Money was spent training and equipping these yokels, who even conducted a training exercise weeks before the shooting on how to handle the whole thing. Yet the moment a shooting occurred, they stood around outside, dicks in hand, waiting for somebody to step up and take charge so they had a fall guy if (really “when”) shit hit the political fan.

Because I have decided to see how far I can make it through this site on learning physics, susanrigetti.com, I have started reading some of the non-technical books she recommends at the top. I just finished the First Three Minutes, and I am now starting the Character of Physical Law, based on some of Richard Feynman’s lectures. Interesting fact: when he was hired on at Cornell in 1945, he was such a distinguished lecturer by then that the school bumped his salary up 33% to $4,000 per year.

There’s pretty much no good way to spin the events of that day. The cops were there, they were in force, they had weapons and equipment aplenty, but they spent precious minutes waiting for somebody to take charge just so they had somebody to blame after it was all over.

sre: #24 The GOP is a racist terrorist organization

Boycott the living shit out of Texas.

Would love to do it but too many companies are happy with a racist fascist regime as long as their taxes are low and their employees don’t have too many rights. I have come around to the belief that capitalism may be incompatible with democracy and equality. Companies will abandon employee rights and well-being for a larger bottom line that benefits the wealthiest. They have long eliminated US jobs in preference to locating factories in lower wage countries that had fewer environmental standards or rights. And most Americans are happy to buy cheaper products even if it means that slave labor was used and other Americans have lost everything.

So hate it when our brother boasts about all the companies relocating to Texas.

On a lighter note — wording tonight — 3/6

And most Americans are happy to buy cheaper products even if it means that slave labor was used and other Americans have lost everything.

I think it’s simply more that most Americans simply can’t afford to buy more expensive, American-made products. They buy cheap out of necessity.

It’s not just in the US, either - here in Czech Republic, Xiaomi mobile phones are big sellers because most people here simply can’t afford to spend a month’s wages on a phone…and mobile providers simply don’t offer things like “get a free/low cost new iPhone when you sign up for new service or renew your contract”.

Hell, I’d love to have an iPhone, like most Czechs would - but an entire month’s wages for a phone, which I’d have to purchase outright because there’s no installment plans, yeah….that’s just a pipe dream. And consumer credit? LOL banks only offer that to the wealthy.

Evidence seems to show that more training is not the answer.

It doesn’t seem to be amount or quality of training so much as what the training entails. At this point, it seems pretty clear that cops in this country are being trained to put their safety and their jobs ahead of any other concerns. That their job performance is rated on arrests that lead to convictions than about actual crime statistics. And that your rights and your safety are the least important factors in how a cop handles a situation.

I wouldn’t say that, but wind and solar is saving it right now.

One main problem Texas has right now is their grid planning is so poor they are making more solar power than they can deliver via transmission lines.

Not enough transmission lines for the solar they have already installed is a big bottleneck so really any more generation is not an immediate solution.

and in that vein, you should take 5 minutes and read the first two items at electoral-vote.com today

Once a politician, or a political movement, commits to the notion that rules don’t matter, that might makes right, and that all that counts is that you feel you’re entitled to power, then Pandora’s Box has been opened. Because, at that point, if you’re not going to play by the rules, then why should your opponents do so?

and they aren’t necessarily referring to the D’s

Just in case you were under any illusions that Mike Pence might have turned over a new leaf, and that he might help pull the Republican Party back from the brink, the former VP helpfully disabused us of that notion yesterday.

Across the pond, the trains aren’t running.

Militant unions left Britain’s town and city centres deserted today and returned them to ‘the darkest days of Covid’ today with pubs, cafes and restaurants set to lose £540million in a week because of the worst combined rail and Tube strike in the UK for 30 years.

More than 50,000 union members have walked out over demands for a 11 per cent pay rise as millions battled into work, were forced to work from home or unable to earn money at all this week in a new ‘devastating’ hammer blow to the already creaking economy.

The UK has been forced into another de facto lockdown that could be the death knell for many small businesses who have already been struggling for the past two years due to the pandemic and were just getting back on their feet.

The fact that we as a country have a large plurality of citizens who are fully on board with electing known criminals, con men, violent sociopaths and wanting to criminalize vast swaths of the American patchwork points to us being, if not a failed state already, then something like a Zombie state.

IMO we are already a Zombie state where inertia keeps the wheels turning against obstructionist Republicans and a conservative voter base throwing every wrench into the works they can in an effort to derail any progress on any policy front. Add to the fact that it is likely any Republican President will issue blanket pardons on most or all violent terrorists who tried to kidnap or kill members of Congress and the VP and what we have is not a nation based on law or policy, but on personality and convenience.

Said Trump: “It was the largest group I think that I’ve ever seen or made a speech to. I’ve never seen anything like it and there they were well behaved. So many, so many people. Nobody ever talks about that.”

how many lies can you pack into two sentences

i guess the first one could be true, as an in person thing
well behaved? sure, while you were speaking maybe…
oh and everyone’s talking about - there are even hearings going on

Crush White Nationalism  Jun 21, 2022 • 7:13:30am
Elon Musk’s daughter revealed that she wants to sever all ties with her father in court documents that were filed in April.
Shortly after her 18th birthday, the teenager — who is transgender — submitted a petition for a change of name, recognition of change of gender, and the issuance of a new birth certificate.

She was given the name Xavier Musk at birth, but now wants her name to be Vivian Jenna Wilson. The last name was her mom Justine Musk’s maiden name.
Vivian filed the documents in L.A. County, and while one of her reasons for the requested changes was to correct her gender identity, she also revealed the extent of her strained relationship with her famous father.

The reasons listed behind the name change on the court papers read: “Gender identity and the fact that I no longer live with or wish to be related to my biological father in any way, shape or form.”

When I worked at NIST (I was there when they changed from NBS (National Bureau of Standards) to NIST). Our lab ran on a Textronix 4010 machine. The disc drive used 8” disc that held (I think) 160k, but it may have been that 140k that the Apple stored. And the drives were monsterous.

It was a fun machine to program; then we moved to an HP system which was soooo much less old, definitely not cutting edge, though, we had little money.

If it wasn’t for Putin’s stirring up shit in Transnistria, Moldova could join NATO…and they’d get along a lot better with Romania.

Exactly!

Moldova is currently applying for EU membership with Ukraine and Georgia. There have also been “trial balloons” floated about merging with Romania.

I agree that the Transnistria issue will likely be used to postpone Moldava’s entry into the EU. (It also has all sorts of FSU corruption and good government issues.) But they are finally trying figure out what to do with the separatists. If Russia loses in Ukraine, the Russian forces propping up the separatists are going to be geographically as well as politically isolated.

Meanwhile in Caucasian Georgia, there have been massive demonstrations for more links to the West and fewer with Russia. Unfortunately, I suspect that Georgia is too far from Europe to achieve much. As they found out in 2008.

But yes, Ukraine’s successful defiance of Putin is causing a major shift in FSU countries. I guess we will see whether those changes can stick.

At some point, if things continue to deteriorate, Putin may feel the need to address these issues. Or maybe Russia will feel the need to address Putin.

Yeah: this was foreseen a couple of years ago. I remember reading scotusblog.com and lost in the hoorah over some more-prominent decision (over Trump’s papers, IIRC) was a narrow decision striking down a (?)Montana state law debarring an estate-tax exemption for bequests to religious schools. It was a fairly obscure decision at the time (and this was the pre-Trumpian Court), but I recall several commenters remarking that this had the potential to be a real thin-end-of-the-wedge decision, as (again, IIRC) the “rationale” was that that sort of “discrimination” against religious institutions was some variety of “impingement on religious freedom” - or some such bullshit. I also recall that some of the fears for precedent were derided as scare-talk; though it should have been obvious (and is blatantly so, now) that SCOTUS and its decision are now being run by people who fervently believe that the separation of Church and State is a bad idea and wrong principle…..

ETA - I thank you for posting this! I was not aware of Sacks and his criticisms before. As always, I appreciate what I see on lgf!

I think that Sacks is completely wrong here.

The Lithuanian enforcement of European Union embargoes (yes, with likely Polish support) is specifically designed to affect the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Putin has been pressuring his Belarus dictator client Lukashenko to join in the war against Ukraine. Lukashenko has been resisting. The war is highly unpopular in Belarus. So is Lukashenko.

Much of Lukashenko’s support comes from within the Army and state security leadership. Sending them in to get shredded by the Ukrainians is going to damage Lukashenko further.

Now Lukashenko will need to send even more of his Army to sit on the Belarus and Lithuanian and Polish borders. And this will help him avoid getting pushed into the Ukrainian fiasco.

I think that if you look at Sack’s Twitter Feed, you will see that he has constantly aligned himself with the Putin on the invasion of Ukraine.

Shit, in most cases they are not even “sincerely held”. They’re just a means to an end.

Sorry. Sincerely held*

* = Christian beliefs that we say are sincerely held in order to make it sound important that they be protected and enshrined in law, even though they have fuck all to do with actual Christianity and probably aren’t all that sincerely held by anybody with more than two brain cells to rub together.

This will send the Trumpers over the edge. There are few people more hated by them than Congressman Schiff.

Russia declares that Ukraine has no historical validation to exist as a nation as it was only created in 1923

Russia declares it a “hostile act” for Lithuania to interrupt supplies of food to the Kaliningrad exclave.

Kaliningrad was annexed by the USSR after WW2. By their own standards it has no historical justification.

Russia does not see it as a hostile act to disrupt supplies of grain and other food from Ukrainian ports to the rest of the world.

Yes, a large bag of pickled dicks is in order.

In case anyone is curious, there’s a list of train songs on wiki.

This IWW song isn’t on it:

Youtube Video

I was just a smalltime country boy
When I left that dusty town
Route 66 to the westward
And I hopped an old freight down
California here I come
By the side door
Pullman and the sunburnt thumb
And they called us Okies, lowdown bums
And the police on us frowned.

Chorus:
Never tire of the road
Never tire of the rolling wheel
Never tire of the ways of the world
Way out yonder’s calling me
And the dark road leads me onwards
And the highway that’s my code
And the lonesome voice that I heard in my head said
Never tire of the road.

California to the New York Island
My and my guitar
And we played in many’s a hobo jungle
Many’s a skid row bar
Standing out in the wind and the rain
That lonesome whistle is a sweet refrain
When you’re waiting for some old freight train
That carries an empty car.

(Chorus)

Don’t let them ever fool you
Or take you by surprise
The dirty smell of the politician
And the man with the greed in his eyes
One Big Union that’s our plan
And the IWW’s your only man
The flames of discotent to fan
For the cause that never dies.

(Chorus)

This is a conservative trial balloon for rejecting religious exemptions for abortion by denying the sincerity of liberal Jews.

Since they reserve the right to decide which religious views are “deeply held”.

It is an actual tenet of Jewish Law (not a sectarian belief held by some groups but not others) that the life of the woman takes precedence over the life of the fetus.

I’ve never been a big fan of creamy tomato but the grilled cheese is part of my recipe. Basil in mine but the five-spice is the dominate note.
