I think the most technically feasible and politically unfeasible way to have an immediate reduction in transportation emissions is a decrease in human transportation. Exceptions for human-powered vehicles and trains.

Like their guns, Americans will not give up their cars.

Which is why we need charging stations as ubiquitous as gas stations, and charging as cheap or cheaper than filling up. And of course continue increasing the percentage of our energy generated from renewables. EV are dirty if the electricity charging them is generated from fossil fuel plants.

U.S. Capitol Police Officer Aquilino Gonell dismissed the idea that Jan. 6, 2021 — the day a mob of pro-Trump supporters stormed the Capitol to stop Congress from certifying the 2020 election — was a tour, as some lawmakers had suggested.

During an appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” Gonell was asked what he would tell people who were skeptical about the magnitude of the attack.

“Well, those people, they never had talked to me about it. They never had like a minute or so, so I could tell them or show them my injuries. I could assure you that that was not a tour,” the police sergeant said. “And those people — that whoever assaulted me and my fellow officers, they should be in jail, not just — [they] were not the good guys during that day.”

Gonell said he was disappointed in lawmakers who said they were pro-law enforcement but instead sided with the rioters.

“It disappointed me that, like I was saying earlier, that instead of — they fill their mouth with ‘We back the blue’ or we are pro-law and order and the rule of law, and then they get a chance to hold these people accountable,” he said.

“And yet they’re fighting for the Jan. 6 rioters and calling them patriots or political prisoners, but yet to them I think we are considered the bad guys of Jan. 6 because we stopped them from doing whatever they intended to do.”

So, one may ask, if so many electric cars have been sold how is it that transportation emissions are going up?

Good question, but if you look at the graph (downstairs), housing emissions are up too.

More houses, bigger houses, more energy use.

More houses built in exurban areas means long commutes to town.

Population growth in the US has also meant increased emissions. Per capita emissions since 1990 are down because so many more people while electricity generation has reduced their total emissions.

It’s not looking good on the climate change front.

Should we give up?

No, since Miocene-level CO2 would be much worse than Pliocene-level CO2.

The House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol has postponed its Wednesday hearing slated to review former President Trump’s efforts to pressure the Justice Department to investigate his unfounded claims of election fraud.

In an advisory, the committee said its scheduled hearing on Thursday would still take place but provided no other details.

I’m pretty sure that most people will buy big houses and terrible vehicles as long as they have the money to do so. This may not be fixable because if people find themselves with less purchasing power, they’ll vote for Republicans.

We need a lot more reporting like this:

“Roger Stone and Michael Flynn under fire over rallies ‘distorting Christianity’”

….Amanda Tyler, the executive director of the Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty, which has organized Christians against Christian nationalism, said: “Christian nationalism is a threat to the church because those peddling it wrap this ideology in biblical language and imagery. Christian nationalism is wrong as a matter of Christian ethics. The Bible is not confined to a nation much less a party or list of policy positions.”

She added: “The ReAwaken America tour is a gross distortion of Christianity and it’s up to Christian leaders in the areas the tour visits to speak out against this ideology.”

The ReAwaken tour’s pro-Trump political messages mixed with Christian nationalism was on display at a two-day gathering in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, in May that drew Flynn, Stone, Eric Trump and the rightwing pastor Mark Burns, who is running for a House seat in the state.

Stone revved up the crowd with at times bizarre conspiratorial claims. “There is a satanic portal above the White House, you can see day and night. It exists. It is real. And it must be closed. And it will be closed by prayer,” he said.

The “portal”, Stone told a rapt crowd, first appeared after Joe Biden “became president and it will be closed before he leaves”. Stone, a longtime Trump confidant, was convicted on three counts including obstruction during the Russia meddling investigations, but he was pardoned in late 2020 by Trump, who had earlier commuted his sentence….

I think we’ll know for certain if the Russians suddenly bugger off back to Russia without warning. Unless the chosen successor is as fanatically devoted to the idea of conquering the old Soviet territories as our Dear Leader, I have little doubt that the majority of people “in the know” would just as soon turn those armies around and figure out a convenient cover story.

i dont like that they keep saying “tried to overturn”

i know that’s the accepted vernacular now and everyone knows what everyone means.

still:

say the initial finding (biden won) was wrong or incomplete or in some way inexact. or merely legitimately challenged.
then a fair and legitimate recount would prove that the original count was in error.
then if so, then there is no ‘overturn’ since congress hadn’t done it’s dance yet.
there is nothing *to* ‘overturn’.
it’s counting, it’s mathematics, the result is the result when everything is fairly and fully counted.
and they lost every one of those recounts. the automatic ones, the audit ones, the triggered ones. all of them.

No.

What they were trying to do was influence people to illegally manipulate the outcome to ‘certify’ a result *different* than what the actual counts reflected. that’s not ‘overturning’. that’s lying, cheating, fraud, etc.

So maybe it’s too many words.

also there’s the issue that if they got away with the *process* of that bogus certification, that would have been the end of it. as if everyone in the nation goes, ‘ok’ and moves on.

i guess i’ll live with the language

Denmark and Canada end 49-year-old feud over Arctic isle

[…]

Under the agreement, a border will be drawn across the 1.3-square-km Hans Island in the waterway between the northwestern coast of the semi-autonomous Danish territory of Greenland and Canada’s Ellesmere Island. The rock has no known mineral reserves of value.

“It sends a clear signal that it is possible to resolve border disputes … in a pragmatic and peaceful way, where the all parties become winners,” said Danish Foreign Minister Jeppe Kofod. […]

Something tells me that if that rock was loaded with valuable minerals things would not have been as easy as the Danish minister pretends.

The P365 also had that problem.

SIG isn’t worried though, they’ve got the M17 & M18 contract for the new Army pistols. Based, of course, on the same P320 in the lawsuit. The Army wanted SIG though and cooked the trials to ensure they won. Wonder how much it’ll cost the US to get them fixed?

Should. Won’t. This is at least the third major lawsuit against SIG for this garbage pistol that they’re cranking out for the military and dozens of PD’s nationwide. Profits are far more important than people.

Herschel Walker Has a Secret Son
“Herschel Walker (R), the Republican nominee for Senate from Georgia, who has often spoken out against absentee fathers, particularly in Black households, on Tuesday publicly acknowledged having fathered a second son with whom he is not in contact,” the New York Times reports.

“The development is the latest and potentially the most damaging of a number of reports detailing Mr. Walker’s exaggerations and outright falsehoods concerning his life before entering politics.”

Those still exist in some places. When I drive the I-94/I-39 route from Minneapolis to central Illinois, at which point I transfer to smaller highways to guide me the rest of the way back to fish country, there are several places where I am informed that there are no rest areas or other services for X number of miles.

Try driving from Vegas to Yosemite. There are 50+ mile stretches without gas stations.

Adam Laxalt wins the Republican Senate primary in Nevada, setting up a high-stakes November fight.

The NYT seems to think that Laxalt, a Trumper hardcore deep into the usual idiocy, will flip the NV Senate seat from the Democrats.

If that happens then the Democrats are in real trouble.

I still don’t know what to conclude from all this lingering Trumpism. America has had some pretty idiotic political movements in the past and we’ve survived. I don’t know how terminal Trumpism is to this country.

This is not meant to be as snarky as it looks. I think about this stuff.

Is a vegetarian cyclist more carbon neutral than a meat eating one?

It also depends on how we produce our meat. Factory Farming is the big ecological burden, not just raising animals. But as long as we stress quantity over quality, we will be concerned with turning out masses of low-grade, ecologically unfriendly meat products (and paying illegal immigrants to process and package them)

Oh, I don’t disagree, but I do envy your 10-15% humidity and 70 degree mornings. Given how this summer is starting, we probably won’t see 70 degrees until September unless we get a day where it rains like hell.

Kinda.

People have forgotten how slow the horse world was. Cavalry could do “40 miles a day on beans and hay” but farmer Jones’ horse drawn wagon? Between 20 ~ 30 miles depending on load and terrain. Depending on how far out your farm was, town was a day or a week trip away. You lived and died by what you had to hand. The train is the only reason the great plains were even slightly habitable.

A little explainer if things get confusing: NATO as an organization doesn’t have heavy weapons; NATO the organization has some common funded radios and a couple of AWACS aircraft and things like that. NATO countries have heavy weapons.

NATO the organization is a talk shop and common staff, where the NATO nations can discuss and agree (or not), but a NATO (political) decision cannot force a NATO nation to do anything. It’s not like the EU and its various levels of competences. Stoltenberg as SecGen speaks for the common view of the NATO nations, and not as some sort of uber-general, so can sound rather stilted and repetitive sometimes as he has to stay on agreed topics.

So, he speaks for the common view of the NATO nations when he says this, but this statement can’t force the nations that agreed to the statement to do it; it’s up to their governments.

Good news for those suffering from alopecia:

The Food and Drug Administration on Monday approved a drug to treat severe alopecia, which causes baldness in more than 300,000 Americans every year.

The approval of Olumiant (baricitinib) was notable because it is the first drug approved by the government that treats the entire body for the autoimmune disorder instead of a specific location, the FDA said in a Tuesday press release.

“Access to safe and effective treatment options is crucial for the significant number of Americans affected by severe alopecia,” said Kendall Marcus, M.D., director of the Division of Dermatology and Dentistry in the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.

“Today’s approval will help fulfill a significant unmet need for patients with severe alopecia areata.”

Alopecia patients lose clumps of hair when their immune system attacks their own hair follicles. Olumiant blocks the activity of a family of enzymes that inflames the attack, the FDA said.

snip

“Olumiant is also approved for the treatment of COVID-19 in certain hospitalized adults,” the release said.

This is how Republicans are going to steal or sabotage the 2024 Election.

yahoo.com

Refusing to certify local elections across the country will be the method used to cause enough chaos and uncertainty to permit state legislatures and AGs to commit fraud openly and send their own hand-picked Republican electors.

There is a clear signal of intent amongst Republicans and this case the first taste of what is to come soon in a national election. The disproven election fraud claims don’t matter to them. They do not operate in the same world as 99% of the planet. They operate in their own little universe where they must win 100% of everything, all the political power, all the cultural and social control, all the money.

What a post-democracy America eventually looks like I really can’t say, but we’ve been teetering on the edge for awhile now. But it will be smart to prepare now to live in a country with huge swaths of territory full of utterly corrupt Christian Nationalist fiefdoms.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - A very smart, brave, and innocent 15-year-old is recovering after a horrific experience last Friday.

Gianna Vitarelli and her girlfriend were leaving Valley Fair Mall in Santa Clara when suddenly something happened.

“Me and her heard a really loud ‘thwack’ noise and I immediately said ‘Ow!’” Gianna recalled.

It turns out she was hit by a drive-by pellet gun projectile, a situation the Santa Clara police are now investigating.

“We turned around to see what that was, and we just see a car driving off, rolling up its window,” the teen said.

After blood started flowing from the wound, paramedics thought it was a relatively minor piercing of her skin. But, as her condition worsened, and her breathing was labored, doctors found out it was much worse.

“My wife took her to urgent care and they had done an X-ray and that’s where they found the pellet,” said her father, Mike Vitarelli.

The pellet had done its damage.

“It had collapsed my lung, fractured a rib, it caused a lot of internal bleeding and then it almost hit my heart,” said Gianna.

13,021 pounds of fentanyl have been intercepted at our southern border since Biden took office. There’s even more that hasn’t been accounted for.

It’s a rule of thumb that Law Enforcement intercepts no more than 10% of what is being shipped, so that would indicate that there are over 100K pounds that got through.

As I mentioned, I need to do a deep dive. I didn’t follow her closely since she was south of me, in the 12th.

My impression is that the “squad” felt free to vote against infrastructure was because they knew it was going to pass. I may be wrong on that but I thought it was a protest vote because they were concerned (rightly so) that Manchin was going to bail on the BBB proposal.

Back when I worked for the airlines, I was flying home with a few pilots after a convention in DFW. We had a guy at the gate, shirtless, with a dressed but filthy child. As we still had a ton of swag, we gave the guy a free t-shirt, which he readily accepted. But he didn’t put it on. To avoid a rukus, they let him board with his carryon, and just before the pushback of the plane, the FA asked over the PA for him to come up to the front of the plane. He came up with his bag, the ground agent asked him to step off the plane for a moment to check his ticket, once he did….bam!, the airplane door closed and we pushed back.

Why is the current British government so fucking stupid.

The European Commission won’t rule out suspending the EU-UK trade deal if the UK approves a draft bill that unilaterally overrides parts of the Brexit agreement.

Šefčovič’s stark warning comes two days after Downing Street unveiled a draft bill to revoke certain elements of the Northern Ireland Protocol, the tailored-made regime that currently enables the trade of goods between Northern Ireland, which is part of the UK, and the Republic of Ireland, an EU member state.

Northern Ireland follows EU customs rules, remains part of the Single Market for goods and applies EU law on VAT in order to avoid border checks between the two sides.

This is the result. This is the end result of ‘both sides same thing’. You give credence to the assholes that reality doesn’t support so ‘conventional wisdom’ can support them instead. And it’s not an accident of naivete, this is a result Kahn and others are explicitly reaching for.

In observance of Juneteeth — the day marking the 1865 freeing of enslaved people in Texas — 343 Industries released a new nameplate customization palette for the game. The nameplate sports the colors green, black, and red, and was meant to show the company’s support for the nationally recognized holiday and its historical importance. However, fans were shocked and appalled to discover that the nameplate palette had been named “Bonobo” — the name of a great ape.

The “Bonobo” title was immediately decried as racist by a number of fans, who demanded 343 change it out immediately and be held accountable for the mistake. Some players even threatened to boycott the game until the fix could be made. One of the more high-profile responses came from OpTic “Halo” pro player aPG, who expressed his disgust with the palette name and his reluctance to continue supporting the company through his esports career.

343 quickly responded to fans and made a few changes in rapid succession, but the question still remains: How did this happen? And what did 343 Industries have to say about it in the aftermath?
