WAITIN’ FOR YOU TO BLOW
(Bonnie Raitt)

I keep her anger cocked and ready,
Tucked in her stylin’ holster
Draw the line in pretty colors,
Just to dare some fool to cross her
I keep her righteousness on simmer,
though it’s tastier on a boil
And her tongue stays nice’n sharp
—the tighter she stays coiled

I love to let her lay around
Blowin’ deadlines once again
Stock her up with lame excuses
For things she meant to send
I make her blow her diet,
‘Til she slips to full-on binge
Then I up her shame about it
Cause she looks so cute unhinged

I got her where she is today,
But do I get respect?
She claims she’s so above it now,
Keeps all that mess in check
Recovery’s a fickle beast,
Better stick to what you know,
Cause I’m always ridin’ shotgun, baby,
Just waitin’ for you to you blow

Don’t matter how much time you got,
It’s still a slippery ledge
Gotta keep an eye on every step
When there’s no more bets to hedge
You can whine or boast, cut ‘n run,
You can fall down on your knees
But if it ain’t the full surrender, baby
It’s all the same to me

It’s funny how a little doubt’ll muddle up her way
It only takes some darker thoughts to wreck her sunny day
I let her draw love close enough
To see she really cares
But no way do they get inside
In case there’s no one there

“Goddamn you, Joe Biden!” is my standard ironic comment whenever the price of anything goes up at the grocery store or supplies of my preferred brand dry up or even if they simply move the same product to a different shelf.

None of my fave restaurants have raised their prices; they’ve just done things like… the garlic shrimp at one place used to have 6 shrimp, now it’s got 4. The fish ‘n chips at another used to come with a thing of minted peas, it doesn’t anymore. The peaches ‘n blueberry pancakes now has one less pancake in the stack, and one less strip of bacon….

So Axios is running a story about Gallup’s religious poll (and Gallup has been doing this for a long time.)

Twitter runs with the Axios story instead of promoting the actual Gallup News story.

Anyway, the interesting thing about this Gallup story is that it is placed in the politics section.

Is Gallup trying to tell us something?

Belief in God in U.S. Dips to 81%, a New Low

Belief in God has fallen the most in recent years among young adults and people on the left of the political spectrum (liberals and Democrats). These groups show drops of 10 or more percentage points comparing the 2022 figures to an average of the 2013-2017 polls.

Most other key subgroups have experienced at least a modest decline, although conservatives and married adults have had essentially no change.

The groups with the largest declines are also the groups that are currently least likely to believe in God, including liberals (62%), young adults (68%) and Democrats (72%). Belief in God is highest among political conservatives (94%) and Republicans (92%), reflecting that religiosity is a major determinant of political divisions in the U.S.

Thanks for the heads up!

Tysons Corner Mall, aka “Tysons 1”, is a large regional mall in a Virginia satellite city of DC. It is located at the intersection of Va Rt 7 and Va Rt 123, just East of Vienna, Virginia. Across Va Rt 123 is another large regional mall called, with great originality “Tysons 2”.

As of 10 minutes ago twitter posts still have gunfire in them.

Back in the 1950s what is now called Tysons Corner was a rural family farm at the intersection of two rural Virginia roads. When the DC ring road aka “The Beltway” was designed, the owner of the farm decided to cash in. He developed the family farm and then bought up and started developing the surrounding area. 60 years later, the area is heavily developed and one of the largest DC Satellite cities.

Tysons Corner is now a major employment hub on its own. And has the traffic jams to prove it.

The “Tysons 2” was designed in the 1980s and 1990’s around a Ritz Carlton Hotel and contained a lot of very high-end stores. It was basically designed so that wealthy diplomats and government officials could bring their families to DC. While the husband (at least in those days) went off to negotiate with US officials, the families would stay in the hotel and, when bored, could go downstairs and shop for luxury goods in the Mall.

Yup, that’s what happens when you have random guys running around with guns at the scene of an active shooter. Particularly when they are taking pot shots at other people who are shooting back.

I believe that about 15 years ago in a Richmond suburb, an off duty Sheriff’s Deputy tried to respond to an active shooter and got shot and killed.

The usual response tends towards:
“Caedite eos. Novit enim Dominus qui sunt eius.”

Saw that gas is down 24 cents a gallon at Sam’s Club. Massive line. I have it delivered to the farm and have been letting it run down in the hope that I can last until a reduction. Looks like I might make it. I expect another big gouge over Independence day holiday though.

The voices in your head are calling
Stop wasting your time, there’s nothing coming
Only a fool would think someone could save you
The men at the factory are old and cunning
You don’t owe nothing, so boy, get running
It’s the best years of your life they want to steal
But you grow up and you calm down
And you’re working for the clampdown
You start wearing the blue and brown
And you’re working for the clampdown
So you got someone to boss around
It makes you feel big now
You drift until you brutalize
Doesn’t make you first kill now
In these days of evil presidentes
Working for the clampdown
But lately one or two has fully paid their due
For working for the clampdown

Ah….one of my departed mother’s favorite meals. Ritual at my aunt Bernie’s whenever they butchered chickens. My mother really like lots of stuff that made me adolescent head spin but she won me over on chicken hearts (and chicken feet too). Never convinced me on gizzards, pig’s knuckles, chicken necks, head cheese and a number of other delicacies she loved though.

Bow-tie Goebbels said that? Crenshaw could beat the shit out of him without raising his heart rate, with 6 or 8 Proud Boys thrown in for the appearance of fairness. I don’t approve of political violence but Repugs do so let them have it as long as they keep it among themselves.

I prefer bowtie Duranty, actually. Keeps another name that should live in infamy alive.

Military stealth planes, when operating near civilian aircraft or along sensitive borders where they do not want to cause tension, (by making the opposing side worry that there might be military stealth planes on hostile missions) will have radar reflecting lenses to make them more visible to other radars.

NATO aircraft along the Russian border appear to have removed those radar reflecting lenses for at least some missions.

It’s the carney business.

Just like WWE. Vince McMahon got attention this week for one of his sex-for-employment schemes, so he decides to temporarily step down as CEO.

And who becomes the new CEO? His daughter Stephanie, who left her job at WWE in May “to take care of family”. Now she’s the CEO and Chairman of the board.

AS IF she’s not just Vince’s puppet.

Trump Paid $12.6 Million to January 6 Rally Organizers
politicalwire.com

“Former President Donald Trump’s political operation and Republican Party committees have paid over $12.6 million to individuals and firms that organized the Jan. 6, 2021, rally that preceded the deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol since the start of the 2020 election,” OpenSecrets reports.

“The full extent of the payments from the Trump campaign political operations to rally organizers during the 2020 election and around the rally in early 2021 remains a mystery because the campaign’s top vendor was American Made Media Consultants LLC, a firm created by Trump campaign aides to act as a clearinghouse for its spending.”

“Trump’s campaign and joint fundraising committee routed more than $771 million through the firm, hiding details of those payments.”

I remember when a friend came to visit me when I was teaching high school in the county schools just outside West Lafayette and Lafayette, IN in the early ’90s and I took him to a new bar in West Lafayette called The Neon Cactus. We got a beer and watched the line dancing and said to each other, “this is kind of a fascist training ground with sexy waitresses”* and skedaddled to the hip old bar with the old 19th century heavy oak bar.

*My memory is fading, but it’s possible we just said, “what the fuck is this shit?”

one miscellaneous irritation: streaming services break songs into discrete units, even when they aren’t on an album. So for instance, Moody Blues, which often like to have one song blend into the next, have irritating, very noticeable pauses between tracks that are clearly not supposed to be there because music gets broken onto either side of the break.

“…During the questioning of Heritage Classical Academy, state education board member Georgina Pérez, a Democrat from El Paso, also read a Facebook comment of the school’s board secretary, Kathryn van der Pol. She posted a comment five years ago about the Washington’s Women’s March that said the organizers wanted to impose Sharia, Islamic law, on the United States.

“Why would this person with these beliefs be your choice for school leadership?” Pérez asked.

Saunders told the board that van der Pol told him the comment was being taken out of context and she was actually quoting someone else. Board member Ruben Cortez Jr., a Democrat from Brownsville, said he was not buying it.

“Clearly you want to defend your member and that’s okay, I understand, but that’s very telling to me,” Cortez said on Wednesday. “You guys have been here … every time you’ve had an opportunity to fix anything that could have seemed just out of bounds for some of us, each time you all come back and it just seems like you’d dig a deeper hole.”

I’ve used toe baskets, but I never used hard shoe-clips, for exactly this reason. If you need to get your leg out from under the bike NOW, you won’t meet Major Road Rash, you’ll meet General Road Rash.

And when your pants make noise at the end of the day when you take them off, so will you. Usually, really loud screaming.

In my childhood days - the immediate post -Civil Rights Era of the seventies and eighties - the alt-Right pipeline was simply growing up White and Southern surrounded by the dominant White adult culture.

Those of us with the will and intelligence to question the Old South paradigm largely rejected it, though pressure was always there to conform, and that pressure is insidious. Those who liked being - or at least liked appearing to be - at the top of the social and racial food chain, they’re the ones who became worse as they got older and are the backbone of the modern racist movement, or at least they seem to be so in my experience.

I’ve been cooking for myself since the fam has gone on their travels, but tonight I decided to go to a place I had heard about in the Queen City of NH. I ordered a bratwurst wrapped in pretzel with sour cream dip. It was awesome. Turns out the place was a choice for LGBTQ folks to gather before Pride events this weekend. It reminded be of asking a woman for a date in college and she suggested we go to see the Indigo Girls (our schoolmates) at a pub in Little Five Points in Atlanta. I hope lizards will take this in good humor, but it was me, my date (who was friends with several there), and about three female softball teams. That’s not a euphemism. They were literally in their uniforms from games. I was the only male in the pub for the entire show. The restaurant I went to tonight was like that. So I’m definitely taking my wife when she gets back. Good vibe.

Gizzard and necks get boiled. Neck then exit stage left. Gizzard get chopped up and go into the gravy along with the broth.

Gizzards confit and served with potatoes or braised, then served in salad.
