Lyrics:
I’m caught here in my small square
You love me but we need some air
We’ll be ok, of that I’m pretty certain
If I stretch my arms we almost touch
I’ve never felt alone so much
Would you agree to pulling back the curtain

There will be days ahead
I’m pretty sure
Brightening lighter rays
In this world

Remember how we used to be
Connections that our friends could see
Remember when we tried to learn German
I told you what I learned today
That this all too shall pass away
It sounded like a stale, stale sermon

There will be days ahead
I’m pretty sure
Brightening lighter rays
In this world

There will be days ahead
I’m pretty sure
Brightening lighter rays
In this world

Really kinda sure

Wait and wait, when this is done
Days to come, anticipating days ahead

As time goes on I’ve come to see
How much these days have meant to me
I know my feelings aren’t always vocal
As we emerge unconfined
I’m pretty sure that you will find
My love for you is total

There will be days ahead
I’m pretty sure
Brightening lighter rays
In this world

There will be days ahead
I’m pretty sure
Brightening lighter rays
In this world

I’m pretty sure
There’ll be a day
When this is done
Oh, I’m really kinda sure

I’m pretty sure
For those who wait
That good things come
Oh, I’m really kinda, kinda pretty sure

There’ll be a day
Times await, times await
Good times await

Anticipating
Days ahead

That’s not a good reason not to do it. It’s preemptively defeating yourself.

The “self defense” argument needs to be put to bed forever because it’s clear the AR15 is the preferred tool for murderers. The number of examples of self defense situations is substantially outnumbered by the mass shootings. It’s not even close.

This is my choice for hog hunting:

Henry Steel Lever-Action .45-70

The AR-15 is inadequate and inhumane for hog hunting. Suburban slob hunters like Gaetz naturally prefer it. I have seen video of them blazing away, knocking chunks of flesh off the squealing, panic-stricken animals until the hogs finally bleed out and die. If I get good placement, the Henry will drop them dead in their tracks.

I have learned from my neighbors not to allow slob hunters onto my land. They are all too likely to shoot up vehicles, out-buildings, livestock and each other while the hogs escape scot-free.

re: #25 Shiplord Kirel: Fan of Big Bird, Bert, and Ernie

Very nice. I’ve always like lever actions.

There’s no need for an AR-15. If someone says, “But muh plinking!” a good old-fashioned .22 will do the job more than adequately.

Ruger 10/22 is an iconic plinker that costs a fraction of an AR15.

i know im in the minority on this

‘why’ someone wants a particular weapon is imo a pointless and politically loser argument.

saying nobody ‘needs’ one of X will never move the needle.
too many people will disagree, for whatever reason.

forget the iron
in this political environment, we will never ‘ban’ future sales of any specific weapon.
we will never reduce the number of X weapons that are already out there, voluntarily or by force.

a gun is either legal to buy, sell and possess, or it’s not.
if it’s legal, no one should have to justify why they want one, unless it’s legal and also somehow regulated

focus on bad behavior.

if you own, possess or even just handle a weapon, you must control it at all times.
if you dont, then face the consequences.

We managed to end the Tommy gun. No, we didn’t outright ban it. But we can basically make it impossible to possess one. Stop civilian sells of the ammo. Stop production, Require registration and transfer of ownership. Make it illegal for one to be out in public.

Going beyond even the GOP’s own platform, Republican Senate candidate J.D. Vance told a Catholic magazine last year that pornography should be banned because it’s stopping Americans from getting married and starting families.

“I think the combination of porn, abortion have basically created a lonely, isolated generation that isn’t getting married, they’re not having families, and they’re actually not even totally sure how to interact with each other,” Vance said in a newly unearthed interview with Crisis Magazine from August 2021.

The writer spoke with Vance at a gathering for young conservatives where Vance was a keynote speaker. She wrote that after asking him “his thoughts on porn and birth control and their effects on familial decline, Vance admitted he wants to outright ban pornography.”

Vance’s campaign didn’t provide a comment about his more recent thoughts on porn, and how they would factor into his priorities as a senator.

In 2016, the GOP, in its own official platform, declared porn “a public health crisis,” but stopped short of calling for it to be outlawed completely.

That’s pretty much my assumption as to why the Whitehouse is not jumping in yet.

They probably feel it is premature. And do not feel a desire to jump in and interfere with Murphy’s work. I do suspect that the Whitehouse is watching this issue very closely.

Despite the gqp’s desires, the current political system requires convincing people. (Or whatever of the electorate is left after suppression.)

So the Whitehouse is letting the Senate Democrats either succeed, in which case the Whitehouse will support their initiatives. Or that the Senate Democrats again fail to find any reasonable gqp senators. Which will become fodder for the midterms.

Watching their performance in a ‘real life’ situation, it seemed to me that the purpose of the Uvalde police was to protect the ruling class/elite and to keep the ‘little people’ in line.

That is the difference between a gang of thugs and a professional organization.

In war the thugs generally lose to the professionals.

Not to mention, it’s not even true. Tyrants love to say “Let the People have guns! It’s our right! And make sure those animals, those cockroaches, those vermin over there don’t get the rights that belong to the People.”

Just to cite everyone’s favorite example: The 1938 gun law in Nazi Germany relaxed most restrictions on firearm manufacture and ownership, exempting long guns, shotguns, and ammo from licensing and reporting requirements, extending permit renewals from one- to three-year intervals, lowering the minimum gun-owning age from 20 to 18, and expanding the allowable reasons for obtaining a handgun permit…

…as long as you weren’t Jewish. Or a Commie. Or queer. Or Roma. Etc. etc. etc..

84
Dangerman  May 29, 2022 • 1:10:49pm

we have somehow, perversely come to this point where people have all the benefits of keeping and bearing arms with no enforcement of their associated innate responsibility.

Let’s RECOGNIZE, actually RE-RECOGNIZE the responsibility that already comes with ownership. A responsibility that is ignored and unenforced.

That’s why “gun accountability”, not “gun control”.

Every right is coupled with inseparable responsibilities because the exercise of any right must be taken in context with how it impacts other people and other people’s rights. It is ludicrous to think otherwise.

Everyone - I mean EVERYONE - should want to turn 2A principles of personal responsibility into law. They would identify and cull out only the reckless and the nutters. And would have ZERO effect on responsible owners.

Anyone NOT willing to codify personal responsibility and consequences lies when they say they are a responsible gun owner. They fear losing their rights because they know they don’t control their weapons at all times and are careless.

Insisting on your rights without acknowledging your responsibilities isn’t freedom, it’s juvenile. This is what should be laid bare; they should be made to say it.

Maybe then, the rest of us will finally see the light; the actual fight we’re facing.

Another news item from DC.

Looks like DC is planning on raising the registration fees for large SUV/trucks. Interestingly, the weight limit for electric vehicles would be raised to include 1000lbs for the weight of the batteries.

A City Fights Back Against Heavyweight Cars

Oversized pickups and SUVs are exacting a deadly toll on urban streets. Here’s how one US city plans to push back.

*snip*

Such oversized vehicles exacerbate problems across all kinds of communities, but none more so than dense urban neighborhoods full of pedestrians and cyclists. Driving a large pickup or SUV increases the likelihood you’ll kill or injure someone; its thirsty power plant (the F-250 gets 15 mpg) spews more air pollution and greenhouse emissions.

If you’re a city or state leader, you have a limited arsenal of tools available to discourage residents from operating these behemoths on local streets. A proposal from the District of Columbia would add a new one: The city is poised to require owners of vehicles weighing over 6,000 pounds to pay an annual $500 vehicle registration fee], almost seven times the cost to register a modest sedan. No other US jurisdiction has created such a forceful financial disincentive against the biggest, heaviest car models.

*snip*

Unless, of course, the car buyer opts for an electric vehicle that needs no gas at all. Numerous EVs, including the 9,000-pound GMC Hummer EV, already crack the three-ton mark. Cheh has proposed that electric vehicles, whose batteries often add weight compared to an equivalent gas-powered model, be subject to the same sliding scale of registration fees — but with a 1,000-pound credit intended avoid standing in the way of electrification.

*snip*

This is my choice for hog hunting:

[Embedded content]

Henry Steel Lever-Action .45-70The AR-15 is inadequate and inhumane for hog hunting.

Question for the hunters here (hogs, deer, ducks, anything)…

Do you butcher your kills to fill the extra freezer you keep in the garage? Or do you take the carcass to a professional butcher and let him turn it into a couple of cardboard boxes full of meal-sized packages wrapped in butcher paper?

Back when I was hunting you had to be very particular about who you used to butcher your game. A lot of hunters who brought their game in to be butchered had not been very careful with the carcass. How long it had been dead, how it had been handled.

In my humble experience, ‘gamey taste’ has a lot to do with how the meat was handled. Although, yes, during breeding season, some breeding male meat reflects the hormonal and physical stress on the animal. But few hunters are that selective of what animal and in what health they shoot.

One guy I knew had a family tradition of dipping the carcass in any local creek to wash it off. With no idea how clean that stream was… or wasn’t.

A lot of the guys who butchered for a fee, wouldn’t clean off their equipment between different folks’ game. And some were fine with mixing meat from different carcasses as long as the weight returned to each hunter was correct.

I am told that the Marlin Guide Gun is a popular 45-70 for the Alaska Bush. But I suspect that one should plan on a lot of recoil.

What I personally would not choose, for anything, would be a 12 gauge shotgun without a stock.

As for hunting wild hogs. From the videos I have seen, (not done it myself, although some folks I know used to go to Tennessee and do a fenced hunt) the most effective way looks like trapping the herd at a feeding station and then putting them down.

Running around and chasing dozens of wild piglets doesn’t sound a very productive use of time or energy to me. Although it appears to make good tv drama. Nor does sitting in a blind in the hot Texas sun for hours.

As you point out, there are some real idiots in this world.

There is an article online about a group of American hunters who went to Canada and hunted bear. They shot one, then cooked and ate it. And all came down with trichinosis.

Trump’s New Focus for Attacks Is Transgender People
politicalwire.com

Playbook: “Trump is like a standup comedian. He uses rallies, especially in the offseason, to work on material. He tests the reaction among his diehard fans and watches the mainstream media’s coverage. He then rewrites the lines, calibrating them for maximum effect inside the arena and minimal blowback outside of it. You can tell he believes he’s onto something with his mocking of trans people.”

“There is a cynical strategy at work here. Targeting marginalized groups for ridicule forces more responsible actors to stand up for them. As Democrats have learned, Trump’s goal is to get them to spend their time outraged and defending the targets of his attacks rather than talking about their own message.”

“This dynamic creates a built-in political advantage to any party that no longer sees it as taboo to scapegoat certain groups. Trump, of course, knows this and he has found a new target for 2022 — and perhaps beyond.”

My grandmother was from Lookout Mt. on the Georgia side, which is in that district. Her dad—one of my great-grandfathers—was a country doctor there who literally took things like chickens as payment for services rendered. This would have been late 19th to early 20th centuries.

‘Liberty Alliance’ has launched a ‘Woke Interactive Map’ to warn MAGA about instances of woke behavior in a particular community. The site will alert people if either: 1. CRT, 2. Woke Extremism, or 3. ‘Action by a Crazy Leftist’ has taken place.

Now how the hell do I get Opp AL on the map? Two Egg FL would be cooler, but there’s nothing there.

Never been to Two Egg, but I have been through Opp, en route to/from PCB.

Scams in Crypto and the people who hunt them. Wash Post

To Molly White, the project wasn’t just cringeworthy bluster, it was promotional material for yet another potential scam — one that was targeting the money of real people. Digging into Cryptoland’s organizing documents, she found a business plan full of contradictions and other red flags, like an address in the Seychelles islands, a tax haven which has hosted previous high-profile crypto scams.

It’s a racket:

‘Pickleball Is the Wild, Wild West’: Inside the Fight Over the Fastest-Growing Sport in America
There are: Too many leagues. Too many federations. Battling billionaires. Bad behavior. And the growth of a booming sport is on the line.

John Walters
May 24, 2022

In February 2021 an unholy tremor shook the seemingly carefree sport of pickleball: news that a second hall of fame was in the planning stages. The announcement, from USA Pickleball (heretofore USAP), incited a bevy of questions, such as: Wait, there’s a pickleball hall of fame? (Believe it or not.) Is anyone famous solely for playing pickleball? (Not yet.) Why stop at two? (Actually …)

dinkheads.com, the preeminent pickleball blog, referred to USAP’s intent to erect a rival Hall as a “douche-y” move, but it’s far more serious than that. The Hall is just one parry in a series of turf wars and satellite skirmishes plaguing the fastest growing sport in America—a sport whose ambitions extend from occupying real estate at your nearest park to reaching the Olympics. To wit:

There exist two international—feuding—governing bodies: the relatively venerable International Federation of Pickleball (IFP) and the renegade World Pickleball Federation (WPF).
And two domestic professional tours: the Association of Pickleball Professionals (APP) and its mirror-acronym rival, the Professional Pickleball Association (PPA).
Meanwhile, a pair of competing Texas-based billionaires seem poised to go to the mattresses over the sport.
All of this against a backdrop of well-founded angst among the tennis set that pickleball is usurping both its real estate and its participants…..

Interesting. I can see how one might guess the correct word knowing the final letter as there a very few words ending with that letter and most of them are unlikely to be part of the list of words they use. What is interesting to me is your choice of your first word. Is that your usual starting word?

Question for the hunters here (hogs, deer, ducks, anything)…

Do you butcher your kills to fill the extra freezer you keep in the garage? Or do you take the carcass to a professional butcher and let him turn it into a couple of cardboard boxes full of meal-sized packages wrapped in butcher paper?

I’ve had butchering done by a friend and also a processor.* The former one time was slow to process the three deer that needed to be butchered and it was warmer than expected. Led to me losing half the meat on my deer due to spoilage. The latter was used to handling a lot of deer, had an additional large freezer for deer season and did a very good job. (I worked out that processed deer was about $4/lb and I got steaks and ground venison out of it.) And word gets around on who the good processors are.

* - Many processors in PA are also professional butchers. But they can’t use their equipment used for usual business to also process deer due to health codes. So they usually have an extra set of equipment dedicated to just doing that.

re: #122 Barefoot Grin

Should have explained. I think it’s in the same vein as “we’re all trying to find the guy who did this” in a hot dog costume who crashed his hot dog car into a storefront.

There is also meme stuff of posting a photo labeled with nothing but incorrect information. Some people are quite insulted by them.
