I met with Napper Tandy
And I shook him by the hand
He said “Hold me up for Chrissake
For I can hardly stand”
The most disgraceful journey
On which I’ve ever been
The last time that I travelled on
The Boat Train
I had a couple of drinks in town
A few more at the port
I puked up on the gangway
But some kind folks helped me board
They helped me to a table
Poured whiskey down my throat
They sat me at a table
And I lost my watch and coat
First we drank some whiskey
Then we drank some gin
Then we drank tequila
I think that’s what did me in
Then we drank some brandy
And the women had a dance
The steward then announced
That we could play the game of “chance”

So during Sigfried and Roy’s tiger show, Roy appeared in a brand-new pair of snakeskin boots.

One of the cats, thinking there were real snakes attacking his feet and ankles, pounced and bit him up badly, then quickly returned to its pedestal.

It all happened so quickly and everyone was in such shock from the event that nobody was exactly sure which of the tigers it was. So they took photos to Roy, as he would certainly be able to recognize the one who attacked him.

As he came to from surgery, they showed him a photo of the chief suspect and asked:

“Pardon me, Roy, is that the cat that chewed your new shoes?”

This is an announcement
For the transcendental run
The train now standing
Leaves for higher planes
Due to a derailment
There will be no other train
So why not hop on this one?
Hear the porter’s glad refrain
Each carriage is connected
As is every single train
The rails all form a track
Which is a link within a chain
The chain’s connected to another chain now
You will need no ticket
If you wish to ride on this train
Chorus:
All aboard the express kundalini
All aboard the express kundalini
All aboard the express kundalini
The song is in your heart
Your heart is in the song
The song is of the earth
The song is of the sky
You are disintegrating
Into everything around
Reintegrating
The worm we dug from higher ground
You have let go of ego
Ego is no longer you
Closer to nirvana
Since the porters whistle blew

The only words I want to hear out of Ron Johnson’s mouth are “Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley made me do it.”

you mean this?:

“A top aide to Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) attempted to arrange a handoff of false, pro-Trump electors from the senator to Mike Pence just minutes before the then-vice president began to count electoral votes on Jan. 6, 2021,” Politico reports.

“The aide, Sean Riley, told Pence’s legislative director Chris Hodgson that Johnson wanted to hand Pence lists of the fake electors from Michigan and Wisconsin for Pence to introduce during the counting of electoral votes that certified Joe Biden’s win.”

I have real mixed feelings about Bowers’ statement. I definitely agree with many here that it was discouraging to hear him talk about the Constitution as “divinely inspired.” That’s not just fantasyland and dangerous, but also ahistorical. That was a profoundly unChristian period in our history—right in between the “great awakenings.” But I have deeply faithful parents (who hate Trump) who have friends that voted for Trump, and it helps them push back on those former church friends. Or it would if my dad weren’t suffering from dementia and most of their Trump-loving friends die in the last five years.

It seems to me that what underlies all the Trump, Eastman, Cleta Mitchell, Giuliani etc machinations is the belief that the courts would ultimately support them — and that this belief was inspired by the precedent set by the 2000 election, where the Brooks Brothers riot stopped the recount in Florida and then Roberts, Kavanaugh, and (as my sister calls her) Amy Coney Island worked successfully to get SCOTUS to install Bush as President. So there was good reason for Trump et al to believe that the current court with those rabid Republicans as justices would ultimately support their plots.

Independent orthopedic surgeon Al Gross dropped out of the Alaska House race on Monday and threw his support behind two Native women candidates: Republican Tara Sweeney and former Democratic state Rep. Mary Peltola.

In a statement, Gross said that he and his wife Monica decided “it is just too hard to run as a nonpartisan candidate in this race.” The Gross campaign did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

“It is with great hope for Alaska’s future that I have decided to end my campaign to become our state’s next Congressman,” Gross wrote. “There are two outstanding Alaska Native women in this race who would both serve our state well, and I encourage my supporters to stay engaged and consider giving their first-place vote to whichever of them best matches their own values. Thank you for your support.”

After the special primary election earlier this month, CNN projected that Gross and three other candidates — former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, Republican businessman Nick Begich III and Peltola — would compete in the August 16 special general election.

But while Alaska law has a procedure to replace a withdrawn candidate with the fifth place finisher, in this case likely to be Sweeney, Gross’ announcement came too late for that law to apply, according to Alaska’s Division of Elections director Gail Fenumiai.

re: #99 Barefoot Grin

I have real mixed feelings about Bowers’ statement. I definitely agree with many here that it was discouraging to hear him talk about the Constitution as “divinely inspired.” That’s not just fantasyland and dangerous, but also ahistorical. That was a profoundly unChristian period in our history—right in between the “great awakenings.” But I have deeply faithful parents (who hate Trump) who have friends that voted for Trump, and it helps them push back on those former church friends. Or it would if my dad weren’t suffering from dementia and most of their Trump-loving friends die in the last five years.

Evangelicals are going to excuse what Rusty Bowers had to say by pointing out that he’s Mormon, thus a cultist, and not really a true Christian. Their proof: he thinks the Constitution is divinely inspired. The only divinely inspired thing they believe in is that Bible they constantly cherrypick.

I had to yell at someone on Twitter earlier by pointing out that you can’t cobble together a doctrine by yanking three separate sets of verses from three different texts and call it done. The texts in question (1 Timothy, Titus and 1 Peter) were written by different people at different times to different audiences, and it is so abusive of the texts to just pull them out and say, ok, “this is our belief about pastors.” I mean, that’s even before you get to the very real likelihood that all three texts are pseudigrapha—written in the name of someone else. In this case, 1 Timothy and Titus were written by someone else in the name of Paul, and 1 Peter was written in the name of Peter. The Wikipedia articles go into some detail if you’re interested, but man, that shiz gets tedious.

LONDON (Reuters) - Recent implosions in the cryptocurrency markets indicate that long-warned-about dangers of decentralised digital money are now materialising, the Bank for International Settlements has said.

The BIS, the global umbrella body for central banks, sounded the warning in an upcoming annual report, in which it also urged more effort in developing appealing central bank digital currencies.

BIS general manager Agustin Carstens pointed to recent collapses of the TerraUSD and luna ‘stablecoins’, and a 70% slump in bitcoin, the bellwether for the crypto market, as indicators that a structural problem exists.

Without a government-backed authority that can use reserves funded by taxes, any form of money ultimately lacks credibility.”

“I think all these weaknesses that were pointed out before have pretty much materialised,” Carstens told Reuters. “You just cannot defy gravity… At some point you really have to face the music”.

Analysts estimate that the overall value of the crypto market has slumped more that $2 trillion since November as its troubles have snowballed.

Crypto fears now materialising, central bank body BIS says (Reuters)

Because of the interest in The Boys expressed here, I decided to try it out and just watched episode 1 season 1 (through my sister’s Prime account). Except for Starlight, the “superheroes” all seem terrible people, with Homelander clearly a supervillain.

He may not be in prison, but civil suits are getting a little justice for the survivors of Bill Cosby’s sexual abuse.

A California jury on Tuesday found that Bill Cosby sexually assaulted a 16-year-old girl at the Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles in 1975.

The decision in the civil case is the latest defeat in a long legal saga for the 84-year-old comedian, who was once one of America’s most beloved entertainers but has faced dozens of assault allegations over the past two decades. Cosby was freed from prison nearly a year ago after his 2018 sexual assault conviction was thrown out, overturning the results of a high-profile #MeToo-era case. Cosby’s spokesperson said Tuesday that he plans to appeal the latest decision.

Outside the Santa Monica courthouse, Judy Huth, now 64, celebrated the culmination of her years-long legal battle.

“I was elated,” Huth told reporters, describing her reaction to the verdict. “Seriously, it’s been so many years, so many tears, just a long time coming.”

Jurors awarded Huth $500,000 in damages and found that Cosby intentionally caused harmful sexual contact with Huth, who was then a minor. One of Huth’s attorneys, the prominent feminist lawyer Gloria Allred, said in a statement that her client “won real change” by showing that Cosby “should be held accountable for what he did to her.”

While not a criminal ruling, the successful civil case “shows there is another avenue of justice,” Allred said in a brief post-trial appearance.

*snip*

Huth filed her lawsuit in 2014. She first met Cosby in April 1975, when he was filming a movie in San Marino, Calif., court documents say.

This month, Huth testified that Cosby molested her after he gave her and her friend Donna Samuelson a tour of the Playboy Mansion and game room, the Associated Press reported. Samuelson, who was 17 at the time, took photos that evening and was a witness in the trial.

Of course he’s going to appeal. Of course.

And why yes, I’m up in the middle of the night, because (a) I haven’t been sleeping well and (b) I have this furball who can tell when I’m not hard asleep and she pesters me for treats. I finally got up, checked my temp (100.4) and Sp02 (96%), got some Tylenol and water, and gave the cat some treats.

At least I was more careful with the treats than yesterday afternoon, where I opened a new bag and spilled Quite A Bit More Than A Cat Should Have At One Time on the floor. I let her have some of the treats, but scooped the rest into the bag. A few hours later I walked downstairs and *damn* if she hadn’t stuck her furry paw under the stove/oven and pulled out a whole bunch of dust bunnies and detritus. I assume she found more treats. She was pretty thorough.

No winners here.

The mother of a Connecticut kid accused of deliberately setting his 6-year-old neighbor on fire wants the burned boy’s family punished after newly released video contradicted their claims.

Laura Giacobbe, in an interview with The Post on Tuesday, called on cops to arrest little Dominick Krankall’s mom for allegedly lying about the April incident and putting her son “though hell.”

“Her child got to go to Yankee Stadium while my child sat inside in fear because of all the statements made against him,” Giacobbe, 45, said from her home in Bridgeport.

“I want her to get arrested because I don’t think it’s fair. It’s defamation of character,” Giacobbe continued. “She slandered my family. She put my son through hell. She put me in hell. I want her arrested for false statements.”

Krankall’s family had claimed Dominick suffered second- and third-degree burns after being targeted by an 8-year-old bully while playing in his backyard in Bridgeport on April 24.

You know, I’m really hating how politics and crime is covered in this country. Basic facts and all. Completely missed by so-called journalists who are senior and in position to know better. They are misinforming the masses with their nonsense, and their tweets are even worse.

We know that the 1/6 Commission is bipartisan. There are Republicans on the commission. They just weren’t the ones McCarthy and Trump wanted on there, because they’re not intent on distracting and deflecting from Trump criminal conduct and the criminal conduct of all those conspiring with Trump and his lackeys/cronies/coconspirators/accomplices across government. They want to shed light on all of them.

All these GOPers who are claiming that they should get equal time ignore that nearly all the witnesses, nearly all of the evidence, testimony, and statements, are coming from Trumpworld GOPers and those who interacted with Trumpworld. We’re talking about longtime GOPers who are stating under oath that Trump engaged in criminal conduct.

That’s why McCarthy wanted clowns like Jordan on the Commission. He wanted Jordan to distract, deflect, and obfuscate all while the evidence showed Trump engaged in rampant crimes.

re: #290 Belafon

For the non-lawyer, what does this mean?

Basically, instead of just opposing the motions to dismiss, Trump’s attorney doubled down on the stupid by trying to fix as many of the problems with the complaint as possible. The problem is, the lawsuit is fundamentally flawed from the outset, so nothing the attorney tries to do is really going to help. The “right strategy” here - and one that I expected, and Akiva did too - would have been to just let this die in the motion to dismiss phase, and fuel a conspiracy theory that They (tm) shut down the lawsuit on procedural grounds because They (tm) didn’t want the truth to come out. Instead, they’re pressing forward with it, and I feel sorry for the lawyers here who aren’t going to get paid after they lose this turdbucket of a case.

Basically, instead of just opposing the motions to dismiss, Trump’s attorney doubled down on the stupid by trying to fix as many of the problems with the complaint as possible. The good news is that I haven’t heard anything about variants of concern wrt Poliovirus, so *knocks wood* ze polio jab should still woik.

Apparently, covid is an outlier (also influenza). Most RNA viruses are stable, and no-one knows (yet?) why the rapidly mutating ones do it.

There is a famous Russian train story my Mikhail Zadornov called The Ninth Wagon. Train seats are assigned based on which wagon they are in (starting from the front of the train)

Through a mixup, a sleeper train had two ninth wagons. So after the first one had filled, other passengers started getting on, and found the ninth wagon filled up. This led to great confusion until conductors figured what was going on, so they called ahead to the next station to “uncouple the second ninth wagon”.

But the fellows decoupling were counting from the end of the train, so they decoupled the first ninth wagon rather than the second empty ninth wagon and left the passengers stranded on a siding out in the middle of the steppe…

One-fifth of Americans believe every school shooting is a fake event filled with “crisis actors”

Williamson also just published an article on Slate where she provides an overview of the book, and presents a fascinating look of one of the Sandy Hook deniers she interviewed for the book, a woman named Kelley Watt — one of those “ordinary, everyday people” I mentioned above who stumble upon these conspiracy theories and use their social media platforms to spread their lies.

She brought up Chris and Lynn McDonnell, parents of 7-year-old Grace, a child with striking pale blue eyes who liked to paint. Lynn McDonnell told CNN’s Anderson Cooper that Grace had drawn a peace sign and the message “Grace Loves Mommy” in the fogged bathroom mirror after her shower, leaving traces her mother found after her death. She described the abyss she felt upon seeing her daughter’s white casket and recalled how she, Chris, and Grace’s brother, Jack, used markers to fill its stark emptiness with colorful drawings of things Grace loved.

Watt mocked this reminiscence in a singsong tone. “‘Ohhhhh, Grace. She loved loved loved loved loved Sandy Hook, and we’re glad she’s in heaven with her teacher, and she’s with her classmates, and we feel good about that,’” she said. “‘She had a white coffin, and we busted out the Sharpies and drew a skillet and a sailboat.’ NOBODY CRIED,” she barked.

Watt’s feral lack of empathy astonished me. Watt a few minutes earlier had boasted about her son Jordan’s voracious reading habits and how well her daughter, Madison, played the piano. If Watt’s children died, wouldn’t she also speak highly of them and their gifts?

“No. This was to build up the sympathy factor,” she said. “I think they’re people with a gun control agenda.

They love the cruelty of this. It gives them an excuse to mock and abuse bereaved parents. This is a real thing. I had a jerk mock and ridicule me when my wife died. Who was he? A conservative Bible student at Wayland Baptist University. There is hope though. I believe we are in the middle of a surge point in human evolution. People like this will be eliminated by their own cruel, stupid, impulsive actions, from antivaxx to their fatally flawed belief in their mastery of violence. Antivaxx alone has culled several hundred thousand of them in the last two years. I think their insane commitment to violence and “second amendment solutions” will kill more in the near future. I feel no pity or empathy for these people. They have none, their cruelty is calculated, a primary value for them in and of itself.

The website for Mehmet Oz’s campaign to become U.S. Senator representing Pennsylvania is currently devoid of any imagery of former President Donald Trump. Normally that’s not a terribly newsworthy observation, but as the eagle-eyed folks at Axios have noted, past Trump branding and imagery of Oz and the former president together have been scrubbed from the site in what is a clear shift in campaign strategy.

Is this a proper distancing by the television host from Trump, whose endorsement appeared to play a key role in his tightly fought primary victory? Or is it standard political repositioning in advance of a general election? Either way, it’s noteworthy, particularly as Trump faces new criticism from former political allies for a myriad of reasons.

This is the crux of the difference between an actual fucking conspiracy, and a conspiracy theory. Conspiracy theories quickly balloon out of the realm of plausibility because of all the people who would ostensibly be involved, or who would know something about the conspiracy and thus be required to keep quiet. The “inflationary theory” of conspiracy theories states that eventually, a conspiracy theory will spiral outward until everyone in the world, less the theory’s advocates, will have to be involved or have knowledge of the conspiracy - at which point, it has become the worst possible conspiracy theory, because it involves literally the entire world sitting on the conspiracy and keeping it quiet.

I have studied this stuff for decades. I am absolutely convinced that the “harmless” claims paved the way for antivaxx, 1-6, and the constant enabling of mass murder. There is, in fact, a direct connection in many cases. Alex Jones started with UFOs and alien abductions 30 years ago. In recent years, many Repug conspira-liars have gone back to UFOs almost as an aside from their usual conspiracy tack. There is an assumption of the consequent in all this. If “they” can fake the Moon landings, or conceal alien contact for 70 years, it would be easy for them to stage a false flag school shooting, or invent a fictitious disease to bring people under control.

Yes, yes, so much THIS. Conspiracy theories are like gateway drugs; if you let yourself get sucked in even a little bit, then you find yourself able to believe more and more ridiculous claims, because your sense of plausibility has been broken down. I saw the appeal of it when I briefly dabbled in JFK conspiracy, and it took me several years to understand how subtly dangerous it was.

It’s as simple as that. They will never vote for someone of the opposite party, even when their own nominee is a fascist intent on ending democracy, because they’ll ultimately benefit from the ending of democracy. Rusty has engaged in voter suppression efforts even as he drew the line at not committing felonies on behalf of Trump.

…….There is hope though.

These are the Germans who supported Hitler and the Italians who supported Mussolini. For some, it may be that the steady exposure to hatred from media like Fox has poisoned their minds and blinded them to reality and compassion. But it does seem like most of them were searching for someone who allowed them to spew the hatred that was always within them and in Trump they found such a leader — someone who let them be who they always were.

On our first date my (now ex-) GF asked if I believed the moon landing were faked. I told her that I try to keep an open mind but that does not mean that I jump on the next best conspiracy that comes along whenever questions or inconsistencies arise.

She was also big into UFO stuff but otherwise a very intelligent and well educated woman. She was politically conservative and did not like Obama, Hillary or Biden one bit. I was able to live with that until around the end of 2020 when she really started getting into the whacko conspiracy theories: China is funding BLM, Hillary had Seal Team Six assassinated to hide the fact that they fudged the Bin Laden Operation, Mike Pence is part of the Pizza Parlor Pedophile Ring, etc.

We had a big disagreement over the outcome of the election, and January 6th (which she insisted was an Antifa false flag) but it was when she started quoting the QAnon theory about there being 50,000 Chinese troops stationed across the Canadian border that I told her that it is just impossible to continue a relationship with someone who inhabits a parallel reality.

We have not seen each other since. We still keep in touch but do not discuss politics at all.

“Yesterday’s ruling striking down a Maine law that blocked taxpayer dollars from funding religious school tuition furthered a transformation decades in the making. Since John Roberts became chief justice in 2005, the court has ruled in favor of religious organizations in orally argued cases 83 percent of the time. That is far more than any court in the past seven decades — all of which were led by chief justices who, like Roberts, were appointed by Republican presidents.”

Campus Crusaders for Christ used to come around using that argument back in the late 70’s.

I told them to fuck off back then and continue to tell people that America’s greatness and exceptionalism as a nation have a lot to do with the fact that our Founding Fathers possessed the Divine Wisdom to separate Church and State.
