LYRICS:

The Dreamer

Just a child when she crossed the border
To reunite with her father
Who had travelled North to support her
So many years before
She left half her family behind her
And with a crucifix to remind her
She pledged her future to this land
And does the best that she can do

¿Adónde van los sueños?
Nacidos de la fe y la ilusión
Donde no hay camino ni huella
Solo deseos que susurran al corazón

Eagles fly on columns of the wind Viviendo en el viento
Fish swim the currents of the sea Qúe libre, el mar
People cross oceans and deserts and rivers Cruzamos el río
Carrying nothing more than the dream of what life could be

Today she got the order
They’re taking steps to deport her
To send her back over the border
And tear her away from the life she has made
We don’t see half the people around us
But we see enemies who surround us
And the walls that we’ve built between us
Keep us prisoners of our fear

¿Adónde van los sueños? Where do the dreams go?
Nacidos de la fe y la ilusión Born of faith and illusion
Donde no hay camino ni huella Where there’s no road and no footprint
Solo deseos que susurran al corazón Only desire that whispers to the heart
Solo deseos que susurran al corazón Only desire that whispers to the heart
Solo deseos que susurran al corazón

The committee requested testimony, subpoenaed testimony, and is currently fighting in courts to get testimony from Trump’s “side.”

But sure, Brit, the committee has done nothing to “present both sides.”///////

It would have been a rerun of the first impeachment proceedings, where real efforts to get the truth out were constantly interrupted by long speeches and pointless segues into how Trump was the greatest president evah for sending Javelin missiles to Ukraine.

If Jordan and Banks had been on the committee, we probably wouldn’t even be having hearings. The committee would have been such a clusterfuck that Dem leadership would have just settled for issuing a report because the circus that would have unfolded on live TV would have done little but given the GQP a bigger platform to promote the Big Lie.

A woman in Kimball, Nebraska is pushing forward with the idea that if a person has suicidal thoughts, the last place they should go is anti-social media.

(Hidden for description of scene)

Her son hung himself from the Union Pacific caboose in downtown Kimball in the middle of the night. He was not discovered until the following morning.

He posted a message to Faceborg a few days before he ended his life.

He had been working with a psychologist in Colorado to overcome extreme pain from a car wreck he was a passenger in.

The National Suicide Prevention Hotline number 9-8-8 will be activated on July 16. (That switches nationwide to the existing 1-800 number.) On that date, all telephone numbers in the United States must be dialed 1-(area code)-number. Seven or four digit numbers will be rejected on that date.

When walking home from the bank this afternoon, I listened to a youtube compendium of Reagan humor while he was in the WH. He may not have been a good person and many of our problems started with him, but he was charming with the appropriate temperament for the Presidency and the ability to work with others, even those who did not share his views. He was a conservative with a real sense of humor and, in personality, nothing at all like Trump or the radicals who infest the GOP today.

The key bit being “under oath.” They’re all happy to sit before the media and repeat their lies until blue in the face, but none of them are willing to say the same shit before the committee where being caught in a lie carries greater penalties than just being dragged for a few days in the media.

He was an actor. Of course, he could present that fantasy while shredding the constitution and setting up the long-term destruction of America. Make no mistake, he was as radically reactionary as any of them today. Just look at his Neshoba County Fair “states’ rights” speech just down the road from where the three civil rights workers were murdered for the real Reagan.

Good lord…

Notice that what they’re really doing is amping up support of genocide against non-conservatives, under the excuse “they were going to genocide us, so we have to genocide them”. Except genocide is never, under any circumstances, okay under international law.
Also, notice how they simply changed “white” to “conservative” in the conspiracy theory narrative. But it is the same poisonous narrative.

Same as this list, where “they”:
• … are behind a plan for global conquest,
• … work through Masonic lodges,
• … use liberalism to weaken church and state,
• … control the press,
• … work through radicals and revolutionaries,
• … manipulate the economy, especially through banking monopolies and the power of gold,
• … encourage issuing paper currency not tied to the gold standard,
• … promote financial speculation and use of credit,
• … replace traditional educational curriculum to discourage independent thinking,
• … encourage immorality among Christian youth,
• … use intellectuals to confuse people,
• … control “puppet” governments both through secret allies and by blackmailing elected officials,
• … weaken laws through liberal interpretations,
• … will suspend civil liberties during an emergency and then make the measures permanent.

It does not matter who the “they” are. It is the same poison. It has the same toxicity to society. And really the “they” changes with whoever is the bogeyman or scapegoat du jour, sometimes they play the synonym / name change / translation game to obscure what was there all along…

I was never a fan of Reagan and voted against him both times he ran for office. It wasn’t his intellect or policies or viewpoint that got my approval. His handling of AIDs was a disgrace, his guns for hostages ploy was a disgrace, his trickle down economics only helped the wealthy, his environmental policies were destructive, etc But he did have the right temperament for the office.

Charges dropped against man who nailed Putin doll to sacred tree in Japan as part of death curse

“The charges against the elderly man who was arrested for nailing a straw doll bearing the face of Russian President Vladimir Putin onto a sacred tree in Japan have been dropped.

Mitsunobu Hino, 72, was arrested last month on suspicion of property damage and trespassing in the area of Matsudo’s Mikazuki Shrine.

Hino was accused of hammering two holes measuring 1.6 inches deep into the sacred castanopsis tree by nailing the straw doll to it. The “wara ningyo” doll, which is used in Japan as a part of a supernatural ritual to wish death or harm to a person, also came with a note that read, “Vladimir Putin, born 7 October 1952. Pray for his extermination.”

Hino was released from police custody on June 27 after investigators said the shrine had withdrawn the charges for property damage.”

He’s lying about a programme which gives $500,000 to organisations which protect persecuted religious minorities in foreign countries (not the USA). That includes atheists, so he lies to say the programme promotes atheism, not fights persecution.

I saw earlier today that Norway was trending and wondered why so I took a gander at the news stories.

Long story short: Norway has sovereignty over Svalbard but the treaty recognizing such declares that other countries also have rights to resources there.

And thus that is why a few Russians are there.

Currently Norway is blocking Russian traffic like many countries.

Christians are a persecuted minority in some countries outside the USA. Does Rep. Banks not want to help Christians?

Banks is a conservative. He cares about power. If a few hundred thousand Christians have to die so he can grasp a little bit more power, then too bad for them.

Oh, I know that, and I also know that non-American Christians don’t matter to any of the right-wing Christofascists that are so prevalent these days. It’s literally all about White American Christian men; the plight of Chinese Christians, or the Coptics in Egypt, they could not care less.

re: #63 Florida Panhandler

The U.N. will soon be issuing Women’s Travel Warnings for individual states in the USA. Welcome to our new Libertarian Utopia.

Not a single country in the world offers such warnings about abortion restrictions.

Why Don’t Travel Advisories Include Countries’ Abortion Restrictions?
(Vice, yesterday)

Leah Hoctor, senior regional director for Europe at the Center for Reproductive Rights, said: “As the chilling set of circumstances endured by Andrea Prudente in Malta exemplify, laws that ban and criminalize abortion have serious repercussions for peoples’ lives and health.

“Many countries do currently provide public information to their citizens as part of travel advisories regarding laws and policies that criminalize sexual conduct outside of marriage or same-sex relationships. Updating such guidance to include information about the criminalization of reproductive healthcare, where relevant, would be an important step for ensuring people understand the implications of these laws.”

I cooked sausage today in a Wagner #4 blended heat ring skillet. Now that’s an unusual skillet. And it’s in great shape. And I’m starting to cook again, after a few years off.

Wagner makes some MyTea fine cast iron. Cheaper than Le Crest, too, by a lot. A big Dutchie (#27) is about $180. A #4 Wagner is about $60? Smaller though, around 7” vs. 10.25”.

The main image I always get reading articles like this is a flashback to S2Ep1 of Extant, where Goran Visnjic’s character was assassinated by The Usual Sinister Conspiracy, who hack his self-driving cab, then lock him in and stall it on a railroad track in front of an oncoming train. And it’s not reassuring to think that it could also happen by “accident”…

Prediction (assuming it hasn’t happened already): Some scammer will market a pseudo-science based “pregnancy detector” wand and try to peddle it to anti-abortion police, church vigilantes, bounty hunters, etc.
Back in the early aughts. a completely fake bomb detector sold thousands of units, yielding millions in profit for the scammers. The Iraqi police were one customer and they actually used it at hot checkpoints, with catastrophic results.

Voter fraud claims are heating up a battle for political control in an oil-rich Texas county

Eleven people are registered to vote at this address. One of them is Loving County Commissioner Ysidro Renteria, who has been in office since 2011 and listed this property in December as his permanent address on his application to run for re-election, signed under oath. He and at least three relatives used the address to vote in the March primaries.

The secret?

“No one lives there,” Loving County Sheriff Chris Busse, who also serves as the registrar of voters, said in May. “I can attest that I’ve been here since 2008 and there has never, ever, ever been any of the Renterias — not even Ysidro — occupying it.”

funnily, i just made pasta sauce a few days ago with some italian sausage (not cased) in the giant carbon steel skillet i found for a good price on amazon. that shit is really all right. it wasn’t grocerystore sausage, but some stuff my local butcher has access to. it has kick, but not too much. used a can of rao’s marinara, a small onion, a red bell pepper. didn’t even add any additional seasoning. best damn sketti sauce i’ve likely ever made.

When nine accused leaders of the Oath Keepers go on trial this fall to face seditious conspiracy charges for their role in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot, jurors in the government’s first big, showcase trial will hear a defense argument that will sound outlandish to many.

Jurors will be told that the far-right extremists believed President Donald Trump would invoke the Insurrection Act as they gathered at the Capitol — 100 strong in their camo-colored tactical gear — and turn them into his own, ultra-loyal federal militia.

Democrats must run for every available office. If you can’t find someone, file yourself.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A special election in Nebraska was supposed to be an easy win for House Republicans. It instead was the tightest race in decades in the GOP-dominated district, boosting confidence among Democrats hoping to energize voters by tapping into public outrage over the U.S. Supreme Court’s abortion ruling.

Republicans still won the open seat as expected, but the margin surprised even some Democrats who have grown accustomed to lopsided, morale-crushing defeats.

Republican Mike Flood beat Democrat Patty Pansing Brooks with 53.2% of the vote in Tuesday’s special election, according to unofficial results. Pansing Brooks received 46.8%, with less than 7,200 total votes separating the candidates. The win was the narrowest in decades in the Republican-heavy, mostly rural 1st Congressional District, which hasn’t elected a Democrat to the House since 1964.

“It was a thrilling result,” said Danielle Conrad, a former Democratic state lawmaker from Lincoln. “Patty far outpaced the conventional wisdom. I don’t think anybody expected her to perform this well in such a tough district.”

Archbishop: COVID Is Fake, It’s Time For A Revolution (Joe My God, July 1, 2022)

Far-right Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano has done an interview with Steve Bannon’s War Room website and it’s a doozy. An excerpt:

The SARS-CoV-2 virus is nothing but a seasonal flu that could have been cured with existing treatments and effective prevention based on strengthening immune defenses. The prohibition of treatment, the discrediting of the effectiveness of drugs that have been in use for decades and the imposition of an experimental gene treatment that has been demonstrated not only to be ineffective but also harmful and often fatal - all this confirms for us that the pandemic has been planned and managed with the purpose of creating the greatest damage possible.

Thom did shows for RT America. I don’t trust him. His scenario is exactly what Putin wants. And I think it’s convenient that there is no agency for us as voters. Nothing we can do. Except listen to Thom some more. I wonder which leftist news outlet overlooked his old network to hire him?

But he is wrong in that the state legislatures couldn’t decide after the election to throw the votes to a specific candidate. The laws dictating the allocation of electors have to be on the books before the election starts. So the states mentioned would literarily need to pass laws before the election that say ‘the legislative can assign electors to whichever candidate it wants ‘.

The Sandhills Tropical Update:

5-Day Graphical Tropical Outlook

Tropical Storm Bonnie has formed right on the coast of Nicaragua. Tropical Storm Warnings are in effect for both coasts of Nicaragua and Costa Rica. The storm is expected to retain its tropical characteristics as it crosses the Rocky Mountains, and emerge into the Pacific Ocean as a tropical storm. Afterwards, it is expected to intensify to a hurricane as it skirts the coastline of Mexico.

Tropical Disturbance 1 has formed just inland of Charleston, South Carolina. This system is expected to move up the Atlantic Coast, and if it remains close enough to the ocean or moves over it, will intensify into a tropical storm. The chance of development in the next 48 hours is 40%.

Tropical Disturbance 2 is over the Windward Islands, moving WNW. Conditions are not favourable for development (10% over five days).

This is the same dickhead who sprung Kim Davis on Pope Francis and tried to claim Francis invited her, while said dickhead was the Papal Nuncio to the USA. In response, Francis fired him from that job.

He keeps it up and he’ll be appointed as a bishop to a Titular See (a former see which is depopulated or was overrun by invaders and no longer has Catholics in it). Such sees are a way to be rid of “troublesome priests” by the Church.

He already has that job. He’s “titular archbishop of Ulpiana”, which is described as an ancient Roman city located in Kosovo. It currently consists of an archaeological park.

Good point. But haven’t certain state legislatures passed laws that make it easier for them to ignore the popular vote? Perhaps they just claim that there was a problem with voting integrity and so they will select the electors. Or have their new voting laws only made it harder for certain people to vote?

Meadows Intermediary Tried to Influence Hutchinson
“One of people who may have been trying to influence Cassidy Hutchinson’s testimony did so at the behest of former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows,” CNN reports.

“Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY), the vice chairwoman of the committee, brought up two examples of possible witness intimidation at a hearing featuring Hutchinson, who was an aide to Meadows in the Trump White House, earlier this week, without naming a witness or who made contact.”

“Sources now tell CNN that both instances recounted by Cheney were directed at Hutchinson, and that Hutchinson believes the messages were intended to impact her testimony.”

Nah, in this case the entire issue is due to their lack of planning. They know their bank will auto-reject out-of-state charges if they’re not given a heads-up, but they didn’t inform them so their reservation got auto-cancelled when the PMS got a decline from the bank when authorizing the first night’s rate. Then they showed up at 2am without calling us to let us know they’d be a late arrival because “We didn’t know about the traffic,” so they arrived just as the audit was running. And then got frustrated with me because I couldn’t tell them with any certainty how long the fully automated process was going to take.

Browsing around the fantasy genre of films to find something to watch I came across this:

The Blazing World

I found parts of it very interesting. It is not a good movie, by my standards, because the structure of the film promises a plot like standard movies but half way through it switches into more of a collage of interpretive film.

The blurb on IMDB:

Decades after the accidental drowning of her twin sister, a self-destructive young woman returns to her family home, finding herself drawn to an alternate dimension where her sister may still be alive.

… is misleading. As are the genre tags of “comedy” and “adventure”. In reality it is straight up fantasy that bends towards horror in parts.

Only recommended to those who like film as a medium to explore, again, because the film will fail if you expect it to be a cohesive story.

Also, the lead actor, Carlson Young, may be familiar to some from her work as an actress, but here she was the director (and co-writer) and I think she shows promise as this is her first real production in which she was in such control.

One part, set in a desert, I found rather compelling as a horror story, without resorting to blood and guts.

This happened today in Ohio.

re: #255 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus

The music obviously borrows from Tchaikovsky.

Perhaps that is also what I thought interesting about the movie as part of the soundtrack is from The Nutcracker.

I’ve been going through a pile of movies, less notable (i.e. not blockbusters). Most don’t keep me for more than 10 minutes as so many film/TV works are too much by rote, too predictable, and often without depth of acting or dialogue.

A soundtrack can make or break a production.

A soundtrack can make or break a production.

Or even a scene: in The Empire Strikes Back, this scene is our introduction to the might of the Galactic Empire (at the 1:25 mark)….

Youtube Video

“The Imperial March” perfectly sets the scene. A boldly militaristic march that lets us, the viewer, know that the Empire is deadly serious and not some hapless organization, but one fully intent on imposing its will throughout the Star Wars galaxy.

Chef’s kiss, indeed.

A light in a sea of darkness.

A mosque in Berlin on Friday became the first in Germany to fly a rainbow flag in support of the LGBT community, ahead of two major gay pride events in the city this month.

The Ibn Rushd-Goethe Mosque in the central Moabit neighbourhood unfurled the flag ahead of Friday prayers in front of a small crowd, including Berlin’s culture senator Klaus Lederer.

Many of those attending wore rainbow stickers that read “Love is Halal”.

The mosque, founded five years ago, is Germany’s only self-described liberal mosque and allows men and women to pray together, as well as being open to LGBT worshippers.

Well, I get the feeling this is gonna be a big news story here in Czech Republic pretty soon:

In a sophisticated “pillaging and plundering” scheme that involved blatant abuse of power in the upper echelon of the Turkish government, associates of the corrupt President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan defrauded the Czech Export Bank and its insurer EGAP of more than 400 million euros.

The scheme, part of a secret plan to enrich Erdoğan and his cronies in a series of unlawful seizures with the manipulation of regulatory bodies and the criminal justice system, was put into motion when Turkish conglomerate Naksan Holding, valued at $3.6 billion and comprising 51 companies, was forcibly taken over from its owners in July 2016, with new management installed to run it.

But he is wrong in that the state legislatures couldn’t decide after the election to throw the votes to a specific candidate. The laws dictating the allocation of electors have to be on the books before the election starts. So the states mentioned would literarily need to pass laws before the election that say ‘the legislative can assign electors to whichever candidate it wants ‘.

i remember discussing this a couple of years back

Good morning!

Interesting. Seeing the photo I wiki-ed “Frittata” to see how it differed from an omelet.

And what I make as my standard heavy breakfast (when I make one) is much closer to a frittata in format than an omelet, though arguably neither do to how I cook them.

Sort of a omelet-frittata hybrid?

Preparing the above dish for instance:
0. Using the 6” pan instead of my smaller omelet pan.
1. Veggies (Green Peppers and Onion) being fried in butter in the pan to soften them under medium or low-medium heat.
2. Three eggs whipped in separate bowl - some air for fluffiness and uniformity.
3. Eggs added to pan once the veggies are softened up and onion maybe caramelizing a bit. (Expectation is that onion will caramelize a bit more.
4. Herbs, salt, pepper added. Cheese added on top. *
5. Pot lid placed over pan. ** (Intended to hold heat in and help melt the cheese and cook the egg on the top and avoid any desire or need to flip the thing.)
6. Once top is set and/or molten cheese folded to ease serving and plated for eating.

* - Wikipedia appears to differ omelet for frittata based on at what point the extras are added on top, before or after the egg is cooked.

** - This is my major change in process. Picked it up when I saw a short order cook using a lid on a griddle in order to help things on the top of a food being fried to get cooked/melted like cheese. It also alleviates a need to bake/broil or flip something to get the top cooked. Though folding an omelet and letting it rest a bit will often allow the egg on top to finish setting as well. (I don’t like gooey eggs, so getting them to set makes a difference to me.)

A Derbyshire café has been the recipient of a letter threatening legal action and a victim of graffiti, all because of the “punny” name of one of its sandwiches. The Bridge Bakehouse in Whaley Bridge offers freshly baked, handmade goods including cakes, pastries and sandwiches, one of which has been branded an “insult to Christianity”.

The café boasts a menu of sandwiches, most of which have playful names, including “Don’t go bacon my heart”, “Are you chicken me out?” and “Get ya goat, you’ve pulled”. These are just a small selection of the puns on offer at this popular Peak District business.

However the name which has sparked this entire saga is a caramelised onion, onion chutney, mature cheddar and mozzarella sandwich, dubbed the “cheesus Christ”. The sandwich has been on the menu since last year, but in the last week the sandwich name on the cafe’s outdoor menu has been painted over in white paint and the business has been sent a letter claiming to be from a Christian group threatening legal action.

That only works until the GOP takes over the House or Senate and bars aid to Ukraine. MTG represents the id of the contemporary Republican Party. Their orange messiah has expressed displeasure over our funding of Ukraine in their battle for survival. I have no doubt that the GOP will betray our nation.

The MIC still holds sway with many elected Republicans. The votes on aid to Ukraine weren’t close… that’s one area where I’m not concerned about continued support.

What did Uber tell their clients about being a passenger in a self-driving vehicle? If Uber claimed that the client could nap or read while the car was in motion, then CEO should be put on trial for manslaughter. If, however, clients were told that they had to be alert and pay attention to the operation of the vehicle, then she should be held responsible if she was distracted while the car was in motion.

There was a time when I was involved in a lot of incidents, back at the beginning of 2021, when we had just released our new platform. We cleaned some stuff up and improved reliability in some key areas, and my pages quickly tailed off.

I just got back from a funeral visitation. I didn’t know the person. She was one of the people my wife helped care for through her eldercare job. She always goes to the visitations if she can, but my wife is visiting her own ill mother and asked me to go in her place. I approached the husband and said “Ben?” He said, “oui?” Oh, right. He is Benoit, not Benjamin. Anyway, it was fascinating. A lot of the older people still had an accent, though it’s possible they were family from Quebec.

In a House run by McCarthy, where traditional Republicans have been replaced by MAGAts, I wouldn’t count on that at all. Those who support Trump are against assistance to Ukraine; they want money directed to “help” Americans, not supporting the survival of the free world, because they support Putin.

Pastor and family stole $8M from taxpayers in Covid scam, feds say. Why haven’t they been charged? (NBC News)
A case which started with the Secret Service tipping off the Florida State Patrol about a high-dollar Mercedes-Benz they were looking for, a Canadian Christian ministry charged with defrauding the United States, immigration fraud, and using a demented accountant who hadn’t worked for years filing fraudulent paperwork with Canada and the USA. They were charged for the immigration fraud, but that case was dropped. They have not been charged with stealing over eight million dollars from the Paycheck Protection Program.

While I want these asshats arrested and charged, I strongly suspect that this isn’t the first fraud that they’ve done, and that in fact they’ve been grifting in various ways for years. But yeah, charge these guys with the obvious fraud on the USA. If the Feds can arrest guys for using their PPP checks on Lambos, they can charge these guys even though they’re god peddlers. In fact, charge them BECAUSE they’re god peddlers and maybe put the fear of God into the rest of the thieves and con artists out there. /Absolutely NOT in the mood for it today.

Only 10 Republicans in the house voted against the lend lease act for Ukraine.

“Eat recycled food: It’s good for the environment, and okay for you.”

Eat Pagpag

Pagpag is the Tagalog term for leftover food from restaurants (usually from fast food restaurants) scavenged from garbage sites and dumps.[1][2] Pagpag food can also be expired frozen meat, fish, or vegetables discarded by supermarkets and scavenged in garbage trucks where this expired food is collected.[3] The word in the Tagalog language literally means “to shake off the dust or dirt”, and refers to the act of shaking the dirt off of the edible portion of the leftovers. Pagpag can be either eaten immediately after it was found in the trash or cooked in variety of ways after collecting it.
