A poem I wrote a few hours ago:

19 BULLETS

Nineteen bullets, that’s what it took.
A man possessed.
A deadly look.

Filled with anger, his mind devoted
Fury raging.
Weapons loaded.

Down the hallway, through the door
No place to hide
Here anymore.

There’s screams and shouts. A thousand tears.
Confusion. Chaos.
Panic. Fear.

Children weep, the cries are haunting.
The killer hovers,
Waiting, wanting.

Uncertain minutes, turn to hours.
It needs to stop
But who has the power?

Finally, madness ends its reign.
Replaced by grief
And constant pain.

A somber outcome, scattered traces.
A wall of smiling
Little faces.

A jarring loss of hope to muster
As talking heads
on TV bluster.

What happens next? Where do we start?
How do you heal
All these broken hearts?

Wading through unanswered questions.
Truth is hidden
By flawed suggestions.

What do you say
When on the phone
To a mother in an empty home?

You can’t believe it, you wonder “How?”
And hope
That God is there somehow.

These tragic hours.
A city shook.
Nineteen bullets was what it took.

When I was a kid we had air raid drills. FUCKIN AIR RAIDS!! We all marched down to the basement, sat down with knees up and covered our heads with our arms.

When my kids were kids they had tornado drills. Same thing but without the “duck & cover.”

Now my grandkids have active shooter drills.

I should mention that at my penultimate job we also had “active shooter” drills during which I crawled underneath my work space (my co-workers were too big to do that) and I pulled an overturned equipment cart in front of me. I also had a 3” pocket knife that the previous occupant had left in the cubicle. My plan was to stab the shooter in the Achilles tendon.

At my last job we didn’t have “active shooter” drills because it was “open office” plan so we were all sitting ducks anyway.

Yes, she certainly has been beating the drum on that issue. Something that I have not seen in the rest of the media.

She has also been pointing out the ways that Durham’s litigator has been ignoring the Judge’s rulings and bringing in data that had been ruled out of bounds.

In a normal legal environment, I would have assumed that any trail errors or misbehavior would be caught on appeal.

In these current days of legal Calvinball, I have no idea what is going to happen.

Yes, this-without benefit of a convincing explanation—is so frustrating. Certainly this will lead to appeal, but from all I’ve read it should never get to that stage. And that stock photo of Durham triggers me much as the Bolton photos do. He’s definitely sucking soup out of that mustache with his lower lip.

Alongside her post, Amy shared a video of herself reading the letter aloud, in which she slammed her aunt Michelle Duggar and Josh’s wife, Anna Duggar, for pleading that the judge give him a lighter sentence. “I am not interested in providing false character references for Josh, as other members of my family have so recklessly done,” she read, describing him as a “monster” that she believes “will offend again.”

Enough of this shit. The GOP should be barred from bringing suit in court or initiating investigations because it is a chronically vexatious and frivolous litigant.

The only exception should be if they get a 90% or higher blessing from a legal review office with 10 professionals in it, none of whom can be Federalist society hacks, and that includes at least 3 Democrats and 3 progressives.

Reactionaries are more scared of noncompliant kids than dead ones.

A shooter ultimately fits into their framework of aggrieved, transactional manliness—I get to do this because I was not granted the deference I was taught to expect, because I’m allowed to uncork my anger on people—more than a kid that asks “why?”

In fact…dead kids are pretty useful because they can’t speak up or define themselves. They perfectly moldable into whatever reactionaries need.

You may remember that after the Buffalo shooting, there were a bunch of neo-Nazi and pro-Russian trolls claiming the dis-information that the Ukrainian Azov Battalion used the sonnenrad, was connected to the Buffalo shooter, and that everybody should therefore support Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

I believe that when the Ukrainian government reformed it’s military after the 2014 Invasion and absorbed the Azov Battalion into the Army, it purged as much as it could of Azov’s neo-Nazism. Including, as of 2015, the use of the sonnenrad as a unit symbol..

You may remember that I posted this map a week and a half ago:

It is beginning to look like the Russians may have broken through where the innermost pincers are marked. The ones labelled “June 2022?”. (Centered around Lyman to the North and Popasna to the South.)

In terms of area, the pocket looks like maybe 20 miles by 20 miles.

The Ukrainian military had approximately 4 Brigades in that area. (~5000 soldiers. Maybe less.) However they had been taking hundreds of casualties over the past few weeks. And there is no word whether the Ukrainians will keep their troops in the ‘kessel’ or withdraw them while they still can. If they do attempt to withdraw, there are only a couple of good roads available. And those roads are likely to be under Russian artillery fire soon.

The pincers are to just to the West of where the Russians made several failed attempts to cross the Siversky-Donets Rivers. There are a number of towns along that part of the river and their situation is also not clear.

Russian casualties have also been high and while their performance has improved over the past month, it is still not that good.

My assumption has been that the Russians, as bad as they are at this invasion thing, will just keep throwing bodies at Ukraine until Putin’s objectives are met.

How long can this go on?

For a while I suppose.

Many people keep claiming that Russia will run out of money, or out of this or that material… but so far Russia has not stopped.

Because Putin doesn’t care about how much this costs.

If Putin cared about body counts, etc., he would have done something by now to stop.

Yes, I agree.

That is definitely the hope. Reportedly, the Ukrainians have been able to build a sizeable reserve (up to 30 btgs) and are moving some of those to contain any part of any Russian breakthrough that is not screwed up by the Russians themselves.

Also reportedly, some of the assault troops that the Russians have been using are Press- Ganged Ukrainians from the puppet Donetsk Peoples Republic. And from what I have been hearing, dying for Putin is not high on their wishlist.

By the way, thanks for pointing out the Markos Moulitsas account! (I assume that you are referring to him. I didn’t see any other Markos.) I like his attitude and posts. Although he did need to fix his cover/hat for his son’s graduation.

True, the Russia Army and the Russian National Leadership have not historically been concerned about body counts.

You raise an interesting question.

When is Russia going to run out of the ability to continue an attack. While it hasn’t happened yet, a lot of analysts have been predicting some time in the early fall.

This prediction is based upon a lot of questions and assumptions.

One big question is whether Putin officially calls up the reserves and the draftees. And how he uses them. If Putin doesn’t, then the Russian Army will grind to a halt at some point this year.

If Putin does call up the reserves and draftees and lets them get trained and organized into units which would then need to train, the process will be many months. If the masses of unorganized and untrained luckless are just thrown into combat… Well, the survivors will be adequate soldiers. However few that might be.

Meanwhile, the Russian Army is trying to get volunteers at up to age 40. And bringing out tanks from the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. And bringing back a retired general to pilot a plane. One analyst noted that this is not… ‘optimal’.

Well, the Hundred Years’ war lasted (checks Wikipedia) 116 years.

There is plenty of precedence for a conflict lasting decades.

How long were we in Afghanistan?

Anyway, the invasion of Ukraine is already off the front page in America, replaced by the weekly atrocities in this own problematic society.

and the longer this goes on, the more training the UA troops get on NATO equipment, which appears to be a force multiplier in comparison to existing Russian equipment.

It will be a long slog, full of tragedy as they continue to uncover atrocities, but Ukraine have been promised assistance from the West, I don’t see the Chinese or much of anyone else stepping up to take the place of businesses that are fleeing Russia. Nor will you see much from Russian media about what is going on inside, as they’re all mouthpieces for the current government.

I wonder which may come first, the collapse of the government and a coup or the Ukrainians defeat of Russia and removal of all forces within their borders. This will still take time, and I believe its on the side of the Ukrainians.

They’re also apparently desperate enough to start shipping in t62 tanks into Ukraine. Putin was 9 years old when those things were introduced. So I think that they’ll run out of usable equipment before they run out of bodies. The sanctions seem to be doing a good job of crippling their weapons manufacturing capabilities.

But the Russians have been willing to suffer casualties that would lead other nations to rethink their objectives. It would seem that only the demise of Putin (however it came about) would lead to a Russian government that may stop this bloodbath. I fear for the ultimate outcome and the toll is taking on the people of Ukraine.

Yes, it appears that one of Putin’s goals is to continually traumatize the population of Ukraine. The goal is presumably to cause much of the population to simple give up and emigrate and the rest to simply surrender to the Russians.

That is why a lot of the experts are saying that Russia has to be defeated to the point that they cannot attempt another attack against Ukraine. Not easily done to a country with a large nuclear force.

Masha Gessen appears to think that the only way to stop Russia will be to force another national collapse and disintegration upon it.

I’m glad that we survived the original collapse of the Soviet Union. I do not know what a second collapse would involve. Both in terms of how we could get there without global war. Nor what the resulting global order would be. And how it would affect our own internal political and social order.

I think that is why the leadership in Germany, France, and people like Kissinger are so unenthusiastic about such an end result. As they say, interesting times.

And the Chinese too.

Sure, it’s easy to ascribe China’s action wrt Ukraine as wanting to make sure that they are not following the US and that China must be seen as it’s own power, that smaller nations will need.

And of course the loony right wing froth mindless about China but I ascribe that to bigotry and racism.

From a practical point of view, though, is that China share a long border with Russia, and within Russia and its smaller neighbors (over which it still has influence) are groups that would like to oppose China’s treatment of fellow Muslims, etc.

Kissinger, soulless though he may be, understands that putting Russia into collapse will affect the whole world.

And we don’t know what the unintended consequences may be.

France, or specifically Macron, wants the war to go away so he can get back to his project of a Europe with Russia that could form a new political and military power bloc with France, naturally, steering the way.

Germany, or specifically a bunch of the SPD and CDU leadership, want the war to go away so that they can get back to their nice gas deals and warm self-righteousness that they’re fixing all the bad of the 20th century while ignoring their inconvenient little Eastern neighbors whining about freedom and liberty and not getting invaded and slaughtered.

Kissinger has a hardon for dictators and his current policy position can be reasoned out by checking his bank account.

China got lied to by Putin about the splendid little three day war and is pissed off about their putative ally fucking up their national-sovereignty-above-all message, and is trying to both-sides the war until it hopefully goes away. And has no desire to get stuck with a bunch of Western sanctions to pull Putin’s ass out of a fire he gleefully lept into.

The only thing that will stop Putin is a decisive military defeat. One in which the Russian armed forces are pushed out of eastern Ukraine and bottled up in Crimea, with their freedom of movement completely lost.

That’s when you go to the negotiating table, from a position of absolute strength, to force the enemy to sue for peace.

Clearly, as you imply, a trigger lock would have done nothing here. But what about so many other situations where one could have prevented a disaster?

After these events i think an error we make in general is focusing on the specific circumstances and how to stop events like *it* rather than the much larger more generic carnage numbers.

Mass shootings are kind of one offs. Each one hard to identify or predict. Yes there are some successes even in the last 2 days. But some quiet methodical nutter will always slip through.

Its all the other gun behavior we can very easily do something about.
Like trigger locks, or storage rules, or punishment for all manner of carelessness. Or selling lending giving or transferring to someone not allowed to possess.

Your gun. Your responsibility. All the time. No matter what.

Something to be said for the practical effects guys who worked on that movie invented and revolutionized the processes that are still in use. Practical effects have a weight to them that doesn’t exist when you try CGI for everything. That’s why the prequel fight scenes seem to miss something despite the intricate battles that they display and render on the screen.

It’s why the new trilogy does better visually - it takes its cues not from CGI work, but from the practical effects, and it shows.

I am too young to have seen them in their original state, but I remember the first time I went over to a friend’s house and watched the classic Star Wars on VHS. I was transfixed. All you do is change the venue of where the shooting occurs - from an enclosed classroom to the entry areas or grounds of same school.

And it’s not like mass shootings and gun violence don’t occur in the US in all of the following:

churches;
synagoguges;
movie theaters;
shopping malls;
playgrounds;
supermarkets;
streets;
apartment buildings;
single family homes;
office buildings;
manufacturing plants;
post offices;
factories;
logistics hubs;
parks;
subways;
buses;

And apologies for missing some location not identified above. We’ve lost track of all the venues where mass shootings occur because there are so many.

Secure the doors? What about a public school that has a campus and multiple buildings spread out across the campus that isn’t fenced in? What about colleges that have dozens of buildings spread over 10s and dozens of acres? What about apartment buildings?

All of this is a deflection of course - from the root cause of gun violence in the US:

lax gun laws that allow people to get firearms easily. And we have no way currently to stop people from getting guns like the AR-15, which are frequently used in high profile mass shootings. There’s no reason anyone needs a firearm like that; you can’t hunt with it. If you need an AR-15 to hunt, you suck at hunting. It’s designed with one purpose in mind: to kill as many people as possible, and manufacturers have given those firearms all kinds of add-ons that can make them even more lethal, with expanded clips/magazines to allow for less need to reload between clips/magazines.

How did a guy who had no job scrounge up enough money to not only buy the AR-15 but the ammo for same? How did a guy who didn’t have a driver’s license get the firearm in the first place?

Seems like it was real easy to get a gun with no questions asked. On demand firearms.

I have a grudge: lemme get a gun and settle matters.

It’s been done before - and the Zodiac Killer had a somewhat similar idea back in 1969. In one of his letters, he wrote that he’d contemplated “just shoot out the front tire [referring to a school bus] & then pick off the kiddies as they come bouncing out”.

Then of course, we had Andrew Kehoe, whose insane tax protest in 1927 involved blowing up an entire school. Which he did: en.wikipedia.org

When Trump appears at the NRA convention this weekend, I wonder how many different things other than guns he will blame for the Buffalo and Uvalde massacres. The usuals are rap music, video games, mental illness, lack of school prayer, and lack of armed security guards/teachers in schools. We’ve seen the Right add to the list this month furries, the transgendered, illegal immigrants and doors. Anything they can think of other than guns.

Threats of violence are seen to be covered by “free speech” and have become an accepted part of public discourse. Remember those calls for “Second Amendment solutions?” “Don’t retreat, reload!” and “Hang Mike Pence”?

And the default template script for GOP candidates seems to involve them firing weapons at, blowing up, burning or otherwise demolishing some object which is supposed to symbolize Government Interference/Tyranny/Oppression, etc….

That’s made the news here in Czech Republic. Needless to say, most Czechs find it scandalous.

That’s because people were livid when something similar happened here a few years back. There was a mass shooting incident at a small bar in Uherský Brod; the regular city cops showed up within minutes, assessed the situation and called in a tactical unit (like a SWAT unit, basically). The tactical unit arrived within a few more minutes - and then waited until there was no more shooting. When later asked about that by Czech reporters on the scene, their commanding officer said (translated), “Well ya know, we figured after we heard that last gunshot that everyone, including the shooter, was already dead, so no point rushing in there and getting shot.” 🙄

The commanding officer was fired a week or so later and all tactical units, who are part of the national police, were ordered to undergo re-training on how to properly respond to an active shooter incident.

I’m not defending the actions of the officers. But we’ve demonized law enforcement to the point that there are far fewer rewards for being a hero, for taking risks. When your culture makes George Floyd the hero, real heroes stand down. Cultural rot has consequences.

so since when has “holding people responsible for their actions” come to mean “demonizing” them?

Because that is all that the George Floyd incident (and other previous and subsequent cases) has ever been about. George Floyd was never a hero, he was a victim.

Cultural rot has set in, but not where they assert that it has…

They are taught overtly and subtly that they are part of the privileged class, and this means specifically that they have rights that others around them do not. They have the right to women on demand, they have the right to hurt others, they have the right to be heard and respected, and most importantly, they do not have to suffer consequences. Gun rights in America are not about guns or freedom or anything else - they are about the right of the privileged in group to take lives if they so choose.

All places have disaffected people, poor mental health care, despair, and the like. But most nations reserve the use of force for the state - that’s one of the points of having a nation-state in the first place, that it gets a monopoly on the use of force and theoretically uses it judiciously for the greater good. Americans do not believe in this - they believe that the privileged class also is able to use lethal force at their discretion and they are given the tools to do it, cheaply and easily. This isn’t just a RWNJ idea - I think a majority of Americans don’t really see a problem with the idea of shooting someone who’s shoplifting, fleeing the scene of a crime, resisting arrest, or even just being belligerent in a bar. And this is why, as a nation, America is okay with human sacrifice, as long as the protected class remains privileged.

They believe that school shootings are allowed because God hates godless liberals, and if we were all forced to be good Christian people by the state, then God would smile on us and take away the evil people who engage in school shootings. Dominionism in action.

Shiplord Kirel: Fan of Big Bird, Bert, and Ernie  May 26, 2022 • 8:52:36am

The (Republican) elephant in the living room: racism. The goobers apply their contrived interpretation of the Second Amendment because they believe they MUST have massive firepower to hold off the hordes that will pour out of the inner cities to loot and rape “when the welfare checks stop.” Being racist, they further believe that these hordes are utterly mindless in their greed and lust, and will keep coming, zombie like, until they are all killed. Hence, their million round ammo stashes.
To them, a few hundred dead children a year are a small price to pay for the ability to protect millions of whites, especially white women, from the crazed masses. This latest massacre is finally getting a few of them to admit that they think it is really worth the price, something all of them have thought silently from the beginning.
As an aside, I wonder what white welfare recipients (the actual majority) plan to do on the prophesied day when the checks stop? We’ve all seen the goobers who apparently can’t afford haircuts or groceries but can spend thousands on rifles and elaborate accessories. Why?
The suburban ammosexuals never address this question because they don’t even suspect that white welfare recipients even exist.

From the picture way above, the rest of the force has been trained to believe that SWAT is to be used in cases like this. But, like not having your gun in a defensive position at all times makes it basically worthless, not having your SWAT team sitting in their truck waiting to be called out immediately makes them less than optimal.

What’s funny is, the lack of timeliness involved in calling out the SWAT team makes them completely irrelevant in the situations for which they are most suited, i.e. real-time response to extremely dangerous situations with high stakes.

The book I’m reading right now—Jesus and John Wayne—is very good on how white Christian nationalism that was formerly small-time apolitical evangelical movements from the 1960s and ’70s began to link up into networks that of course have lots of hard-right politicians on speed dial and have infected everything from LE to the military (especially Air Force Academy) to the homeschool movement. The evolutionary leaps were the anti-abortion crusades and the link up with the NRA. Hardwired now for patriarchy and masculine displays of force through arms. The photo above of Jesus with an AR15 is not parody to them. They literally hate images of Jesus as some kind of turn-the-other-cheek wimp. Jesus is “badass.”
