He continues to succeed because he’s cheaper than a more intellectual or spiritual reactionary; pay him and he will output the absolute minimum of pretext required to imagine that one’s base appetites are moral.

We said the names and rung a bell, we can now move on to using these dead kids to declare what we want to do anyway to be moral and inspired.

More information about what I think was a police murder of an antifa activist outside of color of law in Portland back in 2020. Michael Reinoehl never got his day in court because the cops believed he wouldn’t let himself be taken alive. So he was, IMHO, murdered. Reinoehl should have gotten his day in court, and if he was proven guilty of murder, then let the chips fall where they may. The police are NOT judge, jury and executioner!

this nonsense:

Cases like this just don’t get national news. Here a man with “an extensive criminal history” started firing an “AR-15 style firearm” into a crowd. Fortunately, a woman who was legally carrying a gun was there to stop the attack.

Massie has been ranting about no gun zones, but this was not a no gun zone, the woman was “lawfully carrying a pistol shot”. The other guy had “an AR-15-style firearm”.

The WV incident has nothing to do with anything.

Our Friday night services conclude with the Mourner’s Kaddish. In accordance with tradition, the rabbi recites the names of those affiliated with the congregation who passed away over the past 11 months. Tonight he began the service by reciting the names of those murdered in Uvalde. We all hope that this time it will be different — that we will finally begin to confront this violence but it is depressing to think that the most likely outcome is that the NRA, with their tools in the government including the hacks on SCOTUS, will again succeed in demeaning these deaths — and stopping any meaningful actions to prevent future massacres.

If you will indulge me. I kept photographing the sunsets over Mt. Wilson for the past several days after posting a few here; chasing it’s position, atmospheric steadiness and clarity, and clouds. It all came together tonight! Here’s the best image from the last three.

Two nights ago. Clear bright Sun, this image is the best compromise between it and the foreground. Atmospheric steadiness is poor as can be seen by the waviness and fuzzy details of the normally straight towers.
One night ago. Here, the clouds were thick enough that the Sun was visible in only a few images. The clouds were right by the observatory, and sometimes went in front of it. Atmospheric clarity was better; it improved each night.
And here’s tonight. The sun was centered above the observatory with enough clouds to make a good compromise exposure possible. The air was steady enough that if you look closely, you can see several of the guy cables on the tall CBS tower. This is the one I was hoping for!

From what we hear about the weapon, they’d have to be far away to get a “grazing wound.” Also, the kids calling 911 kept asking someone to send the police. Which suggests that they weren’t there.

And I don’t know if that injury count includes the 11 YO girl whose story was told on CNN and who apparently got hit with shrapnel during the massacre. This is the girl who dipped her hands in the blood of one of her dead classmates and played dead.

The question for the Uvalde tragedy: were the police officers just incompetent or were they negligent because the victims were Hispanic?

5 hours ago, I call the IT support line for our hotel’s property management system because I noticed that there was an issue that needed to be resolved in order for our automated audit to run at 1:30am. I get told that they’ll resolve it and give me a call when it’s fixed.

5 hours later, I get a call back from the IT support line…to tell me that there’s an issue running the audit that needs to be resolved, the tone of the guy on the line making it sound as if he’s talking to a slow child. After I responded in a very clipped tone that I knew about the problem and called those yokels to fix it five hours ago, he responds in a tone somewhere between miffed and apologetic that he’ll give me a call back one the problem’s fixed.

Somewhat disagree, what is on display is more the result of what happens when a police department finds itself caught in a lie. Floyd’s death and the attempt at a cover-up is a good example, but I’d offer the shooting of Walter Scott in N. Charleston as a better example. Why? Because the video of Scott being shot in the back as he fled became public at the exact same time the police were holding a presser where they were describing it as a violent struggle that ended with Scott being shot in the chest by a cop fighting for his life.

How can you differentiate incompetence from cowardice when modern warrior cop training emphasizes that the policeman is first and foremost entitled to make life and death decisions because they are a better kind of person?

They’re not being trained to give up their lives for normal people, they’re being trained to kill people when they don’t feel safe.

When I lived in NM, one of my employees said he liked to wear a cowboy hat when he drove down the highway out of town, so the cops would think he was white. He said the Hispanic cops were as bad on that score as the Anglo cops.

Now he’s a little older, drives a huge truck instead of a little sports car, and some of the cops are guys he went to high school with. And he bought my bike shop. Doesn’t get pulled over any more.

“Workingman’s Dead” and “American Beauty” are good albums, but for me at least, that’s about it.

Also, “In Utero” was Nirvana’s magnum opus.

It’s always a grift.

Outgoing Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-NC) revealed Friday he sold upward of $250,000 of the Let’s Go Brandon meme cryptocurrency on Dec. 31, 2021, the day it saw its market value peak. Less than a month later, the meme coin had lost 100% of its value.

Multiple watchdogs told the Washington Examiner that the filing bolsters their suspicions that Cawthorn engaged in an insider trading scheme with the meme coin, whose leaders face a class-action lawsuit for allegedly scamming retail traders by orchestrating a “pump and dump” scheme with the coin.

Madison Cawthorn reaped profits with crypto ‘pump and dump’ scheme, filing shows (The shitty Washington Examiner)

“To Serve and Protect (Our Own Interests)”

We’ll most likely get a clearer understanding of the timeline of this incident in the near future. Now, I could be wrong, but as I currently understand it, the first officers arrived on the scene within a few minutes at a funeral home across the street from Robb Elementary that had called them after two of their employees had been shot at by the gunman.

Now at that point, the shooter was still outside and basically just randomly shooting at the school. So….why didn’t the police on the scene engage the gunman? If they had at least engaged him while they’re waiting for backup, this whole tragedy might have ended very differently. Instead it took them some 90 minutes to engage the shooter - and that was after 19 police officers and a tactical unit were on scene.

Ramos was pretty much just wandering around outside for 12 minutes before he made his way into the school. Imagine the brief newspaper blurb about this if the officers first on the scene had tried at all to stop him. Most of us wouldn’t know about this, and if we did, it would be little more than a weekend story about a “close call” that we would forget by Thursday of next week.

112
Dr Lizardo  May 28, 2022 • 1:19:13am

I guess the next time there’s an active shooter in a Texas school, the teachers could get a faster response by telling 911 they overheard another teacher reading “Heather Has Two Mommies” to her class.

Or maybe tell 911 that there’s a black guy on campus selling loose cigarettes. The cops would storm in there like the Omaha Beach scene in Saving Private Ryan.

What I love about that whole thing is most folks have heard about the basics and believe that the law passed was in response to the Black Panthers open-carrying while demonstrating. But the actual reason for the law being drafted was that the Panthers had begun organizing armed patrols of black neighborhoods in response to police violence and terrorism by the white population. The idea of black folks bringing an armed response to white terrorists apparently was scary enough that even CA Dems supported the law.

I didn’t actually hear that album completely until long after records by the Clash, The Jam, Patti Smith, Television & The Ramones so it didn’t impress me at all. The Clash’s first album on the other hand or the first punk I heard, “Rocket to Russia”? Those turned my world upside down :)

I first heard the Ramones on a late night AFN radio show out of Berlin in the early 80s and then didn’t meet another Ramones fan until 1984 at a Labor Festival of cavers in West Va.

Especially in Europe, punk seemed to be more about singles than full LPs.

I first heard Never Mind the Bollocks back in late 1977 (or maybe early 1978) when the album was still fresh. An elementary school friend of mine had an older brother in the military stationed in the UK and he brought the album home with him.

So, one day I was over at Albert’s (that was my friend’s name) and he was like, “You gotta hear this! It’s like nothing you’ll hear on the radio!” And Albert was right. The opening track, “Holidays in the Sun”…yeah, that blew away eight-year-old me.

I still sort of wonder what my high school Sociology class teacher thought when I opted to write a paper on the Black Panthers in 1980.*

This was a high school in a lily-white northern New York mill town. There was *one* black family in the town. The notable minority was the Native Americans since the town was next to the Mohawk reservation in that area. The racism was (at least to me) relatively below the radar since the usual targets were not there to hear people volubly talk about. The white ethnic group stuff was minor since the area had been settled by various groups over time and there were a lot of French speakers due to proximity to Quebec.

* - One option is that she ascribed it to being something my parents put me up to. Assuming she gave it a second thought at all.

One of the things I remember about that time was how, before they got played to death by corporate radio, Boston & “Rumors” both seemed as new and fresh to me as The Ramones, Patti Smith & The Clash. Fun times for music.

Later would come other things to shake things up; The Cars near perfect debut and Husker Du & The Replacements out of Minneapolis. I remember seeing a maxi single from some band from Dublin called U2 with tracks from “Boy” on it. I remember being impressed but doubting they come to anything much. ;)

Drilling isnt the same as facing reality. you know something’s coming. and that you’re going home when the practice session is over.

many who train for ‘disasters’, pilots, divers, the military, advanced car drivers, etc, still fail (and often panic themselves) when faced with the actual, in your face reality of a true spontaneous crisis situation.

they maybe didn’t know what specific guns he had. they could have guessed. no matter how much ‘training’, who’s really ready to face that? In a place like Uvalde.

these judges are deluded

A federal district court, in a 2-1 decision Friday, implemented Ohio state Senate and House district maps for the 2022 election that have twice been declared unconstitutional partisan gerrymanders by the Ohio Supreme Court</strong>.

Also in a 2-1 decision, in April, the judges representing the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio Eastern Division had set May 28 as the deadline for the commission to come up with a viable plan before the federal court would intervene to implement Map 3, which passed along partisan lines by Republicans on the commission in February and has been rejected twice by the state supreme court as unconstitutional. The court issued their ruling May 27 with it taking effect at midnight Saturday.

U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Amul R. Thapar and U.S. Western District of Kentucky Judge Benjamin J. Beaton, both appointed by former President Donald Trump, formed the majority. U.S. District Court Southern District of Ohio Chief Judge Algenon L. Marbley, who was appointed by former President Bill Clinton, opposed the decision.

The majority ruling said federal courts are instructed to give states maximal flexibility to craft their own solutions and that “federal district courts must wait to act until the last possible moment.”

“We must presume state actors will work together to reach homegrown solutions,” the majority wrote. “And if they fail, then it is up to the voters to punish them if they so choose.

apparently ‘Ohio Supreme Court” means nothing

and as a Rando points out: “You FUCKING IDIOTS, the whole POINT of rigging the maps is so that voters CANNOT “punish them if they so choose”.

They are not deluded. They are achieving their goal — minimizing Democratic votes and maximizing the power of the white supremacists they support. Modern Republican judges are all members of the neo-Nazi Federalist Society; the organization favors one party rule as long as the party is the GOP and minorities are silenced. Let’s not forget that lawyers from that organization collaborated with and inspired Trump in his efforts to overturn the election.

States matter only if they promote approved Federalist Society objectives: no abortion, guns everywhere, more power to religious institutions over secular rights, etc.

Infringe means limit in any way
I like to point out to my nra colleagues that profit infringes on my ability to afford choice of weapon by driving the cost up. There is no right to profit in the US Constitution so no profit should be allowed on sale of any gun any where at any level because of its conflict with my constitutional right

If it’s that sacred a right to keep and bear arms shouldn’t patents, and branding and other things that drive the price of arms up & keep the poorest amongst us from getting our rightful arms be disallowed too?

Same here. I’ve learned not to call Led Zeppelin a one hit wonder (Stairway to Heaven), even though that’s how I feel.

*please* IMMIGRANT SONG. When I was a teenager in the 1970s, it was a staple of the classic rock station I listened to and I HATED it with the heat of a billion suns. (I liked Stairway to Heaven.) I get much older, I actually listened to the words and appreciated the music better. Now my opinion has switched—I think Immigrant Song is much better than Stairway to Heaven. /again, Just My Personal Opinion, YMMV

It is a good song and perhaps it’s best use is in Thor: Ragnarok.
