The other issue in the special election in NE-1 today is only one-quarter of the electorate voted. The final week of the campaign from both candidates became a referendum on the Roe decision.

We have mail balloting. Only one-quarter voted. Apparently abortion wasn’t a big determinant for voters if Democrats couldn’t be arsed to vote. On the other side, Pansing-Brooks losing means Ricketts can’t replace her with a wingnut and try again.

BTW, I meant to ask this is in a prior thread, but didn’t get around to it:
I have never before heard of a State where a vacancy in the State Lege gets filled by a unilateral appointment by the Governor - is that for the *full* term, or is there some proviso wrt an upcoming general election?

Mostly, I thought Statehouse vacancies (unless right before an election) were filled by special election.

Is this unique to Nebraska? I know you only have 49 seats in the Unicameral: are vacancies considered too important to leave unfilled for too long??

My dad commented about two days after Uvalde that some of his coworkers (read: old, white, Southern men) were “saying” that the Second Coming must be around the corner because it’s “never been this bad.” When I reminded him that he’s old enough (63) to have lived through the 70s and 80s when crime rates were outrageously higher compared to now, he bellowed that it was “never this bad” back then, which made me roll my eyes and point out that the statistics said otherwise.

Right now I am avoiding…many people…because I can’t deal with this kind of thing anymore.

Like, the inside of my brain is just a catalogue of historical atrocities—just endless heaps of dead and abused people—and I’ve lost the ability to be discrete with people when they hit that moment of “things are the worst now.” It’s a kind of self-indulgence to excise all the suffering you didn’t feel was close by, to read the gauge on the apocalypse like it was your gas meter.

The Ghost of a Flea  Jun 28, 2022 • 10:40:02pm

But it’s precisely because it’s selfish that reactionary media turns suffering in the US into doom-sign, but refuses to see suffering elsewhere as significant.

Dead kids in trucks from Mexico, dead kids under drone strike rubble in Pakistan…these are not signs of the end times. Jesus will not return because children are starving till their organs fail in Yemen.

One could claim that, thanks to climate change, we are on the brink of the worst disaster in human history — previous catastrophes had more limited reach. But my guess is that cataclysm is not on their minds when they complain that things have never been so bad.

So when those signs occur, they interrupt the process for a second opinion during which time the woman bleeds out.

re: #19 Hecuba’s daughter

I can argue with my own statement, generate the comparatively gentle take that people cannot grasp scale, cannot connect at a distance…

…but that isn’t my experience. My experience is that people in the developed world are taught, and do not question, that there are other places where it is simply normal that people live briefly and die cruelly. Die young near Cabrini Green or Karachi and that’s just the algorithm of existence—there are places where foreshortened life and violent death are just what happens. It can’t be a tragedy, with each death a whole inner world also not died, because it was inevitable: there are no systems to investigate, no causes to find, only the zone of less-personhood.

The thing that actually is getting worse—and that relates to climate change—-is that as time passes and destabilzation continues the same heuristic—over there is a place of death, bear it no mind—is stretched over more of the planet. Suffering isn’t a problem to be solved, it’s a contagion to be quarantined.

And thus when suffering arrives, cannot be sophistried-away as something over there belonging to an alien other…the self-indulgent choice is to view it as a doom, to don sackcloth and ashes and be assured that this was unavoidable and unanticipated.

The preferred reading of John’s Apocalypse in American Protestantism is just a version of what I’m talking about.

Rapture is a denial that death with come for the in group. They will be spared the universal uncertainty, the existential thing that make everyone equal; instead they will have the effortless transition to immortality…and everyone else will suffer but their suffering is ordained and bears no sympathy.

It’s just the end of Atlas Shrugged with God sprinkled on it.

I don’t know if it is unique to Nebraska, but the state constitution gives that power to the governor. As for vacancies being too important, the constitution requires an appointment unless it is sixty days before an election.

It’s not just “over there”. Look at the medical, economic, educational and QoL statistics for the red states. I’m starting to work up a model for blue state/red state relations that is essentially colonialism. A lot of the characteristics are there to explain “resentment” and “the religions of the oppressed”.

You didn’t grow up in a “more innocent time,” you were just a child with limited access to information

I remember asking my dad why we couldn’t have a backyard bomb shelter (during the Cuban Missile Crisis) and the only thing that upset me about the Kennedy assassination (I was three years at the time) was that I could not watch my Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoons because all the channels were covering the news from Dallas.

I was vaguely aware of the world around me through TV and that I was the youngest kid in an adult household who watched the news and discussed events.

Top aide to the Chief of Staff of POTUS isn’t a low level position. That’s about as high as it gets without being an aide to POTUS himself.

Chief of Staff is the gatekeeper to all that POTUS does. COS staffers are the ones who do all the heavy lifting for the COS. Hutchinson was Meadow’s go-to for everything.

In fact, she was his go-to in a highly unusual fashion as others have noted. She was in on everything to an uncanny degree.

So, far from being a low-level staffer, she’s right in the thick of it.

I don’t have a platform so i can’t reach people like you can but please share this I work in [REDACTED] on a small nicu/l&d floor. our trigger laws went into effect immediately after the decision. ofc we had an woman with an ectopic walk in at 11;30pm last night. we had to basically sit on her until the doc could speak with a lawyer. her ectopic RUPTURED. she then did not get her procedure done for another 9 HOURS be the doc was working with the lawyer for so long trying to work around the laws and not loose his liscence. by the time she had her procedure she had over 600cc of blood in her abdomen. she almost died. i am so scared of how often we as
nurses are going to see things like this now and not be able to do a damn thing about it. we were all livid at huddle tonight, several of my coworkers were in tears.

Then this pro-lifer quips: got a local news article where this person was interviewed anonymously?… I don’t trust phone screenshots. Hospital lawyers were already getting all this stuff figured out after the leak happened.
If the screenshot is fake, how could there have been a leak? Just asking questions, and so should you…

Search engines are giving me an advert for a Wyoming Superintendent of Instruction Republican candidate running on the platform of “keeping Critical Race Theory” out of public schools. Ugh.

There was a debate between the three candidates for that position a few days ago where each candidate tried to be more Trumpy than the other. On the Democratic side, there is only one candidate.

The final results are in for the special election for NE-1 to fill the seat of the convicted felon Jeff Fortenberry (not yet sentenced).

All balloting is by mail.

Total registered: 408,167
Total ballots returned: 113,226

Former state senator Mike Flood (R): 60,068
Current state senator Patty Pansing-Brooks: 52,913

This is why you don’t switch parties to “independent” or “Republican” for a primary. That almost never works, and you can’t vote in the Democratic primary for the best candidate for that race or down-ballot.

Liz Cheney is trying to get Democrats to do the same thing for the upcoming Wyoming Primary. That means you can’t vote in the down-ballot races in Wyoming if you do, and while Democrats do not hold power in the House or Senate there, they do hold power in counties, cities, and boards.

All of these gutter sniping right wing lunatics claiming that Hutchinson lied under oath, basing their claims entirely on single anonymous source who isn’t actually under oath, I get that - they’re doing what they always do.

It’s the fucking journalists who peddle this unsourced single anonymous source as though it dismisses what Hutchinson said. That’s the fucking problem here. They magic balance fairy single anonymous sources against someone testifying under oath and penalty of perjury.

Why would she lie under oath when the penalty for doing so is prosecution and prison?

She wouldn’t.

We already know Trumpworld corrupted everything it touched and everyone involved knew they were engaging in crimes and lining up for pardons. They all fucking knew. That’s the topline story. They all knew this was a criminal conspiraacy.

And they all went ahead and did it anyways, because they all thought it would succeed.

When it didn’t, they all engaged in further criminal conduct by covering up their criminal acts with still more crimes, and they are engaging in witness tampering, obstruction of Congress, and more.

The seditious conspiracy continues to this moment.

Mary “White Life” Miller won her primary over the incumbent:

Freshman Rep. Mary Miller, who had support of Donald Trump and the Club for Growth, beat five-term incumbent Rodney Davis 57-43 in a safely red seat in rural central Illinois. While neither member had much of a geographic advantage in this new seat, the far-right Miller proved to be a better fit for local Republicans than Davis, who had long sought to present himself as a moderate in order to win under the previous map and voted for a Jan. 6 commission.
Davis tacked right during this campaign and pledged to investigate the Jan. 6 committee if he became chair of the House Administration Committee, but it was far from enough. Miller, by contrast, told Trump at a rally on Saturday, “I want to thank you for the historic victory for white life in the Supreme Court yesterday.” (Her campaign responded by insisting she’d meant to say “right to life.”)

That Meadows is silent about the testimony yesterday speaks volumes. He knows he’s caught dead to rights in the seditious conspiracy, and his silence is purposeful as he lawyers the fuck up. Everything else is just noise and deflections. In fact, the real news is that Cippolone isn’t dismissing/discounting what was said either.

They all knew this was a crime spree by Trumpworld, and they did it anyways.

All of them should be prosecuted.

Greg Sargeant describes it well in Trump’s silly new ‘defense’ against Hutchinson is full of holes

In addition to providing an object lesson in how pro-Trump propaganda functions, this buffoonery reveals just how weak Trump’s defenses have become. The pushback is shriveling into meaningless trivialities even as the enormity of this scandal grows overwhelming.
