This year, NPR Music is celebrating Black Music Month with an array of brand new Tiny Desk concerts — both from home and from behind our beloved Desk. Together, these artists represent the past, present and future of Black music. This month of carefully curated shows is a celebration of Black artists expressing themselves in ways we’ve never seen before, and of the Tiny Desk’s unique way of showcasing that talent.

“We celebrate Black Music Month. This has been Black magic.” Truer words may have never been spoken behind the Tiny Desk as R&B goliath Usher caps off our month-long celebration of Black music, highlighting a catalog chock-full of hits spanning 25 years. It’s been over two years since NPR headquarters was abuzz with chatter of a legend in the building. After an early morning rehearsal for his set at the Something in the Water Festival in Washington, D.C., he made his way over to deliver an unforgettable performance.

Usher and his band, all dipped in black, set it off with an introduction over a funky horn-laced instrumental reminiscent of a Blaxploitation flick. They keep that groove going right into a reworked version of his 1997 breakout single, “You Make Me Wanna…” Twenty-five years later, Usher sits arguably as the king of R&B. Between 2000 and 2010, there was no debate whatsoever, with his string of records that included the biggest R&B album of the 21st century, Confessions.

What he’s done in the vocal booth is only half of his claim to fame. The stage is where he’s continued to shine as he prepares for the second leg of his Las Vegas residency. This loose and playful set touches on his many career phases; the crooning, the deeply personal, the club bangers and even the Tik Tok challenges indicate that he could just be reaching his prime. Recently, we’ve heard plenty of hot takes, wild battles and social media fodder about who sits at the mountaintop in the world of R&B. Usher Raymond has entered the chat.

To me, anyone who ends a tweet with some version of “who else thinks so?” is a grifter.

There doesn’t need to be a vacancy right now if the deal is for a future vacancy.

BTW, there *are* two judges in Kentucky that could retire at any time, so there’s that.

Tropical Storm Warnings and hurricane watches have gone up on the east coast of Nicaragua, and tropical storm watches on the west coast, as Potential Tropical Cyclone #2 approaches. The storm is expected to maintain its tropical characteristics as it goes over the mountains and emerge as a tropical storm in the Pacific. It is then expected to intensify to a hurricane as it moves up the Mexican coastline.

Pro tip: the many who desire a Christian authoritarian state are being bamboozled into a strictly warlord-style medieval Libertarian Utopia where local corruption reigns supreme. This of course has no bounds and really no rules so anarchy is the result in the near term.

There is really no modern analogy of what is to come should Republicans get what they want- some sort of Americanized weird hybrid of the Balkans, Putin’s Russia and Boss Hogg.

An anarchy always leads to a dictatorship. It may be a warlord or a monarch or what have you, but politics abhors anarchy like nature and a vacuum… ;)

Governor Catholic Theocratic Asshat weighs in:

Ricketts says Nebraska schools should consider allowing ‘religious accommodation’ (Omaha World-Herald)

LINCOLN — Gov. Pete Ricketts voiced support for allowing more faith-based practices in Nebraska schools during an event Wednesday celebrating Religious Freedom Week.

Ricketts’ comments came in response to a question regarding a tweet by Republican gubernatorial candidate Jim Pillen, a University of Nebraska regent and Columbus hog producer. Ricketts, who cannot run for reelection because of term limits, has strongly supported Pillen’s campaign for governor.

“We need to put God back into our schools,” Pillen tweeted Monday. “I strongly support efforts to put prayer back into our K-12 schools. We should be teaching the next generation to love God and our great country.”

The tweet referenced news about Monday’s U.S. Supreme Court decision that determined a Washington high school football coach was within his rights to pray at midfield following football games. Pillen’s comments fueled strong backlash online, with more than 600 replies, many of them critical.

Critics argued that instilling religion in the classroom would violate the Nebraska State Constitution and contradict the separation of church and state.

Matt Trail with the Pillen campaign told The World-Herald that Pillen has been campaigning to bring God back into schools since pretty much the beginning of his gubernatorial campaign. A booklet on his platform, referred to as “The Pillen Playbook,” goes more in depth, saying he wants prayer brought back into K-12 schools, specifically Christian prayer.

“The erosion of Christian faith is hurting America,” a section reads. “Secular humanism has taken over our schools because we allowed radical ideologues to silence our nation’s Christian convictions.” (more)
