re: #237 Hecuba’s daughter

Christie was knowledgeable, competent, not boring, and a total jerk. But he would have handled Covid before it became a pandemic and there may have been few deaths worldwide under his administration.

Edited — accidentally posted before I typed my message.

Christie was basically trying for the position in the pack that Trump ultimately took of “the bully who gets shit done.” That he was a “dealmaker” with a track record of getting Dems to agree to follow him on various laws and initiatives. And that the folks of his state were (at worst) of the “he might be a bastard, but he’s our bastard” mentality.

SMOTI apparently thinks the FBI is as obvious as portrayed on the Simpsons:

Of note, this van shows up to immediately replace a previous one Marge becomes suspicious of. The first van is marked “Two Guys from Quantico Pizza”.

They did a similar joke years later where the van said:

Both Trump and Christie are bullies; but Christie had real government experience, was not in it for accumulating wealth, and was not a traitor, at least not then. (Actually, I don’t think any of the other GOP candidates that year were traitors loyal to Putin, though Lindsey would likely be a blackmail target.)

From last thread:

re: #177 Teddy’s Person

When I lived in DC and worked for the government, carpooling was huge. I don’t know how the system got set up. There were places in the burbs where you could pick up a carpool and specific places in DC where these carpools got dropped off. Most people carpooled in organized carpools. If you missed your carpool or is wasn’t running on a specific day, you could go to a designated pick up spot and get a ride into DC.

I remember talking to a co-worker who carpooled from VA south of DC. Her carpool wasn’t running one day so she went to the Springfield Mall and found a carpool that needed a rider who would drop off near our office.

This was all well organized in the early-mid 1990s. I suspect they use existing social media these days.

My new favorite recipe name:

Ants on a tree (蚂蚁上树)

Some time ago I ended up on a recipe mailing list. Since my favorite cooking implement is the microwave, (or the phone to the local pizza delivery place) I am not sure how this happened.

But the mailing list seems to pride itself on finding interesting recipe names. So this one appeared on that list. But this one is apparently a traditional recipe and name.

Who knows, maybe some day I will actually try it.

Following from my post in the previous thread:

To quote the Wesley Lowery interview Froomkin talks about:

[T]he mainstream has allowed what it considers objective truth to be decided almost exclusively by white reporters and their mostly white bosses. And those selective truths have been calibrated to avoid offending the sensibilities of white readers.

So when reality has a well-known liberal bias, one must reject reality to remain ‘nonpartisan’. Oh, and calling this shit out is hurting journalism because reporters’ fee fees are hurt on Twitter. You know, the thing that was supposed to replace the public editor’s function way back when?

Talking to the beaver might have been a very good idea. There have been several attacks locally in the past decade or so. Most have been attributed to rabies.

Harris reacted to the news on Instagram, sharing his excitement to be involved in the show. He wrote: “My current gig. Never looked more dashing. Thank you for inviting me into your Whoniverse, @russelltdavies63. I’ll try my hardest to do my worst. This Doctor has no idea what’s in store. And even if he does… Who cares? Ha ha ha HA ha-ha-ha!”

While his character has yet to be officially confirmed, some fans have been speculating he could be playing the Celestial Toymaker, based on his outfit. The villain first appeared as a foe to the First Doctor in the 1960s and has made several appearances in varying forms since.

story about the skulls when they were found:

8,000-year-old heads on spikes found in Swedish lake
Stone Age people built an artificial island of rock, bones, and wood.

This sentence shows a faulty default assumption, in the way it’s worded, or perhaps that’s just going along:

Scientists working on the site have sequenced the DNA for several of the individuals—that’s how they figured out that two of the crania were female.

I read it as the DNA sequencing results lacked any paternal haploids, which would indicate the skulls were female.

The presumption is that no Y chromosome means female. Which is true in almost all cases, though in modern times we know that in rare cases phenotypes may be different than genotypes.

It may sound like a lot… because TFG was so bad.

But substantive change is not about paper claims.

In reality, global CO2 emissions just keep on chugging along.

And US carbon output will only go down as we replace coal electricity-generation with renewables, and replace the internal combustion engine with electric motors.

From the EPA, thirty years of greenhouse gas emissions:

Note that transportation emissions have increased over that time, even with all the electric vehicles. And the 2020 downturn is from the pandemic. Once 2022 data is in the data will certainly show an increase in transportation emissions again.

The only progress has been in electrical generation and industrial emissions.

Evidence that Federalist Society judges appointed in recent years are becoming increasingly hostile to democracy and probably election deniers. This is a disgrace. If a Republican becomes President in the near future, our judicial system will be full on run by Nazis

I think the most technically feasible and politically unfeasible way to have an immediate reduction in transportation emissions is a decrease in human transportation. Exceptions for human-powered vehicles and trains.

re: #57 Hecuba’s daughter

Companies often have very loose practices when it comes to distributing sensitive information. Consultants would create Excel workbooks with SS#, birth dates, names, addresses — and then send it to others outside their team to help resolve Excel issues they encountered. When I retired, my company laptop had hundreds of such workbooks — heaven knows where the information ended up.

I guess they weren’t getting the weekly reminders of the rules imposed by the GPDR like I do.
