UROBOROS

I walk the line to find
To see ahead I look behind
And it’s all right
Sometimes I climb Escher stairs
Never leading anywhere
But it’s all right
From fractal to the galaxy
A revolution spiraling
And it’s all right
Sooner or later
Your luck will betray you
But tables will turn
And you’ll learn the behavior
And it’s all right

Got your tail in your mouth
And so it goes round and round
It’s the rule of the ring
It’s the kiss of the uroboros

It’s the secret clocks tell time
One turns and the other flies
And it’s all right
Another wheel inside a wheel
Inside another you can’t feel
And it’s all right

What is lost will be found
As the serpent coils round and round
Now the future’s the past
In the grasp of the uroboros

Round and round again
Where the end begins
Back where the beginning arrives
Season cycle spins
And the winter wind
Turns to summer’s sigh
Familiar stranger in
Some eternal return
Heads and tails flip
As fortunes turn

Got your tail in your mouth
And so it goes round and round
And It’s the rule of the ring
It’s the kiss of the uroboros
Now the future’s the past
In the grasp of the uroboros

re: #187 Florida Panhandler

Don’t be surprised if Trump does win in 2024 (or likely any other Republican) the entire Ukraine conflict will be turned on it’s head by the US officially withdrawing intel support, arms or training.

If it is indeed a Trump win it is likely he will announce a full “partnership” with Putin to end the Ukraine conflict now and actually help Russian victory efforts in a very public effort to lower gas prices and other economic problems. There will also be an unspoken hard right wing ideological alliance that will be hard to ignore, but many will simply because they indeed do want cheap gas.

I don’t think Russia can sustain this conflict until 2025.

I think there was a little bit in Sagan’s Contact about that: alien race encodes the instructions for a Machine in a radio transmission with no hint of what the Machine actually does. Big debate on whether this is a genocidal race telling us to build a bomb so they can cleanse the galaxy from their living room.

Speaking of morons (sort of a general topic), our county council approved a Pride Month designation (with none of the morons having read it) and then, “quietly” decided to rescind it.

“No one on council caught it because the resolution just said ‘pride month,’ ” Councilman Johnny Vaught told CNN in an email.

“We did not vote against gays, we didn’t vote against homosexuals, we didn’t vote against any of that.”

Vaught says from council’s point of view, the council is conservative, and said they had a few dozen residents upset about June being recognized as pride month in Horry County.

“All we’re saying is our constituents, they are very conservative, biblical type constituents that does not want us to sanction, and when I say sanction I mean give our blessings to the gay pride month.”

Now it’s a national news story (WaPo, CNN, Yahoo etc) and protests are planned for the next council meeting.

Just another day at the beach.

“The reception Walker received at the conference is an early indication that self-identified religious conservatives will give him a pass for a biographical detail at odds with their stated mission.”

During the Obama campaign, one of the Pajamas blogs floated a story that the wacky, dangerous “Obama cult” had developed a salute. You were supposed to clasp your hands together in a way that left a vaguely egg-shaped hole open in the center as raise you raise your arms up to the sky for the sunlight to shine through the opening.

The inevitable comparisons to goatse followed in the comment section of that story.

New reporting shows Thiel has set his sights on transforming American culture — and funding its culture wars — through what his associates refer to as “anti-woke” business ventures. These include a right-wing film festival, a gay dating app for conservatives founded by a former Trump administration ally and a firm, Strive Asset Management, that will “pressure CEOs to steer clear of environmental, social and political” causes, said Vivek Ramaswamy, the firm’s co-founder.

I wonder how big the demand for a “gay dating app for conservatives” will be?

52
sagehen  Jun 19, 2022 • 1:24:40pm

Or a right-wing film festival. Maybe they’ll have to put out their own movies… like a remake of “It’s a Wonderful Life”, where Mr Potter is the hero and George Bailey is the villain.

No, with a teenager with an AR-15 you can’t recognize the dead because they have no faces.

With a 20-30 year old with a 155 you can’t recognize the dead because you have to put the bits of the bodies in buckets.

So I am experimenting with the photo raw processing app Darktable. It’s Free & Open Source, originally on Unix-like OS’s but also available on Windows now too. I’ve been using Capture One, which is very good and very powerful, but expensive for the version for Leica (gee, surprise there). Thing is the camera does SOOC quite well and even when I edit the RAW files, I don’t really need to do much.

First SOOC monocrome then as processed from RAW:

Someone on NextDoor posted that they hired a moving company to move from Virginia to here in Rockwall and the company is holding their items for ransom.

My husband and I just moved here fromVA. We hired a moving company who is holding our stuff ransom. They scammed us out of money, furniture and precious memories. They state our items are in Rockwall but we are not sure. If someone see items like a white and gray milk jugs, bluish green sofa recliner, boxes with flag poles sticking out of it, a huge refrigerator and old stand up cream freezer, a brown dresser with fireplace in side it with bedroom suit and a gray bedroom suit with a dress with a mirror that is our stuff. We have no furniture and all my clothes are in that truck Please contact the Rockwall police.

And:

The company is based in Florida and state they ship from the Carolinas, Chicago, Dallas, San Diego, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Maryland and DC. The website is honestmoversmovingandstorage.com. The received $1422.23 scammed me out of $1500 more and want $6200 for the remaining balance. My contact stated $3500 and now they want me and saying it’s my problem. I contacted every news station from Va, TX to Florida and ATA, FTC, BBB and police. I al told by attorney this is a civil matter and it would cost more for legal fees than what they are asking. I don’t have this kind of money. The lady from the company is now wanting $3200 and a copy of the police report. And wants me to setup bill pay for the remainder and send her a picture of my bank account showing it was setup on bill pay. We are devastated. In 27 years of our marriage never in our wildest dreams we thought this would happen. Now she is wanting to charge me storage fees on top of it if I dont settle today.

Let’s talk about Vietnam…

Oh, Vietnam has lots of lessons that most people haven’t bothered to learn. About supporting corrupt governments because of a “personal relationship” and trying to fight an insurgency as if it were a regular army and finally not really being certain of our goals and selling them to the general public while desperately trying not to raise taxes because that has always been the bane of accomplishing anything in the US.

Heh. Ilford film: back in the Ancient Days I used to always use Ilford B&W whenever I could. Much superior to Kodak.

Very weird that the subject should come up: I had a dream a couple of nights ago about finding my old film-developing cans, and wondering what images were on them.

Heh. Ilford film: back in the Ancient Days I used to always use Ilford B&W whenever I could. Much superior to Kodak.

Very weird that the subject should come up: I had a dream a couple of nights ago about finding my old film-developing cans, and wondering what images were on them.
Strange.

I liked Ilford but it was always much harder to come by and more expensive, so I learned to make Plus-X do what I wanted (EI400 & developed in Diafine.) which kept me happy until Kodak killed it. After that I used Arista EDU Ultra (Foma reboxed for Freestyle photo supply).

I have an eye on a Nikon F with the plain pre-meter prism on Ebay. It would be tempting with a real roll of FP4+ ;)

Today, Mrs Cheechako and I are celebrating our 51st Anniversary. And I can remember that day 51 years ago just as if were yesterday. Both of us are still going strong.

Congratulations & here’s to 49 more!

Zedushka & I will have our 51st in August. Haven’t decided if we will celebrate at home or drive to NY like we did last year.

“There is violence in the future, I’m going to tell you,” said Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.), on ABC’s “This Week.” “And until we get a grip on telling people the truth, we can’t expect any differently.”

Well there are the occasional little triumphs in life.

I just appear to have successfully set up a wifi extender so that I can sit on my back porch and read lgf through my wifi router. There is some latency from going through the extender, but at least the pages actually come up now.

(Okay, it was pretty much plug and pray… I mean plug and play… But still…)

What prompted that was that the weather was in the mid 90’s on Friday. Saturday and today the temperature dropped 20 degrees with highs in the mid-70s. It felt almost chilly. There was also bright sunlight and a breeze blowing through.

Now that the extender is set up, we should be returning to our regularly scheduled weather of mid-to-upper 90s and daily rains. Welcome to Virginia.

But at least I will be able to sip iced tea and sweat on my back porch while reading lgf

Priorities!

The journalist group “Bellingcat” did a look at “Irish Limited Partnerships”. It is an Irish legal mechanism that can be used to obscure who the owners and beneficiaries of a partnership are. Up until 2015 or so, it was generally a responsibly used mechanism. Since then a small set of groups have used them extensively for purposes that may be less responsible.

We humans have migrated since we’ve been humans.

In the era of agriculture all of a sudden land boundaries became fighting points.

Far-right parties in Europe are getting their strength by selling fear of immigrants.

Sound familiar?

If current climate projects are anywhere near what will happen, by the later parts of this century hundreds of millions of people will need to migrate.

The genocide that will then bring about (because we humans are violent animals) will be overwhelming.

Back a couple of hundred years ago, in the time of “Wooden Ships and Iron Men”, one warfighting technique was to set a ship ablaze and let it drift into a harbor full of other wooden ships. Guaranteed to cause excitement and mayhem. And maybe even take out a few neighborhoods as well as ships.

Sounds like this one drifted the wrong way, though.

Interesting statistical study on political violence.

A few points from it:

*snip*
Moreover, we observe a statistically significant interaction between Trump support and the political violence profile: those who are highest on the political violence profile exhibit the strongest connection between Trump support and support for the Capitol riot. Thus, approval of real-world political violence appears to be the product of a toxic blend of partisan attachments and several non-political orientations that encourage violence.
*snip*

*snip*
Six variables—systemic victimhood, populism, racial resentment, authoritarianism, current or former military enlistment, and white identity—prove useful in classifying levels of support for political violence.
*snip*

*snip*
Our analysis shows that authoritarianism is mostly likely to lead to support for violence when one also subjectively feels like a victim—authoritarianism is, perhaps, used as a strong-arm remedy for victimhood, rather than blind support for any authority figure.

Another recent study on political violence:

(MSM - Militant Social Movement)

Some of the conclusions:

*snip*
Many of the same far-right groups and networks involved in the Capitol attack have adapted their activity to fit the new environment. These adaptations have manifested in multiple ways: the landscape of actors has become more defined; demonstration engagement has shifted, with a focus on protests that allow for the co-option of new supporters; some actors, like the Proud Boys, have increased their use of violence; armed protests have proliferated, particularly at legislative facilities; contentious counter-demonstration trends have intensified; offline propaganda and vigilantism is on the rise, especially motivated by white supremacy and white nationalism; and preparatory actions have surged, including recruitment drives and training exercises.
*snip*

*snip*
Key Findings

While the total number of active far-right militias and militant social movements (MSMs) declined last year, many groups actually increased their activity and influence.

Despite the heightened threat of violence, law enforcement intervention in demonstrations involving far-right groups continued to decrease.

Counter-demonstrations (involving two opposing groups) have become more violent, and the risk that violence will break out is even higher if far-right militias and MSMs are present.

White nationalist and white supremacist activity is on the rise, accounting for the majority of demonstrations involving militias and MSMs in late 2021, and fueling offline propaganda and border vigilantism.

Demonstrations involving far-right groups are more frequently armed, and these armed demonstrations are increasingly focused on statehouses and legislative facilities.

Beyond political violence and protest activity, far-right militias and MSMs are ramping up preparatory actions, such as recruitment drives and training exercises.

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Four non-scientific buildings at the Kitt Peak National Observatory southwest of Tucson were lost in a wildfire, but early indications show other buildings on the property didn’t appear to be damaged, authorities said Saturday.

Buell T. Jannuzi, who leads the Department of Astronomy at the University of Arizona, said the fire didn’t appear to have damaged the telescope and science buildings at the observatory, though a closer examination of the site hadn’t yet been made due to safety concerns

What a great name. I thought there was a planetarium sharing his first name, but it’s Buhl Planetarium, Pittsburgh.

I went to Buhl Planetarium many times back in the 1960s when I was in elementary school. The coolest thing to my grade school self was the giant Van de Graaff generator and the tesla coil. They also had a large auditorium with a huge dome and a Zeiss projector for “sky shows”. (And of course, there were telescopes.)

I’ve complained before about the complete collapse of good taste and dignity among the very rich. This piece, in which the narrator carries on as though “private vs. commercial” is a real consumer choice rather than just a backhanded way of boasting that you can afford to fly private, is a good example. If you don’t have this choice you have apparently fallen off the humanity scale entirely. She would no doubt get the vapors if you told her there are people who can’t afford to fly at all, not even the peasant/steerage class.
Disclosure: I fly private on short trips, but not in a jet and I do the flying (and a fair part of the maintenance) myself.

Lebombo (ZS-BMH) was the last DC-4 built ( 4 August 1947). It is still airworthy with the South African AIrways museum.
In 1962 it survived a mid-air collision with a South African military Harvard (T-6) trainer. It landed with a sizable part of the tail missing. None of the 51 passengers and crew were injured. The two crew in the T-6 bailed out and also survived.

To me there are a small number of really great aircraft before 1945. In reverse order…

5) DC-4
4) Sharkfin (XB-17 to B-17D) (Without these models we wouldn’t have had the planes that pounded Europe into rubble)
3) P-12E/F4B-4
2) P-36 & P-40 series
1) DC-3/C-47

The latest edition of RV Magazine has an article about a guy who converted a DC-3 into a motorhome by mounting the fuselage of the plane to a diesel truck chassis. Wings and tail were removed. They are but transient creatures around a dog, here for just a moment in time.

We’re going to have to train him to put his toy’s back… of course it will have to happen under direct human supervision; dogs aren’t that self-actualized. He’s about to be a teenager in dog years. He’s stubborn, energetic, and extremely intelligent.

I think we have reached peak Germanophilia. I met a guy recently who thought, or rather just assumed, that rocket pioneer Robert Goddard was a German. I said no, Goddard was an American. He said, “Well, sure, he was nationalized after they brought him here in Operation Paperclip.”
Er, no, Goddard was born in Worcester Massachusetts in 1882 and actually died just before the end of World War ll.
Among other things, Goddard flew a gimballed nozzle rocket in 1937, a technology that Wernher von Braun and his team did not master and apply until they had been in the US for 10 years.
How is it that pop culturists know all about von Braun and Paperclip but have never heard of Goddard or Frank Malina or Jack Parsons or Hsue-Shen Tsien? Their work at JPL (another historical secret) led to such crucial technologies as high impulse solid and hypergolic (self igniting) propellants that von Braun had never seen before Paperclip brought him to this country.
I am of course aware of the German rocket engineers and their contributions. Giving them exclusive credit for the US space program, as conformist pop culture does, is not historically accurate and denigrates the achievements of many many others and indirectly reinforces notions of genetic superiority.

It is propaganda, pure but not so simple since it seems to serve several conflicting agendas at once. It is popular with those who want to smear the space program as the work of Nazi criminals as well as to Nazis themselves who want to trumpet their own alleged superiority, and to more benign but still arrogant and jingoistic commercial operations.
I get a little annoyed hearing a lecture about “superior German engineering” from someone who doesn’t know how a garage door opener works.

I’m pretty sure Biden’s been around the block enough times to have known that the performative anti-war crowd was just going to pivot to the next grievance without a minute’s pause (like and subscribe!). I don’t know if he and his administration counted on the volume of relentless pounding from the mainstream media and pundits, which was completely disgusting.

Getting out of Afghanistan was the right thing to do for many reasons, and a promise. But trying to make a group of people happy whose entire psyches and business models are to never be happy with anything Democrats do is pointless, and if they feel ignored by actual working Dems there’s a good reason for that.

Anyone who wants a comprehensive, balanced, and jingo-
free history of rocketry and spaceflight, from ancient China to the Space Shuttle, should read The Rocket by David Baker. It features a lot of seldom seen material on early (pre-World War II) Soviet developments and it places von Braun and the Germans in proper perspective, That is, a lot of credit but not all of it.

Baker is British. British writers seem to dominate aerospace history as a serious pursuit. Maybe it’s in their genes (they literally invented jingoism after all) but it’s more likely a legacy of World War II, the Royal Observer Corps, and a sizable percentage of the population having been eyewitnesses to aerial warfare.

Markos wrote “I’m a sucker for these kinds of videos”:

From his article:

Meanwhile, if Ukraine was suffering up to 1,000 casualties per day, how would it have the ability to engage in counter-offensives around Kharkiv, Kherson, and Izyum? It’s clear that Ukraine has significant spare capacity to wreak havoc across three other battlefronts. Now, all three of those counteroffensives are limited in scope. Russia is too entrenched, the terrain is too exposed to artillery defenses, and Ukraine doesn’t have the numbers to punch their way through. But they’re nibbling around the edges, forcing Russia to redirect reserves away from the Donbas to these other fronts, lest they lose more hard-gained territory.

This “we’re getting smacked hard” narrative was also at odds with what Ukraine’s military command has been reporting. Indeed, the disparity between civilian and military Ukrainian leadership has been stark. Compare a presidential advisor to Ukraine’s military command speaking of Western artillery donations:

Ukraine urgently needs to shift to longer-range and more sophisticated Western systems, but those have only recently been committed, and in insufficient quantities to match Russia’s immense firepower, he said.

Vs:

It is worth noting, for instance, that the initial request of the Armed Forces regarding 155 mm artillery units has been 90% fulfilled by the Ministry of Defence.

Indeed, their MoD announced that they had 110% more artillery shells now than at the beginning of the war!

A pretty good update on what’s going on.

“Our policy is that people have a right to seek asylum and that Abbott has no authority to close points of entry or arrest those seeking asylum.”

Because Republicans have manufactured the crisis, there is no winning on it without sending or nationalizing troops in a state that freaked out over a routine training exercise during the Obama administration.

That’s a possibility, it was very sunny, but my head is also stuffed up. And I discovered the fancypants thermometer I bought earlier this year will flash red if your temperature is, well, high. Mine was 103 at 3 am. I’m back down to 99.3 now, so no flashing.

My GoPro crapped out (something wrong with the SD card), so the only video I have of me is when I pulled out my cell phone and started recording. I’m kind of annoyed. I have some observations, but I want to get some more rest before setting them down.

Must have been some spicy tacos!

A California man said he beat his co-worker to death because he believed that the colleague was having an affair with his wife, according to a report.

Jose Gutierrez-Rosales, 49, allegedly beat Hector Javier Castaneda Vasquez, 56, with an irrigation pipe while the two were working together on April 18, according to details about the killing that were revealed this week.

“We were there picking up the pipes,” he said to Kern County Sheriff’s investigators, according to KGET, citing court documents. “I ate about two tacos, and I felt my body like strange, and then all of a sudden, I grabbed the pipe, and I just started going at him.”

“This is for getting involved with my family,” Gutierrez-Rosales reportedly said he told Vasquez as he kept hitting him.

Former President Donald Trump called it a “bad decision” by House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) to completely withdraw from the January 6 Committee, Mediaite reports.

Said Trump: “This committee, it was a bad decision not to have representation on that committee. That was a very, very foolish decision because they try to pretend like they’re legit, and only when you get into the inner workings you say ‘what kind of a thing is this?’ Just a one-sided witch hunt.”
