The only math I needed today is that, after 27 years of sitting unused in the basement, I hauled all of my freeweights off to the secondhand sports store. It took about 10 trips to get them all out to the car and the store tabulated them to weigh 297 pounds. I got $100 for the weights plus a pair of hockey skates I hadn’t used for 30 years. They were happy, I was happy, and very sweaty. Ibuprofen and Gatorade have been my friend this evening.

I have a 2009 Grand Caravan with the 3.8 engine and it can get up and walk. Runs hot. Needs more oil changes. But it can jump. Handles very good. My mechanic tells me the shocks good, but I’m going to replace. 130,000 and kicking. No leaks. All tight. Seat 6 comfy. Mini camper.
Oh and I carried all the PA equipment and my amp and pedalboard and bass players shit with 4 passengers and it did high speeds very well….

So we only hit 97º yesterday, and we are back above 100º today, and will be for the foreseeable future.

We had the hottest June, since record keeping began, this year and by a fair amount (A couple of tenths over an entire month is a *lot*. Five degrees over the 10-year rolling average is a shitpot.)

We’ve also had a significant dry spell. She Who Must Be Obeyed (SWMBO) has set up our front and back yards as drinking stations in the past month or so. The birds are legion. The Lizards are everywhere. And this morning SWMBO told me to keep an eye out for a new regular visitor out back.

So around two this afternoon, a young Gray Fox shows up for a liquid libation.

These are quite common in Texas, but not so much in the Urban Core. Gorgeous creatures, less likely to be rabid than Red Foxes, and are artful tree climbers. Bottle brush tails, a bit over thirty inches long, they are quite handsome animals.

Nice to see it in our tiny 50” X 150” urban lot.

If they were doing this in my county, they’d be deflating the tires of all but about ten vehicles.

A few years ago there was the issue of dipshytes in San Francisco rolling over Smart cars (far more damaging than deflating a tire). I forwarded an article about it to our county prosecutor (the only other person in my county who owned a Smart at the time).

Disclosure: I have an elderly Ford F-350 crewcab here on the farm. Unlike the usual such vehicle in this part of the country, it is not used for freeway commuting, or trips to happy hour or the local megachurch. I use it mostly to tote feed, seed, fertilizer and such around the acreage. The extra cab is handy for things that need to be locked or kept out of the weather, but it makes the vehicle unwieldy and puts many restrictions on where it can go. Its replacement will be a single cab. The new EV pickups might be ideal and they’ll be getting a close look.

I think that tfg wanted to use his Secret Service Detail (SS) to break the the perimeter of the Capitol Police. The Capitol Police (CP) would have a hard time trying to stop tfg and the SS, particularly in the middle of a riot. And the CP couldn’t and most likely wouldn’t use force to stop him from entering.

Such an action would likely collapse the CP and open up the Capitol building to tfg’s rioters led by Proud Boy and Oathkeeper militias. Many of whom were armed. These folks had every intention of hunting down and killing Democratic Congress folks and their staffs.

At that point, Pence was irrelevant. And, of course, he would likely be a casualty as well.

Supposedly/theoretically there are grey foxes in the DC area. Some folks I know in the Frederick County Maryland area say that grey foxes are their primary local foxes.

All I have ever seen in Fairfax/Loudoun County are red foxes. And when the coyotes move in to local areas, they chase the foxes out. The county animal control is waging a bit of a quiet war in favor of the native foxes and against the coyotes.

I think the trick to successfully using Twitter is to be extremely unforgiving with the block button, and don’t give in to the temptation to reply to assholes. In other news, somehow I managed to end up on the rapid response list for one of my applications and got a page. I logged in (yes, within 5 minutes because I was already sitting at my desk and just needed to switch boxes) and I believe the person who used the rapid response list to send pages did so in error, because it was not a major incident. The State Agency that I worked for gave us instructions to always back into the parking spot so we had a forward exit for pretty much the same reason. There were times when it was dangerous for a car from out agency to be seen in far northern MN (north of Hwy 2).

I’m actually hoping the local authorities use the common sense God gave geese and tell the Supreme Court Marshal they will not be arresting people for exercising their First Amendment rights to peaceably protest for redress of grievances. When we bought the house in ‘97, a 2/1 of 1100 sq ft plus a converted 2-car garage that was a 450 sq ft 1/1 with an attached laundry shed (which included a second certificate-of-occupancy- we were a duplex on a legal lot!) the land (7,500 sq ft) was worth $25,000, and the improvements were worth $130,000.

Now, the land is appraised at $725,000 and the Improvements are appraised at $419,619.

I am just rich as shit, at least if I sell. But this means my property tax is north of $15,000 this coming year because we have no income taxes in Texas and property owners are responsible for over half of school funding.

Texas is the most evil state in the union for making the poor pay the most taxes. It’s a fucking joke.

Except SUVs actually aren’t safe. That is effective advertising from auto manufacturers. A Smart is safer than an SUV, and easier to get into.

Our sewers were upgraded with a USDA grant, as was our water system, not with property taxes.

We really don’t have curbs, since we have unimproved (sand) and improved (gravel) streets. Property taxes do pay to grade our streets regularly.

Property taxes (with added equalization funds from the state income tax) pay to maintain the village park and to the village government, which funds the public library directly. They also fund the two school districts my town is divided between, but people in town are starting to press to re-open the one-room school (cheaper to run and right in town rather than twenty miles away).

The fight to keep abortion legal in Nebraska continues, as the Nebraska Medical Association intends to sell out women by negotiating with conservatives in the Unicameral to carve out a deal. Back in February when Governor Ricketts tried to ban abortion, the Nebraska Medical Association held firm against the state, contributing to that ban’s defeat.

For now, abortion remains legal in Nebraska (a haven for women from the fascist states which surround us).

The LAPD came to my protest at John MacArthur’s cult church in Sun Valley on June 19. They were very nice to me. Maybe it’s because I’m a fat middle aged white woman, or because I was wearing an expensive GoPro camera in a chest harness which showed I meant business. The woman who came up from Santa Monica to protest with me brought entirely too much stuff for a protest. I’m thinking about writing a zine about my experiences with protesting. One of the points will be DON’T BRING TOO DAMN MUCH. YOU MAY NEED TO MAKE A QUICK GETAWAY.

I grew up on the street by that church. I have stories upon stories about how bad they were. One of their deacons was pretty high up in the LAPD under Gates, and once tried to frame me for being a “ringleader” to a gang of “mini-terrorists” because I would ride my skateboard through the halls there and make fun of the staff. He threatened to have me arrested for burglary.

Glad you took the protection seriously. In the Field Artillery, a lot of 18 year olds felt they were invulnerable and didn’t.

You just got me thinking about a story Jim Wright aka Stonekettle told about one search and rescue mission he was on in the middle of the ocean.

Apparently a newbie deck crew sailor on an aircraft carrier stood where he was not supposed to and got blown off the deck into the ocean by jet exhaust. According to Wright, after a 10 hour search they actually found the guy. And he was still alive. And apparently quite angry that he had missed breakfast.

When French Departments were named they were often called after the major rivers running through them (e.g. I live in the Val de Marne).

This lead to some problems where one river flowed through many departments, so they ended up with names like Siene (now the department of Paris) and Seine-Inférieure (the department where the Siene runs into the sea).

Oddly, the inhabitants of the Seine-Inférieure didn’t like the name. (It is now the Siene-Maritime).

Lac Supérieur shouldn’t make such a big thing of its name, it just means “upstream lake”.

Patriot Front Propaganda Stunt Ends in Failure, Arrests (Southern Poverty Law Center’s Hatewatch, June 29, 2022)

A propaganda banner hung by members of white nationalist group Patriot Front burst into flames and fell into traffic lanes on Interstate 35 near Sanger, Texas, on May 21, 2021, according to an arrest report and 2022 leaks of Patriot Front chats, documents and media.

Sanger Police Department officers arrested Austin J. Amato, 23, then of Fort Worth, Texas, and Tristan M. Yeager, 22, then of Haslet, Texas, on deadly conduct charges in relation to the incident, according to an arrest report. The report alleges that officers saw the banner catch fire and fall onto the roadway. The Sanger Fire Department helped extinguish the blaze.

The failed banner drop is the latest in a string of incidents in which alleged Patriot Front activities have presented a danger to public safety. On June 11, police in Coeur D’Alene, Idaho, arrested 31 members of the group including leader and founder Thomas Rousseau when the group attempted to counterprotest a Pride event in the city.

Star Wars fans have only felt in recent years the stinging abuse that we Trek fans dealt with for decades. Between TOS and TNG, there had been no hard, fast rule on canon so a lot of fans filled in the gaps with novels and tech manuals, much of it drawing either from interpretations of on-screen info or from the writers themselves. Then work on TNG began and Gene came down from the mountain to declare that A) “canon” only applied to things seen on-screen or in licensed publications and B) everything fan produced up to that point was non-canon. And that remains the pretty hard and fast rule in Trek canon, that only things either on-screen or in Paramount/CBS licensed media counts.

Star Wars didn’t get the same treatment until the Mouse bought out Lucasfilms, assuming you don’t count the betrayal by Lucas that was the prequels that pretty much nuked any Extended Universe media concerning Anakin, Obi-Wan, and the Clone Wars.

Property taxes are usually collected at the local or county level in most (maybe all) states and are used to pay for most local schools, police, and fire departments even in states with an income taxes.

Here in AZ, I pay county and school property taxes (K-12 school, community college), and state income tax. I have no problem paying taxes for the public schools, but I’ll be *damned* if my money is going to pay for private, sectarian schools. I don’t care if it’s the First Baptist School or the First Wiccan Academy, I am an equal opportunity offender. My school tax money should go to pay for public schools. And I say this as someone with a disability who was poorly served by the public schools. (But who had an AWESOME experience at public college and university.) I just know that if the public schools wouldn’t diagnose high-functioning autism in a girl in 1967, there’s no way a private school would have done the same. And private schools can kick kids with disabilities out with impunity.

I also have a problem with policing in general and the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office in particular. I’m still not over how the MCAO tried to turn BLM protesters into a “gang.” But I’m not one of those assholes who deliberately chooses to live in a “county island” so they don’t have to pay school taxes. Fucking tax dodgers.

For non-Navy folks: NEC is Naval Enlisted Classification (what specialties you are trained to do), and Intermediate-Level Repair is avionics component-level repair in a shop.

It was as grotesque as you might imagine, filled with America’s Next Mass Shooters salivating over the idea of women finally being punished for enjoying sex with men who are not them. Then I went back to Twitter and noticed, over the next few days, that there wasn’t really that much of a difference between what the incels were saying on their anonymous messageboards amongst themselves and what regular old anti-abortion rights folks were saying right out in public. For they, too, were desperately glad to see women finally getting punished for enjoying sex as well.

There were endless tweets about how “whores” would now have to think twice about “spreading their legs” and how they had escaped “consequences” for too long — the “consequences,” of course, being pregnancy and a child they may not be able to afford. The tone, the absolute rage behind these tweets was no different from that seen on the incel boards. It wasn’t the rage of people who just care desperately about babies, it was the rage of those who feel they have been personally wronged by women having consensual sex without being punished for it.

This made me snort. They won’t accept certiorari on any challenges to the laws that prohibit protesting around their homes and place of employment.

I think the majority of the Supreme Court has put itself into a personal world of hurt—one they deserve to be in. They’ve pissed off a lot of people, and the idea that they can remain above the fray is a fiction. If they’re *smart*, they’ll figure out a way to undo what they did. It wouldn’t be the first time. Back in 1940, the Court said that Jehovah’s Witnesses children could be forced to salute the flag (Minersville School District v. Gobitis) and that led to rioting and violence against Jehovah’s Witnesses. The Court revisited the issue in 1943 under West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette, saying the state could not compel this type of speech. The majority opinion gave us this:

If there is any fixed star in our constitutional constellation, it is that no official, high or petty, can prescribe what shall be orthodox in politics, nationalism, religion, or other matters of opinion or force citizens to confess by word or act their faith therein.

I don’t think this Court is that smart. I think, instead, that we’re headed for a time of low level public unrest. And here we have the NYPD helping the anti-abortion fanatics in their quest to block a Planned Parenthood in New York. Eventually someone’s gonna get tired of this privileging and fists are going to fly.

Star Wars fans have only felt in recent years the stinging abuse that we Trek fans dealt with for decades. Between TOS and TNG, there had been no hard, fast rule on canon so a lot of fans filled in the gaps with novels and tech manuals, much of it drawing either from interpretations of on-screen info or from the writers themselves. Then work on TNG began and Gene came down from the mountain to declare that A) “canon” only applied to things seen on-screen or in licensed publications and B) everything fan produced up to that point was non-canon. And that remains the pretty hard and fast rule in Trek canon, that only things either on-screen or in Paramount/CBS licensed media counts.

Star Wars didn’t get the same treatment until the Mouse bought out Lucasfilms, assuming you don’t count the betrayal by Lucas that was the prequels that pretty much nuked any Extended Universe media concerning Anakin, Obi-Wan, and the Clone Wars.

The infamous Roddenberry/Richard Arnold canon memo declared that Star Trek canon was only what was established onscreen in live-action Trek counted, and that licenced tie-in works like novels, comics, etc. were not canon. Even licensed reference works like the Okuda chronologies and encyclopedias and the Sternbach/Okuda tech manuals aren’t canon by the Roddenberry/Arnold definition and can and have had their datapoints and conjectuures overwritten by the Star Trek series on which they worked.

I grew up in Arleta and remember that place very well. Many of the kids I went to church with, left (with their parents) our church for Grace Community. This “white flight” was the beginning of the end for our little protestant church. It was interesting to see this splintering with many people going further down the road to the even more fundamentalist “Church on the Way”. My one experience at Grace Comm was “bible study” where the speaker said the earth was only a few thousand years old. Odd, seeing so many people nodding along. I got up and left.
