This is why we can never portray the other side as “the enemy”, nor declare that we are “at war” with them. Because when you are in a war with an enemy whom you have created as a matter of faith, not fact, you will do absolutely anything to win that war.

Republicans are the enemy, and their declaration of war was given back in 1994. This is fact, not faith.

To deny this is foolish.

The best that we can do is fight back as needed while trying to avoid losing ourselves in war madness.

I disagree; they don’t have a collapse of ideas just because they are silent about them. They are on the verge of instituting their nationwide goals once they are in control in 2025 with all 3 branches of government: Restoring the Plessy vs Ferguson America of the 1890’s: Wealth untaxed, Social Security and Medicare dismantled, ACA gone, people of color without rights, elimination of all provisions against discrimination or protecting women’s rights; a nationwide ban against abortion; support of white supremacists worldwide; a permanent autocracy run by a permanent oligarchy. Not broadcasting your intentions doesn’t mean you don’t have them.

This is the point I was making. Remember that our “enemy” is not only human, but American, as much as they may not act like it. They are our lost brothers and sisters, crazy people who lost their way because they were desperate to avoid being wrong. My point is that if we do have to fight - metaphorically or, God forbid, physically - let us not fight like the right-wingers do, in a no-holds-barred, everything-goes struggle of annihilation. There is a cost to our souls when we do that.

When I was a teenager in the 1970s, the only things Uvalde was known for were ranching, being the burial place of John Nance Garner (a VP best known for calling the Vice Presidency not worth a bucket of warm spit piss), and being the birthplace of the then-governor Dolph Briscoe. Not much going on there.

But no, Everyone Hates the Dems, The Dems Are The Sole Party At Fault For Everything, so fuck it all, let the authoritarians burn it down because anything is better than suffering a Dem to live. More fallout from the SBC report on child sexual abuse.

Augie Boto probably knows more about this than anyone, he kept it secret and he was against the SBC waiving its privilege for a 20 year period. He’s not the only one, there’s a whole crew around him. But I would be happy to see him being sued into the cellar for libeling or slandering victims and covering up child sexual abuse.

As many of you know, our beloved brother Steven has worked on his sobriety for many years. I was gonna make a joke about West Virginian Democrats here, but they didn’t turn on the national Democrats until Bush vs. Gore.

I’ll never forget that 2000 election campaign rally on the steps of the Raleigh County Courthouse where none of West Virginia’s leading Democrats - Robert C. Byrd, Jay Rockefeller, or the district’s congressional representative, Nick Rahall - said not one word in support of the party’s presidential candidate. No, it was important to reelect Byrd, Rockefeller, and Rahall to protect KING COAL and Appalachian Values.

“Since plans to construct Spaceport Camden were conceived, the FAA’s review of the license application has been fraught with factual inaccuracies and legal errors,” said Brian Gist, SELC Senior Attorney. “These laws exist to protect our natural resources, and given the risk Spaceport Camden poses to a national treasure like Cumberland Island, the FAA needs to take its legal obligations seriously.”

The FAA granted the license in December 2021 despite lacking key information about the facility’s operations, as well as failing to evaluate impacts to public health, private property and the environment, according to the complaint.

“For the past seven years, the FAA has ignored requests by local residents, park visitors and the Department of the Interior to fully evaluate the effects of failed launches on Cumberland Island National Seashore and its visitors,” according to a news release announcing the legal challenge.

The complaint contends the FAA failed to revisit the environmental review after the project was changed to focus on launching smaller rockets, even though it was required by law.

It also cites the FAA’s failure to comply with the National Environmental Policy Act, the National Seashore’s enabling legislation, and the FAA’s own regulations.

Cumberland Island National Seashore is the largest maritime wilderness on the U.S. East Coast, and it was designated by an act of Congress to protect sensitive wildlife and history.

Unless the DOJ actually fires off indictments and moves ahead, the Hatch Act is a dead letter, except as it applies to Democrats. The GOP keeps acting with impunity in a wide range of criminal conduct, but Democrats are not only held to a different and higher standard, but are held to account when they don’t clean up the mess the GOP leaves in its wake (which is all the time).

A Texas hospital says they are treating several students after a gunman opened fire at an elementary school and exchanged gunfire with border patrol agents before he was apprehended by police.

On Tuesday afternoon Uvalde Police took a suspect into custody following reports a gunman was on the run at Robb Elementary School.

Prior to his arrest the suspect exchanged gunfire with border patrol agents before barricading himself in the school, sending the campus and all other schools in the district into lockdown.

Kyiv Independent calls bullshit on New York Times editorial:

Appeasement isn’t the voice of reason. It’s fear and short-sightedness that will only make things worse, something we’ve all seen too many times in the past.

Allowing Russia to annex Crimea emboldened Russia to try to swallow the Donbas. When it invaded in 2014, carving up a sovereign state and killing civilians, the other world leaders’ tepid response made Russia’s bloody dictator feel empowered to do more.

It’s obvious that he’s been planning the full-scale invasion of Ukraine ever since. It’s often been said by world leaders and analysts that one of Vladimir Putin’s main miscalculations was assuming that the West would let him take Ukraine easily. It didn’t.

Now the New York Times is calling for the West to do what Putin expected and give up.

Agreed. Even when Republicans lose, they win. They have stopped President Biden’s agenda (with the help of DINOs like Manchin and Sinema) and have the media at their beck and call.
Democrats need to figure out how to fight back. Look how successful the ginned up anti-CRT nonsense was for recent Republican candidates.

The last time Democrats were truly that successful, their voters would have been susceptible to screaming about CRT.

The CRT stuff only works in the primaries because their voters are largely uneducated morons. I doubt that it would fly in the general election. The problem is that dems run away from the fight and the GOP spew BS uncontested.

If all 400 million guns in the US evaporated tomorrow, I am 900% sure you would still have a savage, violent, bloodthirsty, and highly motivated populace of wannabe mass murderers. Where there’s a will there’s a way, and you don’t need a gun to cause mass deaths. Just ask Tim McVeigh or Ayman al-Zawahiri.

I really think people who say “it’s the guns” or “it’s mental health” are missing the point entirely. According to Wikipedia, the top 10 countries ranked by per-capita firearms ownership are the US, Falkland Islands, Yemen, New Caledonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Canada, Uruguay, Cyprus, and Finland. When was the last time you heard of anything resembling a mass shooting in any of those countries apart from the US?

Those other nine countries have private gun ownership, and statistically I’m sure they have mental illness as well. The one thing they don’t have that we do have is American culture. I don’t mean superficial culture like our entertainment or clothing styles, I mean the Who We Really Are, deep down in our cultural DNA. We’re a cut-throat, merciless, cold and indifferent society.

People will disagree, but I think that anyone who thinks our mass murder problem would be solved with One Weird Trick is naive at best.

I agree that the worst part of the US gun problem is the US gun culture and how it relates to cultural violence etc.

But guns make it too damn easy to kill people. If all the guns went poof, the deaths and injuries would go down significantly because it’s just harder to kill people with other weapons.

One Weird Trick didn’t eliminate all vehicular deaths, but a combination of half a dozen common sense changes, identified by research and passed into law, cut the toll in half. That’s something.

Seat belts and air bags and guard rails don’t save everyone, but they save a whole bunch.

and most firearms deaths aren’t premeditated either. Certainly when somebody’s careless enough to leave a weapon where their 4-year-old can get hold of it isn’t on purpose either.

Universal background checks, red flag laws, safe storage regulations, won’t save everyone. There will still be firearms deaths, but not as many.

Most mass shootings happened in private homes:

The archetypal mass shooting occurs in a public place like a school or a bar. While mass shootings in public places tend to receive more media attention, the majority of these shootings actually occur in private homes.

Between 2009 and 2020, 61 percent of mass shootings occurred entirely in the home and another 9 percent occurred partially in a home and partially in a public location. Thirty percent occurred entirely in public spaces like schools, malls, or bars. Of these public mass shootings, the majority (59 percent) occurred at least partially in a place of business such as a restaurant or retail store, and 11 percent occurred in a school.6 These public mass shootings were deadlier: While 39 percent of mass shootings occurred at least in part in public, they resulted in 51 percent of all mass-shooting deaths over this 12-year period.

I don’t believe there is any real “war on guns”.

What there *IS*, is much frustration that any reasonable suggestion for gun control is characterized as a gun grab instead of a legislative brake on gun OWNERS and their behavior.

My modest proposal, which I first saw on Stonekettle Station, is to make gun safety rules have the force of law. It mostly amounts to eliminating the idea of “negligent” discharge of a firearm from the law. If a shot is fired and injures or kills someone, the responsible party gets nailed with full civil and criminal penalties. And make the law so that there is always a responsible party.

Of course this does nothing about mass shooting and the like, but it would clean up gun culture substantially, and it would eventually also cut down on the toll from accidents and improperly secured guns.

When Sandy Hook happened, the immediate reaction of a gun fanatic friend was to send an email blast expressing his concern that limitations would be placed on his access to firearms. He expressed no sympathy for those who died.

One law that should be implemented is if a child uses a gun to harm someone, the adult who owns the gun should be given an automatic jail term. I’m tired of people claiming no one could foresee the numerous accidents or crimes that occur when adults are not careful in limiting access to their weapons. And anyone involved in straw purchases should be given an automatic 20 year sentence. Everyone who provides a gun to someone must first get a background check on that person and cannot complete the transaction if the recipient fails the check; if someone provides a gun to another without conducting the check, the person should be subject to a prison term.

I am tired of the violence in this nation due to the widespread distribution of lethal weapons.

People in civilized countries have health insurance they can rely on, have a better work/life balance, and won’t die on the streets if they lose their job. That has to improve mental health.

re: #175 Hecuba’s daughter

Have you noticed, though, that it’s not 40 year-old Asian women who do the mass shootings? Yes, the weapon is the weapon, but it’s not black college professors and retired orchestra conductors who are doing the mass shootings.

I don’t believe there is any real “war on guns”.

What there *IS*, is much frustration that any reasonable suggestion for gun control is characterized as a gun grab instead of a legislative brake on gun OWNERS and their behavior.

I’ve long since pivoted from any notion of “gun control” to “gun owner accountability”

re: #152 EPR-radar

” If a shot is fired and injures or kills someone”

Actual injury is not enough

If a gun is used in any way that could potentially harm someone..
Ie brandish, threaten, shoot and miss, shoot in the air, etc

Control your weapon at all times, or else!

That’s why I want gun owners going to prison for substantial time for allowing others to access and misuse their weapons, whether deliberately or through carelessness. Or for their transferring weapons to others who have not passed background checks.

It would look like me burying PVC tubes on a dry hillside.

re: #186 Eclectic Cyborg

This is fucking Sandy Hook all over again. A decade later and we still haven’t done shit about guns in this country because of all the assholes who are just fine living in a society where this is a normal fucking occurrence.

It’s not their kids
