Subways (at least in Germany) no longer offer meatball subs, so I have no reason to go there. You can duck into almost any snack stand, bakery or butcher’s and find ready-made sandwich rolls that are tons better and made of real bread.

From downstairs:

re: #233 Eventual Carrion

My friend’s little hole-in-the-wall bar still has the very old, wooden payphone closet. The payphone has been gone for years but people still use the closet because they can close the door and it is fairly quiet from the music and people talking to use your cell.

The last time I used a payphone would’ve been in 2008, in a spa town called Poděbrady. My phone died unexpectedly and I had to call my (then) wife to let her know what restaurant we should meet up at after her spa treatment.

Well Subway’s sandwhiches don’t legally have any bread, in at least some of the EU nations. It turns out their bread has too much sugar to legally qualify as bread, at least in Ireland.

Irish court rules Subway bread is not real bread

This morning, I was treated to a bald eagle doing a strafing run in my front yard. I wish I was quicker on the camera to grab a shot of that action, but it scared the crap out of me because it was all of a sudden, EAGLE, and then he was gone.

Mrs. Fish was worried that it might have tried to grab our cat. Thankfully, I believe it was a chipmunk or a vole that made the unfortunate decision to run from our yard into the street, where the eagle was quick to spot it and indulge in a light snack.

In more Russia-West decoupling news, Starbucks says dasvidanya, gives its employees 6 months of salary, and help in finding new jobs.

Starbucks exits Russia, shuts coffee shops

Earlier, they had merely suspended their operations.

What the article doesn’t make clear is what will happen to their stores since they merely had a licensing agreement, and Starbucks didn’t own their stores there.

I bought a used T6i for an entry to that new-fangled digital stuff. You can’t run FD/FL on it without a cheesy auxiliary optic. EOS-M mirrorless will take the old glass, so I’ll wind up there if this isn’t all a passing fancy.

Does Canon still make it easy to shoot legacy lenses on their stuff? I’ve shot Sony/Minolta and Pentax/Ricoh, and half the fun is going on lens forums and saying “yeah, I could spend a hundred bucks on that 85mm manual portrait lens that cost a small fortune back in the day.” Of course, everyone knows when there’s an 85mm out there with really good glass, so then the “steals” get less stolen.

Canon broke the faith introducing EOS. Older Canon glass won’t go on EOS full-frame or DSLRs without a crippling adapter. It will go on mirrorless EOS-M. About six great/good families of old lenses will mostly adapt to EOS without trouble—M42, Nikon, DKL, Yashica/Contax, Mamiya and Pentax esp.

Warriors are looking as good as they’ve ever been, firing on all cylinders as required. Having Poole and Wiggins and Looney playing like they’ve been doing takes a lot of the load off of Curry and KT. The fact that they can take a 40 point night from Doncic with barely a shrug says a lot. When they rev it up, they are a beautiful sight to behold.

Mirrorless cameras are much fun for all old lenses. The first digital I bought into was Olympus m4/3 because I could use FD lenses with it. The problem is the sensor is 1/2 the size of 35mm film so it has a 2x crop factor - good for telephoto people, not good for wide angle!

I believe that that there is a party congress shortly that is supposed to award him another 5 year term.

China has been making inroads (politically, economically and militarily) on a lot of the small Pacific Island nations recently. Based upon Putin’s lawless actions in various parts of the world including Ukraine,, it was also looking at a strike on Taiwan. And, from what I understand, worrying Australia. There is now some pushback to return to the pre-tfg world.

The Chinese economy is currently taking a big hit from the pandemic shutdowns locally and global trade dislocations. And the massively leveraged real-estate market is taking a bad hit.

Gonna be interesting.

The Biden attempt to rebuild some sort of Pacific coalition is also my understanding.

It is clear that tfg did significant damage to the US strategic position in the Pacific and in Asia. The amount and what can be fixed remains to be seen. Particularly in light of the upcoming 2022 and 2024 elections.

I am continually astonished at the US multi-billionaire oligarchs who somehow think that they can somehow successfully get even richer by finessing a surrender to authoritarian regimes like China and Russia.

Washington, D.C., Attorney General Karl Racine has sued Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg for allegedly failing to protect consumer data following the Cambridge Analytica data leak.

“The evidence shows Mr. Zuckerberg was personally involved in Facebook’s failure to protect the privacy and data of its users leading directly to the Cambridge Analytica incident,” Racine said in a statement about the lawsuit released Monday. “This unprecedented security breach exposed tens of millions of Americans’ personal information, and Mr. Zuckerberg’s policies enabled a multi-year effort to mislead users about the extent of Facebook’s wrongful conduct.”

He added, “This lawsuit is not only warranted, but necessary, and sends a message that corporate leaders, including CEOs, will be held accountable for their actions.”

This is called “Harassing fire”.

It is designed to make it harder to do anything and message/reminder from the enemy that they are still there and have the power to do this.

What is not seen in the explosions is the shrapnel which goes flying out for tens sometimes hundreds of meters around the explosion. That is the killer.

By the way a close up explosion is extremely loud. And sudden since the shell was flying at faster than the speed of sound.

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WPDE) — A Marion County deputy is stationed at a hospital where former Horry County Sheriff’s Department employee 70-year-old Stephen Flood has been in the hospital since this past Friday, one day after a judge sentenced him to 18 years in prison for the deaths of two women in his custody, according to Marion County Sheriff Brian Wallace.

snip

Officials said in September of 2018, Flood and his then co-worker Joshua Bishop drove into floodwaters in Marion County, after Hurricane Florence with two women in their transport van.

Wendy Newton, 45, of Shallotte, N.C. and Nicolette Green, 43, of Myrtle Beach, died inside of that detention center transport van when it was overtaken by floodwaters.

Flood and Bishop were fired from the Horry County Sheriff’s Office. Termination papers state they were fired for “wanton disregard for the safety of persons.

So, the Repug vice-lords have well and truly disowned Maddy if they think he should not be allowed to boff staffers or run some side grift. How much less Republican could you get? At this point, he isn’t just a lame duck, he is a dead duck as far as the Repugs are concerned. This raises a bizarre, but not impossible scenario: What if Maddy declares that he wants to join the Democrats? Stranger things have happened. If he can come up with some good dirt on Russian kompromat and GOP coke orgies, I would favor taking him. We could treat him like some kind of public rehab case, a wayward youth rescued from the dastardly clutches of the GOP.

A review of Russian and Ukrainian military field rations (mre - meal ready to eat) by a couple of Ukrainian reporters.

There are a number of Youtuber reviews of military rations from around the world. Including some from many years ago.

When I was a reservist, I remember bringing back one of my US Army mre’s from annual training and giving it my co-workers. One was so disgusted by it she moved trash can with it’s remains to outside her cubicle. While I was generally not impressed with mre’s, I didn’t think they were particularly bad. And I ate them without complaint. I guess that I am not a good food critic.

This is the “pastor” of the “church” near my house where they want the state to execute women who get abortions.

They meet on Sunday afternoons at 4 pm, which is the most unsafe time of the day heatwise here in south central Arizona. I very nearly gave myself heatstroke a couple of times protesting. I have considered getting a professionally printed banner and tying it to the side of my vehicle that faces the church from the curb. Or, less professionally, writing up a leaflet and papering the many cars which can’t fit in the parking lot around 6 pm, which is one hour before they end. Why yes, these people are into three hour church torture.

Very true:

The global silver trade between the Americas, Europe and China from the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries was a spillover of the Columbian Exchange which had a profound effect on the world economy. In fact, many scholars consider the silver trade to mark the beginning of a genuinely global economy, with one historian noting that silver “went round the world and made the world go round.”

*snip*

[ETA]: From 1500 to 1800, Bolivia and Mexico produced about 80% of the world’s silver with 30% of it eventually ending up in China

My wife and I were at this exotic plants shop a month or so ago, and we bought a little starter plant…$55 for some stem the guy stuck in a 2 inch pot.

It was on a Sunday and I took this pic in front of Starbucks so I could tell people I was in Moscow.

Bottom right of this pic is what it will look like when it’s about a year or two old. 3-4 feet tall with 10-12” leaves growing on the moss pole.

It’s from Columbia, and the first hints of orgies and coke parties had just made the news, so my wife named the plant ‘Key Bump’ and it’s just now unfurling its first new leaf!

It must have been a wild time in the 15th and 16th centuries. “Japanese” pirates were raiding China, Chinese merchants were setting up operations in the region and migrating by the tens of thousands, Portugese followed by Spanish, Dutch and then English traders started showing up…. One of my History professors was the consultant to a rich guy who has determined to get richer recovery a Manila gold galleon on the NW coast. He tried to tell the guy gold didn’t flow that way through the Pacific triangle route. Other nice things did,

So a gold galleon on the hunt for beaver furs and dried salmon?

Nope, finding its way down to swap porcelain, silks, and other riches in Mexico using the prevailing winds and currents.

It’s such a made-up, empty question to ask people.

And such a question only serves to fluff headlines to drive eyes on product (e.g., the TV shows.)

I agree, as it’s based on the flawed premise that the government is responsible for anything bad or good happening in our lives.

Brings to mind the debunked theory of Gavin Mendies claiming one of Zheng He’s missions was to the west coast of North America. It’s not out of the question, considering what his fleets accomplished. It just, as of now, does not withstand scrutiny.

I’m remembering some Pre-Columbian pottery culture farther south that is accepted as Asian in origin. Jomo, maybe.

My wife and I were at this exotic plants shop a month or so ago, and we bought a little starter plant…$55 for some stem the guy stuck in a 2 inch pot.

It was on a Sunday and I took this pic in front of Starbucks so I could tell people I was in Moscow.

Poor Blooper. Seems as if Pitbull dogs have the hardest time being adopted. My local shelters are full of them.

I can’t understand why. Pitties are among the sweetest dogs I’ve ever known, and I’m a cat person.

Maybe you or someone else has already posted this: David French has an Atlantic article about yesterday’s official report on the SBC titled “The Southern Baptist Horror: How many bad apples must we pluck before we recognize that the orchard is diseased?”

Too many organizations, particularly in the religious communities, but also in entertainment and in politics, have similar stories

History and money and subsidiaries and money and GM and Ford and money money money money.

But Ford took no bailout money I heard over and over from the fundies.

And I wanted to add that I had read that US bombers were forbidden from bombing the Opel plants in Germany.
In more than one publication.

I hadn’t seen that. And I’m kind of shocked that the title went there. Thanks for the heads’ up.
