The big story, other than the weather, is the arraignment of the man who shot and killed his wife and two adult daughters in Lexington. May has been the deadliest month in Lexington in ten years.

If you look at what the GOP does, as opposed to what they say, they support more school massacres.

Repugs have actually said that school shootings help make the case for home schooling and its inbred cousin, the school choice/voucher scam. This is one of their priorities as a party, transfer billions in public school funding into the hands of local hucksters and pulpit pimps.

According to Insider’s reporting, which is behind a paywall, Alex Kipman, who invented Microsoft’s HoloLens mixed-realty headset and currently oversees the company’s metaverse efforts, bears the brunt of the criticism. One story involves Kipman in 2016 or 2017, wearing a VR headset that was also mirrored on a nearby monitor, where everyone in the room could see what he was viewing. The content was not very work-safe, and it made many of the women in the room “very uncomfortable.”

From the Insider report: “In the video that filled the screen, several young women in skimpy clothing frolicked on a bed; an overtly sexualized pillow fight ensued. An employee who was present, speaking with Insider later, described the scene as “VR porn.” The assembled staffers exchanged confused glances, and a couple of them walked out.”

Kipman is later accused of fostering “a culture that diminishes women’s contributions.”

In another instance, Kipman rubbed a woman employee’s shoulders despite her looking “deeply uncomfortable” and did not lay off even after the employee “shrugged her shoulders, apparently trying to make him stop.”

Perhaps even more damning, managers went to great lengths not to leave women around Kipman. There is even an accusation that Kipman had to have “chaperones” from human resources during meetings (Microsoft denied the practice). And last year, more than 25 employees contributed to a report about Kipman’s inappropriate behavior, although no actions were taken.

Indeed, a blessing in disguise was the pandemic, as it meant no one had to work with Kipman in person, according to one former executive who worked with him.

A new report calls out Alex Kipman and other Microsoft execs for ‘verbal abuse and sexual harassment’ (Windows Central)

Only the GOP would think that the cause of too many school shootings is that there are too many schools.

I’m actually glad that we’re seeing more of these mutants admit the truth: Retaining their AR-15s is so important to them because they think those AR-15s are needed for a race war. To them, leaving the white race, especially white women, without a way to hold off the zombie hordes is much worse than a few hundred dead children a year.

I know that early reports are often wrong, and often wrong in ways that boggle, but the way events are being reported here, it seems as though no one knows what happened and why cops didn’t act to stop the carnage. This particular town has about 15,000 living there, and they’ve got a SWAT that they’re so proud of? I find that particularly odd.

I live in a town in northern NJ with a population of about 15,000. No SWAT needed. If events warrant, there’s county sheriff’s office and mutual support for county-wide SWAT.

Programmes of violence,
As entertainment,
Brings the disease into your room.
We know the germ,
Which is man-made in metal,
Is really a key to your own tomb.
Prevention is better than cure,
Bad apples affecting the pure,
You’ll gather your senses I’m sure
Then agree to,
Melt the guns,
Melt the guns,
Melt the guns,
And never more to fire them.
Melt the guns,
Melt the guns,
Melt the guns,
And never more desire them.
Children will want them,
Mothers supply them,
As long as your killers are heroes.
And all the media
Will fiddle while Rome burns,
Acting like modern-time Neros.
Prevention is better than cure,
Bad apples affecting the pure,
You’ll gather your senses I’m sure
Then agree to,
Melt the guns,
Melt the guns,
Melt the guns,
And never more to fire them.
Melt the guns,
Melt the guns,
Melt the guns,
And never more desire them.
I’m speaking to the Justice League of America.
The you S of A,
Hey you,
Yes you in particular!
When it comes to the judgement day and you’re standing at the gates with your weaponry,
You dead go down on one knee,
Clasp your hands in prayer and start quoting me,
‘cause we say…
Our father we’ve managed to contain the epidemic in one place, now,
Let’s hope they shoot themselves instead of others,
Help to civilize the race now.
We’ve trapped the cause of the plague,
In the land of the free and the home of the brave.
If we listen quietly we can hear them shooting from grave to grave.
You ought to,
Melt the guns,
Melt the guns,
Melt the guns,
And never more to fire them.

Well, I’m my own mechanic, so….

I actually built it with a triple when I got the frame. Even adjusted it so it worked reasonably well. But then I got a hankering for a double, so I RE-built it with full 8-speed Dura Ace, about the same age as the frame (1995). Kept it that way for 4 months, but at 64 I’m too old to do much climbing in 39x25. So I RE-rebuilt it with R8000 Ultegra.

Uffington White Horse

Youtube Video

David Bedford’s 1978 score The Song of the White Horse was commissioned for a BBC television documentary. The work charts a journey along an ancient Berkshire footpath between a stone-age burial mound and the famous White Horse of Uffington, celebrating King Alfred’s victory over the Danes at the Battle of Englefield in the 9th century (using words by G.K. Chesterton). Set for small ensemble and a children’s choir, it famously climaxes with the choir reaching stratospherically high notes by inhaling Helium gas.

The fact that the gunman responsible for this week’s massacre in Uvalde, Texas, was able to buy two AR-15s days after his 18th birthday highlights how much easier it is for Americans to purchase rifles than handguns.

Under federal law, Americans buying handguns from licensed dealers must be at least 21, which would have precluded Salvador Ramos from buying that type of weapon. That trumps Texas law, which only requires buyers of any type of firearm to be 18 or older.

If she wanted to be recognized, she sure could have done it! And the hate just made me so sick, I even replied to a couple of the twits, which I almost never do.

GAAH!

There are entire Twitter accounts that are dedicated to Hating Meghan Markle. White people have way too much time on their hands.

One of the things that makes chess both frustrating and intriguing is the wide range of capabilities, even in one player, in one game. Just played a short 10 minute game with someone who played really nicely out of the open with white. Maintained the initiative. Forced me into an unpleasant exchange sequence that did me no favors. could have picked up an exchange with a one-move tactic, but missed it. Could have simply won a pawn twice, on two successive moves. Missed it. Let me get into rook endgame a pawn up, which likely would have been a draw, and which I then proceeded to lose on time because I got intrigued by it and forgot the clock was running. So, we both suck. We both are fully capable of making idiotic moves, but also some decent ones as well. it’s just an irritating way to play a game. Makes it feel more like gambling than skill.

Amish man accidentally killed girl in horse-drawn-buggy with stray gunshot, will serve 30 days in jail

COLUMBUS, Ohio - An Ohio Amish man will serve 30 days in jail for firing a bullet into the air that inadvertently killed a 15-year-old girl driving a horse-drawn buggy more than a mile away, a prosecutor said Wednesday.

As part of an agreement with prosecutors, 28-year-old Marion Yoder pleaded guilty Tuesday to a misdemeanor count of negligent homicide, said Steve Knowling, the prosecutor for Holmes County in northern Ohio.

A judge sentenced Yoder to the maximum 180 days in the county jail, but suspended all but 30 days of the term. Yoder will be on probation for three years and will have to go back to jail for the full term if he violates it.

It’s _the_ consideration in Wisconsin. In farmland, every house is in range of a rifle in a deer field. Shotguns or muzzleloaders are much more appropriate, though even here areas that should still be limited are being opened up by the GOP. Interestingly, rural counties where rich GOPers live are not being opened up. Funny that, eh?

Still a .30 rifle can be used appropriately if you have a sane hunter. Side note: I do not consider anyone using the AR in 5.56 to hunt with to be a “sane hunter” and feral pigs are not appropriate game for an AR rifle.

Imo this is not a winning argument and never will be. Why people want a particular weapon is not relevant. As long as they’re allowed to have em.

Yes there are limits on machine guns etc. No one even wants to revisit there. But the AR-15 etc would be something new and never gonna happen in this environment.

So forget the iron.
Let em have what they want. Spend their $.

Focus on bad behavior and responsibility.
Consequences for when they misuse/ lose control of their precious.

It’s a much easier sell to understand.

Your gun. You’re responsible.
Who else could be but you?

This is the sort of leniency that has to end. If a trigger of a gun is deliberately pulled, that is a premeditated act. If someone dies as a result of that trigger pull, the starting point should be murder 1, with self-defense (real, not Rittenhouse bullshit) being the only affirmative defense.

That was I, and I still think it was a bad idea at the time, unnecessary considering how far we were from being able to institute it even if Beto had won, and likely to alienate more people than it would win over. It was too deep, not too soon of course since there had already been many massacres, but premature in the sense that Texas voters were not ready for it. Cruz certainly exploited it. I also didn’t like the confrontational style, reinforcing the insane Repug fantasy that Democrats are hell bent on confiscating all guns. It would have been better to introduce the idea of restrictions on new sales combined with a buy back. Things change

My gun control positions have not changed in several years.
1. Vetting and licensing of owners.
2. Mandatory insurance
3. Safe storage subject to ATF (not yokel police) inspection
4. Universal background checks.

These measures have worked very well in countries where they have been introduced. Contrary to much NRA/Repug propaganda, people in Canada, Australia and New Zealand own and regularly use millions of guns. There are 1.5 million guns in New Zealand, about 1 for every 3 people. This is far less than the US, with 1.2 guns per person, but still a long way from prohibition.

They have strict training and testing requirements.

I remember ammosexuals holding up Switzerland and Israel as examples of what America should be like after Newtown. But then you’d press them about if they really wanted to force all gun owners to be restricted to a license for a single handgun (or rifle if they’re a military vet), have to pass screenings for mental illness and background checks for past criminal behavior, be required (in the case of the Swiss) to belong to a shooting club in order to maintain your readiness, and be restricted to transporting your firearm (which must be in a state-approved case) either to the club or to an approved hunting ground if it should ever leave your house.

Usually the goobers would just then whine that they wanted a state-issued assault rifle like the Swiss or to be able to lug around an old WWII-era K98k like the female teacher in the picture they’d pass around as proof that all Israelis are packing because “THEY COULD BE ATTACKED AT ANY MOMENT!!!”

Did I miss an announcement that they’d finally determined this latest shooter had been diagnosed with depression and put on SSRIs? Because the line I’ve been hearing since Tuesday is that he’s never been evaluated, committed, or in any way subjected to the sort of testing necessary to be prescribed anti-depressants, let alone the SSRIs that supposedly are the cause of all school shootings.

Well no, we didn’t ban planes. We instead put a stop on air travel for several days while we investigated what went wrong, put temporary restrictions in place to prevent a repeat, and then totally overhauled our airport security system to limit the possibility of future attacks. Every time an attempt was foiled, new restrictions were put in place, even if it meant the howling of wingnuts who hated being inconvenienced.

And guess what? We’ve never had a repeat of 9/11.

My gun control positions have not changed in several years.

Neither have mine

Control your weapons at all times
If you dont , lose your freedom, finances, and 2a future privileges.
That’s and, not or.

No gun safe? Some kid got ahold of it, didn’t even shoot it? Too bad. Jail it is.
you’re gonna get sued and/or fined for negligence, damages, etc. No insurance? Too bad. No assets? we’ll garnish your life.
You loaned it to someone not allowed to possess? you didn’t know, didn’t check? Too bad, now you lose your 2a privs.

yes, your life should be destroyed if you’re a fuck up.
Or don’t take on the responsibility and risks of gun ownership.

Control your weaponry at all times.
If you do, the rest of us will totally ignore you and your gun collection.

Teachers unions plan to protest NRA convention

Leaders of the nation’s two largest teachers unions will travel to Houston to push gun safety on the same day as the National Rifle Association’s upcoming convention.

Driving the news: Becky Pringle, president of the National Education Association, and Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, will speak on gun safety on May 27 as thousands of gun owners descend on Houston for the NRA’s annual convention. The announcement follows Tuesday’s mass shooting at a Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, which left at least 21 people dead, including 19 children and two adults.

State of play: Pringle and Weingarten “will highlight the NRA’s negligence” and discuss how to keep communities and schools safe, the American Federation of Teachers said in a press release sent to Axios.
Two teachers who survived school shootings in the Parkland and Sandy Hook shootings will be in attendance.

The bottom line is that we — as a nation, voluntarily or involuntarily — have now had the full Republican experience.

And now that we know what it is, we’re no longer listening to the Republican politicians who are continuing to try to sell us this bullshit.

I have a lot of experience with feral hogs. They are a very serious problem but the scenario, hogs swarming on even after dozens are shot, is ridiculous. If you really did have a pack charging you, they would veer off and hide after one or perhaps two were shot. They are very smart animals.

I was struck by how similar the purported hog behavior in this scenario is to another right wing fantasy: The zombie-like behavior of inner city populations “when the welfare checks stop.”

I wonder if they’re including javelina (not a pig or hog, they’re peccaries) in the count of “feral hogs.” Javelina have been raised as a food animal, most notably by the Aztecs, but some people actually farm them.

As for Texas, it’s 268,597 square miles. That works out to 5.6 hogs per square mile. I do not know about feral hogs, but I do know that javelina wander around in packs. I could tell you stories about (usually nocturnal) encounters with javelina here in Arizona.

The wingnut “solution” was what you would expect: Arm the other passengers, because terrorists would be scared off if they feared that everybody else on the plane was packing a gun.

My facebook.com post:

19 kids and two teachers killed (and a husband who died of a heart attack yesterday, leaving four kids without either parent), and somewhere around 20 shot. And the mad rush from those claiming to be Christian is to defend their guns and find another excuse to do nothing.

You know the story of the shootout at the OK Corral, right? The one immortalized in every story about Wyatt Earp? You know how the reason for the shootout was that Earp had imposed a no gun policy on the Dodge, and some decided to test it? Imagine him being here today and wondering what the hell people are thinking believing that people walking around with guns is a good thing.

19 children dead. And two teachers.

You know what I hear when I hear “It’s not the guns it’s the people”? I hear people who are too irresponsible to own guns. I hear people who don’t understand that it’s purpose is to kill, and don’t treat it properly. We keep knives from children because they don’t understand how dangerous they are and cannot properly handle them. And that’s why I hear when I hear adults who won’t acknowledge that guns are dangers, that they are actually children, and are irresponsible.

19 children dead.

I see the Republican solution is to decide that schools should only have one entrance. It’s not a solution, it’s a farce. First, they would never actually spend the money on it. Second, their designs would lead to more deaths. One door in means one door out. One headline reads “Hundreds of kids died in a fire as they were unable to get out of the building as it burned.” Another one reads “Shooters, after pulling the smoke alarm, killed dozens of kids as they streamed out the only exit.” Oh, wait, that already happened, at Westside Middle School in Jonesboro, AR, Sherry’s home town, back in 1998. It would happen again.

Two teachers.

Did you hear about the way the police acted? How it started is blurry at the moment, but we do know this because of witnesses and some video: The cops ran in and got their children out, and then stood around and fought with parents who wanted them to do their damn job. The sheriff confirmed today that the police didn’t go in because they were afraid of getting shot. SAY WHAT?!! Turn in your f-in’ uniform. They actually arrested a mom, and when the freed her, she got her own kids out. They should have been in there, and if they were the brave cops I keep hearing about, they would have considered it their job to protect the lives of all of those kids.

And multiple kids injured.

You ever played with one of those Chinese finger puzzles, the one where you stick a finger in each end and try to get out by pulling on it? For me, it’s a great analogy for a lot of things, like my job as a software developer, and now. Too many people think that if we just pull harder, just add more guns, we will get out of this. But it’s ridiculously obvious that it’s just making it worse. There is no defensive solution that will make this better, no amount of guns, no amount of walls, no amount of cops standing guard will keeps schools, churches, grocery stores, concert venues, clubs, and parades safe. To get out of the puzzle, you have to push your fingers together; you have to do the opposite of what you kept wanting to do. It is time for us to stop trying to fix this with more guns because it won’t work.

“Oh, but…” How many active shooter drills did you go through as a kid? For me, it was none. And every classroom door at Anson Jones elementary opened to the outside. Why is that? Why did we not have to train to try hide so that a shooter wouldn’t see us? Why did none of us have to decide if we were going to take a bullet for our classmates if the shooter got in? Was it because people were less evil? Nope. Hell, crime is half of what it was when I was a kid. The only crime statistic that is higher than when we were kids is gun violence. Let me state that again:

The. Only. Crime. Statistic. That. Is. Higher. Than. When. We. Were. Kids. Is. Gun. Violence.

Guns are dangerous. Period. And guns, by definition, when used, violate the space around other people. You know, that space where your freedom ends and mine begins? The space that says I can’t just walk up and slap you? Guns do that, and there’s no choice in the matter. There’s no “Sorry, you can’t do that.”

Did you hear that parents are having to give DNA swabs to help identify their kids, because the guns he used tore them to pieces? Did you hear about the dad who found out his daughter was dead because he was cleaning a friend of hers and she mentioned her name? Can you feel anything for the parents other than thinking that you would have somehow stopped the shooter? Did you hear about the dad in Arlington today who took a gun to his kid’s school to pick them up and shot himself in the foot?

Did you hear that he waited until his 18th birthday, the day he was legally allowed to buy then, before he spent his money? Did you know he couldn’t buy a handgun until he’s 21 but was somehow able to buy an AR-15 at 18? Imagine if we’d had real laws, like background checks, training requirements, and insurance.

It’s time for all of us to be adults. And part of being adults is recognizing when you’re playing in a fantasy world that isn’t real. And part of it is giving up something you might like because it might be hurting others. Sometimes, that is small, like choosing not to go out to dinner or to buy that thing you want because the kid has school expenses. And sometimes, it’s giving up something that seems awesome - and btw, I would love to go to a range to shoot one, in the same way that sometime, I’m going to that place over off of George Bush where I can operate a front loader - because it is definitely hurting others, it’s hurting kids.

And no, this isn’t a call to ban all guns. This is the fact that regular citizens do not need semi-automatic weapons that were originally designed for the military, and that people do not need to be walking around with the weapons, and everyone needs to be trained and insured. We once decided that Tommy guns had no place in our country, a moved backed by the NRA by the way, and no one’s 2nd amendment rights disappeared.

It’s time we get back to school being a place where kids worried about homework, grades, who likes who, and what color the cat should be in the picture. And that’s on us adults. Requiring kids to live in a war zone is our failure.
