They were pretty feeble in their response to Merrick Garland not getting a hearing. I remember how Republicans, when they didn’t get what they wanted on judicial nominations, had whole huge advertising campaigns, made it topic #1 on every Sunday show, etc.

Exactly right. Republicans just grab what they want, while Democrats dither and defeat themselves, over and over, for decades.

Here’s my contrarian view: I don’t want Democrats to find a quick fix right now. It does seem that they can get around enough of Hyde to help women who have been raped or need it for medical reasons, but white Democratic voters by-and-large suck, and a quick fix will give them an excuse to not show up in November so that a real fix can be done, and the Supreme Court will just overturn it.

The Sunday shows have been known to be accommodating to Democratic figures and surely give them equal time or more if they just ask, right?

Oh.

Well, surely, they can get the message out through the usual media chan-

Oh.

Well, surely it’s because they’re not actually doing anything that the media isn’t bothering to report on Dem acti-

Is it really so hard to accept that maybe there isn’t the One Simple Fix or Green Lantern Ring that can fix this immediately? And that the hard slog is not helped by a media that seems invested in covering Dems only when it’s bad, and laundering GOP talking points with unerring credulity? If a Dem actually fights, and the media obscures the message, did they actually fight?

Can they do more? Of course, they can always do more. But good goddamned, at this point people are asking for instant miracles for a fight that is going to last decades, because it already has lasted decades, and instead people are in full “beatings will continue until Dem results improve” with doing everything to tear down Dems on first instinct because the GOP is winning. It’s not about not criticizing Dems. It’s about not criticizing Dems to all exclusion of everything else, because at this point it’s like I’m hearing that Dems are the end-all, be-all of the problem, so fuck ‘em all and burn down the entire party. All the while they’re doing most of the things that are being asked of them and getting shit for it because of rapid disinfo campaigns either telling folks the opposite or telling them it’s not enough. Like, how many people know that Dems actually tried to do that exact ‘codify Roe’ dealie they’re being screamed at for now? And that it predictably failed, but instead of it focusing anger on the Republicans for ‘putting them on the record’ as voting against Roe, Dems got shit on endlessly for failing the vote that everyone knew was going to fail?

Dems aren’t getting credit for concrete actions, they’re not getting credit for performative actions, they’re not getting credit for trying to go after Republicans, they’re just getting shit on because in this country, everything is the Democrats fault somehow, especially Republican sins.

Is it so much to goddamn ask that we attack Republicans first and rage at imperfect allies and leaders later?

Me too. Thank you.

The criticism directed at Joe and Mika for their behavior in 2016 may be well deserved — but all the media was behaving that way. I think there were orders from corporate management to focus on the Trump show and keep him happy to keep ratings up. CNN would rather have a camera on an empty platform waiting for Trump’s arrival instead of covering an actual Democratic event. CBS Chief Executive Officer Leslie Moonves said of Donald Trump’s presidential run: “It may not be good for America, but it’s damn good for CBS.”

Let’s never forget that NBC created the Trump myth through their reality show The Apprentice. Without that show, Trump would never have gotten the GOP nomination. The 4th Estate — the MSM not Faux News —is responsible for the nightmare we are in today.

The only Fix is for them to get out and remind everyone that the GOP wants to take abortion rights away from ALL American women, and then turn their efforts towards a national ban on contraception, gay marriage, interracial marriage and segregation in general.

If you vote GOP you are voting for a party that is ready and willing to turn back 75 years of social progress in America and re-install Christianity as our de facto state religion.

Polling opens in the special election for NE-1 in a few hours. Facing off are former state senator Mike Flood (R) versus current state senator Patty Pansing-Brooks (D). Both shifted their campaigns to a referendum on Roe v Wade (Flood supports striking down the case, Pansing-Brooks was one of the state senators who led the charge against banning abortion in Nebraska earlier in the year).

Gov. Pete Ricketts (R-acist) is basing his calling of a special legislative session of the Unicameral to try to ban abortion again on the outcome of this election. If Pansing-Brooks wins, she resigns from the Unicameral, and Ricketts gets to appoint her replacement.

In most states, appointments to elective office to serve out a term require a governor to appoint someone of the same party. Nebraska officially has no parties, so Gov. Bulletthead will appoint the biggest wingnut he can find for her seat if she wins, then call a special session to try again to ban abortion. If she loses, Flood becomes a new US Representative and Ricketts probably won’t call the special session.

This sort of thing is what happens when Democratic voters only support those in blue states and ignore those of us trying to hold back the fascist tide in red states.

26
Anymouse 🌹🏡😷  Jun 27, 2022 • 11:56:38pm

The special election is to replace convicted felon Jeff Fortenberry (R).

If Flood wins, that results in no change in the US House. If Pansing-Brooks wins, the US House seat flips to D, and a very liberal legislative district in Nebraska is flipped to uber-Wingnut by fiat.

Douglas County reports first presumed case of monkeypox (Omaha World-Herald)

The Douglas County Health Department on Monday confirmed a case of orthopox in the county, which after further testing is expected to be the state’s first case of monkeypox.

Monkeypox is a virus in the orthopox family, which also includes smallpox. Monkeypox is milder than smallpox.

The person who is infected is a man in his 30s with a history of international travel, Health Department officials said. He is doing well and isolating at home. The department is tracing his contacts to identify any people who may have been exposed.

SIOUX FALLS | Former South Dakota Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg, in his first public comments since being removed from office last week, appeared before a state ethics board Monday to press for an investigation of fellow Republican Gov. Kristi Noem, the person he blames for his impeachment over his conduct surrounding a 2020 fatal car crash.

As attorney general, Ravnsborg last year filed a pair of complaints against Noem to the state’s Government Accountability Board alleging she abused the powers of her office by interfering in a state agency as it evaluated her daughter’s application for a real estate appraiser license and by misusing state airplanes. The board, which is comprised of retired judges, has not decided whether to investigate Noem and is working with an attorney to evaluate the merits of the complaints.

Ravnsborg appeared at the Government Accountability Board’s meeting for the first time since he initiated the complaints last year and said he was ready to provide additional information.

Naturally. IIRC there was a particularly nasty set of forced sterilization cases in the US, nearly all of which were from the Jim Crow South (can’t think why).

Right wingers caterwauling about Sanger being a eugenics fan is just more of their lying bullshit — for starters, it’s not as if the right has lost its attachment to eugenics, since eugenics and white supremacy have so often been synonyms.

Special session abortion fight starts now (News Channel Nebraska)

TL;DR, Pete Ricketts fell two votes short of banning abortion in the last legislative session. Vote-counting is going on now.

One of the Nay votes was a Democrat who has since died. Gov. Lex Luthor replaced him with another wingnut, so that’s a gain of one, with a wingnut representing a liberal Omaha district.

Two state senators won’t say how they’d vote.

If state senator Patty Pansing-Brooks is elected to the US House today, that will be the magic number when Gov. Moneybags appoints another wingnut to her liberal district.

Quite a conundrum. Do you try to preserve the Democrats’ US House majority, or do you vote to send a Republican to Congress to keep abortion legal in Nebraska?

Want to adopt a child in the US?

Ok. Here’s what you have to do.

Get a criminal background check. Get a lawyer if you try a private adoption to guide the process. Work with an agency if you’re going that route. Provide health information as to your personal health. Fill out a characteristics sheet of what kind of child you’d be willing to adopt (levels of exposures to drugs; children of women who were engaging in addictions can have serious health effects, such as fetal alcohol syndrome, neonatal hospital stays for withdrawal from effects of some opioids (though no lasting effects on development have been found so far); etc.)

Oh, and money. The adoption can run into the 20-30k range and then some - it’s usually income sensitive. You’ll also need to have home studies both before and after placement. After placement, you’ll need home studies to satisfy state requirements that you’re a good parent - this depends on the state and you’ll need a couple of these visits.

You’ll also need a lawyer for finalizations, including addressing any missing father scenarios so that they can’t disrupt the adoption process by claiming parenthood and assert their custodial rights.

Wait lists can mean it’s years before you can adopt.

Foster parenting is an option, but you’d have additional requirements on top of what you’d need for adoption.

Or, you can have the court force a woman to carry to term and have no means of supporting themselves or the child because the right wing fascists don’t care what happens after a fetus is born alive.

This is going to be today’s talking point for the GOP.

The Senate minority leader compared the Supreme Court’s abortion decision to its reversal on racial segregation in Plessy v. Ferguson.

They’re all parrots. Cornyn made that statement, and now it’s spreading across the hellsite known as Twitter from every conservative parrot. (Libertarian parrots are still telling “hoors should keep their legs closed then” over Roe, except the ones who say they own women now.)

See they’re exactly the same: Brown overturned Plessey, so that’s exactly the same as Roe being overturned. Because acknowledging a right is exactly the same as taking a right.

Adoption agency I worked with was very careful with the birth mothers, trying to counsel them as much as possible to see that they can keep the baby without an adoption plan - such as if the reason for not keeping the baby was due to insecure housing, lack of sufficient job, etc. Only if the birth mom was sure that they couldn’t care for the child would the agency establish an adoption plan with the mother, and consider placement with a family.

There are far more unscrupulous agencies that will do nothing to support the birth mothers, and unsurprisingly, some of these agencies are evangelical Christian in nature (and discriminate against families who aren’t Christian or are LGBTQ+ and have love to share with a baby through adoption).

Agency we worked with has a significant number of families who are LGBTQ+ and they don’t discriminate on basis of race or religion. Agency does require that anyone seeking a transracial adoption take special transracial adoption course and fill out additional paperwork to make sure that they can adequately address the issues around transracial adoptions.

Here’s a rundown of what we know Cassidy Hutchinson has told the J6 committee from Politico to get you ready for today’s hearing

She has been the source of a series of extraordinary revelations:

Burning documents: Hutchinson “told the panel investigating the Capitol attack that she saw Meadows incinerate documents after a meeting in his office with Rep. SCOTT PERRY (R-Pa.),” who was working closely with the White House to invalidate the results of the 2020 election, POLITICO’s Betsy Woodruff Swan and Kyle Cheney reported in May.

Violence: Hutchinson testified that she remembered a Secret Service agent “coming in and saying that we had intel reports saying that there could potentially be violence on the 6th.” The agent and Meadows huddled privately for five minutes to discuss the threats, she said.

Illegal plan: Hutchinson told the committee that the White House Counsel’s office, during a meeting with Meadows and RUDY GIULIANI and others, advised that the scheme to have alternate electors meet and cast votes for Trump was not legal.

Early start: She testified that “Mr. Giuliani, several of Mr. Giuliani’s associates, Mr. Meadows, Members of Congress,” were discussing a fake electors plan during Thanksgiving 2020.

GOP House members as co-conspirators: Hutchinson has given detailed testimony about a number of House Republicans who were involved with pressuring former VP MIKE PENCE to reject electors during the joint session of Congress and encouraging protesters to march on the Capitol Jan. 6.

Pardons: She is the key source for the revelation that six House Republicans sought pardons from Trump for their roles in the events of Jan. 6.

“Hang Mike Pence!”: She reportedly confirmed that Trump told Meadows on Jan. 6 that Trump agreed with the infamous chant of rioters who wanted to kill the vice president.

Martial law: In an extraordinary excerpt of her testimony that has been released, Hutchinson said that conversations about seizing voting machines, appointing SIDNEY POWELL as a special counsel and “invoking martial law” were stopped because “it became clear that there would be mass resignations, including lawyers in the White House Counsel’s Office.”

We don’t know, but I do expect their alignment to be lawful evil on this moving forward. Posts that say “pills can be mailed” will be allowed, and ones saying “I’ll mail you pills” won’t.

When exactly Facebook started removing these and similar posts is unclear. But Motherboard confirmed Facebook removed such posts on the same day that the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, the 1973 decision that legalized abortion in the United States.

This Court’s long con is to deny women their rights.

This Court’s long con is to roll back all the 20th Century civil rights advances.

This Court’s long con is to roll back voting rights and protections guaranteed under the Constitution and misread and misrepresent case facts and law to further their regressive agenda.

To wit:

Yeah, if you’re outlawing abortion (which is what trigger laws in nearly half the country does) - then women who are prosecuted under said laws will lose their right to vote as well. That’s by design. This is to disenfranchise and deny women agency over their bodies. It takes away their choices. It is coercive and cruel.

That’s the fucking point.

And the GOP has made no secret of what they’re looking to do next.

This is going to be today’s talking point for the GOP.

Libertarians used to support women’s rights. I still remember Perot’s running mate Vice Admiral James Stockdale emphatically endorsing a woman’s right to choose. But that’s before our politics became so toxic.

It still matters that these people have to GOTV. They have to take back seats in Congress, especially in the Senate. They have to win local elections. But not with any enthusiasm, I think — more like the vague thought that it might not be a bad idea. (Then Hitler showed the world what that would really look like, and the idea lost popularity.)

The only example I know of that’s actually from that time is a character in a Dorothy Sayers novel, who went around talking about the Sterilization of the Unfit and was more a figure of fun than anything else.

People who want to set up an underground railroad for abortion care need to figure out how to do it without social media. My concern is not that these companies will provide data directly to the state (although they might). I’m more concerned about their penchant for selling user data to increase their revenue. Isn’t their whole revenue stream based on selling data for targeted advertising? Now that the Chisto-Fascists have control of the SCOTUS all that dark money needs a place to go.

The Long Shadow of Eugenics in America
As young girls, the Relf sisters were sterilized without consent.

In the summer of 1973, Minnie Lee and Mary Alice were taken from their home in Montgomery, cut open and sterilized against their will and without the informed consent of their parents by a physician working in a federally funded clinic. The Relf case would change the course of history: A lawsuit filed on their behalf, Relf v. Weinberger, helped reveal that more than 100,000 mostly Black, Latina and Indigenous women were sterilized under U.S. government programs over decades. It also officially ended this practice and forced doctors to obtain informed consent before performing sterilization procedures — though as it would turn out, forced sterilizations by state governments would continue into the 21st century.

Path to the size of the Court hinges on historical nature of the Court’s relationship to the number of circuits.

Match the number of justices to the circuits.

How you comprise the court could also be done on a rotating basis. Chief Justice is consistent, but other justices rotate in and out on a regular defined schedule based on the senior circuit court of appeals justices. It would reduce the chances one party could game the Court’s docket to end democracy and roll back rights.

The RW media (and the mainstream lackeys) did a good job of portraying this as the case of a person engaging in private prayer in a public place (which was never in dispute) and ignoring the fact that he was using his capacity as a public employee on a public facility to proselytize a religious faith - to minors entrusted to his care.

Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) told worshipers at a religious service: “The church is supposed to direct the government. The government is not supposed to direct the church. That is not how our Founding Fathers intended it.”

She added: “I’m tired of this separation of church and state junk that’s not in the Constitution. It was in a stinking letter, and it means nothing like what they say it does.” Her comments were first reported by the Denver Post.

Look at the upside—By pretending the coach was involved only in quiet, private prayer with no impact on the students under his control, the Court has endorsed/permitted only that level of religious activity in a public venue. The bullshit that actually seems to have happened is not protected. This clown wins one, the next clown doesn’t.

So when the Founders literally write down what it is they were thinking, it doesn’t count - we have to believe these people, because they are the sole appointed arbiters of what the Founding Fathers actually felt and believed.

This is listed at $500, because the system designer set that as a minimum assuming that no house was worth less than $500. Bad assumption.

re: #214 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

The RW media (and the mainstream lackeys) did a good job of portraying this as the case of a person engaging in private prayer in a public place (which was never in dispute) and ignoring the fact that he was using his capacity as a public employee on a public facility to proselytize a religious faith - to minors entrusted to his care.

Had those students been kneeling on prayer rugs facing Mecca, the outcome might have looked different…

It is truly offensive that coaches want G-d to decide in their favor when all that is at stake is a game, where the opponents are not representing some evil destructive force. To reduce religion to a magical good luck talisman is to make it primitive and meaningless. My prayer is that our nation survive intact and as a democracy, with Roberts and his 5 companions denounced as monsters, and recorded as such by historians — and that they live long enough to see their victories turn to ashes and their reputations shredded for all time.

I’d like to see someone try to flip that house. Its a tearer-downer. And its got to be in a bad part of town if the net value of the lot after clearing it is no more than $1.00

That’s the problem. It’s not worth building there, so the land is worthless.
Tearing it down wouldn’t be fun with the neighboring, probably abandoned house attached to it. You might be able to buy both for $2, but the other house looks pretty nice, so that one might be $500.

For all this “America is a Christian nation” bullshit they’ve been slinging around for decades, the Founding Fathers sure didn’t say a whole lot about making Christianity the law of the land. In fact, they kinda went out of their way to do the opposite.

This was for the federal government.

State-level requirements for public office were not entirely abolished until 1961, when the Supreme Court of the United States struck down religious qualifications for all public officeholders in its decision in Torcaso v. Watkins, a case concerning an atheist’s right to serve as a notary public under a Maryland law requiring public officials to declare they believed in God. However, eight states still have language in their constitutions that requires such qualifications. Wikipedia

Libertarianism turned into “men should be in charge” which isn’t much different than the Republican platform.

From what I have seen most self-declared “libertarians” now are people who don’t think the GOP is going far enough fast enough. There are still “classic” libertarians around, but they are not the vocal sort who the media loves getting in front of a camera in order to record authentic frontier gibberish.

Fuck Zuck.

Facebook is busy pivoting, along with other huge corporations like CNN, the NYT and a myriad of other entities for the perceived eventual takeover of a hard right wing Christian fascist of the American Government. They are preparing to not only survive, but thrive in an environment of totalitarian Christian dictatorship.

FYI, Apple too will also cave after 2024 should a Republican win the White House and have to accept Republican direct involvement in their corporate governance. Yes, this means a non-compliant Tim Cook will likely be gone by force. People have little idea what is coming with about 50% of white men in this country being outright fascist misogynist Nazis.
