GOP is out to end all substantive due process rights. Alito and Thomas both laid out the explicit rules for how to do this - both in the draft that was leaked, and Thomas’ concurrence.

They’re intent on rolling back decades of progress. Take them at their word. They intend to do it, and are searching for the cases to make that happen.

Women can be just as crazy as men, of course.

Russian President Vladimir Putin would not have invaded Ukraine if he were a woman, Boris Johnson has claimed.

The UK prime minister said the “crazy, macho” invasion was a “perfect example of toxic masculinity” and he called for “more women in positions of power”.

But Downing Street said there was “not a deliberate policy” to publicly belittle Mr Putin.

I’ll believe life begins at conception when insurers allow me to take million dollar policies out on the developing fetus as a matter of course.

Life beginning at conception doesn’t overrule the woman’s right to preserve her own life if the pregnancy goes sideways (ectopic, etc.) and the fetus has no chance for viability or has already died in utero.

That’s the main thing to remember. Our base is not going to be animated by necessarily doing the same exact things the GOP does, just from the left, no matter how loud some of the voices asking for it demand it. And by necessity, we have to be the wide net for those who have been driven off by the GOP distilling themselves down to white fascism. That, unfortunately, means by necessity we cannot afford to go full scorched earth because we may lose as many or more votes than we would supposedly gain from doing so.

Not to mention that for much of our base, bipartisanship is still the virtue that they demand to see lip service paid to or they see ‘both sides same thing’ as the media constantly tells them.

That’s the shitty thing about having to be the party trying to preserve the union: you can’t just shed the norms and institutions that hold it up just because the other party is too, or you won’t have a union to rebuild if you do get power. You just have a civil war free for all over a husk. Does it suck? Yes, but that’s the problem with having to be the adult in the room: sometimes, you actually have to be the adult in the room even if people don’t see it that way.

What an irony that the central character’s name in the Supreme Court’s most recent school-prayer drama is Joseph Kennedy, the same appellation as President John F. Kennedy’s father. Facing strong anti-Catholic sentiment, Kennedy, the first Irish Catholic to become president, felt compelled to proclaim in 1960 his adherence to strict separation of church and state, assuring opponents that his policies wouldn’t reflect his personal religious views or the teachings of his faith.

“I believe in an America where the separation of church and state is absolute,” the candidate told a meeting of Protestant ministers in Houston. “I do not speak for my church on public matters, and the church does not speak for me.”

Because the US Supreme Court’s current six-person majority (John Roberts, Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett), all with conservative Catholic backgrounds, have expressed interest in historical bases for judicial decisions, it’s worth noting that Kennedy’s assertions not only preserved his political viability but reflected Jeffersonian ideals firmly embedded in our two-centuries-old constitutional cosmos.
The court’s ruling this week in Kennedy v. Bremerton School District ignores our founding values and eschews decades of its own precedents that enshrined them. Gorsuch’s majority opinion, joined by his five fellow conservatives, ruled that Kennedy, a football coach at a Bremerton, Washington, public school has First Amendment freedom of speech and religion rights to kneel and pray at the 50-yard line after games, surrounded by players and spectators. Allowing him to do so doesn’t violate the Constitution’s ban on state establishment of religion, according to the nation’s highest court.

Opinion: Brick by brick, the wall between religion and government is collapsing in America (CNN, Toobin warning)

“Cassidy Hutchinson, an aide to former Trump White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, released a new statement standing by her blockbuster testimony revealed in a hearing with the House select committee investigating January 6, in light of some pushback on her testimony,” CNN reports.

i think what she’s doing is courageous
i dont quite like calling her a hero

it’s just that in comparison, every single other person involved in this is a spineless, craven, pusillanimous chicken-heart

pence was no hero either.
like Hutchinson, he showed a certain amount of courage in the face of 147+ R’s who were voting to overturn, not to mention all the pressure and threats he was getting from his ‘running mate’, the white house, the willard hotel, the rioters themselves, etc.

so a bit courageous, yes.
heroic, not so much.
their efforts may have been excessive in the circumstances so plus for that.
their actions were no more than what we should expect, of a VP or a patriot etc.

these bees do buzz - using the muscles in their thorax to vibrate at a frequency (between 400 and 500hz) that causes pollen to spill out and inevitably onto the bee. Yesterday, her lawyer said the committee just turns out to be too biased. So she won’t be testifying after all.

also

Indeed, it’s fair to question the journalistic decisions behind some of these reports. […]the two men in question, Tony Ornato and Bobby Engel, have been able to get denials into print without even agreeing to speak on the record. In other words, they’ve refused to call up reporters and say, “I never said what she claims and the incident did not happen.” They have been able to get reporters to report that people ‘familiar with their thinking’ say they will deny it. I assure you: They could get their on-the-record quotes into print at the drop of a hat. All it takes is a phone call.

re: #168 No Malarkey!

Maybe there is a chance that Kentucky voters will refuse to amend the Constitution to ban abortion in November.

Just have to have enough voters to show up to outnumber the church voters.

re: #206 garzooma

Josh Marshall pointed out:

Earlier this month, Ginni Thomas, wife of Justice Clarence Thomas, made a big show of her willingness and desire to march right up to Capitol Hill and clear her good name before the Jan. 6th investigation committee. Yesterday, her lawyer said the committee just turns out to be too biased. So she won’t be testifying after all.

This is bullshit.
Who give a fuck what her lawyer says or thinks?
She’s a private citizen. Like me.
Not in congress
Or the administration
No privileges of any kind.

“do you know who I’m married to”?
Really?

Yep. I’m shocked but not surprised how Trumpy the Secret Service appears to be.

Like I said, he didn’t corrupt them, he just let em loose. Like he did with the party.

Nominate him, and have the Senate vote him down. Actually, it’s not up to Biden to even allow a vote.

Why does the GOP have to work to suppress Dem votes when Biden seems intent on doing it himself.

It would be an act of persecution and totally unfair if a Presidential Candidate would have to spend all the campaign time in a courtroom.

Nominate him, and have the Senate vote him down. Actually, it’s not up to Biden to even allow a vote.

The Senate will confirm him. Manchin will provide the 51st vote.

It’s the good-ol-boy network in the Senate once again rearing it’s head.

Biden is acting as if the Senate is still like it was when he was a Senator. So Biden cuts a deal with McConnell.

Of course it’s a deal with the devil.

For cold comfort, its only one more white bread Federalist Society judge just like all the others Trump nominated, and maybe McConnell will keep his deal; unlikely, but possible.

Two independents caucus with the Dems but those two have their own agendas or else they would be Dems.

I haven’t bothered to read Roberts’ concurrence to see if he invented some new standard to let him say Roe was still good law and a 15 week limit was constitutional. Since he couldn’t get any Justices to join him, its kind of irrelevant.

Roberts’ concurrence was full of the kind of reasoning that conservative jurists are supposed to love — particularly that business of not deciding more than they need to in order to deal with the case they are hearings. In other words, Roberts was saying (correctly IMO) that the MS 15 week ban could be upheld without overturning Roe.

So I bet that scared the crap out of Alito.

Failure of imagination.

Failure to accurately appraise the nature of the Republican threat.

Failure to recognize the extent to which our institutional norms and traditions failed to protect us.

Failure to recognize that agreements with Mitch McConnell are meaningless and that he WILL renege and stab you in the back at the first opportunity.

re: #50 William Lewis

The phone number at the family farm is still the same number that my parents got in 1967 when we moved into the family farmhouse. Now dad’s talking about selling the farm and moving into a retirement home - at 87 I can hardly blame him - but I hope they transfer the number there.

In my younger life, (which, granted, had the the most modern Telex systems in the country as I grew up on military bases), I remember we had to live in Stafford, VA when my dad was going to Command and Staff College at Quantico as there weren’t enough base housing units. We had a party line where our ring was too longs and a short.

Stafford was at the south edge of the Quantico Proving Ground where shave-tail butter bar officers (and this was in 1966 as the USMC was ballooning its junior officer cadre) trained to be infantry officers.

We spent the summer of 1965 down there and it was lovely, if hot and humid.

Trip flares all over the roads, 7.62 blanks all over the forest, fresh asparagus and apples from the abandoned farmhouse next door, Black Rat and King Snakes everywhere, and the satisfaction of changing the road signs wherever we found them to make the butter bar’s lives a living hell. One of the best summers of my life.

In the fall we got into base housing where we had an absolutely stonking blizzard that winter, and a Company Commander (Captain) in the Nam got blown away and left his wife and three kids fatherless in the spring. They lived three doors down from us. That was awful, but we got used to its in the next few years.

Back in 2020, on the night of the election, some here were unhappy with me (IIRC) because I was being pessimistic, because the Dems failed to flip either of the Maine or Iowa US Senate seats that night.

I figured the Dem agenda and Biden’s agendas were DOA.

It was surprising what happened in Georgia.

So now here we are almost 2 years later and it appears as if McConnell has successfully stopped anything the Dems want to do of any significance.

McConnell is going to hold up any appointments unless he gets something in return. That something being goodies for the religious right’s agenda.

You can. You can call from centers to other States to tell them how to register.
Where to go, when to do it, &c. We can all do it. I certainly will, and although it seems hopeless in Texas, it isn’t.
