the hell out of being laid out in an open coffin.

Dance and sing and dance again.

Thanks for letting me be me.

Now go vibrate in an upright position and scream and shout and let it out.
In a ride at 75 with the system cranked to your favorite tune on an interstate is grand.

Not surprised, but FFS:

Longtime SBC leaders kept a private list of abusive pastors and ministers despite claiming for years that such an idea was impractical for stopping predators and impossible to adopt because of the SBC’s decentralized structure. Compiled since 2007, the roster contained the names of 703 offenders, most with an SBC connection. A few still work at churches in the SBC or other denominations.

Right after he jumps out in front of you.

I’m trying to figure out if $4000,000 is supposed to mean $400,000 or what. They included one comma.

Right now there is a dark band coming in and there is a lighter section after that. The winds are picking up a little. The winds are like a light breeze for now.

Small town newspapers are notorious for typo and what and huh reporting.
My local newspaper is notorious for screwing up names, locations, times, and on and on.
We called it the Daily Error.
Corrections were on page 2 the next day.
We had a band interview years ago that the reporter who wrote down what we said handed it off to Cub Reporter Biff who murdered it.
Bad.
Real bad.

An idea, btw, for anyone here who likes to write, and knows a lot or is willing to learning a lot of pre-WW2 history. You don’t travel back in time and kill Hitler. You travel back in time and discredit the Nazi movement, make it a joke so that it cannot take root.

Sure worked like a charm with Trumpism, eh?

Hitler had his Goebbels, Drumpf had his Faux News Channel.

I’m trying to fill out my ballot (we’re all mail-in here) for the CA primary. Mostly fairly easy decisions, but I have no idea who to pick for county supervisor. They’re all against poverty, war and injustice (unlike the rest of you squares for you Tom Lehrer fans.) There is no incumbent and only only one of the four lacks what I would consider really relevant experience. Guess I’ll have to wait until I can discuss it with Mr. C. I know he hasn’t really looked at it yet and I had wanted to get it taken care of before we head off for the Central Coast for a few days tomorrow, but it isn’t urgent.

The historical Nazis were a joke for years. Until suddenly they weren’t. So IMO it would be tough to write the story, and the more the author knows about this history, the harder it would be to make it believable.

Not blood thirsty.

Blood thirsty would be him set on fire and thrown through a plate glass window into the path of a semi hauling 60 thousand pounds. That only ran over his legs.
Now that is blood thirsty.

So we go to a playoff in Tulsa at the PGA Championship.

Will Zalatoris (sp?), 2nd at The Masters this year vs. Justin Thomas, the 2017 PGA champ.

The Chilean who was leading the tournament, Mito Pereira, double-bogeyed the final hole and shot himself in the foot, missing the Playoff by a stroke.

We had “Angry God” around 5th grade History. It’s Calvinist, so our RC teacher didn’t endorse it particularly.

I went to public school, so “Sinners” had to wait until High School U.S. History. We skimped on the so-called Great Awakening in seventh grade U.S. History.
