re: #303 Hecuba’s daughter

It requires 60 votes — so a large majority, not just a real majority.

No, it doesn’t.

It needs 51 votes to remove the “filibuster” from the rules.

IF YOU DO NOT VOTE DEMOCRATIC, THE GOP WILL TAKE AWAY ABORTION RIGHTS FOR THE REST OF THE WOMEN IN AMERICA

Now seeing liberals on Twitter bashing the hell out of AOC, and I am NOT down with this at all.

She proposed a real course of action that makes good sense, and they’re attacking her for “suppressing the vote.” What the fuck.

re: #12 wrenchwench

My brother and SiL just left their church because they found it too “woke” for their views.

And my oldest sister and her whole family joined the Mormons some years back;

“The [LDS] Church allows for possible exceptions for its members when:

-Pregnancy results from rape or incest, or
-A competent physician determines that the life or health of the mother is in serious jeopardy, or
-A competent physician determines that the fetus has severe defects that will not allow the baby to survive beyond birth.

The problem is Manchin and Sinema. They’ve got their head firmly embedded up their asses and frankly, someone needs to give ‘em the pimphand and lay down the law.

Oh, right. Not sarcasm—I literally saw that in one twitter thread: “the mother had her chance at life, so I’d choose the unborn child” (like it’s going to birth itself).

Hey, Charles, I’m trying to post another installment of the train songs. As far as I can tell, it’s identical to the others I posted, and the preview looks good, but I can’t post it, and I can’t save it as a draft. Whichever one I try, the page acquires little green checkmarks, but it’s neither saved nor posted.

Any ideas?

Also, even if his point is bad precedent should be overturned, it is totally inappropriate. When has SCOTUS ever reversed an individual right it recognized in a prior ruling?

I can imagine states like Texas to require vehicle emissions ABOVE a certain threshold, say 1985 levels for just spite’s sake. The more smoky smog, the better. And those pesky clean water regs must simply go away.

Well, there’s a lot going on when you post videos - there are calls to the YouTube API and other external services, and sometimes they take longer to execute because of network conditions. There’s really no way to predict.

Google will allow employees to move between states in response to the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. In an email obtained by The Verge, the company’s chief people officer, Fiona Cicconi, said workers could “apply for relocation without justification,” and that those managing the requests would be “aware of the situation.” We’ve reached out to Google to find out if the company amended its relocation policy in response to Friday’s decision. Cicconi also reminded workers Google’s employee benefits plan covers medical procedures that aren’t available in the state where they live and work.

Google tells workers they can relocate ‘without justification’ following Supreme Court decision (Engadget)

Problem: what is “reproductive rights”?

It’s purely an interpretive exercise and one that any Senator can get around or manipulate.

The bottom line is that the Senate is anti-democratic and there is no way to escape that simple observation.

But try to get any politician, any Democratic Senator, to stand up and say the Senate has to go away or be fundamentally changed.

These things are now too wired into our identity as a nation.

This is why these same old issues seem to never go away.

This is a hard problem and I don’t know how to fix it.

Every problem we are facing requires a constitutional amendment. I’ve been saying to not rely on stare decisis or both sides acting in good faith for years. Do the work to get it done, and keep trying until it works.

Passing a law that will just get overturned almost immediately is a waste of effort and performative for the mass of idiots in America that don’t know how anything works.

Democracy is constant work.

This SCOTUS has broken democracy on a more basic level than simply writing new amendments and laws. They have taken it upon themselves to be the final arbiters of translating every single notion of every sentence into a twisted wreckage known as Conservative ideology, including rubbing “well-regulated milita” completely out with an eraser. Scalia’s judicial diatribe can be summed up like this- “there is no precedent we cannot undo. There are no other interpretations of Founder intent other than what we say there are.” They are making a new government ruled by edict without a Constitution at all.

The Constitution is done. Just like that. All they needed was a corrupted SCOTUS and a Republican Senate. And just like that American democracy has been hacked and hijacked.

99
Jack Burton in Mactified Forshion  Jun 25, 2022 • 2:57:40pm

Realistic options right now.

Full court press for years or decades for a slate of Constitutional Amendments which cover all the issues that are making life hell here.

OR

Start impeaching Supreme Court judges for perjury (practically every right winger other than Roberts), seditious conspiracy (Thomas), and overt partisanship (All of the right wingers except maybe Roberts again… and yes this is actually a valid reason for impeachment of members of the judiciary), and expand the court to 13 to match the district numbers.

Get the idiot apolitical people to realize democracy is work, and convince all the idiot lefty purity ponies that helped put us here in the first place (Hillary is a corporatist warmonger) to grow up and start voting strategically.

Admit Puerto Rico as a state. DC is a non-starter and there’s reasons it’s not a state.

OR

Civil war.

None of these are easy, will either take years or will get *a lot* of people killed. These are your choices.

Not to be that guy but for every time someone rants about “well-regulated militia” first thing that comes to mind is, the next line says “the people” and not “the militia” from the line above. It don’t take right wing pretzel logic to take “the people” to mean everyone.

This is and always has been a super weak sauce argument. Attack it on it’s applicability to 21st century reality, rather than an asinine semantics argument. The second you make “the people” not mean “the people” it opens a can of worms that you don’t want open.

I will repeat this as long as I have to, when the Supreme Court said in 1937 that the Social Security Act was “unconstitutional”, FDR didn’t ask people to vote harder in the next election, he told the Court he’d add more justices until they backed off, which they did.

Manchin and Sinema could be loyal 100% voting with Biden Democrats and it wouldn’t matter. They aren’t the whole problem, just a small part. An insult to injury.

There are still 50 Republicans, 48 Democrats, and 2 independents who caucus with the Democrats. The only thing we can get passed is the budget and spending bills, and judge confirmations.

Any real change to the Senate requires a Constitutional amendment — and that’s not going to happen. There apparently, though, is an attempt to repeal the 17th Amendment to take away the right of the citizens of the state to elect their Senators, and revert to the appointment by the state legislature — a proposal that would make the Senate even less representative of the nation as a whole.

Unlike the 2nd amendments strange wording, the 19th is very clear:

“The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.

Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.”

We do still have to worry about poll taxes returning and similar shenanigans but simply based on gender they can’t do it until/unless they get their constitutional convention in which case it’s all-out war in America like the former Yugoslavia anyway because that will trigger it.

Here’s why progressives (and their adjacents) seem to not be making political headway: the religious right are baby machines.

Now, not all the Duggar children will have 19 kids (like their parents.)

The 15th amendment adopted in 1870 was equally clear, with no ambiguity:

Section 1
The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.

Section 2
The Congress shall have the power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.

Yet Southern States routinely denied blacks the right to vote until the 1960’s. It required an Constitutional amendment outlawing the poll tax and the 1965 VRA to finally implement this amendment. Then the Roberts Court allowed the Florida poll tax to take effect.

So let’s not pretend that direct, unambiguous wording in the Constitution cannot be undermined by policies and rules implemented by malevolent actors and malicious decisions from depraved justices on SCOTUS.

The “Youth Vote” is 1 or 2 election cycles, then they are adults. Whether or not they act like or not is another story. I’ve never felt it was worth worrying about or trying to rely on it. They never have and never will save us, until 4-8 years later.

re: #142 Barefoot Grin

The rise of dudebro-ism ( I’m trying to think of a better word) among young males has me thinking that the next generation is not going to do to well.

If one looks at the outpouring of the most idiotic, juvenile posts on the mass of online social media, one can see this movement.

Gamergate was the first really big explosion of this that got wider attention.

Since then we have seen this spread.

The toxic fandom problem is largely this dudebroism.

Masculinity is a genetic programming trait that cannot be easily managed by social pressures. It can be managed, but not easily.

In some ways this is the heart of the Islamist violence, whether AQ or ISIS.

Young men being exploited because of their need to prove something.

This is why Elon Musk is seen as a hero - he’s the uber male for the 21st century: a billionaire who can say stupid things and be praised for them.

Some time back, when I was first getting on my soapbox (here) about worldview collapse, I brought up this need to have a new humanism movement.

We need that because we have to counter the (genetic programming) urge towards violence and domination expressed by males, especially young males as they are exiting puberty.

In the old days the church/king simply hired these guys to go die somewhere. Whoever survived could come back and be humbled a bit (unless it was a noble who decided he ought to be king but that is another problem.)

49 years ago today, June 25, 1973

With 85 million households watching on TV, former WH counsel John Dean reads his explosive 60,000 word opening statement which implicates Nixon, himself & other top WH officials in a huge coverup of Watergate & more.

That happened on the day I turned 19. I must have been watching the hearing a bit, but I don’t have memories of it other than being glad that Nixon was getting nailed. I had already cast my first presidential vote for McGovern and the full D ticket.

How this is all going to turn out I can’t say. Pretty sure that it’s not going to be fixed or made worse in the short term.

The number of church-going religious people in the US has been falling off a cliff for 2 decades. This might accelerate that.

We still don’t know how the Jan 6 Commission and any possible criminal cases that follow will pan out. I’m much more optimistic about some form of justice coming form that than most people here are. It seems every day that’s on TV the number of people who want something done jumps by several points, and the DoJs actions are starting to be less in the background and more on TV.

Regardless, Trump wont run in 2024. That’s not what we need to worry about. He’s living off running skimming a PAC, and wants to/has to continue to do so because he’s a broke joke and his wealth has always been pixie dust and bullshit between grifts. He will find some health reason, real or exaggerated to decline to run.

Now, not all the Duggar children will have 19 kids (like their parents.)

Don’t forget that Trump could also threaten to run third-party in order to keep the GOP in line.

That being said, I don’t think he’ll run in 2024; campaigning for POTUS is hard work and at his core, he’s a lazy fucker. He’d much rather just kick back, occasionally do one of his rallies to hustle the rubes for $$$ and pose as the GOPs kingmaker and have everyone fly down to Mar-a-Lago to kiss the ring his fat ass.

Yes, once it’s born and becomes a baby, then it is a person. Until then, the ONLY person is the woman.

Not sure. My reaction is that she wants warehouses full of white babies available for sale/adoption to continue a white race majority - bein’ that she’s into Hitler and all that.

In fact, white women for the most part will be able to get abortions; women of color, who are disproportionally poor, will not (unless they get lots of help from the rest of us). So much for their white supremacist dreams.

I gotta disagree. He has settled on the grift, and it requires constant public events and requests for money. Whether he runs in 2024 is beside the point. The grift requires his constant public appearances.

It’s what he told Pence in ‘16: You run foreign and domestic policy, I’ll Make America Great Again.

That’s it. That was the deal. The idea is no different today. That’s the grift.

You’ve got a good point there - I think that Trump gets off on the kind of public adulation he receives from his public events. That feeds his ego and that might be just as important to him as the money, quite honestly.

I agree. He will run. He wants the power and command of the center stage. Who knows what bargain he has made with the Russians to complete our destruction? If he is alive, he will contend for the GOP nomination. And his cult is out there declaring everything an insurrection — including Roe protests and the Colbert crew overstaying in the building — minimizing the crimes of this administration. JD Vance called Trump the American Hitler and that is exactly what he is. Hitler never gave up until his nation was reduced to rubble; that is the fate that awaits us.

It’s just like that well-known quote from Barry Goldwater…

“Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the [Republican] party, and they’re sure trying to do so, it’s going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can’t and won’t compromise. I know, I’ve tried to deal with them.”

Because of our own reactionary politics tearing us down we are naturally fixated on the problems of our own country.

But things are not good elsewhere, even leaving Russia’s invasion of Ukraine aside:

Ethiopia’s Invisible Ethnic Cleansing

For more than a year and a half, a largely invisible campaign of ethnic cleansing has played out in Ethiopia’s northern region of Tigray. Older people, women, and children have been loaded onto trucks and forced out of their villages and hometowns. Men have been herded into overcrowded detention sites, where many have died of disease, starvation, or torture. In total, several hundred thousand Tigrayans have been forcibly uprooted because of their ethnicity.

How much of the 2 billion bribe that Prince Bonesaw gave Jared actually ended up in Trump’s pocket? We will see what the landscape will look like in 2024. Trump worked hard to stay in power when he lost; he knows that thanks to the outrageous EC he lost by only about 40,000 votes, even after allowing a pandemic to rage through this nation and (at the time) kill hundreds of thousands of Americans. Jack Burton may be right — but I fear that if he remains in good health, he will try again.

Of course, SCOTUS decisions may upend everything.

Trump will run because that’s the only way to keep the grift going, the only way to keep himself shielded from prosecution for his crimes. But he’ll also drag out the formal announcement as long as he can to keep as much money possible outside the oversight of the FEC. Even if he has no intention of running, he will maintain the illusion as long as he possibly can in order to keep the GQP under his thumb. The other candidates will purposefully avoid criticizing him or even explicitly seek his endorsement just to gain a possible edge should he not run.

It’s not just about controlling women, Mary Miller made that clear tonight. It’s about control, period. It’s about the increasingly isolated, majority white evangelicals getting scared shitless that they’re on the cusp of permanently being rendered a minority and the view that the only way to avoid that is to make it impossible for white women in this country to do anything but have as many kids as possible. It’s why they cannot and will not ever agree to anything but a total ban on abortion, because any dead women are viewed as “acceptable losses” in a crusade to ensure a permanent white majority in America.

I must admit that my Roman Catholic upbringing plus all the Campus Crusade for Christ assholes going around the dormitory halls did a lot to put me off Christianity completely.

It was not until much later that I encountered Christians who just quietly live their faith without proselytizing. It showed me that there were some redeeming features to the religion.

Not all of them. Some genuinely believe that they’re the first person to ever come to the front desk and tell me that we need to clean our rooms better. Or we need to be doing more to maintain the appliances. Or that pest issues are something that are easily solved in a hotel with dozens of rooms housing utter slobs.

That last one is key because I very rarely have had a guest who stayed for longer than a night get complimented by the housekeeping staff for the cleanliness of their room upon checkout.

“On the heels of their greatest victory, antiabortion activists are eager to capitalize on their momentum by enshrining constitutional abortion bans, pushing Congress to pass a national prohibition, blocking abortion pills, and limiting people’s ability to get abortions across state lines,” the Washington Post reports.

Donald Trump “is anxious about what the end of Roe, and the flood of extreme Republican state-level anti-abortion laws it will unleash, will mean for the GOP’s electoral prospects — and for his own,” Rolling Stone reports.

Said one source who spoke to Trump: “He keeps shitting all over his greatest accomplishment. When you speak to him, it’s the response of someone fearing the backlash and fearing the politics of what happens when conservatives actually get what they want.”

The source added: “I do not think he’s enjoying the moment as much as many of his supporters are, to be honest with you.”

if this reporting is true it’s because he thinks it’ll will hurt his electoral chances.
he doesnt care about the law or the win, just how it affects him.

Expect any GOP controlled House and Senate to pass a “live begins at conception” law which would effectively ban all abortion and many forms of contraception.

Followed by a “marriage is between a biological man and biological woman - their birth genders, no surgical/hormonal tampering allowed” law

again: IF YOU VOTE GOP, YOU ARE VOTING FOR PEOPLE WHO WANT TO IMLEMENT ALL THESE THINGS!!!!

“Time for Collins and Democrats to walk the walk and pass a national right to abortion law” Robert Reich
Jun 25

I don’t know about you, but I’m tired of lawmakers trying to cover their backsides when the Supreme Court justices they voted to confirm turn out as bad as the rest of us thought. Today, senators Susan Collins and Joe Manchin say they feel betrayed by Kavanaugh and Gorsuch who, they say, promised during their confirmation hearings that they’d honor Roe v. Wade.

Other Democrats in Congress are expressing outrage at what the Supreme Court just did.

If Susan Collins and Joe Manchin feel betrayed, and others feel outraged, all have an easy fix: They can carve out a reproductive rights exemption to the filibuster, then enact national abortion rights. They could do it Monday.

Time for the defenders of reproductive rights to act when they have the power, instead of posturing.

Well, this is some weird shit….

South African police are investigating the deaths of at least 20 people at a nightclub in the coastal town of East London early Sunday morning.

It is unclear what led to the deaths of the young people, who were reportedly attending a party to celebrate the end of winter school exams.

Local newspaper Daily Dispatch reported that bodies were strewn across tables and chairs without any visible signs of injuries.

apnews.com

Apparently, the death toll is now up to 24. I wonder if they drank tainted alcohol or something? We had a case here in Czech Republic back in 2012 where 38 people died in a matter of a few days from drinking bathtub gin contaminated with methanol.

I’ve lost count over the years of those with what I call the “laundry list,” i.e. the people who have spent their stay compiling a list of complaints (many of them petty) that they only unleash towards the end of their stay in order to make the staff appear negligent/incompetent in a clear effort to get compensation of some kind.

There are “pro consumer” websites and gurus who recommend doing exactly this for just the reason you described (to try and get a discount or freebie from the store/hotel/restaurant etc.)

Democrats should make the case that the court is now a tool of rightwing extremism.
That’s why it needs to be reformed and made accountable.
The court does not have any ombudsman like IGs in the executive branch.
It is not subject to FOIA.
Recusal is left to the discretion of the justices.
The lifetime appointment process is being abused with unqualified judges and justices getting in when they are not even 35 years old.

The pretzel logic used in the gun case and dobbs means they can go after anything.
That’s why this is everyone’s problem.
Not just abortion adjacent, LGBTq etc.
ObamaCare again
and Why not social security?
Or “school prayer” or creationism

Fundamentalist Protestantism is based on White Supremacy.

Fundamentalist religious conviction invariably is really worship of one’s own race and culture and the diminishing or elimination of everyone else. The gods and goddesses, the myths and histories, eschatology and ceremonies may differ but one constant thread is the natural superiority of oneself against all others.

How DHS uses pineapple on pizza to explain how disinformation is propogated. It’s an excellent infographic.

Understanding Foreign Interference in 5 Steps

To date, we have no evidence of Russia (or any nation) actively carrying out information operations against pizza toppings. This infographic is an ILLUSTRATION of how information operations have been carried out in the past to exploit divisions in the United States.

So… Over on a chat, a pro-lifer asked in DM how much trauma a rape causes (he is on the fence about allowing rape victims abortions, officially nope). I dropped this screed at him.

re: #326 Ace Rothstein

I’m all in with Ron DeSantis.

DeSantis is running against Trump and is likely to win IMO. I live in Florida, where the DeSantis reign of utter corruption is supreme. DeSantis is the dictator American fascists have been looking for. He is every bit the autocrat the far right wing has been looking for without the morally depraved family or circus sideshow Trump provided in the past. But he still does represent the very worst of Trump’s racist and anti-science inclinations, all without the clown shoes.

DeSantis is also much more politically savvy with recent pivots to the left on policy such as siding with the solar industry against the established power companies. His veto of recent legislation sided with those that want established net metering rules instead of power companies gaining yet another chokehold over solar adoption in this state. Very savvy move on DeSantis’ part. But don’t be fooled. He is not on any side but his own self-promotion and his utter disdain for liberal thought, facts, evidence and science. His recent pivots are nothing but a smokescreen for what could be a very bitter period of time in America should he win in 2024.

Does DeSantis have the “charisma” or maybe stage presence is a better way to put it (i.e., obnoxious bully who punches down) that seems to draw MAGAs to Trump? I’ve paid attention to his policies and read about things he’s said but never have actually watched a public speech or presser. My impression is that he is as “charismatic” as Scott Walker (who always looks like he just woke up from a nap).

Wouldn’t it be delicious if there was a MAGA riot at the GOP Convention demanding that Trump be made the nominee?

And that is precisely why I hope Milwaukee doesn’t get the 2024 Republican national convention… It’s going to be an absolute shitshow with antifa demonstrations coupled with MAGA’s going after DeSantis supporters in the streets. A good possibility of violence with need for the call-up of the Wisconsin National Guard. Save this for some large southern city that can put up with this potential destructive debacle through the power of prayer.

I know Milwaukee wants the convention because of getting screwed with the severe downsizing of the 2020 Democratic convention. Unfortunately, the Republicans will consider this city because of swing state Wisconsin. Bad juju.

Ain’t going to happen with the current makeup of Congress. And it’s so much easier to say “Biden’s fault” than to understand that we need more progressives in Congress.

I concur, with the caveat that we get pragmatic progressives rather than those of the “purity pony” sort.

Forget write in; he could start the 45/Trump party. That would be glorious.

Assuming he can find fools willing to bankroll it. Trump will not fund it himself beyond bloviating about it and running grifts while not actually spending a dime.

I was just listening in the car to this. I liked the part about evidence against Trump: ‘there’s a lot of evidence, but it’s more of a mosaic than smoking gun;’ [Al Franken] ‘yeah, but when you pull back, it’s a mosaic of a smoking gun.’

re: #347 Teddy’s Person

Does DeSantis have the “charisma” or maybe stage presence is a better way to put it (i.e., obnoxious bully who punches down) that seems to draw MAGAs to Trump? I’ve paid attention to his policies and read about things he’s said but never have actually watched a public speech or presser. My impression is that he is as “charismatic” as Scott Walker (who always looks like he just woke up from a nap COMA).

Edited for my impression.

You know, the Los Angeles Dodgers are a popular baseball team nationwide. And, per usual, they are very good this year, so most games are sold out.

I will help any Dodger fans from states that are not represented by Major League Baseball to get tickets for good seats at Dodger Stadium.

All they need to do is email me with “Let’s Go Dodgers!” in the subject line, and I’ll know *exactly* what they’re talking about.

What I’d love to see? Trump gets whupped by DeSantis, then - in a fit of pique - Trump goes third party or write-in campaign.

I may have to vote as a republican during MN’s open primaries this year. I’ve done it once before in the 80’s when there was no drama on the D side but some dangerous Rs on the other side.

Ok.

Let’s get real here

No other democratic country has a “filibuster”*.

The “filibuster” is, even in America, a recent invention.

The “filibuster” is not a protection against the “tyranny of the majority”.

Just fucking dump it. Carve out an exception that is as big as Trump’s ass.

(* Actually many countries have an anti-filibuster — for example in the UK the government can explicitly limit debate on a law, and the only way around that is a vote of no confidence, in France the government can invoke article 42 of the constitution, which says the law pases unless the parliament votes no confidence…)
