So we hit 40 C today, 104 F.

We also had a pretty good breeze, which felt like sticking your head into a gas clothes dryer. Well, your whole body, to be honest.

Lunch today was a birthday crumpet and a cup of tea at a shop in Ligonier, PA.

Topping on the crumpet was a buffalo cream cheese and bleu cheese.

We should recognize the reactions that Klepper found.

It’s similar to what one gets when trying to confront creationists with actual science.

That is not coincidental.

From the second we’re introduced to Tom Swift, it becomes clear the theme of the series is Black Excellence.

In the first episode of The CW’s new series, we are constantly reminded how ridiculously wealthy the Swifts are. This family of Black geniuses is responsible for most of the world’s technological advancements, and they’re not afraid to let you know it.

What makes all this so special is that in the original early 1900s books, Tom Swift is a blond-haired, blue-eyed, white All-American young man. The books were first published in 1910, so some of them featured extremely racist portrayals of Black people. They were either wild savages or children who couldn’t function without white saviors. There was no in-between.

Fast forward 100 years and now Tom Swift is a successful Black, gay inventor whose family is set to take the world into space. (Yes, even fictional billionaires are trapped in a space race.) Swift Enterprises is ready to send a ship to Saturn, with Tom’s father, Barton, manning the mission. Before he leaves, Barton tells Tom that he’s disappointed in his “sensitive” son and Tom won’t be named acting CEO while he’s gone. If you’ve ever watched TV, you know where this is going.

Well, apparently my name and visage has spread among the John MacArthur cult oops, the Grace Community Church attendees. Way to prove that I got to you all. :)

Grace Community Church is running a “Puritan Conference” in early October (even if the stupid background at puritanconference dot org has a picture of Martin Luther and some modern dude in suit & tie as “Puritans”). It looks like a cash cow: $299/head. I think I’m going to dress up as Mary Dyer, one of the Quaker Martyrs who was executed by the Puritan Massachusetts Bay Colony leadership. You can read more about her here: en.wikipedia.org

I was out of loose tea. And the shop I visited is run by the sister of a good friend of mine from college. And it was a good day for a drive up into that area. Need to remember to bring my camera and light hiking gear since there are a number of nice parks, trails, and such all over that area. Plus I’ve never actually visited Fort Ligonier.

Guy sounds like an idiot.

Leaving firearms accessible to children. And leaving expensive collectables accessible to children.

Even if they were demilled, giving a little kid a 4lb metal hammer doesn’t seem particularly wise.

Seems ignorant or performative to me.

The pistols shown appear to be almost all “cap and ball” pistols. If original they would date to around the time of the American Civil War. (1860+- 20 years).

The three components of the ammunition would be loaded separately rather than all being contained in a single cartridge. And they would be designed to fire the lower pressure black powder rather than modern smokeless powder.

(Plus, if they were original, I am not sure how much the century and a half of age and how they were used over that period, in addition to the period metallurgy would affect whether the pistol could even handle the pressure it was originally designed for.)

Additionally, they would likely be single action. Which means that the hammer would have to be cocked before the trigger could be pulled to fire the pistol.

An election-year illusion. One crafted to defuse a political issue before November, allowing Dems to boast about how they “passed something” that was “bipartisan” while Repubs can tell folks back home that the bill does virtually nothing to restrict their ability to keep building arsenals in their homes.

So, what you’re saying is that politicians can be influenced by elections.

I’m saying that we’ve been tossed table scraps yet again and been told that this is a “win” because it’s “bipartisan.” That the only sacrifice that was made by Repubs was just allowing the bill to come to a vote. In exchange, they got to water the bill down so far that it’s virtually useless.

My thought is that the US sent them to help Ukraine get their grain shipments out into international waters, where the Russians wouldn’t dare to shoot at them. Russia’s Black Sea fleet isn’t so large or powerful that a handful of US patrol boats wouldn’t do some damage in capable hands.

Index: The “Supreme” Court
How SCOTUS was captured, why it matters, and how to set it free.
gregolear.substack.com

The blinking-red danger with a captured Court is that, while we attribute its capture to the “Koch Brothers” as a sort of metonym, we don’t really know who captured it. I mean, it’s called dark money for a reason. Donors don’t have to disclose their identities, not in any meaningful way. For all we know, the Federalist Society is funded by the Vnesheconombank, or the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund, or the Princely House of Thurn und Taxis. Are we sure Leonard Leo gets his financing from the Kochs, and not Semion Mogilevich? Regulatory capture of the Supreme Court seems like a mobster move; shouldn’t the onus be on Leo to show that he’s not bankrolled by the Bratva?

My thought is that the US sent them to help Ukraine get their grain shipments out into international waters, where the Russians wouldn’t dare to shoot at them. Russia’s Black Sea fleet isn’t so large or powerful that a handful of US patrol boats wouldn’t do some damage in capable hands.

Hell, I’d think that some cruise missiles with conventional warheads would send the Black Sea fleet to the bottom so fast, Admiral Tōgō’s ghost would be chuckling in amusement.

“The former Wisconsin Supreme Court justice hired to investigate President Joe Biden’s victory in the battleground state testified Thursday that he routinely deleted records, and deactivated a personal email account, even after receiving open records requests,” the AP reports.

….
[Republican Assembly Speaker Robin] Vos hired Gableman a year ago under pressure from Donald Trump to investigate the former president’s loss to Biden by just under 21,000 votes in Wisconsin. The investigation has cost taxpayers about $900,000 so far. Biden’s victory has survived two recounts, multiple lawsuits, a nonpartisan audit and a review by a conservative law firm.

where’s the Rs calling for like 15 new investigations?

I think the Chinese have been propping up the Russians.

The Russian ruble has rebounded from crippling economic sanctions imposed on Moscow following the invasion of Ukraine and is now at its strongest in more than seven years — earning it the distinction of being the best-performing currency in the world so far this year.

The ruble was trading at 54.47 to the US dollar on Thursday — a far cry from the 139 to the dollar that the currency fell to in March, when the US and the European Union sanctioned the Kremlin for its invasion of Ukraine.

Since the start of the year, the ruble has soared 40% against the dollar — outperforming every other currency in the world.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has touted the ruble’s robust recovery as proof that his economy has successfully withstood the onslaught of Western sanctions.

“The idea was clear: crush the Russian economy violently,” Putin told an economic forum in St. Petersburg last week. “They did not succeed. Obviously, that didn’t happen.”

The Russian economy can be highly elf-sufficient if they do not measure their standards of living and technology against the rest of the world. We overlook that fact.

They will always have enough to eat and enough fuel to burn, unlike Europe, which is dependent on imports of both.

Today’s a good reminder that there’s been no progress on who leaked the Roe draft opinion. Weird how that happened. It’s as though no one cares one of the justices released it by and through staff or their spouse.

All the talk about that justice being forced to resign from the Court is also silent - because the GOP knows damned well that it was likely Thomas, and they need Thomas to end Roe and a whole load of other rights that right wingers want to dismantle.

This argument was made for the infrastructure bill and the ACA.

I totally get it, it’s not any major change in anything. But it’s a change. It just signaled that gun laws can be passed. And Republicans know it as well, which is why people like Greitens (?sp) decided they could threaten other Republicans.

I’m sure Shannon Watts and BrooklynDadDefiant know that this isn’t going to change a whole lot in absolute terms. But it’s passage is a milestone. How many school massacres couldn’t get any bill through?

We can either argue that it’s an ineffective bill, or we can argue that we can do something about our gun problem. Remember what running away from the ACA did to Republicans?

re: #158 Belafon

This latest gun bill is a step forward, but likely to be undone by the same SCOTUS that will take up the law the moment it is signed into law as someone will question the constitutionality of restricting right to bear arms.

The core problem at this point isn’t Democrats’ willingness to pass laws that help improve health and safety for all Americans, but the GOP obstructionism is backstopped by a right wing extremist SCOTUS.

Its something, and that’s better than nothing, IMO. Just getting Republicans to vote for billions in funding for mental health treatment, even if its only because they are trying to blame anything other than guns for gun homicides, is good in and of itself. This country desperately needs more mental health treatment.

That’s exactly what it means. State laws that outlawed abortion that were previously suspended due to Roe/Casey are back in effect.

State laws that would take effect on the overturn of Roe are now in effect.

They’ve just criminalized abortion. This is an unprecedented assault on women’s rights, health care, and reproductive rights. It’s as extreme as it gets.

Trump/McConnell has criminalized women’s right to access to health care and reproductive care in particular. This court packed with right wing extremists is going to roll back decades of progress, and Thomas and Alito are going to drive the nation into a dystopian future where white guys get to rape women and force women to carry to term, and get away with it.

This isn’t pro life. It’s a forced birth extremism, and the next step will be for suits against states that protect the right to abortion by claiming that life is sacred regardless and overrule state’s rights.

This decision is predictably as extreme as it gets and ignores jurisprudence and stare decisis. Same as yesterday’s decision on firearms and concealed carry.

Well, today as predicted officially marks the end of the judicial precedent as a concept of the US legal system and the new order of Judicial edict under a corrupted Republican manufactured SCOTUS is now in full effect.

We are no longer any sort of real democracy. We are now fully a Hybrid Regime - defined as a developing autocracy using the trappings of democracy as cover. We are a broken democracy and with Republicans positioning partisans in key electoral counting positions and election poll policing/thugs we are set for full autocracy starting in 2025.

general strikes, underground railroads, US Military firing on US citizens, etc. this is not the 1800’s…, this is going to happen again now .

Now, Roe is done. And all the other substantive due process cases are likewise on the chopping block with Alito and Thomas providing the guidelines for how to end all those civil, voting, and women’s rights.

The RW answer is to treat women like property: teach girls to recognize when their father’s/husband’s property rights are being unduly threatened by anyone’s advances, whereupon they have the right to use 2A solutions to enforce those rights.

Where I am in the Deep South, the closest blue state (using the 2020 election map as a reference) is Virginia and that’s an over 12 hour drive away. For starters, what about making big noise about recommending females stay away from states which have outlawed abortion, akin to state dept advisories, and warning foreigners that the US justice system has to be seen as compromised?
Like, for the latter, bring up that corrupt judge and pals in TX that still do patent trolling, and other abuses of the system?

Something we will soon see just happened in Brazil: a judge put a pregnant eleven year old rape victim in jail to make sure she can’t get an abortion.

Every pregnancy is an impending threat of injury. That judge should be in jail.

Money and corporations also have more rights than women. Women have no rights that a white man is bound to respect. This is the tragic result of the failure to ratify the ERA.

Corpses, too.

I expect that the criminal offense of “trafficking” women across state lines for the purpose of performing an abortion on her will eventually be upheld by this court. In the meantime, states like Texas will allow people to sue those who aid or abet women in obtaining legal out-of-state abortions for damages.

And this court has made clear that to them “settled law” does not exist.

My problem is that yes, Twitter isn’t real life. But at this point, neither is the media coverage of things like politics, but both increasingly effect the real world results and consequences to near impenetrability. Look at Biden’s and Dems’ general approval ratings and how tanked they are solely on the basis of “Biden is a super-failure because we said so!” How major twitter accounts are gaining influence with the GOP and real world radicals in a feedback loop of stochastic terrorism.

Something happened along the way for a demented soul like Clarence Thomas to actually follow through on his promise to commit himself to the cause of outright racist, entitled Republican assholes. He is a true believer, or at least he thinks he is. More likely he is fueled by an inner rage caught in between the opposing sides of being a black man in America and desire to “truly be American”.

In his wrath, protected by a lifetime cloaked in Justice robes and seclusion from outside opposing views, he has steadily through the years enabled and legally armed forces that would otherwise either wish to deport (“back to Africa”), imprison, or kill him and others who are not lily-white male entitled assholes.

Thomas’ malevolence cannot be understated. Evil does exist. It has existed in the entire Republican Party and it’s voters for a long time now.

The true Republican base, the local gentry, discovered that they couldn’t make money from abortion after all and, much worse, it empowered the poor by giving poor women a right and an option that the rich had always had. Beyond that, the burgeoning Dominionist theocrat movement needed a wedge issue to replace opposition to civil rights, which they finally recognized was a long term loser.

Not bots, but replies and retweets from several activist accounts who have severely shown their ass as of late, it feels like.

I remember I was confused the first time I heard a Protestant evangelical ranting against abortion, circa 1976. “Huh, what? Have you gone Catholic on us?”
Now we know the truth, evangelical leaders had made a calculated decision to throw in with the otherwise hated Catholics on abortion.

I would argue that November 8, 2016 was the beginning of the decline.

America had some minor ups and downs, but it was holding on after 9/11/2001, nothing that was not reparable with the next election. But this most recent assault on Civil Rights will take decades/generations to overcome

I am not a fan of expanding the court at this time. If the GOP takes over the Senate in November, the extra positions will not be filled until there is a GOP president. McConnell demonstrated this in 2016 — and then when a GOP President is elected (like in 2024), we will be faced not with 6-3 but with 10-3 decisions. The 50-50 Senate allows Biden a precarious “majority” to get a little done — but not to get anything bold like this, especially in the brief time till the next election. If something good happens in November, we can then rethink this. What would be even better is for Thomas and Alito somehow to be forced from the bench between now and the fall.

It is infuriating that SCOTUS is getting additional protection while they take away our rights one at at time. IANAL but IMHO based on the decisions this week, the Roberts Court is now firmly ensconced as the second worst court ever (Taney’s Dred Scott decision is enough to make the Taney Court the worst in our history).

We won’t be able to do the expansion until Manchin and Sinema are made irrelevant, so it will only happen if Democrats are in charge of Congress.

Dems need to hold all 50 seats they have right now, plus add three* more to fully neutralize Manchin and Sinema and abolish the filibuster.

It seems to me that the best opportunities to do this are PA (Fetterman), OH (Ryan), and even Wisconsin, where the Dems on the primary ballot are polling favorably against Johnson.

“These are the stakes,” as LBJ began in the famous “Daisy Girl” ad. He was talking about nuclear war, of course, but the quote ends with him saying, “…or we must die.”

We all know that Griswold, Lawrence, and Obergefell will fall next. This SCOTUS will probably support a less ham-handed coup attempt than what was attempted in 2020. If we don’t change the direction of the court, we (America) will die.

*Three to prepare for the possibility that Manchin might switch parties.

Inspired by H.L . Mencken and Mark Twain, I once said that Republican politicians would cheerfully come out in favor of incest, cannibalism or human sacrifice if they thought it would keep them in power or make money for their contributors.
We can check off human sacrifice, with their overtly democidal response to Covid, and incest, with their anti-abortion absolutism.

When, and how, will they start legitimizing cannibalism? A response to climate change perhaps, in lieu of pollution control? “IT’S PEOPLE! IT’S PEOPLE”

Watch Live: Protests Erupt at Supreme Court After Abortion Case Ruling

News updates: Seattle reacts to Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade ruling and what it means for abortion locally

In Washington, state law ensures abortion rights. That law will remain in effect, regardless of Friday’s ruling. Still, political winds can change, and lawmakers or voters could conceivably pass a new state law restricting abortion.

Meanwhile, the Guttmacher Institute, a research organization focusing on reproductive rights, estimates Washington could see a 385% increase in abortion patients coming from states banning or severely restricting abortion in the wake of Roe.

Money and corporations also have more rights than women. Women have no rights that a white man is bound to respect. This is the tragic result of the failure to ratify the ERA.

Under this court, the ERA would have provided NO protection. After all the 15th amendment did not provide any protection against voter restrictions that prevented blacks from voting in the South for decades or that protect their rights to vote today against an onslaught of new legislation targeting them.

385%. So basically four fold.

Not to nit pick the math, but it’s almost 5x.
100 increased by 385% is 485.

And just like the BLM demonstrations of 2020, there will be shit-stirrers out there who cause violence and incite riots, with the intention of blaming it on antifa and pro-choice advocates. You know it will happen. They’ve been planning this for decades; BLM was a practice run. This is their Superb Owl.

All it would mean is that men would have no right to an abortion either.

I think if they could do that, illicit drugs wouldn’t be delivered via USPS as they are today. The post office is already a major drug trafficker. Last I saw, which was over a year ago, every single Internet-based drug dealer ships USPS.

None of them lied. It was precedent. It was important.

And they overturned it anyway. They ignored precedent, settled law, and a woman’s right and agency over their bodies to institute a ban on abortion.

They aren’t pro life. They’re forced birth extremists, and they revel in their extremism.

Thomas and Roberts likewise are fine with this decision, and Thomas thinks they don’t go far enough.

Well, looks like the dog finally caught the car. What next? Oh, wait, looks like Thomas has already laid it out: The next target is LGBTQ rights.

What’s next? I think that the first Sivita who dies from this ruling, her guy with their already born six kids - and a bunch of legal, carry concealed guns - is going to go SCOTUS hunting.

Some of them lied about other things. Kavanaugh saying under oath that the devil’s triangle was a drinking game was perjury.

This is war. We have to fight, but fight smart. In particular, don’t give the forced birth gun humpers anything to shoot at!

EXCEPT:

In actual military combat, there are many instances of deception and luck combining to induce enemy troops to fire on each other. It isn’t common or easy, of course, but it should be a hell of a lot easier and more likely when dealing with poorly trained and undisciplined vigilantes. It will probably happen spontaneously, without outside intervention, but some very subtle pressure when the opportunity presents itself might not hurt.

442
Dangerman  Jun 24, 2022 • 10:29:53am
This decision is inconsistent with what Justices Gorsuch and Kavanaugh said in their testimony and their meetings with me, where they both were insistent on the importance of supporting long-standing precedents that the country has relied upon.”

— Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME), quoted by the New York Times, adding that “throwing out a precedent overnight that the country has relied upon for half a century is not conservative. It is a sudden and radical jolt to the country that will lead to political chaos, anger, and a further loss of confidence in our government.”

So is she surprised, concerned or just performing?

No guarantee with McConnel and Company that even that would have worked out.

She would have retired while Reid was till Majority Leader. But I suspect if it were RBG rather than Scalia who passed away in 2016, even McConnell may very well have allowed a replacement.

Which goes to prove that, despite all the whining, it would have made no difference at all if RGB had retired.
